The True Casualties of Amnesty
h/t Instapundit
[NationalReview] One of the sleeper issues surrounding the debate on amnesty for illegal immigrants -- an inconvenient one that no proponent of a widespread amnesty wishes to acknowledge -- is the devastating effect so-called immigration reform will have on African Americans.

The official black unemployment rate is almost 11 percent, far higher than that of any other group profiled by labor statistics. African Americans are disproportionately employed in lower-skilled jobs -- the very same jobs immigrants take. As Steven Camarota asked in a recent column, why double immigration when so many people already aren't working?

#6  Huge numbers of people in the US with DUAL CITIZENSHIP is the danger. Especially those who came here illegally. Their allegiance is with the home country before the host country. i.e. Ukraine vs Russia. That is the reason for need for a cap on immigration. So The Caliph is now a global superstar. Ever since Dr Ibrahim al-Badri of Samarra, a minor Sunni cleric who impersonates neo-medieval Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, showed up in the stone pulpit of a Mosul mosque at the start of Ramadan, he's been on a roll.

He fully advertised his piece of transnational real estate - from the suburbs of Aleppo to Mosul (and promised more takeovers). He cut his own video - essentially his own, a monotone rap, dressed in trademark Men in Black regalia. He eliminated the competition, essentially by killing them all. He exalted the mujahid, inviting them to follow jihad in the name of Allah. He condemned miscreants and hypocrites, exalting the "victory of Muslims" from "the West to the East".

Modestly sporting a US$7,000 watch (or Chinese replica) and asking for "corrections" in his behavior, The Caliph announced that his Islamic State (IS) business, former ISIS, is not only about the Levant. Want an IS passport? Just ask The Caliph.

He firmly set his sights on conquering Rome (Saracens sacked St Peter's in 846); "You will conquer Rome and will be masters of the world." It won't happen before Sunday though, so Pope Francis can watch Argentina against Germany in peace without fear of decapitation.

But first, The Caliph seems to be ready to ride his holy camel shouting "Allahu Akbar!" all the way to Baghdad and then Mecca. After all, he also proclaimed that the 1916 Sykes-Picot colonial racket, sorry, agreement between Britain and France is now null and void. No wonder the House of Saud, that pristine fountain of courage, has already massed 30,000 mercenaries, sorry, troops, on their border with Iraq (until six months ago the Saudis were facilitating an Air and Bus Jihad all the way to both Syria and Iraq; now they dread the boomerang effect.)

No more nice jihadis
Still, The Caliph is all over the place. His Salafi-jihadi Declaration of Independence - not only from historic al-Qaeda but mostly from those jaded/corrupt Arab monarchies and the Western intel apparatus which has nurtured International Jihad for decades - is indeed groundbreaking. Which explains the perplexity of the Empire of Chaos. That good ol' "strategy" of projecting imperial/NATO power by proxy - via jihadis for rent - now lies in shambles. The Caliph is the ultimate jihadi Frankenstein.

No wonder the Obama lame-duck dinner, sorry, administration, is contemplating, at least in Syria, the usual plan A, which is to weaponize both sides (let Arabs kill Arabs). In Iraq, the plan still being discussed in the Beltway might be to drone IS convoys. It won't be a walk in the park because the IS military leadership is composed of battlefield-experienced former Iraqi guerrillas. And they are not foolish to start parading those gleaming white Toyotas in open desert all over again now they have become instant celebrities.

In parallel, the really juicy story to be followed is that IS can develop as the ideal, proxy weapon of choice for the Empire of Chaos - and the House of Saud - to fight what could be described as the Iran-Hezbollah-Syria-Iraq alliance. Exactly the opposite peddled by this prodigy of wishful thinking.

Realistically, in geopolitical terms, The Caliph's hypothetical journey to Rome is also a joke. IS is surrounded by hostile powers, from Iran and Turkey to Egypt. If the Men in Black decided to cross 300 kilometers of desert to attack King Playstation's realm, also known as Jordan, they would be all droned to death.

So now that he's announced himself as the new Osama, The Caliph had better watch his back. Most probably he's a one-trick camel. He might realize he's got a better shot at stardom by branding himself as the second coming of Michael Jackson and start doing the Moonwalk (the jihadi remix).

The Caliph, apart from his mighty watch, may now hold a lot of weapons and make money by selling oil, but his Caliphate is a mirage. Only one thing is certain. Before it vanishes into the sands of time, there will be blood. A lot of blood.

Intense battle erupts in Qansaxdhere
Qansaxdhere -- According to news reports from Bay region, fierce clashes broke out between Somali National Army troops against the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab terrorist organization in the Qansaxdhere district of the region.

The violent conflict was provoked after the terrorist insurgents attacked a Somali National Army sitting or military station in Qansaxdhere. Residents in the district have reported to Shabelle that severe fatalities were caused and both of the warring sides allegedly received casualties and losses.

The Qansaxdhere district officials of the Bay regional administration have denied to give a statement to Shabelle regarding the skirmishes in the district last night.

The 'victories' of Hamas, according to Gaza TV
[JPOST] "Seven Israelis die in Zikim," "Ten injured in Haifa after rocket explodes," "All of Tel-Aviv is in shelters," and "Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, succeeds in causing malfunctions to the Iron Dome system," - these are just some of the headlines that Gazoo residents have been hearing in recent days on Hamas radio and television broadcasts.

But none of the news items mentioned above actually happened. Seven Israelis did not die in Zikim, instead it was five Hamas murderous Moslems that died. No one was injured in Haifa, and Tel Avivians are still going to work, enjoying the beach and sitting at cafes, not locked in shelters.

Afghanistan
Disputed Afghan election to be recounted in full, sez Kerry
The two rival candidates in Afghanistan’s presidential election agreed to abide by the results of a UN-supervised recount of the entire poll to settle their dispute over the outcome, US Secretary of State John Kerry said after talks with both men.
And who would know more about counting ballots than a Massachusetts Democrat?
The recount was scheduled to begin within 24 hours, but was likely to take several weeks, meaning that a presidential inauguration due on August 2 will be postponed.

The deadlock over the June 14 election run-off between the leading contenders, Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani, has raised concerns about a smooth transition of power in Afghanistan just as US-led troops are leaving.

“Both candidates have committed to participate in and abide by the results of the largest and most comprehensive audit. Every single ballot that was cast will be audited,” Kerry told a joint news conference with both candidates, held just before midnight after talks dragged for two days. “This is the strongest possible signal by both candidates of the desire to restore legitimacy to the process.”

The stakes are high for the United States. Washington hopes to settle the dispute quickly so it can sign a crucial security pact with Afghanistan allowing a small contingent of US troops to stay in the country beyond this year. Unlike incumbent Hamid Karzai, both Abdullah and Ghani have promised to sign the deal promptly, but the protracted standoff over the vote has delayed the process.

Ghani and Abdullah have been locked in an acrimonious dispute since the June 14 run-off, both effectively claiming victory and Abdullah refusing to accept the outcome. They have not met each other in person since the vote but Kerry managed to bring both men together at a UN compound in central Kabul to give an unprecedented joint news conference.

“This audit will be conducted in accordance with the highest international standards,” said Kerry, flanked by both candidates in a packed news conference. As he announced the total recount of the votes, many in the audience gasped. “The auditing will be internationally supervised in a manner proposed by the UN assistance mission, the candidates’ campaigns will each provide joint oversight of the audit.”

In a show of unity after months of bitter bickering, Ghani kissed Abdullah on the cheek after addressing reporters.

“Since we have agreed to a 100 per cent audit of ballots I request from President Karzai to postpone inauguration of new government,” Abdullah said.

Preliminary results from the run-off vote put Ghani, a former World Bank official, in the lead by almost one million votes. Abdullah rejected the result, claiming widespread fraud and calling the outcome a “coup” against the Afghan people.

In comments to reporters on Friday, Kerry said the transition to a self-reliant state hung in the balance unless the legitimacy of the election could be restored.

UN calls for Israel-Gaza ceasefire
[Dhaka Tribune] The UN Security Council has called for a ceasefire between Israel and the Paleostinians in the Gazoo Strip, as Paleostinian deaths continue to mount.

All 15 members approved a statement calling for de-escalation, the "restoration of calm" and a resumption of peace talks.

At least 133 Paleostinians have been killed since Israel began its operation five days ago, Paleostinian sources say.

Israel says it has been hit by over 40 rockets since Friday, suffering damage.

It is the first time since Israel's offensive began that the UN Security Council has issued a statement, with members previously divided on their response.

The Security Council members expressed serious concern regarding the crisis related to Gazoo and the protection and welfare of civilians on both sides.

The Security Council members called for de-escalation of the situation, restoration of calm, and reinstitution of the November 2012 ceasefire.

The Security Council members further called for respect for international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.

The Security Council members also expressed their support for the resumption of direct negotiations between the Israelis and Paleostinians with the aim of achieving a comprehensive peace agreement based on the two-state solution.

Israel has vowed to press on with its campaign until rocket attacks stop.

It says it is targeting snuffies and Death Eater facilities, including the homes of senior operatives. "Dozens of terrorists" are among those killed, it says.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
the UN estimated has estimated hat 77% of the people killed in Gazoo were civilians.

Nisar orders keeping Islamabad, Rawalpindi security on high alert
[DAWN] Federal Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
on Saturday directed the district and police administration of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to keep the security of the twin cities on high alert, saying the situation had become sensitive since the military operation went under way in North Wazoo.

The minister gave these directives while chairing a meeting of officials from the twin cities' district and police administration here at the interior Ministry.

Today's meeting comes days after Nisar went back to work as his ties with the PML-N leadership normalised following a meeting between the interior minister and the prime minister himself.

12 decomposing bodies found on Tajoura beach
[Libya Herald] Twelve unidentified decomposing bodies were found on the beach in Tajoura on Thursday and Friday. The find may be connected to the discovery of an abandoned fishing boat on Thursday.

According to the mayor of Tajoura, Hussein Al-Zarouq, the corpses were transferred to Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Medical Centre.

Zarouq told LANA that he believed that the bodies were most likely those of illegal migrants en route to Europe. There is concern, he said, that a boat found two days ago, on which the suspected refugees may have been travelling, was contaminated with some contagious diseases. He did not explain but said there had been local pressure for precautions to be put in place to stop the spread of any contagion.
Possibly they don't want to be on the receiving end of that little Ebola problem...
He called on the Ministry of Health and the Libyan Red Islamic Thingy to "take necessary measures".

He also pointed to his municipality's lack of adequate resources—such as body bags, morgues and vehicles to transport the bodies.

The Red Islamic Thingy responded by sending a team of volunteers to the beach to properly search the boat and transport the bodies from the beach to the hospital.

MILF sub-leader, soldier killed in Mindanao clash
A sub-leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and a Philippine soldier were killed in a firefight that also injured four others in Lanao del Sur province.

Capt. Franco Suelto said the soldiers were waiting for television crew members when MILF sub-leader Javier Macagaan and his followers attacked the infantrymen starting a firefight. He said the clash killed Macagaan and a government soldier. Suelto said the soldiers were acting as the security detail for the television crew members who were filming in Marantao town.

Sources said that Macagaan and his followers were alarmed after seeing many soldiers near his house and thought he would be arrested.

Col. Glenn Macasero said the MILF members attacked the soldiers without provocation. He said, "The soldiers had no recourse but to return fire and defend their position until reinforcement arrived. Firefight ensued for an hour until elements of the MILF withdraw to different direction."

He said the incident was resolved through the intercession of the International Monitoring Team and the Joint Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran Protesters Demand Respect for the Veil, Chastity
[An Nahar] Several hundred people demonstrated in Iran's capital on Saturday to demand that state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
boost "the culture of the veil and chastity" in its programming.

Protesters denounced the presence of "badly veiled" women in soap operas and said women wearing the traditional full-body chador were often depicted as poor and uncultivated.

Under Islamic law in force in Iran since the 1979 revolution, women must wear loose clothing and a hijab, a veil covering the hair and neck.

A police "morality" unit is responsible for enforcing the law, and can impose fines or even arrest those who defy it.

But recent years have seen many women wear a thin veil that hardly covers the hair, tight clothing or coats reaching mid-thigh instead of the long coat or chador.

Harry Reid Slammed By Hometown Paper For 'Race-Baiting'
[DAILYCALLER] The largest newspaper in Nevada
The one that's not allowed here on Rantburg...
is taking the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
... the charismatic senator-for-life from Nevada, currently majority leader ...
to task, saying that the Democrat's recent comments about Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas highlight a pattern of race card rhetoric.

"Harry Reid is the da Vinci of distraction," reads the editorial from the Las Vegas newspaper, which was posted online Friday.
They're talking about the Righthaven newspaper...
"The moment any scandal, policy failure or political defeat crashes down on him — and there have been plenty the past few years — the Senate majority leader unleashes outrageous rhetoric," the editorial continues, adding that Reid "has become especially fond of slinging race cards just to crank up the outrage."

Killings and kidnappings continue in Benghazi
[Libya Herald] Two officers were killed in Benghazi over the last two days with another nine individuals kidnapped in the city in 24 hours on Thursday.

Tawfiq Sheikhi, an army colonel, was shot and killed in the early hours of yesterday morning in the city's Hadaiq area. Residents in the district told the Libya Herald that he had been shot by assailants driving a back BMW. His body was taken to Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC).

BMC has also reported the death of airforce colonel Ibrahim Dressi who was shot and killed in Benghazi's Salmani district after leaving Maghreb prayers on Thursday. A source the hospital said Dressi had been shot several times and was dead on arrival. The identity of his killers is unknown.

As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
Investigations Unit Fadel Al-Hassi said that a total of nine people had been kidnapped in Benghazi on Thursday. He said the abductees included military and security services personnel, men and women. Other than the son of Major General Suleiman Obeidi, Mahmoud Obeidi, he would not disclose their names as a security precaution.

A week ago, Hassi said 56 individuals including military personnel were being held following kidnappings in Benghazi. Forty-three were reported by Saiqa Special Forces two weeks ago.

Shiite Rebels Say Ready to Evacuate Key Yemeni City
[An Nahar] Yemeni Iranian catspaws agreed Saturday to withdraw from Amran, seized in a push towards the capital, in a deal struck with authorities who are dispatching troops to the strategic city.
It all seems rather pointless now...
The Houthis seized the northern city Tuesday, in a new challenge to the government, which is also facing an al-Qaeda threat and a separatist movement in the south.

The capture of Amran, just 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Sanaa, threatened a federalization plan that was agreed in February following national talks as part of a political transition.

The rebels, also known as Ansarullah, have complained for years of marginalization in the Sunni majority country, and say the transition plan would divide Yemen into rich and poor regions.

In February they advanced from their mountain strongholds in the remote north towards the capital, battling loyalist troops and pro-government rustics.

Rebel front man Mohammed Abdessalam told Agence La Belle France Presse Saturday that the Huthis had struck a deal with the defense ministry to withdraw from Amran and that troops would move in later in the day.

"Our men will withdraw from Amran as soon as an army unit moves in," Abdessalam said, adding that a regiment was on its way from the northern city of Saada.

"Other military units... will follow suit," he said.

Amran fell after four days of fierce fighting that unconfirmed reports said have killed as many as as 400 people. The Red Islamic Thingy said the violence uprooted at least 10,000 families.

Rockets hit Benina Airport's newly refurbished international terminal
[Libya Herald] Four rockets which struck Benina Airport yesterday have destroyed its newly refurbished international departures lounge.

The missile strike did not cause any injuries and, as yet, no group has grabbed credit for the attack. The shells caused some structural damage and destroyed a new restaurant and waiting area. These facilities had only recently been completed. There have also been reports of damage to the airport's car park and several cars.

Djotodia fled power in January under strong international pressure for his failure to rein in rogue ex-rebels, who relentlessly murdered, raped and looted civilians.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Bank-Stealing Malware Returns after U.S. Crackdown
[An Nahar] Malicious software used to steal millions from bank accounts has re-emerged a month after U.S. authorities broke up a major hacker network using the scheme, security researchers say.

The security firm Malcovery said it identified a new trojan based on the Gameover Zeus malware, which officials said infected up to one million computers in 12 countries, and was blamed in the theft of more than $100 million.

"This discovery indicates that the criminals responsible for Gameover's distribution do not intend to give up on this botnet even after suffering one of the most expansive botnet takeovers/takedowns in history," Malcovery said in a blog post Thursday.

By infecting large numbers of computers, the cyber criminals were able to control the devices to steal passwords and send out emails to further spread the infection.

The news came as the Department of Justice said it had made progress in rooting out the malware infections.

In a status report filed in court, officials said that "all or nearly all of the active computers infected with Gameover Zeus have been liberated from the criminals' control and are now communicating exclusively with the substitute server established pursuant to court order."

A blog post by the security firm Emsisoft said the new variant may be harder to combat, because it is using "an evasive technique that allows the botnet to hide its distributive phishing sites behind a constantly shuffling list of infected, proxy computers."

Gameover Zeus, which first appeared in September 2011, stole bank information and other confidential details from victims.

The FBI blamed the Gameover Zeus botnet for the theft of more than $100 million, obtained by using the stolen bank data and then "emptying the victims' bank accounts and diverting the money to themselves."

The June crackdown also targeted another computer virus, dubbed "Cryptolocker," which appeared in September 2013.

Russian Evgeniy Mikhailovich Bogachev, 30, an alleged administrator of the network, was charged in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with 14 counts including conspiracy, computer hacking, bank fraud and money laundering in the Gameover Zeus and Cryptoblocker schemes.

Hamas: Airlines should avoid Israel's airport
Hamas warned airlines to stay away from Israel's Ben Gurion Airport, threatening to target it with rockets. Friday's warning by Hamas' armed wing, reported by Reuters, came on the fourth day of Israel's operation against Hamas in Gaza.

"The armed wing of Hamas movement has decided to respond to the Israeli aggression and we warn you against carrying out flights to Ben Gurion airport, which will be one of our targets today because it also hosts a military air base," Reuters quoted a statement by Hamas' Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades as saying.

Hamas claimed earlier that it already had fired at least one rocket toward the airport, although no such hit was reported. The terrorist group said it had issued the warning so that airlines could avoid injury to passengers.
So thoughtful they are.
Several rockets from the Gaza Strip were fired toward the greater Tel Aviv area on Friday morning. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted three projectiles. No injuries were reported. Incoming air traffic was halted as sirens were sounded in the area, an airport spokesperson told The Jerusalem Post. Flight traffic was resumed as normal after the sirens subsided.
And so effective, too.
A spokesman for the Airports Authority said that a siren had sounded at Ben Gurion and that all activity had stopped for about 10 minutes, but that the siren was part of a general alert in the Tel Aviv area and not a direct threat to the airport.

Egypt Police Arrest Man for Raping Russian Tourist
[An Nahar] Egyptian police said Saturday they have enjugged

a driver for raping a Russian tourist in a resort town, as the government cracks down on an epidemic of sexual harassment and violence.

Police said the mini-bus driver raped the woman after pretending the vehicle had broken down, to trick her husband into getting off before speeding off with his intended victim.

The incident took place in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh, where the tourism ministry had previously shut down two hotels over alleged rapes.

In Cairo, police said Saturday they have arrested a low-ranking officer who groped a Tunisian woman at Cairo airport.

The government recently passed a law imposing harsher penalties for sexual crimes.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi pledged to crack down on such crimes, after footage circulated of men sexually assaulting a woman during a rally.

Thirteen men have been put on trial over that attack and others during rallies in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea made it to the World Cup final! Wait, what?
[TORONTOSUN] Despite not qualifying for 2014 World Cup, North Korea has reached the final, according to state media.

Make sense?

While the rest of the world is sitting tight in anticipation of Sunday's Germany-Argentina tilt here in Rio, North Koreans have reportedly been told their country's soccer team has been dominant at this summer's event.

A video posted to YouTube channel Korea News Backup, which features reports from North Korea's state-run media, appears to show a newscaster reporting on North Korea's fictitious success at the World Cup.

The sequence shows "highlights" of North Korea's 7-0 win over Japan, 4-0 win over the United States and 2-0 win over China, all of which didn't take place, of course.

The rhetoric also contains video of North Korea's Supreme Leader, Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, being superimposed over the big screen at a FIFA Fanfest while receiving rounds of applause from World Cup fans.

North Korea last competed at a World Cup in 2010, losing all three games to Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal.

During that tournament, North Korean media reported their country's national team defeated Brazil 1-0 even though Brazil won the match 2-1.
They might well have beaten Brazil this week...
There are only a few holes in North Korean media's attempt to falsify results, the main one being the fact Asian teams can't play each other in the group stage.

North Korea failed to make it to the final round of Asian qualifying ahead of this summer's World Cup, losing twice to Uzbekistan and drawing lowly Tajikistan.

North Korea is currently ranked 146th in the world, 36 spots behind Canada.

"We are seeing the disintegration of the state of Iraq into three nations; the Shi'ites in the south and east, the Kurds in the north and a Sunni Caliphate under the control of ISIL from western Iraq to Syria," RAND Corporation political scientist and former U.S. military adviser Rick Brennan said.

He warns that the Shi'ite-led government would be acquiescent to Iran and argues that any amount of U.S. involvement now is not likely to make much of a difference.

#2  Iraq as a country never made sense. Much as Yugoslavia (remember Yugoslavia?) fell apart after Tito died because of the cobbling together of several mutually hostile ethnic and religious groups, Iraq will do the same.

Drawing lines on a map does not create a country. The only thing that held Iraq in one piece was fear of a monster and his minions and their ruthless imposition of power.

The entire ME needs to be redrawn rationally. Unfortunately, the redrawing will be in blood not ink. The horror is just beginning.

#5  In this modern era there is less and less need in the first world for super-states to provide security, distribute wealth and ensure trade. The various parts of Europe that wish to secede from their nation-states might as well do so -- Scotland, Catalonia, northern Italy, and so on. What's the difference in the end? Each will set up a government that will be conniving as the ones they're replacing. Life will go on little different than before.

However, the less developed world, such as Iraq, will have a problem with this -- there security IS a major concern, and the United States is again demonstrating that it is not to be trusted long term (ask the Vietnamese). Independent Kurdistan, Shi'a-land, and Sunni-ville will be unstable and easily victimized: the Kurds by the Turks, the Shi'a by Iran, and the Sunnis by the Saudis. Likewise India, if it were to fall apart into its constituent states, would quickly descend into strife. Balochistan as an independent state would become a tribal pesthole within weeks. Vladimir Putin is trying very hard to present the Russian Federation as an unalienable nation-state knowing that anything else would render its parts into serfdom and anarchy.

In this light, the one major anomaly is the United States, in which there is little (as yet) separatist movement. We josh about the rise of the new South or an independent Vermont but we all see each other as Americans. That's part of our exceptionalism. You wonder why Obama and the hard Left attack that: they wouldn't mind at all seeing America fall apart. It would be to their advantage.

#6  Mr. Bill, I hope you're correct for a number of philosophical reasons. But, I'm not so sure. I think that what we may witness is the success of soft socialism/fascism.

The power comes not from the governed but from the bribed. Use the police and laws to allow the picking off of individuals one at a time and the mass will go along to get along and as long as the bread and circuses continue the masses will never arise.

The wealthier class will have been bought lock stock & barrel. Any rabble from above, the few un-bought, will be crushed by the weight of regulations and the "war" against the rich (see Koch brothers for template).

Obama is trying all these same things but didn't properly lay the foundation.

Israeli bombing turns Gaza into ghost town
[NEWS.YAHOO] In Gazoo City, one of the world's most densely populated cities. A ceaseless Israeli bombing campaign, with Arclight airstrikes every five minutes, has turned the frenetic hub of the Gazoo Strip into a virtual ghost town, emptying streets, closing shops and keeping hundreds of thousands of people close to home where they feel safest from the bombs.

In Israel, hundreds of rockets fired by Gazoo Death Eaters also send civilians running into bomb shelters and staying close to home. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
there have been no fatalities there, while the corpse count in Gazoo topped 120 on Saturday from the five-day offensive.

In Gazoo, residents remain torn between fear for their safety and sadness over the loss of a normal Ramadan, usually a time of deep spirituality leavened by great joy and celebration.
I dunno about you, but my tears have certainly been jerked.
"The situation is very bad and not usual at all," housewife Umm Al-Abed said. "People in the month of Ramadan used to visit each other and go to buy things that are only sold during Ramadan. But now because of the atmosphere of war, people are afraid to go out and there are no salaries for anyone."

#5  One thing that has never been clear to me is whether you get extra points for murdering infidels, Crusaders, and Jews during Ramadan, or whether you are expected to behave for a month. Opinions seem divided.

As for "there have been no fatalities there, while the corpse count in Gazoo topped 120 ", it seems unfair to ding the Israelis for being better at not dying than their enemies are at killing them. Not really a surprising outcome, given that one side is a modern, industrialized nation and the other is a savage, tribal people, lacking an industrial base, who depend on their neighbors for both sustenance and munitions.

Robert Mugabe's racial decree on whites and land brings backlash
[CSMONITOR] The Zim-bob-we Independent today castigated the president's speech, in which Mugabe's "voice was dark and foreboding when he said 'we will have no mercy for white people regarding the land, they cannot own our soil.'"

The Independent, the leading financial paper from Harare, quoted analyst Dumisani Nkomo saying that Mugabe "was addressing party supporters and therefore should not be taken seriously."

Yet the presidents statements are "against the letter and spirit of the new constitution and as such should not be tolerated in any democratic society," Mr. Nkomo said, adding that the remarks were "not helpful for a country such as Zim-bob-we which has been struggling for many years to re-invent itself as an investor-friendly destination."

Prior to Mugabe's violent land reform policy in 2000, the nation was a fruitful breadbasket to Africa, but now has to import food aid for 10 percent of its population, according to Harvard expert and Monitor blogger Robert Rotberg.

Afghanistan
Afghan MPs Passe Law Giving New Privileges to Afghan MPs
[Tolo News] The Lower House of Parliament on Saturday passed a law based on which Members of Parliament will receive additional income from the government after their term is over.

Part of the law states that, even if an MP is not elected in the future, the government will be obligated to pay 25 percent of his/her last salary, and provide the MP with a privileged political passport and two armed guards.

"The Ministry of Interior must assign two bodyguards to members of Parliament who have completed a term, in addition, these members who do not make it to another term, must be given 25 percent of their last salary," said Hassan Sahrayee, an MP and member of the Immunity and Incentive Commission at the House of Representatives.

A number of MPs criticized the bill as being self-serving and neglectful of the needs of the country.
Of course. They sure learned fast, the clever buggers.
"When people are hungry, calling for incentives is a betrayal, they are asking for it for their personal interest, which is against the constitution," Kabul MP Ramazan Bashardost said.

"If Parliament wants to do something, they should work on the salaries of teachers, government employees, officers," another Kabul MP named Baktash Seyawash said. "This action will make people distrust Parliament."

Iraq army repels ISIL attack on Haditha
Iraqi military soldiers backed by thousands of tribal fighters have repelled a fresh assault by ISIL terrorists on the strategic town of Haditha, Press TV reported.

The attack on Haditha in Anbar Province began after the ISIL fired several rockets at military outposts in the troubled region on Saturday. Reports say the government forces killed more than three dozen ISIL terrorists in the fierce fighting in the western town.

A senior Iraqi army commander says 4,000 volunteers are being airlifted to Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar Province. Security sources say volunteer forces are being sent to Ramadi to help government forces there gain the upper hand in battles against the ISIL militants.

This comes as parts of Ramadi are under the control of the ISIL also known as Daesh. The Takfiri group is also controlling the city of Fallujah in Anbar Province.

Latest reports say violent clashes have erupted in the central province of Diyala as security forces fought back against militants across the volatile region. Reports say the ISIL's advance has been slowed down as Iraqi military and volunteer forces have begun engaging militants on several fronts.

The majority of the volunteer forces are Shia Muslims and Sunni tribesmen answering a call from top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. Senior Muslim clerics have condemned the ISIL atrocities, including mass executions and rape. The terrorist group has links with Saudi intelligence and it is believed that it is being indirectly supported by the Israeli regime.

IJA troops targeted in Kismayo IED blast
An explosion which caused injuries and losses occurred last night in Kismayo, the provincial capital of Lower Jubba region and the seat of the Interim Jubba Administration. The IED bomb was detonated by a remote control in Kismayo targeting troops loyal to the Interim Jubba Administration which manage the port town.

Residents in the city reported to Shabelle that they suspected casualties were sustained by the blast targeted at the soldiers despite specifying the precise numbers of fatalities. Almost immediately after the tremor, a fleet of IJA soldiers arrived on scene and conducted a thorough search crackdown of the entire port town of Kismayo.

At last, officials of the Interim Jubba Administration have not spoken out regarding the IED explosion in Kismayo nor specified the numbers of fatalities caused by the blast.

Israeli Rocket Defense System Is Failing at Crucial Task, Expert Analysts Say
Although it appears to hit incoming Hamas rockets, Israel's system could be falling short of detonating the rockets' warheads.
Wotta piece of junk!
Even though Israel's U.S.-funded "Iron Dome" rocket-defense interceptors appear to be hitting Hamas rockets in recent days, they are almost certainly failing in the crucial job of detonating those rockets' shrapnel-packed explosive warheads, expert analysts say.
They should just ditch the whole thing.
As a result, rockets fired from Gaza are probably plunging to the ground with intact explosives. The fact that they aren't causing injuries or deaths in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other cities is mainly a matter of luck, the analysts add.
Yeah. They were better off with what they had before.
On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said missiles from the system had intercepted 56 rockets fired out of Gaza, preventing strikes in several cities. Yet Richard Lloyd, a weapons expert and consultant who is a past Engineering Fellow at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, says that because these interceptions had almost certainly not detonated the rockets' warheads, the system is essentially failing.
Money pissed away that could have gone to public works projects and that sort of thing.
The Iron Dome system--meant to hit rockets traveling tens of miles from launch to landing--is a smaller cousin to the Patriot system, which attempts to hit much longer-range, faster incoming missiles. Iron Dome fires interceptors six inches wide and 10 feet long and uses sensors and real-time guidance systems to try to zero in on the rockets.

When an Iron Dome interceptor gets close to an incoming rocket, a proximity fuse triggers the interceptor to detonate, spraying out metal rods that are intended to strike and detonate the warheads on the incoming rockets, neutralizing their ability to maim people and destroy things on the ground.

Ted Postol, the MIT physicist and missile-defense expert who aided Lloyd's analysis and who in 1991 debunked claims by the U.S. Army that its Patriot missiles were successfully shooting down Iraqi Scud missiles during the first Gulf War (see "Postol vs. the Pentagon" and "Preventing Fratricide"), agrees that Iron Dome's interceptors have not been succeeding at this crucial warhead-detonation job.
Anybody remember what 'e pur se muove' means?
Postol had been an admirer of Iron Dome after initial reports of its performance during previous rocket assaults in 2012 (see "Why Israel's Iron Dome Missile Defense System Actually Works"). But later analyses of interceptor contrails showed that its guidance system was behaving erratically. Instead of smoothly rising to meet their targets, the interceptors were making sharp turns and engaging from the side or behind, he says.

Those problems appear to be continuing, he says. "We expected that after more than a year and a half of time, whatever problems there were in the system related to guidance and control would be mitigated, or somewhat mitigated," he says. "As it turns out, this is not the case. As far as we can tell, it is behaving in the same erratic way as it did in November 2012."

The Iron Dome interceptors need to hit an incoming rocket head-on to have much hope of detonating a warhead, Lloyd says. And initial visual analysis of the engagements in recent days shows that the interceptions that are occurring are from the side or behind, which provide "essentially a zero chance of destroying the warhead," based on the basic physics of such engagements, he adds.

Efforts to reach the Israel Defense Forces for comment were unsuccessful.

#2  This has always been typical of missile interceptors. A SCUD warhead that was from a missile that was hit by a Patriot slammed into a barracks in the first Gulf War.

The primary goal of the interceptor is to knock the missile off target. Where the Patriot failed at times, was that the interception took place late in the flight path. Iron dome intercepts farther away so hopefully the warhead, after being knocked off target, falls into an unpopulated or lightly populated area.

#4  In the first Gulf War the Patriot intercepts rates were worse in Israel then in Saudi. The reason for that was a more random mix of delay times in the Israeli phone system. In Saudi microwave links were used instead of phone ones. I hope Iron Dome makes no use of said phone network.

#8  In the first Gulf War, the Patriot was in the initial stages of development for theater anti-missile defense. It wasn't designed for that. It was designed for anti-aircraft defense as a replacement for the much older Nike Hercules AA system. As an AA system, all you had to do was get in the proximity of the target and explode a warhead creating shrapnel that would degrade engines and fuselages, making it an unstable air platform or reducing its ability to reach its target. Studies* in the 80s suggested its employment in the other capacity and modification development didn't start till the end of the decade for want of priority funding. As an anti-missile system, you need a kinetic round, hit a bullet with a bullet, or at least near on to direct contact to divert.

When the initial batched were deployed in the Gulf, there was no direct linkage between intel that reported a launch and the units in the field. The detect time even with the local phase array radar only allowed about a second to determine to launch. There was no chance to shoot, then look to see if you hit before you would launch again (shoot-look-shoot). Too quick. Instead, they ripple fired two at a time (shoot-shoot-look) in the hopes that they could direct the second one to vector intercept if the first missed. Statistically, at that rate, the best you can do is 50%. Hip shooting with an initially fielded system. Good luck.

The barracks that got hit was because the Patriot battery was down for an upgrade in its software as begin among the first fielded, they were still working on the system and literally sending software patches as quickly as they could get them out.

* Those studies were funded by an authorization put into the budget by a Senator from Indiana, Dan Quayle. He'd picked up a study paid for by the (then) West German government to study theater missile defense potential of the long in development Patriot system. That Dan Quayle the MSM enjoyed maligning at every turn for things the one gets away with daily.

#9  The Iron Dome system is pretty good. It ignores things that are going to miss, and things that are going to hit something get a hard whack, way up in the air to send it off course.

The key success is that the Israelis do not feel helpless, instead they are confident that they can respond and triumph. War is politics by other means, and this system is great politics.

#11  What a fundamentally stupid error in his logic. You do not need to detonate the warhead, just render it inoperative. That means taking out the rising mechanism, or damaging the structural integrity of the explosives within it, or similar damage that refers the warhead ineffective. The shock and high speed shrapnel can do that without "detonating" the warheads.

What a piece of crap article.

BUT, of course, we can trust them to tell us whether Iron Dome is working or not, even though a working Iron Dome would invalidate their last forty years of belief systems.

#15  Depends on the nature of the explosive. Some require high energy, some not as much. For instance, you can burn C4 or hit it with a hammer, it will not explode. You need a blasting cap or det cord for that stuff. And if it were shock sensitive, most stuff would not survive artillery shell launch forces. Shrapnel through the casing is likely enough to cause the warhead to malfunction, possibly without detonating it.

Gunmen Kill 25 Women in Baghdad Compound Raid
[An Nahar] Gunmen killed 25 women and maimed at least eight people Saturday when they stormed two buildings in a residential Baghdad compound reputedly used for prostitution, police and government sources said.
It's Ramadan, so the taqfiris make sure nobody has any fun.
Police said silenced guns were used in the attack, which took place in a mainly Shiite area where 12 people were killed in a similar raid on May 22 last year.

"Twenty-five women were killed and eight people maimed, among them four men, when gunnies stormed two buildings in a residential compound in Zayouna in east Baghdad," an interior ministry official told Agence La Belle France Presse.

A senior police officer gave the same corpse count but reported 11 maimed.

"Unidentified gunnies stormed building number 43 in Zayouna, killing 10 women and wounding five. They also stormed building number 44, where they killed 15 women and maimed six men," a police colonel said, speaking on condition of anonymity

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Three Rockets Launched towards Israel, Israeli Flares Fired near Aita al-Shaab
[An Nahar] Unidentified men launched three rockets late on Saturday towards Israel from al-Qlayleh plain to the south of Tyre in southern Leb, reported the state-run National News Agency.
Trying to achieve Iran's long-planned encirclement, when Hamas and Hizb'allah attack along the border, while Iran lobs nukes from afar? Only without Iranian nukes or Hizb'allah or a true encirclement. But points for trying...
Earlier in the day and for the second day in a row, Israeli forces fired flares near Lebanese southern towns.

"Israeli forces fired flares near the (southern town of) Aita al-Shaab," NNA said.

The NNA also said that two Israeli helicopters flew over the border region inside the occupied Paleostinian territories.

Israeli forces had released heat balloons and fired flares on border towns late on Friday evening, particularly over the southern towns Marwahine, Aita al-Shaab and Ramya.

Israeli soldiers also deployed heavily along the border with Leb on Friday, covering the region from the village of Naqoura to Rmeish in the South.

On Friday morning, several rockets were fired on northern Israel from the outskirts of the town of Mari in Hasbaya, drawing retaliatory Israeli artillery fire.

But the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau managed later to arrest a suspect linked to the attack.

Terrorists from Kunar ambush post in Bajaur, 3 soldiers killed
[Pak Daily Times] Three army soldiers, including a captain, were killed in raid on a Pak check-post in the Bajaur tribal district from across the border, military said on Saturday.

The attack took place in Mamoond tehsil of Bajaur. Around two dozen turbans armed with sophisticated weapons crossed from the Afghan province of Kunar to launch the pre-dawn ambush, officials said.

"Militants from across the border ambushed a check post. Two security personnel and an officer embraced martyrdom in the attack," a security official in Bajaur told AFP by telephone.

Fatah Facebook Page Glorifies Female Fighters, Suicide Bombers
Women's liberation, Palestinian style.
Praising a fem splodydope is about the only time the jihadis find favor in wimmins...
[IsraelTimes] A short video clip posted on the Fatah movement's official Facebook page Thursday glorified a female army unit training to launch rockets at Israel and presented jacket wallahs as role models for the Paleostinian population.
Prob'ly a good thing Israel already cleaned out Hamas in the West Bank -- soon it will be time to go after Fatah. (I find it fascinating that they aren't hiding behind the Palestinian Authority label any longer.)
Fatah is the PLO faction headed by Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
Fatah prides itself on its "young women," who "part from their children, leave their homes and go to the battlefield carrying burial shrouds to fight in the ranks of the Paleostinian resistance in the Gazoo Strip," a narrator can be heard saying, according to a translation provided by NGO Paleostinian Media Watch, as a group of Paleostinian women are seen training, assembling and setting up rockets, shooting and engaging in physical training.
So when they say the corpse count includes X number of wimmin and kiddies, these are the wimmin?
"Another aspect of the Paleostinian woman's role in all areas is being created here," the narrator continues.

"She is not merely the man's partner in domestic life, but his lover companion wherever he is; on the battlefield, she is at his side on the frontline, and fulfills an active role in training generations of resistance [fighters], who will confront the 'invincible' army."

The narrator proceeds to explain that the female fighters have "willpower stronger than mountains," and that they "strive to become an important part of the path of Jihad and the struggle --the path walked by Dalal Mughrabi, Hanadi Jaradat and Reem Riyashi."

In 1978, Mughrabi led one of the most lethal terror attacks in Israel's history when she and several other Fatah faceless myrmidons hijacked a bus on Israel's Coastal Highway, killing 37 civilians, 12 of them children, and wounding over 70.

In 2003, Jaradat became one of the first female Paleostinians to carry out a suicide kaboom, blowing up a Haifa restaurant. Twenty-one people were killed in the bombing and 51 were maimed.

Riyashi blew herself up at the Erez crossing between Israel and the Gazoo Strip in 2004, killing three soldiers as well as one civilian.

"These are the acclaimed Fatah women," Fatah's Facebook administrator said of the women training for attacks.

On Wednesday, gangs linked to Fatah said they had begun launching rockets and mortar shells into Israel, in the first indication that Abbas's movement was taking part in violence emanating from Gazoo.

The Nidal Al-Amody force of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades grabbed credit for firing Grad and 107 millimeter rockets toward Ashkelon, Sderot, Netivot, Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha and the Sufa Crossing from Gazoo, starting at 5 p.m Wednesday. Communiques specifying the attacks were published on Fatah's official Facebook page.

Early Thursday morning, another armed force associated with Fatah, the Abdul Qader Husseini Battalions, grabbed credit for launching two Grad rockets
...Soviet-developed 122-mm rockets, usually launched from trucks. Newer versions are reported to have a range of up to 30 km....
at Ashkelon and four mortar shells at Kibbutz Nir Oz near Khan Yunis.

A photo depicting two members of the Husseini Battalions preparing to launch a rocket at Israel was posted on Fatah's Facebook page, its title reading "The Al-Aqsa Brigades and the Abdul Qader Husseini Brigades have proven today that they are the most loyal to the blood of the deaders. They were among the first to quickly respond to the aggressive [Israeli] operation."

Crisis Group Zeroes in on Afghan Election Dispute
[Tolo News] The International Crisis Group, a major conflict-prevention non-profit organization, released a statement on Saturday regarding the current stalemate gripping the Afghan election as well as the best possible way for it to be resolved.

The statement puts heavy pressure on the presidential candidates—Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
and Ashraf Ghani-Ahmadzai—to behave responsibly in their handling of the present process, which marks Afghanistan's first democratic transition in history.

"Millions of ballots are under review, and both sides accuse the other of widespread fraud. The final result will be less important, however, than the way the contest is decided," the statement reads. "This is a moment when Afghans must hold tight to their constitution and the rule of law, despite political turmoil."

The statement emphasizes the importance of the candidates accepting the results, and reaching the common understanding that the process must not divide the country.

The Crisis Group remarks did not hold back in recognizing how the credibility of this year's process had been called into question. "Electoral authorities' claims that eight million voters participated in the second round—a million more than were said to have voted in April—seem implausible, given reports of lower turnout in the second round. Leaked wiretaps of phone conversations involving electoral officials have further undermined confidence in the system," it reads.

According to the Crisis Group, an agreement must be made between the candidates, with the help of the international community, "on the extent and mechanics of the fraud investigations in the coming weeks."

"International observers and representatives of both camps will be required to monitor the process," the statement reads. "It is important both that it be completed by 2 August, so the constitution is adhered to and the dangers of a leadership vacuum are avoided, and that the audit be as extensive and thorough as feasible so fairness standards are met."

Roadside bomb kills 10 civilians in Afghanistan
[ARABNEWS] Roadside bombs in Afghanistan killed at least 10 people Saturday, authorities said. The deadliest attack happened in southern Kandahar province when a bomb struck a civilian car, killing civilians including five women, they said.

No group immediately grabbed credit for that blast, But Panjwayi district police chief Sultan Mohammad blamed the Taliban for the incident.

"They were traveling from Pajwai district to Kandahar city to visit a doctor and do some shopping for the upcoming Eid Al-Fitr (Moslem holiday)," said Dawa Khan Minapal, a front man for provincial governor.

"But their vehicle was targeted by a roadside kaboom freshly planted by the Taliban and this tragedy happened." He added: "Their dead bodies are still in the area and police have already transferred two maimed children from the incident to a provincial hospital."

The incident took place days after the Taliban ordered their men to avoid targeting civilians.
That's one of them there taqiyah thingies or mebbe a kitmen.
"We have to be very careful when planting roadside kabooms targeting the enemy and we have to consider ordinary lives," a Taliban statement said on July 4.
And so they have done.
In a similar incident in the eastern city of Jalalabad two people were killed when a remote control bomb went off. The target was an army vehicle but it escaped unharmed, said Abdul Zia Abdulzai, a front man for the provincial governor.

Two Dead in Fresh Karabakh Border Clashes
[An Nahar] An ethnic Armenian separatist officer in Nagorny Karabakh and an Azerbaijani soldier died in the latest raid along the disputed region's volatile frontline, the rebel defense ministry said Saturday.

Several other Azerbaijani soldiers were captured in the fighting, breakaway Armenian forces said, although Baku has made no comment on the claims.

A 37-year-old Armenian woman, Movses Gasparian, was seriously maimed in the shootout, rebels claimed.

At least 18 soldiers have been killed in a surge in violence along the border since the beginning of the year, with snipers frequently exchanging fire across the frontier.

Most have died in tit-for-tat commando raids. The dead Armenian officer was named as 42-year-old Major Sargis Abrahamyan.

The rebels claimed on Thursday that they had captured another Azerbaijani soldier after a separate raid. Baku, however, said the man named as captured was not a member of their forces.

Thousands Protest Gaza Strikes In London, Paris
[Ynet] Demonstrators crowd streets outside Israeli Embassy, French Foreign Ministry, call for end to Israeli 'massacre' in the Gazoo Strip.
Unimpressive. Remember the million or so who came out against the invasion of Iraq in 2003? This isn't anything more than some housewives and office workers getting a bit of fresh air and sunshine on their lunchbreak. Call us when the crowd sizes reach six figures.
La Belle France has both Western Europe's largest Jewish community and its largest Mohammedan population, and the French government has been walking a careful line on the Gazoo developments.

President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
issued a statement earlier this week in support of Israel that prompted criticism because it failed to mention Paleostinian victims.

He later spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyau and Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, then issued new statements expressing support for each and concern for all victims. He condemned violence and urged a return to peace talks.

In London, a spokeswoman for Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
said earlier he supported Israel in the face of attacks by Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, against Israeli civilians.

Kerry pushes plan to 'clean up' disputed Afghan vote
[Pak Daily Times] US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
Saturday held a second day of talks with Afghanistan's feuding presidential hopefuls, seeking a deal to "clean up the tally" after disputed elections.

Despite back-to-back meetings on Friday with rivals Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
and Ashraf Ghani and other officials that stretched deep into the night, US officials said an accord was not yet on the table. The deadlock over last month's run-off vote to succeed outgoing President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
has plunged Afghanistan into crisis and dented US hopes of a smooth transfer of power as Washington seeks to withdraw all its troops by late 2016.

On a day of intense diplomacy on Saturday, Kerry met Abdullah for about an hour and 20 minutes before holding talks with Ghani and meeting Karzai. Under a proposal put forward by the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
, the country's election commission would audit ballot boxes from just over 8,000 polling stations where suspicions of ballot-stuffing have been raised. While Ghani's campaign has embraced the UN plan, Abdullah's team remains sceptical, arguing the proposal to review some 44 percent of all votes cast fails to address all their concerns.

On Friday Kerry stressed that results released on Monday showing Ghani in the lead with some 56 percent of the vote were only "preliminary"."They are neither authoritative nor final, and no one should be stating a victory at this point in time," Kerry said. "We want a unified, stable, democratic Afghanistan. It is important that whoever is president is recognised by the people as having become president through a legitimate process," he said.

Ukrainian authorities struggle to win favor after rebel withdrawal from Slovyansk
[Washington Post] Ukraine's government trumpeted the rebels' recent retreat from this key crossroads town as a major victory in their months-long battle against Death Eaters in the east.

But as Slovyansk's residents clean up the rubble from destroyed homes and businesses, triumph is far from people's minds. The fighting appears far from over; central authority is largely absent; and many of this nation's long-felt divisions are deeper than ever.

Police are barely present in Slovyansk, and security bigshots say that they are unsure who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city. The rebels have moved on to the much larger city of Donetsk, with its nearly 1 million people, posing an even larger challenge to a disorganized army.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village the snowball down Jack's back had finally melted......
the same skepticism about the government in Kiev that made Slovyansk a fertile ground for separatists is as present as ever.

"The Ukrainian army can't aim properly," said Ilya Lazarenko, 25, who was trying to salvage food from what used to be the kitchen in his once-elegant home at an intersection near Slovyansk. The top floor was blown away, leaving scraps of the metal roof creaking in the wind, a casualty of poor targeting by government artillery, he said.

"They could have been more careful,'' he said.

The pro-Russian separatists had held several government buildings in Slovyansk since mid-April in what became the centerpiece of the rebel uprising in this heavily culturally Russian region. The February ouster of Russian-friendly president Viktor Yanukovych only deepened fears in eastern Ukraine that ethnic Russians would be targeted with discrimination or worse, and the flames were fanned by Russian state-backed media, which depicted Ukraine's new pro-European rulers as neo-Nazis.

...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
has sent reinforcements to several cities in Reef Damascus amid reports of a possible attack on the region by the Syrian opposition's fighters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday.

"Hizbullah continues to send reinforcements to areas in al-Qalamoun plains and to the surroundings of al-Zabadani (50 kilometers northwest of Damascus)," the Observer announced in a statement, noting that this might be part of a plan for an attack on the region by the Syrian regime's forces aided by Hizbullah.

Informed sources have told the Saudi daily Oqath that the bodies of three Hizbullah fighters have recently been transferred to Leb from the neighboring country.

The fighters had died in an operation launched by the Syrian rebels against party posts in al-Qalamoun, according to Oqath's article, which was published on Saturday.

"The losses of lives among Hizbullah fighters have increased significantly after the Syrian army retook control of al-Qalamoun"
"The losses of lives among Hizbullah fighters have increased significantly after the Syrian army retook control of al-Qalamoun," the sources said, remarking that this might have been due to the geography of the region "especially in the Arsal al-Ward area which is difficult to completely seize."

"Hizbullah leaders are now mapping plans to deal with the situation (in al-Qalamoun), especially amid fears of a possible large attack by Syria's opposition in the coming few weeks," they added.

Fighting continued in al-Qalamoun between the Damascus regime forces, aided by Hizbullah, and the opposition's fighters despite the "fall" of the region in the government troops' hands.

In June, 10 Hizbullah fighters died while taking part in the ongoing Syrian war, most of whom were killed in an attack by the oppositions' fighters in the town of Rankous in Reef Damascus.

These reports were confirmed on websites affiliated with the Syrian opposition and with Hizbullah, which also revealed the fighters' identity.

Hizbullah had announced more than one year ago that its fighters are taking part in the ongoing war in neighboring Syria to defend the country against the Takfiri

Gaza Medics: 15 Killed In Israeli Airstrike
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] Medical officials in the Gazoo Strip say 15 people have been killed in an Israeli Arclight airstrike that attacked a target near a mosque.

Health Ministry official Ashraf al-Kidra says the Arclight airstrike took place just as people were ending evening prayers at the mosque.

It was not clear what the target of the Arclight airstrike was.

It was the deadliest single Arclight airstrike during Israel's current 5-day-old offensive in Gazoo.

The Israeli military says it is ordering Paleostinians living in the northern Gazoo Strip to evacuate the area "for their own safety."

In a statement Saturday, the military said it would send messages to residents overnight to leave the area.

Brig. Gen. Motti Almoz, the chief military front man, said Israel planned to hit the area with heavy force in the next 24 hours as it steps up an offensive against Gazoo myrmidons.
