Notre Dame Cathedral is burning
[MarketWatch] Flames and smoke engulfed the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday evening, the fire service told the AFP News Agency.
Lots of tweeted videos at the link.
Update at 1:50 pm EDT: The Daily Mail is updating here.
Firefighters are battling a massive blaze which broke out at the world-famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris this evening.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the fire broke out in the attic of the monument before spreading across the roof.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the blaze was first reported at 5.50pm (GMT) and the building was evacuated soon after.

Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to restoration works as the peak of the church is currently undergoing a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project.

#3  Thus far it does not look like a jihadi attack, so that’s something. And if the fire is stopped in the attics, the damage won’t be as great as it first appears. Possibly caused by an electrical short in old wiring?

Looks like live-stream at Ace's; looks evening time which would be right.

And yeah, ok that is a big building that that is big fire, but it is right next to a major river and that's all the water they can put on it? Surprised the scaffolding hasn't peeled off yet.

#17  Fair enough, BP.

Latest from the Daily Mail link:

Authorities say there were no deaths from the fire although declined to comment on the number of injuries.

A spokesman said the entire wooden frame of the cathedral would likely come down, and that the vault of the edifice could be threatened too.

Cathedral spokesman Andre Finot told Le Monde: 'Everything is burning. The frame - which dates to the 19th century on one side and the 13th century on the other – there will be nothing left.

'We will have to wait and see whether the vault, which protects the Cathedral, will be touched by the fire on not.'

Deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire told BFMTV, 'A special mission has been launched to attempt to save all the works of art we can.'

#19  I say the 48-hour rule is in effect.

Stuff happens on construction sites. Usually involves temporary space heaters this early into a project. Later occurrences involve welding, soldering or cutting.

Bothersome question as to how many construction workers were of the 'jihadic persuasion', though.

#20  Would have thought their would be enough burnable content in a stone cathedral with lead roof. Rennovations mean scaffolding and probably tarps, and the roof would have some wood beams to hold it up, but still. A bigger fire than I would have guessed.

#24  I get that maybe this was a fire which if not extinguished in the first 10 minutes, this would happen.

What I don't understand is why anything developed to throw water on high-rise buildings isn't there pumping the Seine dry turning this building into a giant cistern.

So far everything main structure wise looks intact. That is, more or less, the fixable things have burned. Not an uncommon thing back in the day when cathedrals would be struck by lightning (legend was, this is why the lead sheeting, which does make some sense). The problem I see is if a wall, the stone work, comes down, are there still enough people trained in stonework to rebuild?

#30  The damages may not be that dramatic. Thy certainly are substantial, but if you know a bit about how Gothic cathedrals are built, a burning rood is not the worst case scenario.

The spire was replaced in the 19th century, the roof can be rebuilt, the stone vaults seem to have withstood.
Posted by: European Conservative || 04/15/2019 17:26 Comments || Top||

#31  Take a minute, go to SteveS's link. It is spot on.

I can only add that if a wall collapse is possible, you want to clear an area away from the wall at least the height of the wall, preferable twice the height.

This is a very large building. If you have never been there, try to find something of scale in a picture or video.

Also, the location is difficult to access.

With the spire collapse damage unknown, and collapsing roof and wall concerns, it may the only thing left is what we call at least out here, "surround and drown".

If they put together a team of enough volunteers in full PPE SCBA to hump enough large hose to attack a burning, collapsing tower, the clanging you hear will not be from the bells.

As for the scaffolding, it appears the stonework protected it from the heat, and the radiant heat wasn't enough to cause obvious damage. Bet you wouldn't want to touch it. Bet it isn't thin either, just looks that way because of the distance.

*Looks like they got a couple nozzles where they may be able to spray the towers - the concern is the bells, specifically the rope holding them. Should have some air support by now, a spotter directing the nozzles, maybe able to get some footage of interior damage.

#36  would French media actually tell the truth if it were Muslims?

Maybe, charger. I lean toward probably because this is an important building and the fire was watched around the world. But also that the first reports in that direction — should that be how it happened — would say lone wolf with a history of mental problems.

But I must also add something a friend posted today. As background, she has pretty much been bedridden with what looks like chronic fatigue syndrome for about a quarter century, which she references as the frame for her comment:

In 1993, I first became suddenly and dramatically incapacitated with the thing that has grown gentler but has also become my daily life. So I mention this because back then, the only thing I had to pass the long hours of lying perfectly still was the radio, and in that first week, a historic church burned down roof first, like Notre Dame. It wasn't .0001% as important a place as Notre Dame, but it was the church I had been attending.

The fire was indeed started by renovation, as may be true in Paris. In the local NY case, they had already cleaned up and locked the building, and one guy was using a blow torch to just melt a bit more tar on the outside of a stone facing. He didn't realize the stone was thin and that the wood behind it was catching fire. When they saw the siding above the stone facing starting to melt, they knew what was happening, but none of the crew had a key to unlock the door again. It was rural, where it took a while for fire crews to arrive, and the wind was high that day. The fire spread inside the walls and burst out on the roof.

I didn't see it, of course. I was confined to bed, not moving. I just heard the hourly reports on the fire all day. Seeing the horrific pictures of Notre Dame, I feel like I can't afford to grieve, but I feel a sense of standing in history and hearing the hourly reports across time. Nobody can imagine a Paris without that cathedral.

European Conservative, there are enough photos of the stained glass — and stained glass is easy enough to create — that they will be reproduced. We have the example of the reconstruction in recent decades of what was destroyed in Western Germany to have a feel for what might be done with the interiors afterward, assuming the French choose to afford it. My mother’s cousin was one of those who walked around Hildesheim collecting donations to rebuild the beautiful medieval buildings of the city center (the thousand year old rosebush survived without additional aid).

Naked Man Fatally Shot by Security Guard During Alleged Knife Attack at Palmdale, CA McDonald's
[KTLA5] A security guard shot and killed a man following an alleged knife attack on an elderly man at a Palmdale McDonald's on Sunday afternoon, witnesses said.

The violence took place about 4:30 p.m. at the restaurant at 2427 E. Avenue S.

A man was shot by a security guard amid an alleged knife attack at a McDonald's restaurant in Palmdale on April 14, 2019.

Juan Paiz, who owns the involved security company, Paiz Patrol, said he was still gathering information.

The attacker had crashed a car into a nearby Carl's Jr. restaurant prior to heading to the McDonald's and stripping off his clothes, according to officials and witnesses.

"(He) apparently started stabbing several patrons," Paiz said. "At that point, security approached him. He tried to stab a security officer and the security officer defended himself by firing his service weapon."

The attacker stabbed an 88-year-old man who was eating with his grandson, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. Brandon Dean said. The victim was in stable condition.

The wounded suspect, described as a 29-year-old man, was taken away in an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later, officials said.

Deputies found the suspect's knife at the scene, according to Deputy Tracey Koerner of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

Declassified documents show CIA knew South American juntas killed dissidents abroad
WASHINGTON (Tribune News Service) ‐ With the blessing of a CIA bent on thwarting Soviet expansion, South American military juntas together formed a special unit charged with going to France and elsewhere abroad to exterminate leftist opposition leaders.

While the cooperation of military dictatorships was widely known, details about this special unit, called Teseo, were not, until the release Friday of the final 7,500 declassified U.S. documents shared with Argentina and the world.

President Donald Trump had promised his Argentine counterpart, Mauricio Macri, that the third and final tranche of U.S. documents would be shared, ending a process that began under President Barack Obama to make publicly available documents about a dark period in U.S. history. In all, roughly 47,000 U.S. military, diplomatic and intelligence cables pertaining to Argentina's military junta were declassified.

"The release of records constitutes the largest declassification of the United States Government records directly to a foreign government in history," said a letter from Trump to Macri accompanying the release. "My hope is that access to these records provides the people of Argentina information to help in the healing process."

Details about the Teseo assassination unit were in a CIA document dated May 1976, part of a batch of documents delivered Friday that had to do with Operation Condor. That was a clandestine effort pushed hardest by Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet that grew to involve military rulers in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.

Woman swipes Rolex from man sleeping in NYC Midtown hotel
[NYP] Cops are looking for a raven-haired Rolex thief who allegedly fleeced a 60-year-old man while he was asleep inside his Manhattan hotel room.

The victim claims to have woken up Sunday at around 10 a.m. ‐ with his watch missing and thousands of dollars in charges made through his cell phone ‐ following a night together with the female suspect, according to police.

He told cops that when he went to sleep inside his room at the Maxwell Hotel on Lexington Avenue, the unidentified woman ‐ who has a tattoo of the word "Truth" on her neck ‐ was still present. She was gone when he woke up, and so was his Rolex.

Upon further inspection, cops said the man discovered the transactions on his cell phone, which totaled $2,000. It’s unclear what the suspect allegedly bought. Cops described her as a Hispanic woman with long brown hair who was last seen wearing a red halter top and acid washed blue jeans. She is about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and approximately 25 years old.

[MAIL] President Trump has reportedly raised more than $30million for his reelection bid in the first quarter of 2019 - which is roughly equal to the amount raised by the top two Democratic candidates combined.

Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign’s director of communications, says that overall the president has so far amassed a whopping $40.8million war chest.

The substantial funds give Trump a head start over his Democratic rivals, who are fighting to emerge from a field of 47 18 candidates, according to CNN.

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont is the Democratic candidate who has raised the most funds.

Coast Guard rescues 23 people escaping Castro's communist utopia
[NYP] NEW ORLEANS ‐ The US Coast Guard said it worked with a cruise ship to rescue 23 people adrift for days in the Gulf of Mexico.
Obama descends from podium to greet fellow traveler Raúl Castro at the Mandela Memorial service 5 December 2013, in Johannesburg, SA.
The Coast Guard issued a statement Sunday saying 22 Cubans started traveling on a wooden boat from Cuba to Mexico before losing power and drifting for three days. A Cuban-Mexican man took them aboard his sports fishing boat, but then its engines malfunctioned and the group drifted three more days.

The Coast Guard said it was contacted early Sunday by a brother of one of the Cubans. In addition to launching its own effort to find the disabled fishing boat, the Coast Guard alerted the Carnival Fantasy.

The cruise ship took the 23 people aboard within hours, about 130 nautical miles off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

The statement said two of the people rescued had minor medical issues and were treated by medical staff on the cruise ship. It added that the 23 people would be transferred Tuesday to US Customs and Border Protection and Coast Guard Investigative Services in Mobile, Alabama.

Here it comes: Rep. Tlaib blasts Dem leadership
[American Thinker] The first overt sign of the trouble that lies ahead for Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat leadership with the emergence of a radical Muslim wing of the party arrived Saturday.

Following the discovery of a video clip of Rep. Omar referring to 911 as "some people did something," the blowback has been fierce, including in deep blue New York City, where the wounds of death and destruction (and lingering health issues among first responders) still are very painful. Rep. Tlaib is not happy with what she perceives as inadequate support for her fellow Muslima in Congress, and extended the criticism on this specific issue by another Twitter user into a broader attack on the party leadership:

To say that Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Ihan Omar have chips on their shoulders would be an understatement. Both women embrace the notion of Muslim victimhood in a party that stokes the grievances of a variety of minorities who are encouraged to see themselves as victims and seek balm in the form of concessions from the majority. When the interests of these subgroups clash, the standard operating procedure of the Dems has been to co-opt the minority leadership and have them smooth over those conflicts in favor of the goodies that come from unity at the expense of the malign majority against whom they nurse their wounds.

But when religion becomes the basis for grievance, and when the radical version of that religion seeks as its sacred mission the destruction of an existing state and the imposition of a global theocracy based on its dogma, compromise becomes much more difficult.

Crosses covered with cloth in Italian cemetery to avoid offending Muslims
[VOE] The crosses on graves in an Italian cemetery in Bologna have been covered with black cloth in order not to offend those who may come from another religion.

The cemetery has also installed motorised blackout curtains in a local chapel to hide Roman Catholic symbols during ceremonies involving other denominations, Il Giornale reports.

Many have expressed criticism including Forza Italia deputy Galeazzo Bignami who denounced the move saying those looking not to offend were disrespecting Christian values and he added, "even more so the memory of our dead, hiding them behind ’motorised tents’ in a cemetery to avoid offending other religions".

"If the administrators are ashamed of our tradition and our culture, they should go and hide themselves and not just behind a motorised tent. If they are not able to bring respect for the living at least they have the decency to leave the dead alone and not involve them in foolishness", he added.

Conservative-populist Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni also commented on the case saying, "Using the excuse of respect for others, they lack respect for our Catholic culture and our traditions. Now the Left is beyond fanaticism. This is ideological delirium".

The incident is also unlikely to have been well met by populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s League party which proposed in 2018 to require a crucifix be hung in all public buildings including train stations, airports, universities, and embassies.

ISIS plans to copy Paris Bataclan massacre with a swathe of fresh attacks across Europe are revealed on a hard drive
[MAIL] Shocking documents detailing a wave of ISIS attacks across Europe have been discovered on a hard drive dropped by members of the terror group as they fled their last stronghold in Syria earlier this year.

The chilling plans are believed to be inspired by the terrorist attack in Paris four years ago, when ISIS killers stormed the Bataclan concert hall and other areas of the city and killed 130 people.

Two years later, they committed another atrocity in Manhattan where jihadis crashed into cyclists and runners in the city, killing eight.

ISIS are now planning to repeat this horrific attacks in a new wave of atrocities across Europe, including an attack on a high-speed train network in Germany and on an oil pipeline in Switzerland.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov parrots Dem talking points
[MAIL] Russian leaders are slamming the U.S., saying the world has lost faith in the country as a global leader.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced a shift in international power on Friday during an annual address at Moscow's diplomatic academy.

Taking hits at Washington, Lavrov declared that the U.S. is no longer a leading national power and alleged the country has resorted to pressuring and blackmailing other powers to assert its dominance.

He said today's world is marked by 'multipolarity' and that 'the emergence of new centers of power to maintain stability in the world requires the search for a balance of interests and compromises'.

'Unfortunately, our Western partners led by the United States do not want to agree on common approaches to solving problems,' he said according to Newsweek.

Foto selfie tragedy at Fordham University's Keating Clock Tower
[MAIL] A 22-year-old student who fell 40 feet from Fordham University's bell tower early Sunday morning has died.

The school confirmed Sydney Paige Monfries, from Portland, Oregon, had died in a letter to students Sunday, just weeks before she was due to graduate.

School President Joseph McShane wrote: 'It is with great sadness that I report that Sydney Monfries, a senior at Fordham College at Rose Hill, died today after sustaining a fall inside the Keating Clock tower in the early hours of the morning.

'Our hearts go out to Sydney’s parents, and her family and friends‐theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief.

'There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise ‐ and mere weeks from graduation. Fordham will confer a bachelor’s degree upon Sydney posthumously, which we will present to her parents at the appropriate time.'

[Breitbart] Appearing Friday on the Fox News Channel’s The Five, guest panelist Geraldo Rivera defended Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for downplaying the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001, claiming the freshman congresswoman doesn’t have the "language" to adequately express herself about the tragedy.

#2  Bullshit, pure and unadulterated. The honourable Congresswoman was born in 1981, making her twenty bloody years old on the day in question. So her life paused that day, along with the rest of us across the planet, while she waited to see if we were about to have war in the streets. And as a Muslim, she was no doubt aware that many Muslims in the country illegally — mostly overstayed student and visitor visas — suddenly left the country with their families and whatever easily portable wealth they could gather on short notice.

Though given the community she came from, she is probably also aware that on certain streets there was dancing that day, and candy given to children, just as my darling mother-in-law witnessed in the Yemeni neighbourhood of Lackawanna, NY.

Peace Loving Russians in Africa: Inside a military training centre in CAR
[Aljazeera] Russia says it wants to help establish peace in CAR, but others believe it may exploit resources and cause instability.

Russia is back in the Central African Republic (CAR).

In a military training base located on former palace grounds southwest of the capital Bangui, hundreds of Russian fighters, described as army reservists, are training CAR government soldiers in preparation for deployment along the country's border.

The CAR government hopes to regain control of the country, which is torn by sectarian violence and the operations of 14 rebel groups. CAR, formerly colonised by France, is rich in strategically important minerals, diamonds and gold.

Russia has sought influence in CAR before, when the Soviet Union developed ties during the reign of former President Jean-Bedel Bokassa before he was overthrown in 1979.

In 2017, CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting, asking for help. It was a meeting that stunned many on the security council, especially France, which had advised the presidents of CAR for years.

Presidential Hopeful Marianne Williamson on Reparations: ‘Whatever It Costs' It's a 'Debt We Owe'
[PJ] WASHINGTON ‐ Marianne Williamson, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, argued that reparations for descendants of slaves are a "debt we owe" as a society.

Williamson has suggested allocating $100 billion to a council that would spend the money on programs that benefit African-American ancestors of slaves as a form reparations.

Williamson was asked how she would pay for reparations, specifically where she would allocate the money from in the federal budget. In response, Williamson said that "nobody" asks that same question when tax cuts are passed or when wars are waged.

"This is not a debt we can afford to delay any longer. The economic restitution for two and a half centuries of slavery followed by 100 years of domestic terrorism. Germany has paid $89 billion to Jewish organizations since World War II," Williamson said during a CNN town hall on Sunday evening.

"It's simply a debt we owe. This country will not heal until we take a serious moral inventory. A nation must undergo the same level of deep moral inventory [and] admission of our character defects. Racism is a character defect. Let's end this. Let's fix this. Let's solve this. Reparations won't end everything but it will be a profound gift. It implies a mea culpa. It implies a recognition of a debt owed and therefore, it carries not only economic power but spiritual force -- whatever it costs, it's time to do this," she added.

Reparations embodies both sides of the lefty "by association" coin. POTUS may be trying to make everyone 'crazy' with sanctuary cities threat: Sen. Rick Scott
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump may have threatened to transport illegal immigrants to so-called sanctuary cities to "make everybody crazy" and generate media attention, Republican U.S. Senator Rick Scott said on Sunday.

Trump said on Friday he was considering sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities, prompting U.S. mayors to accept such an offer as the battle over border security rages.

Sanctuary cities are local jurisdictions that generally give undocumented immigrants safe harbor by refusing to use their resources to help enforce federal immigration laws that could lead to deportations.

Since many such jurisdictions are Democratic strongholds, the proposal was seen by critics of Trump as an attempt by the president to punish Democrats for refusing to support funding for the construction of a wall on the southern U.S. border.

It would, however, likely encounter a slew of logistical and legal obstacles, with some legal experts and advocacy groups saying the proposal could violate federal laws, including those barring the use of government funds for political purposes.

Man sues parents for getting rid of his vast pron collection
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) ‐ An Indiana man is suing his parents for getting rid of his vast pornography collection, which he estimates is worth $29,000.

The 40-year-old man last week filed a lawsuit in federal court in Michigan, where he moved in with his parents in 2016 following a divorce.

He says that when he moved out 10 months later, they delivered his things to his new home in Muncie, Indiana, but that his 12 boxes of pornographic films and magazines were missing. His parents admit they dumped the porn, which included titles such as "Frisky Business" and "Big Bad Grannys."

The man filed a complaint with police, but the Ottawa County prosecutor declined to press charges. The lawsuit includes an email excerpt from the man’s father, who told his son, "I did you a big favor by getting rid of all this stuff."

The man is seeking triple financial damages of roughly $87,000.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Murderer Pablo Serrano-Vitorino no longer a threat to society
[Breitbart] A previously deported illegal alien who was charged with murdering five Americans in 2016 was found dead in his jail cell this week, Missouri officials announced.

As Breitbart News has chronicled, 40-year-old Pablo Serrano-Vitorino, an illegal alien from Mexico, was accused and charged with murdering five American men in March 2016. Serrano-Vitorino, prosecutors allege, had gone on a murder spree with a rifle across Kansas and Missouri, shooting and killing five men in total.

Those men included:

- 41-year-old Michael Capps
- 29-year-old Austin Harter
- 27-year-old Clint Harter
- 36-year-old Jeremy Waters

The Angel Families of the victims had previously filed suit against the federal government, claiming federal authorities had mistakenly released the illegal alien back into American society after he had already been deported from the U.S.

This week, Missouri officials announced that Serrano-Vitorino had been founded dead in his jail cell, where he was awaiting a murder trial for the killings and was facing the death penalty. After being arrested for the murders, the illegal alien attempted suicide but was stopped and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Serrano-Vitorino’s death is now under investigation by state officials.

US ‘blitzkrieg’ to replace Venezuela govt. has failed -- Lavrov
[ALMASDARNEWS] Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the US "blitzkrieg" to replace the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
has failed, speaking at a meeting of the Council on Foreign and Defence Policy in Moscow on Saturday.

Lavrov went on to say that nevertheless the US "hasn’t left the goal of overthrowing the legitimate president" of Venezuela.

"In my opinion, yesterday’s interview of [the US Secretary of State] Mike Pompeo, where he clearly stated that military intervention is not excluded, directly evidences this," Lavrov stated.

Russian top diplomat said, however, that Russia continues to work with the US where it is "in the interests" of both countries, mentioning "dialogue on counter-terrorism," the "deconflicting mechanism in Syria," as well as contacts on Afghanistan, the Korean Peninsula, and "practical cooperation in Space."

Pompeo accuses Iran of supporting terrorism in Latin America
[ALMASDARNEWS] US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Iran of supporting terrorism in Latin America in an interview with the Voice of America while touring the continent.

"There’s no doubt. Iranian money remains in South America... supporting Hezbollah, supporting transnational criminal organizations, supporting efforts at terrorism throughout the region," the top US diplomat said when he was asked if Tehran is present in the region.

He also branded the Islamic Theocratic Republic "the world’s largest state sponsor of terror", noting: "That’s a global threat".

He also took aim at Venezuela’s elected president, Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
, claiming that he and "his henchmen have destroyed this nation". He slammed the current leader for cooperating with Russia and Cuba.

"He’s handed over all his power to the Cubans and to the Russians", Pompeo said.

The US secretary of state, at the same time, downplayed his recent invective against China’s presence in Venezuela when he claimed that their "financial interventions have helped destroy the country" and blamed China for injecting "corrosive capital into the economic bloodstream, giving life to corruption".

"We want China to thrive and prosper. Here’s what we don’t want, especially in South America. We don’t want China to just show up with bags full of money and bribe officials.... we don’t want corrupt activity", he said in the VoA interview.

On Sunday, Pompeo is to visit the Columbian city of Cucuta on the Venezuelan border, where the US humanitarian cargo for Venezuela was stalled, and will reportedly meet refugees there. During his tour across South America, he has already visited Peru, Paraguay and Chile, lashing out at Venezuelan President Maduro and Russia and China’s presence in the region.

History of violence
[DAWN] AROUND a hundred years ago, Afghan emir Abdul Rahman declared war on the Hazara

people. The emir’s armies killed, raped, and enslaved thousands of Hazaras. As ’mule loads’ of severed heads made their way back to Kabul, much of the community fled to Pakistain and Iran.

Fast forward some years, and the men and women that once escaped an Afghan despot are now escaping Pakistain’s sectarian holy warriors. Where once they ran to neighbouring lands, the Hazaras now content themselves with the other end of the earth. Yet even this final flight is unsafe: scores have drowned on the way to Australia, their boats capsizing amid waves and whirlpools.

#1  History of violence is basically human history. Some time back there was an old copy of Guinness' book of records that was focused on that history. If I recall correctly, they calculated that in the historical record (cultures and civilization that could keep records), there had only been about 200 years of so of peace in the world. The operation had sparked outrage among local residents who were demanding immediate release of women.

In the meantime, the National Directorate of Security issued a statement on Saturday afternoon, stating that the two women were held by female soldiers of the directorate.

The statement further added that the presidential palace had issued instructions to launch an investigation into the incident and to respond to protests of local residents.

Emphasizing that the case is a sensitive issue and has links with the national security of the country, NDS said the Afghan intelligence operatives conducted their operation considering and fully respecting the enforced laws, Islamic principles, and traditional values of the country.

The National Directorate of Security also added that the two women who were temporarily arrested have been released after contacts were established with their family.

In the meantime, the National Directorate of Security also noted that the office of the president has instructions to Afghan national defense and security forces and their international partners to take necessary measures to ensure safety of the women and kiddies who are being used as human shields by terrorist groups in a cowardly manner and in violation of Islamic and Afghan traditional values.

Philippines: Tests confirm death of IS-linked chief Abu Dar
[DW] DNA tests have confirmed the death of the last known leader of an Islamist assault on Marawi city in the southern Philippines. Authorities feared that Abu Dar could use looted wealth to revivify the battered insurgency.

Officials in the Philippines on Sunday confirmed the death of Owaida Marohombsar, who went by the nom de guerre of Abu Dar,
...more fully Owayda Benito Marohombsar. He was also known as Humam Abdul Najb, a cousin of the Maute brothers and successor to Isnilon Hapilon as emir. Abu Dar was a full-blooded member of the Maranao tribe, and grew up in Pagayawan town in Lanao del Sur...
after DNA tests carried out by US authorities.

Marohombsar was one of few leaders to survive a 2017 attack on the city of Marawi, where he managed to escaped with large amounts of cash looted during the siege. Philippines authorities feared he would use the wealth to rebuild the Dawla Islamiya group, an alliance of pro-Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) fighters.

Manila confirmed the Islamist leader as one of four bandidos turbans killed in a clash with the Philippine military in March.

The Philippines hailed the killing as a significant development that would hamper efforts by IS to establish a presence in the region.

PURSUIT OF REMAINING FIGHTERS
"This is another milestone in our campaign to finish and defeat ISIS and local terror groups in the country," said Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano, using an acronym of the Islamic State group.

"For now, his group is leaderless. We are monitoring who will replace Dar," said Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

The army's Brig. Gen. Romeo Brawner said troops would pursue Marohombsar's remaining fighters, based not far from Marawi.

LEADING FIGURE OF RESURGENCE
Marohombsar is believed to have escaped Marawi with a large amount of looted cash and jewelry. Regional official Zia Adiong estimated at the time that Marohombsar got away from Marawi with at least 30 million pesos ($580,000; €510,000) in stolen money.

According to a Philippine police profile, Marohombsar, a native of the Lanao del Sur region, which includes Marawi, underwent military and explosives training in Afghanistan in 2005.
Oh? A made man, then.
He returned to the southern Philippines a few years later and established an gang called the Khilafa Islamiyyah Mindanao.

MONTHSLONG URBAN BATTLE
The Philippine government has signed a peace deal with the largest Moslem rebel group in the country, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The agreement has this year seen Moslem fighters become administrators of their own five-province autonomous region. The southern Philippines is home to most of the Roman Catholic nation's minority Moslems.

Remnants of the MILF gang, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
, who earlier broke away from the main group, were responsible for the attack on Marawi.

Dawla Islamiya launched its attack on Marawi in May 2017 and fought within and around the city for five months. The assault was quelled after months of ground attacks and Arclight airstrikes by the military.

Among the Islamist leaders killed was Isnilon Hapilon, IS's anointed "emir" in Southeast Asia.

Airstrike Kills Deputy Leader of IS in Somalia
[VOA News] The deputy leader of the Islamic State

group in Somalia has been killed in an Arclight airstrike, a Somali regional minister told VOA.

Abdisamad Mohammed Gallan, security Minister of the Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
region, told VOA Somali the airstrike that killed Abdihakim Mohammed Ibrahim, known as Dhoqob, took place Sunday between the villages of Hol Anod and Hiriro.

Gallan said the strike hit the vehicle Dhoqob and another passenger were travelling in. He said both men were killed but the other person has not yet been identified.

"The vehicle was burned," said a witness who didn't want to be named.

IS Somalia is led by Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin, a former scholar for al-Shabaab
... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
. In October 2015 he defected from the group and pledged his allegiance to IS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
Dhoqob was Mumin's right-hand-man and has appeared in videos produced by the group. Mumin himself survived another airstrike in his mountainous hideout in Bari region in November 2017.

"Killing one of their top leaders will speed up their eradication," Gallan said.

Puntland officials have not commented on who carried out the attack but the U.S. military in Africa has been conducting relentless strikes against gunnies in Somalia. This year alone, U.S. has carried out more than 30 airstrikes, all of them against al-Shabaab.

U.S. Military Wary of China’s Foothold in Venezuela
[FOREIGNPOLICY] As U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s national security team mulls a military intervention to oust Venezuela’s strongman president, Nicolás Maduro, the Pentagon is watching China’s commercial and financial creep in the crisis-gripped nation with growing alarm.

In an interview with Foreign Policy, Adm. Craig Faller, the four-star military officer who heads U.S. Southern Command, pointed to a Chinese disinformation campaign designed to blame the United States for the blackouts that devastated Venezuela in recent weeks.

Maduro, whose government is backed by China, Russia, and Cuba, has himself publicly accused the U.S. Defense Department of causing the blackouts. Following the power failures, Beijing offered to help the Venezuelan government restore its grid.

"China came out publicly, a state front man, implying the blackouts were attributable to U.S. cyberattacks," Faller said during a recent trip to Washington, D.C. "That is just such a blatant lie. The blackouts are attributed to Maduro’s inept leadership, corruption, inattention to his people, and lack of concern for any humanity."

The Pentagon is worried about China in other arenas as well. In the Pacific, China is building up its military capability, intimidating its smaller neighbors, and threatening Taiwan. In Africa, Beijing is using debt diplomacy to gain control of crucial ports and other infrastructure. And in Europe, the Trump administration is pushing NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
to address potential Chinese cyberthreats and commercial threats.

"I think the biggest threat to democracy and the way of life around the world is the trend that we see in China," Faller said.

He said China was trying to assert economic control in Venezuela by investing in infrastructure and providing hefty loans that Caracas would have difficulty paying back. Much of Beijing’s financial interest in Venezuela is tied to loans-for-oil deals struck between the two countries in 2007. By 2014, the China Development Bank had provided Venezuela with more than $30 billion in loans tied to oil production.

Over 20 people killed, wounded after jihadists attack Aleppo city
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
fired a large number of artillery shells and missiles towards Aleppo city this afternoon, causing several casualties and significant damage to many buildings.

According to a source from Aleppo city, the attack began when the jihadists detonated an IED inside the Sukkari District; this was followed by a flurry of missiles and artillery shells that were fired from the outskirts of the city.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham primary targeted the al-Khalidiyah District and Nile Street in Aleppo, killing and wounding more than 20 people in the process.

The jihadist attack was reportedly in response to the heavy Arclight airstrikes that were launched by the Russian Air Force on the Idlib Governorate.

These Russian airstrikes targeted Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s supply route along the Aleppo-Idlib Highway near the key town of Ariha.

Turkish special forces deployed to Idlib border
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Ottoman Turkish military deployed its special forces to the border of the Syrian province of Idlib last night, the Asharq al-Aswat publication reported on Sunday.

According to the publication, the military convoy transported several commandos through the southern region of the Hatay Province, where they ultimately took up positions along the Idlib border.

This move by the Ottoman Turkish military comes just days after they deployed a large number of soldiers to the northern countryside of Aleppo.

The Ottoman Turkish troops were specifically deployed to the outskirts of two important cities: Jarabulus and Manbij.

Manbij is currently under the control of a local military council that is loyal to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Israeli attack on Masyaf destroyed Syrian missile launcher
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Israeli Arclight airstrikes on the Syrian city of Masyaf managed to destroy a missile launcher, a new report said on Saturday.

At approximately 2:30 A.M. (local time) on Saturday morning, the Israeli Air Force launched several airstrikes over the city of Masyaf in western Hama.

According to report from the city in western Hama, the Israeli airstrikes hit a Syrian M-600 ballistic missile launcher (AKA "Maysaloun") near the Masyaf National Hospital.

A picture of the destroyed M-600 missile launcher was posted on Saturday; it would show the complete destruction of the Syrian military’s weapon.

Despite erecting their S-300 anti-aircraft missiles near the city of Masyaf, the Syrian military did not actually use this system.

A source from the Syrian military said that the units authorized to use the S-300 system have yet to complete training.

Satellite firm releases images of site bombed in airstrike attributed to Israel
[IsraelTimes] Buildings destroyed by jets late Friday reportedly housed missile production facility; several Iranian and pro-Iranian holy warriors said killed, 17 injured.
Labelled photographs can be seen at the link.
An Israeli satellite imaging firm on Sunday released images of a Syrian military base that was targeted in an Arclight airstrike in the predawn hours of Saturday morning, which was attributed to Israel.

A large hangar and three nearby buildings were destroyed in the attack on the facility, near the city of Masyaf in the western Hama province, according to the satellite images analyzed and distributed by ImageSat International.

The structures hit were reportedly used in the production of missiles.

"ISI assesses that all the elements and/or equipment inside are completely destroyed as well," the firm said.

According to a report by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in Arabic, a number of Iranian "elements" and pro-Iranian holy warriors were killed in the alleged attack, and 17 people were maimed.

The facility targeted in the strike was built from 2014 to 2016 next to an existing Syrian military base, according to ISI.

Syria’s official state news agency SANA said Israel targeted the base in Masyaf at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, but that Syrian air defenses intercepted the attack, downing some of the missiles fired. The regime mouthpiece said the interception resulted in the destruction of several buildings and the wounding of three "fighters."

The area is known to house Iranian forces and their Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah.

Israel has reportedly conducted a number of strikes on sites around Masyaf in recent years.

As a rule, Israel does not comment on specific airstrikes in Syria, but does generally acknowledge conducting operations there.
Ynet adds:
The site is believed to be related to Iranian ambitions to produce precise surface-to-surface missiles on Syrian soil. The images show S-300 anti-aircraft batteries operated by the Assad regime as well as an S-400 battery operated by the Russian military assisting the regime.

The report by ISI states that the site that was struck is indeed a missile production facility and can be used to assemble missile parts and improve their accuracy.

The report also states that the site lacks facilities for the manufacture of missile engines or warheads, as no reinforced structures were observed.

Palestinian governor of Jerusalem rearrested by Israeli police
[IsraelTimes] Adnan Geith has been scooped up several times in recent months in connection with a land sale investigation.

Israeli police tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
the Paleostinian governor of Jerusalem on Sunday, after he allegedly violated an order previously given to him by authorities, police and his lawyer said.

The governor, Adnan Gheith, has been arrested several times in recent months in connection with an investigation related to a land sale.

His lawyer Mohammed Mahmud said he had been given a six-month order not to visit the West Bank or contact certain people there, and police accused him of violating the order.

Police front man Micky Rosenfeld confirmed that Gheith had been arrested and was being questioned, but could not provide further details.

Official Paleostinian news agency Wafa said he was released later Sunday and given a NIS 1,000 fine ($280).

PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
appointed Ghaith, a resident of Jerusalem’s Silwan neighborhood and a longtime Fatah activist, to the role of PA Jerusalem governor late last August.

In his role, Ghaith is responsible for overseeing PA activity in the neighborhoods within its jurisdiction, on the edges and outside of Jerusalem.

Police had previously investigated Gheith over suspicions he was involved in the Paleostinian Authority’s arrest last October of American-Paleostinian Issam Akel, who was accused of involvement in selling an East Jerusalem building to Jewish buyers.

Such sales are considered treasonous among Paleostinians concerned with Israeli settlers buying property in East Jerusalem.

Israel seldom arrests high-ranking PA officials. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
Israeli security forces have arrested Ghaith many times in the past several years, including on suspicion of incitement, his brother Hani said.

Paleostinian officials have condemned his arrests and claimed it was intended to pressure the Paleostinian leadership over Akel’s case.

Akel was sentenced to life by a Paleostinian court, but he was reportedly later allowed to leave to the United States.

PA activities are barred from Jerusalem by Israel. As a result, the PA has a minister for Jerusalem affairs and a Jerusalem governor located in al-Ram, just on the other side of Israel’s security barrier.

Israeli delegation cancels visit to Bahrain after outcry
“When y’all get yourselves figured out, we’ll come back.”
[Ynet] Parliament, street protests expressed strong opposition to Israeli attendance at Global Entrepreneurship Network congress; security, difficulty in obtaining visas cited as reason for cancellation.

A delegation from Israel that was due to attend a conference in Bahrain this week has pulled out due to security concerns, the organizers said on Sunday, after Bahrainis held an extensive campaign against the visit.

A spokeswoman for Israel's Economy Ministry said a planned visit to Bahrain this week by Israel's Economy Minister Eli Cohen had been "delayed because of political issues."

Israel and the Gulf Arab countries are in the midst of a diplomatic push aimed at forging an alliance against their common enemy Iran. Their efforts have become increasingly public after years of mostly covert contact due to strong opposition to Israeli rule over the Paleostinians.

The group of around 30 Israeli business executives and government officials was scheduled to participate in a congress organized by the U.S.- based Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) in Bahrain on April 15-18.

This prompted an outcry in Bahrain, with parliament joining calls on social media for the visit to be cancelled and some minor street protests held in Manama.

"While we advised the Israeli delegation they would be welcome, they decided this morning not to come due to security concerns and a wish not to cause disruption for the other 180 nations participating," Jonathan Ortmans, GEN president, said in a statement.

A source close to the matter told Rooters that three Israeli speakers had cancelled because they were unable to obtain visas while the rest of the delegation had "decided not to go."

The Bahraini government said the delegation had been invited at the sole initiative of the Global Entrepreneurship Network.

"Our responsibility is to ensure a safe and supportive environment for the attending delegations," the government said in a statement.

Last week a group of Bahraini lawyers tried unsuccessfully to get a court to stop immigration authorities from issuing visas to the delegation, while parliament condemned the visit.

"Bahrain's parliament announces that the people of Bahrain reject any Israeli presence on its territory and its lands and any decision allowing this presence is unacceptable," politicians said in a statement.

Israel has formal diplomatic relations with only two Arab states, neighboring Egypt and Jordan.

But an Israeli cabinet minister visited Abu Dhabi's Grand Mosque last year and fellow Gulf state Oman hosted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a surprise trip, the first time an Israeli leader had visited the Sultanate in 22 years.

SpaceX will assist NASA's first-ever mission to redirect an asteroid
[ENGADGET] NASA has chosen SpaceX to help out on its first-ever attempt to deflect an asteroid. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) will blast off on a Falcon 9 rocket in June 2021 from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,. Its mission: To smash a satellite into the Didymos asteroid's small moon in a bid to knock it off its orbit. What sounds like the plot of a Michael Bay movie could turn out to be NASA's first line of defense against Earth-bound asteroids.

This is batting practice. But the stakes are still high: Failure could derail NASA's so-called "kinectic impactor technique," success will provide the crucial data that will inform its deployment against an actual asteroid on a collision course with Earth.

NASA plans to intercept Didymos when it's within 11 million kilometres (7 million miles) of our planet -- in comparison, the moon is 240,000 miles and the sun is 93 million miles away. According to the DART website, the probe won't reach its target until October 2022, upon which it will slam into Didymos' moon at a speed of nearly 13,500 mph (6 kilometers per second).

The total cost for the mission is expected at around $69 million including the launch service, which NASA's Launch Services Program at Kennedy Space Center in Florida will manage. Fresh off the back of its successful Falcon Heavy launch and triple landing, SpaceX's involvement in DART sees its relationship with NASA evolving beyond its commercial payloads and resupply missions to the ISS. As usual, Elon Musk shared his reaction in a tweet: "Thanks on behalf of the SpaceX team. We ♥️♥️♥️ NASA!"

Sudan’s new military ruler vows to ‘uproot’ Bashir regime
[DAWN] Sudan’s second new military leader in as many days vowed on Saturday to ’uproot’ deposed president Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
’s regime and release protesters, in a bid to placate demonstrators demanding civilian rule.

"I announce the restructuring of state institutions according to the law and pledge to fight corruption and uproot the regime and its symbols," General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said, a day after he was sworn in to head Sudan’s new ruling military council.

He also ordered the release of all prisoners locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
by special emergency courts and the immediate lifting of a night-time curfew imposed by the council earlier this week.

Career soldier Burhan took the helm of Sudan’s transitional military council on Friday when his predecessor General Awad Ibn Ouf ‐ a close aide of ousted veteran president Bashir ‐ quit after little more than 24 hours in power.

Burhan also pledged on Saturday that individuals involved in the killing of protesters would face justice.

His initial announcements indicated he wanted to show the tens of thousands of protesters on the streets that he is not part of the regime’s old guard and was genuinely committed to reform.

The new leader also on Saturday accepted the resignation of the head of the feared National Intelligence and Security Service, Salah Abdallah Mohammed Salih ‐ widely known as Salih Ghosh ‐ the military council announced.

Salih Ghosh had overseen a sweeping crackdown led by NISS agents against protesters taking part in four months of mass demonstrations that led to the toppling of Bashir in a palace coup by the army on Thursday.

Dozens of protesters were killed and thousands of activists, opposition leaders and journalists tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
The police said that 16 people had been killed in live fire in Khartoum alone over the previous two days as NISS agents led a desperate last stand for Bashir before the army intervened.

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) gunnies published a video on messaging app Telegram on Sunday night appearing to depict the execution of Sunni bully boyz and village chiefs accused of passing on information about jihadist activities to security forces.

In the 21-minute propaganda film, which features scenes of alleged recent fighting in eastern Diyala province and an explosives workshop, the gunnies warn Sunni members of the Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitia and local officials, known as mukhtars, not to collaborate with Iraqi security forces.

"Stop killing the Mujahedeen [holy warriors] and do not get involved in a fight doomed to defeat," one murderous Moslem says before executing a captive named as Hameed Rakan, an alleged Sunni fighter.

Another man named as Mohammed Abdullah, who they claim is the mukhtar of the village of Big Bahiza in Diyala, is also beheaded.

At least seven captives are executed in the graphic film, in which the gunnies pledge continued allegiance to ISIS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...the head of ISIS, or what remains of it, and a veteran of the Abu Graib jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us. So far he has been killed at least four times, though not yet by a stake through the heart...
It is unclear when and where precisely the footage was captured.

ISIS remnants continue to operate in several mountainous and desert regions of Iraq despite their territorial defeat in 2017.

The Hamrin Mountains, 160 kilometers north of Baghdad, straddle the northern provinces of Saladin, Diyala and Kirkuk. They have become a hotbed for the new insurgency developing in Iraq.

On Sunday, Iraqi counterterrorism forces killed the ISIS group’s "military governor" in the northern Hamrin Mountains and three of his aides in an operation backed by intelligence services and the US-led coalition, officials said.

"Based on info from the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, the Counter Terrorism Service targeted and eliminates the so-called Hamrin Mountains military governor of ISIS (ISIS) and his three aides," read a tweet by Yahya Rasul, spokesperson for the Iraqi Security Media Cell, late Sunday.

"The operation was supported by the Iraqi Army Aviation and aircraft from our Coalition partners."

Two brigades of the elite Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Forces (ICTS) launched an operation last week against ISIS remnants operating along the mountain range in the north of the country following a green light from Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi.

The headquarters of ISIS propaganda newspaper al-Nabaa was targeted on the first day of the offensive.

ISIS gunnies are exploiting security gaps opened up between Kurdish Peshmerga lines and areas controlled by the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF).

In the wake of the Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum, the Iraqi government launched an offensive against the Peshmerga, forcing it to withdraw from the territories considered disputed between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The no man’s land between the rival armies has left ungoverned spaces where holy warriors have been allowed to regroup.

group more than five years ago, may still be alive.

New Zealand revealed Monday that it had dispatched a special forces unit to Syria to search for nurse Louisa Akavi who was kidnapped by the Islamic State group more than five years ago.

Details of the kidnapping had been kept under wraps until the International Committee of the Red Thingy appealed on Sunday for news about 62-year-old Akavi and two Syrian drivers kidnapped with her in October 2013.

They were in a Red Thingy convoy delivering supplies to medical facilities in Idlib, northwest Syria, when gunnies stopped the vehicles and kidnapped seven people. Four were released the next day.

New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said information about the kidnapping had not been previously released for fear that any publicity would place them at greater risk.

But he said it was believed Akavi was still held by IS and there were ongoing operations to locate her which included the deployment of a small multi-agency team based in Iraq.

"This has involved members of the NZDF (New Zealand defense force) drawn from the Special Operations Force, and personnel have visited Syria from time to time as required," Peters said.

"This non-combat team was specifically focused on locating Louisa and identifying opportunities to recover her."

The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

has reported the Red Thingy has reason to believe she is alive, because at least two people described seeing her in December at a clinic in Sousa, one of the final villages to be held by IS jihadists.

Some of the witnesses said they saw her performing medical duties at clinics and hospitals under IS control, indicating that she was no longer held in a cell and was able to use her nursing skills to win a modicum of freedom.

US military is ready for war with Venezuela: commander
[ALMASDARNEWS] The U.S. military is ready to attack Venezuela by the end of the year, U.S. Southern Commander Admiral Craig S. Faller said earlier this week.

According to Adm. Faller, the U.S. military is "on the balls of our feet" as his forces await instructions from U.S. President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
"President Trump is determined not to see Venezuela fall under the sway of foreign powers," Faller said.

In an interview with Foreign Policy, Adm. Faller criticized China for backing the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
"China came out publicly, a state front man, implying the blackouts were attributable to U.S. cyberattacks," Faller claimed, adding "that is just such a blatant lie. The blackouts are attributed to Maduro’s inept leadership, corruption, inattention to his people, and lack of concern for any humanity."

"I think the biggest threat to democracy and the way of life around the world is the trend that we see in China,’ Faller said.

He would then claim that the situation in Venezuela could soon turn into another Syria if Maduro is still in power.

"The crisis in Venezuela could approach that degree by the end of this year if Maduro still remains in power; it is that bad," he added.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Islamic State forces of Evil carried out the ambush near the Bir ’Ali area in the al-Mayadeen Desert of Deir Ezzor.

The source said at least ten Liwaa al-Quds fighters were killed as a result of the ambush by the Islamic State terrorists.

This latest ambush by the Islamic State marks the second time in less than a week that a pro-government convoy has been attacked by the terrorist group in eastern Syria.

Since they lost almost all of their territory in eastern and central Syria, the Islamic State has relied on their sleeper cells to carry out attacks against the Syrian military and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Both the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and SDF are currently working to clear the last areas under the Islamic State control.

Russia prepares to unveil new S-500 system
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Armed Forces will soon begin receiving a number of the newest air defence systems, a top Aerospace Forces officer said.

Speaking to the official armed forces newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, Aerospace Forces Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Yuri Grekhov disclosed that the development of the S-500, the successor to the S-300 and S-400 air defence systems ‐ has reached its final stage, as has the development of a number of radar systems.

He also disclosed that the Armed Forces will soon begin receiving the S-350 systems as well.

The S-350 is tasked with "defence of administrative-political centres, most important objects and regions of the country, armed forces groups, from massive air strikes, including tactical and operative-tactical ballistic missiles," Grekhov said, adding that the system has already passed the state’s testing.

"Every weapon system I mentioned is unique in its own way and is designed to solve a wide spectrum of tasks to ensure reliable aerospace defence of our country," Grekhov said.

According to Grekhov, all the weapon systems are built from Russian-made components and feature maximum automatization of all processes in conjunction with ease of use and maintenance.

The S-500, the S-350 and the new radars feature high mobility and are able to deploy to and function in unprepared positions, he said.

When asked about the percentage of cutting-edge systems in the Russian military, Grekhov said he estimates it makes up about 70 percent, adding that several more Russian air defence regiments will switch to the S-400 this year. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
90 percent of systems used by the Moscow Region and Central Economic Region air defences are modern.

While the S-500’s specifications remain classified, the system is reportedly able to destroy targets up to 600 kilometres away; it is also believed to be able to track and simultaneously strike up to 10 ballistic targets moving at speeds up to 7 km/s (approximately Mach 20).

New group of displaced persons transferred from Rukban to Homs in Syria
[Rudaw] A new batch of displaced people who were being sheltered at Rukban Camp in Jordan near the Iraq-Syria border arrived in eastern Homs on Saturday, state-run media and a humanitarian organization confirmed.

The displaced persons, including mostly women, children, and the elderly, according to SANA, were transported via the al-Jalighem route to the Homs countryside.

The Syrian Arab Army assisted in the move, and SANA reported that the displaced persons will receive temporary residence after their biometric data is recorded and they are screened. Al Jazeera reported that Russia assisted with the transfer.

SARC reported the convoy included 2,254 people who will live in "makeshift shelters in Homs" and the SARC will "provide more humanitarian services to alleviate their suffering."

Russia called for the United States to leave al-Rukban Camp on April 7.

The camp on the strategic tri-border region has sheltered some 50,000 Syrians during the conflict with the Islamic State

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on April 7 that over the past 24 hours 1,700 people had left the camp.

The United States says it will leave 200 forces at its nearby At Tanf garrison, where it trains tribal forces to fight ISIS.

The UN estimates around 400,000 people have been killed during the Syrian conflict. Half of all Syrians have been displaced at one time or another during the conflict.

Gaza factions said weighing resumption of balloon launches, nighttime border clashes

According to the Jerusalem-based daily, the Paleostinians spoke with an Egyptian security delegation mediating between Gazoo’s Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, rulers and Israel, which promised to press Jerusalem to honor its end of the understandings.

Back To Normal Along The Gaza Border: IDF Releases The Reinforcements
[Jpost] After several weeks of calm in Israel’s South, the IDF has ordered the additional troops deployed along the Gazoo border last month to stand down.

"In accordance with the ongoing assessment, it was decided to release the increased forces in the Southern Command for ongoing operations and training to improve their readiness," the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement given to The Jerusalem Post, adding that "the IDF continues to be highly prepared and will act quickly according to need."

The army deployed three infantry brigades and an artillery unit to enhance the Southern Command after a long-range rocket attack on central Israel destroyed a family home in March. The leave of all combat units assigned to the command was also canceled and reservists from several units were called up.

The rocket attack led to another round of violence between Israel and Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,.

And everyone could use a little time off — they’ve been going flat out for a bit, as far as I can tell.

are preparing to hold a summit, and it may happen as early as next week, according to media reports. It would be their first-ever meeting.

A source told the Yonhap news agency on Monday that Putin is expected to make a trip to Russia’s Far East, which borders North Korea, towards the end of the month, when Putin will visit a forum in Beijing.

"Chances are fairly high that a summit between Russia and North Korea could take place around that time," the source told Yonhap. On or around April 24 is being floated as a possible date for the summit between the two leaders.

A second source said there are signs that North Korea is making preparations for a summit.
