POTUS speech leaves Democrats befuddled, in ruins, with question marks
[Wash Times] The president opened by celebrating Black History Month. Lady Democrats wore white.

Donald Trump delivered the most finely crafted speech of his political life Tuesday night in what will go down as one of the best speeches delivered to a joint session of Congress in the past two decades.

He hit stirring emotional high notes. And he laid out his vision for his presidency.

Mr. Trump stole the issue of affordable health care from Democrats. He unabashedly owned the fight against illegal immigration.

"Obamacare is collapsing -- and we must act decisively to protect all Americans," he said. "Action is not a choice -- it is a necessity."

In other words, Democrats led by President Obama swindled poor Americans into this disastrous program with their usual host of lies and false promises and now these good people are stranded. But Mr. Trump and Republicans are not going to leave these innocent Americans to dig themselves out of the mess Democrats put them in.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Moral Outrage Is Self-Serving, Say Psychologists
It seems like some people are working hard to understand what really motivates people. Way more at link, of course.

I wonder if mirror cells work on imagined and written situations as well as viewed situations.

And to prove that I am still able to learn, this time I will make sure I'm not standing between TW and this article! ;-)

When people publicly rage about perceived injustices that don't affect them personally, we tend to assume this expression is rooted in altruism--a "disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others." But new research suggests that professing such third-party concern--what social scientists refer to as "moral outrage"--is often a function of self-interest, wielded to assuage feelings of personal culpability for societal harms or reinforce (to the self and others) one's own status as a Very Good Person.

Outrage expressed "on behalf of the victim of [a perceived] moral violation" is often thought of as "a prosocial emotion" rooted in "a desire to restore justice by fighting on behalf of the victimized," explain Bowdoin psychology professor Zachary Rothschild and University of Southern Mississippi psychology professor Lucas A. Keefer in the latest edition of Motivation and Emotion. Yet this conventional construction--moral outrage as the purview of the especially righteous--is "called into question" by research on guilt, they say.

#3  my pop psychology geiger counter says people get morally outraged on causes when easy binaries are presented. It makes them feel better about the insoluble problems in their own life.

eg: young man's mother has a brain operation that leaves her dependent and partially paralysed, and brain injured for the rest of her life. She is just aware enough to have a partial conversation (and not qualify for state care) but severely disabled and very taxing.

The young man cannot solve this problem, it's now his burden for life. So he gets involved in the retarded left fighting the social injustice of the world, for comradeship, for easy answers, for the illusion that he can beat unfairness, for a place to fit in when his own life is badly broken and cannot be fixed.

Is February 28, 2017, 'The Night the Democratic Party Died'?
The Democratic Party members watching that speech looked like a party of the living dead. They didn't know how to react. They didn't know if they were Americans. They didn't know who they were.

When the speech was over -- after there was no longer a dry eye in the house from the introduction of the widow of the Navy SEAL -- they left the room faster than fans of the losing team after the Super Bowl, only in this case they left so stunned you had to wonder if they would ever win the game again or even compete.

The Democrats -- the silly ladies dressed in white and all the others -- bet the house that Trump would make a fool of himself and Donald cut the legs out from under them. And when you bet the house and lose, you go home bankrupt. And without a home to go to.

We are in a new era. I'm 95% excited but 5% blue about what is happening -- not because I have even an iota of regret about leaving liberalism, especially now. But because, as Trump himself said the other day, we need a two-party system and I strongly suspect, even with the unlimited pockets of George Soros, the Democratic Party, at least as we know it, is dying. All those crazy protests at town halls and the mass demonstrations of women racing around in vagina hats are the death throes of a movement with nothing to say.

Cognitive offloading: How the Internet is increasingly taking over human memory
[Science Daily] Our increasing reliance on the Internet and the ease of access to the vast resource available online is affecting our thought processes for problem solving, recall and learning. In a new article, researchers have found that 'cognitive offloading', or the tendency to rely on things like the Internet as an aide-mémoire, increases after each use.

We might think that memory is something that happens in the head but increasingly it is becoming something that happens with the help of agents outside the head. Benjamin Storm, Sean Stone & Aaron Benjamin conducted experiments to determine our likelihood to reach for a computer or smartphone to answer questions.

#2  In the pre-print society that was the function of 'old' people. They were the memory storage of the community and thus much valued. The term 'elders' had a bit more esteem attached to it than today.

Given the abysmal state of and education system which pushes Marxist mush at all levels, don't expect any change in 'memory' retention in a 'memory' hole world.

Krauthammer: ‘This Was Without A Doubt The Best Speech' Trump Has Given [VIDEO]
[Daily Caller] Fox News’ Charles Krauthammer praised President Trump following his Tuesday address before a special joint session of Congress.

"This was without a doubt the best speech he ever gave," Krauthammer stated. "In fact, this should have been his inaugural address, a version of it."

"It would have had actually an effect on the launch of his presidency and would have vastly reduced the hysteria that has emerged across the country from the left," he continued.

#3  of importance to the WOT Trump kept the phrase 'Radical Islamic Terrorism' in his speech. He also acknowledged Muslim allies in the conflict w ISIS (although he didn't acknowledge the other Islamic terrorist groups.)

here is extract from the NYTimes transcript

Our obligation is to serve, protect and defend the citizens of the United States. We are also taking strong measures to protect our nation from radical Islamic terrorism.

(APPLAUSE)

According to data provided by the Department of Justice, the vast majority of individuals convicted of terrorism and terrorism-related offenses since 9/11 came here from outside of our country. We have seen the attacks at home, from Boston to San Bernardino to the Pentagon and, yes, even the World Trade Center. We have seen the attacks in France, in Belgium, in Germany and all over the world.

It is not compassionate, but reckless to allow uncontrolled entry from places where proper vetting cannot occur.

(APPLAUSE)

Those given the high honor of admission to the United States should support this country and love its people and its values. We cannot allow a beachhead of terrorism to form inside America, and we cannot allow our nation to become a sanctuary for extremists.

(APPLAUSE) That is why my administration has been working on improved vetting procedures, and we will shortly take new steps to keep our nation safe, and to keep those out who will do us harm.

(APPLAUSE)

As promised, I directed the Department of Defense to develop a plan to demolish and destroy ISIS, a network of lawless savages that have slaughtered Muslims and Christians, and men, women and children of all faiths and all beliefs. We will work with our allies, including our friends and allies in the Muslim world, to extinguish this vile enemy from our planet.

De Blasio Admits to Helping Friends Doing Business With City Agencies
[Free Beacon] New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio admitted Monday to drawing the attention of city agencies to certain issues on behalf of community members who need help with business.

De Blasio made the comment during an interview with NY 1, his first since being questioned Friday by federal prosecutors on his campaign fundraising practices, the New York Post reported. He downplayed the meeting with prosecutors over potential corruption charges, saying it went "fine."

During the interview, de Blasio discussed the circumstances surrounding the Buildings Department lifting a partial vacate order at a Hasidic school in 2014. Media reports suggested over the weekend that de Blasio got the order lifted to help Brooklyn Rabbi Moishe Indig, a friend of the mayor's who raised money for him.

De Blasio would not discuss specifics about his involvement in the situation; however, he did admit to placing phone calls for those who want help with city business.

Academy Awards attendees arse smooch convicted Chicago felon.
[Free Beacon] The man known as "Gary from Chicago" who stole the show Sunday night at the Academy Awards served 22 years in prison for attempted rape and other crimes.

Gary Alan Coe and his fiancee Vickie Vines were part of the group of unsuspecting tourists who Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel invited inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood during the ceremony.

Coe, 59, a native of the South Shore of Chicago, introduced himself as "Gary from Chicago" while wearing a "Hollywood" sweatshirt and holding his fiancee's purse, Page Six reported. He kissed the hands of several celebrities sitting in the front row and Denzel Washington even pretended to marry him and Vines with Kimmel standing right there.

Wife of Navy SEAL Ryan Owens applauded for more than 2 minutes during Trump speech
General Mattis confirms recent Yemen mission 'a success.'
[Independent] In the most emotional moment during his speech to Congress on Tuesday, President Trump recognized the widow of Navy SEAL William "Ryan" Owens, provoking a standing ovation that lasted longer than two minutes.

"Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity," Trump said as the chamber stood up and applauded Carryn Owens, whose husband was the first American combat death during the Trump administration.

Carryn Owens, who was sitting next to Ivanka Trump and other guests on the balcony of the House chamber, fought back back tears, exhaled, looked above and mouthed "I love you, baby." Tears streaming down her face as the applause continued, Carryn Owens eventually stood up, clasped her hands in apparent prayer, raised her head again and mouthed "I love you."

Owens was killed in Yemen on Jan. 29 in a raid Trump has said was "highly successful."

Paul Ryan Receives Steve Bannon's Support to Salvage Border Tax Plan
[Breitbart] Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has won the support of President Donald Trump’s senior adviser Steve Bannon in his attempt to pass his border adjustment tax plan, according to a report from Bloomberg:

Trump’s top strategist once described Ryan as "the enemy," but now the former Breitbart News chief is the speaker’s best chance to win approval for his border-adjusted tax, which Republicans currently say has almost no hope of clearing the Senate. In a handful of White House meetings, Ryan found that Bannon was perhaps the most enthusiastic backer of the border-adjustment plan, according to a senior administration official and a person familiar with the sessions.

A vigorous endorsement from Donald Trump could help save the border-adjustment plan, which is running into strong opposition from the energy industry and retailers. The retailers took the unusual step of launching an advertising campaign on the tax issue aimed at viewers of Fox News’ Fox and Friends and Saturday Night Live, TV programs Trump is known to watch.

Ryan has also spoken positively of Bannon since the election, telling PBS Newshour on Feb 8, "We’re different kinds of conservatives, that we can safely say, I think. But we’re serving a purpose, which is to get this agenda passed, and on that agenda that we’ve rolled out, that we ran on, on that we agree. So I see a person that I have a common cause and purpose with."

#2  This is all part of the Free Trade mantra from doctrinaire libertarians who insist on dealing with the rest of the world as though they play by the same rules. There belief system is that Free trade is the one and only driver of increasing wealth.

This is true in the abstract BUT we don't live in the abstract. What this does is increases the total wealth while ruining the equitable distribution of that wealth, concentrating more and more in the globalist .5%. see NAFTA.

#3  When Duncan Hunter Sr. was running in the Republican presidential primary in 2008 he advocated what he called the mirror policy. If a country charges a tariff of a certain percentage of the price of our products, we should charge that same percentage tariff on their products. Too bad, nobody paid much attention to Hunter. McCain won the nomination and we all know what happened after that.

The Grand Turk
Largest Coup Trial Opens in Turkey with 330 Suspects
[AlAhram] The biggest trial of suspects accused of involvement in last year's failed coup opened in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Tuesday in a courtroom specially built to hold more than 1,500 people.

Some 330 suspects are being put on trial in Sincan outside the capital Ankara, and if convicted, they face multiple life sentences over their alleged links to the attempted overthrow of President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
last July.

Over 240 of those named in the indictment are already in jug, state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
Anadolu reported.

The suspects, many of them from the Polatli artillery and missile school command in Ankara, have been charged with murder or attempted murder.

They also stand accused of attempting to remove the Turkish republic's government and parliament, or trying to prevent those institutions from conducting their work.

The case is being heard at Sincan prison where there was heavy security in place, with a water cannon truck on site and a drone flying overhead as families arrived for the hearing.

The courtroom -- which has space for 1,558 people -- was packed, with security forces surrounding the suspects as they testified.

On the night of July 15, hundreds of people stood outside the Polatli command base while thousands erupted into the streets in the district to stop the coup bid.

- 'If needed, use weapons' -
The first suspect, a military cadet called Abdulkadir Kahraman, told the court that on the night of the coup, troops were informed by their commander that there had been a terror attack and were given ammunition.

Other suspects gave similar statements, including Arif Ozan Demir who told the court the commander told them there had been an attack and that they should "be prepared".

Some of the suspects added that a senior army officer told them to be prepared to use their weapons, Anadolu reported.

"The lieutenant-colonel said, 'There is an attack outside, we will ensure the people's security. We trained you for this day. If needed, use weapons'," suspect Ahmet Tamur told the court.

The cadet added that some members of the public had attacked the soldiers while others helped protect them.

The suspects' family members outside the prison told AFP they wanted justice.

Samet Oral urged the president to "watch our situation, to see how we are," adding: "We only ask for justice."

Sunduz Baykara said that some of the suspects were innocent of the charges and yet remained in jug.

"Even though our children didn't shoot, even though they have been beaten up by the people, it has been now eight months they stand behind bars."

- Biggest legal process -
Ankara has blamed the failed putsch on Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
-- who lives in self-imposed exile in the United States -- and his movement.

Turkey has denounced the movement as a terrorist organization and the suspects on trial at Sincan are also accused of belonging to an armed terror group.

Chief of General Staff General Hulusi Akar is one of the complainants in the case along with Gendarmerie Forces Commander General Yasar Guler.

The hearing is one of several cases that have opened across the country this month, with 47 people going on trial in the western city of Mugla on charges of attempting to assassinate Erdogan.

Until now, the largest had been in the Aegean city of Izmir where 270 suspects went on trial late last month, among them Gulen, being tried in absentia.

Following the failed putsch, Ankara declared a state of emergency and began a widespread crackdown, placing more than 43,000 people in pre-trial detention.

The state of emergency remains in place as the trials get underway in the biggest legal process in the country's history.

The first verdicts were handed down to a colonel and major last month when they were sentenced to life in jail in the northeastern city of Erzurum for violating the constitution.

Erdogan Says Paper to Pay 'Price' over Controversial Report

[AnNahar] President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
on Tuesday warned that a Turkish newspaper would pay a "price" after a contentious report over alleged tensions between his government and the army.

Istanbul prosecutors launched an investigation into the Hurriyet front page story on Saturday which suggested that the army was not satisfied with the recent actions by the government.

The story listed seven grievances including the lifting of a historic ban on female officers wearing the Islamic headscarf in the officially secular country.

"Let me put it very clearly, what's done here, the headline they have used is insolent," Erdogan told news hounds at an Istanbul airport before leaving for Pakistain on an official visit.

Erdogan said nobody had the right to set the army against the government and warned: "Whoever tries to set us against one another will pay a price."

"No offense but I don't find such an approach forgivable at a time when we need unity, fraternity and solidarity more than ever," he added.

Erdogan said he discussed the issue with Chief of Staff General Hulusi Akar on Monday.

The Hurriyet newspaper, the flagship daily of Dogan Media Group -- the Turkish media giant which owns television channels Kanal D and CNN-Turk -- is a mainstream daily but houses pro-government columnists as well.

4 teenage girls detained in France in suspected attack plots
[Ynet] Three teenage girls and an 18-year-old woman were detained in different parts of La Belle France Tuesday as suspects in attack plots, the Gay Paree prosecutor's office said.

The four teenagers are suspected of taking part in an online chat channel, called The Lionesses, through the Telegram instant messaging application, the office said.

Prosecutors allege they spoke of the possibility of preparing "violent actions."

Three of the detained teens are minors ages 14, 15 and 17. The fourth turned 18 in January, the office said.

Several French news outlets, citing unnamed judicial sources, reported the four teenagers were following the Telegram channel of Rachid Kassim, a French Islamic State

Nine Islamist militants 'neutralised' in Algeria: Ministry
"They're dead, Jim."
[AlAhram] The Algerian army "neutralised" nine Islamists in the North African country's restive eastern Kabylie region on Tuesday, seizing weapons and ammunition, the defence ministry said.

"An army detachment neutralised forces of Evil near Azzefoun," a coastal town 170 kilometres (105 miles) east of Algiers, a ministry statement said.

The authorities use the word "terrorist" to describe armed Islamists who have been active in the country since the early 1990s.

A security source told AFP the gunnies were rubbed out following a search near Azzefoun.

Soldiers also seized ammunition, two Kalashnikov assault rifles, a sniper rifle, a shotgun and five hunting rifles, the source said.

Algeria's army has stepped up operations in its mountainous regions in recent months, killing at least 30 armed Islamists since the beginning of the year.

Earlier this month, the army said it had killed 14 Islamists during a major operation in the Bouira region, 125 kilometres (77 miles) southeast of the capital.

Algerians had hoped that a 2005 peace and reconciliation charter would turn the page on a 1991-2002 civil war that cost 200,000 lives.

But Islamist groups remain active in the south and east, largely targeting security forces.

On Sunday evening, the police foiled a suicide kaboom targeting a cop shoppe in Constantine that was claimed by the Islamic State

Sydney Jewish Museum evacuated after bomb threat
The fad is spreading.
[IsraelTimes] The Sydney Jewish Museum was evacuated following a bomb threat received by its staff on Tuesday.

Staff at the neighboring building housing the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, Jewish Communal Appeal and United Israel Appeal also were evacuated. Police and security officials searched the buildings and allowed staff to reenter two and a half hours later.

The Board of Deputies canceled its monthly plenum following the decision allowing the staff to leave early.

The museum, which is dedicated to documenting and teaching the history and lessons of the Holocaust, announced the launch of its new photo exhibition last week.

Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff told JTA that the building was evacuated by police as a “precaution.”

“The NSW Police secured the area, the all-clear was subsequently given and we were assured there was no risk to the facility or the community,” he said. “We wish to express our gratitude to the NSW Police for their swift response.”

Less than a day earlier, 28 Jewish community centers and Jewish schools, and the San Francisco office of the Anti-Defamation League were evacuated after receiving bomb threats in the fifth wave of such threats since the beginning of the year.
CNN adds the following about the five waves of bomb threats in America:
Law enforcement officials believe many of the threatening calls to Jewish commuinity centers have originated overseas.

They may be loved in principle, but they're so good at making themselves unwelcome wherever they go.
[AnNahar] A senior Paleostinian official has been denied entry to Egypt, prompting a Paleostinian delegation to withdraw in protest from a counter-terrorism conference he was to attend, officials said Tuesday.

Jibril Rajoub, a senior member of Paleostinian president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

' Fatah party, told AFP he was "surprised by the Egyptian security decision to ban me from entering Egypt."

Rajoub, who also heads the Paleostinian Football Association, said the Egyptian minister of youth and sports had been waiting at the airport to meet him.

An Egyptian airport official said Rajoub was rejected "on the instruction of one of the Egyptian security services," without giving further details.

Paleostinian Justice Minister Ali Abu Diak, who was scheduled to participate with Rajoub in the conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, announced that he was withdrawing in protest, a Paleostinian official said.

Eleven Afghan Police Killed in ‘Insider Attack’
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] An Afghan policeman linked to the Taliban rubbed out 11 of his colleagues at a checkpoint in the southern province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, officials said Tuesday, in the latest so-called "insider attack".

The incident occurred late Monday while the coppers were sleeping in their barracks in the lovely provincial capital Lashkar Gah, as the Taliban escalate a deadly winter campaign of violence.

Bloodied corpses of the coppers were strewn around the checkpoint, many of them shot from close range, witnesses said, in a setback for Afghan forces before what is expected to be another fierce spring fighting season.

"A policeman affiliated to the Taliban shot 11 of his colleagues, killing all of them," a provincial official told AFP, declining to be named.

"He then fled the area, taking all the ammunition and firearms with him," he said, adding that police had launched a search for the Taliban infiltrator.

The Boost government hospital in Lashkar Gah had received the bodies of the 11 coppers, a health official told AFP.

Taliban holy warriors, who control vast swathes of the opium-ravaged province, grabbed credit for the killings.

Thai army, insurgents agree to create "safety zone"
[AFP] Thai army and Muslim insurgent negotiators agreed on Tuesday to create a "safety zone" in southern Thailand. Talks held in Kuala Lumpur have staggered on for years, undercut by bombs, ambushes and assassinations in the far South and a decade of political instability in Bangkok.

The army has been talking with Mara Patani, an umbrella group that says it is a political wing representing a shadowy network of fighters. The Thai side doubts the Mara's ability to get rebels to put down their guns. For their part, the militants are not convinced Thailand's military government will reduce its massive security presence across the south or devolve significant political power.

But in a confidence-building measure both sides on Tuesday "approved and adopted a general framework for the implementation of a safety zone in one of five proposed districts," the Mara said in a statement.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha welcomed the development but warned that continued militant attacks undermining the safety zone would damage the peace process. He said, "If the safety zone cannot happen, it will prove the potential of the people we are talking to."

Maxine Waters boycotting Trump's address to Congress
[THEHILL] Rep. Comrade Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) says she will skip President Trump’s address to Congress Tuesday night, according to ABC News.

Waters's office confirmed to The Hill that she will not attend the speech, but denied that she has encouraged other members to skip as well.

The Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, Democrat similarly refused to attend Trump’s inauguration in January, saying she "never contemplated even going near any of those activities." Nearly 70 other Democratic politicians also skipped the ceremony.

"I don’t honor him, I don’t respect him and I don’t want to be involved with him," Waters said at the time.

Waters has positioned herself as a staunch opponent of the president. She said earlier this month that her "greatest desire is to lead [Trump] right into impeachment."

Holder: Obama is 'ready to roll'
[POLITICO] Barack Obama
I inhaled. That was the point...
is getting closer to making his public reappearance in politics, his friend and former Attorney General Eric Inaction Jackson Holder
... aka Mister Fast and Furious...
said on Tuesday.
The land of the eternal campaign...
Holder said he’s been talking to the former president about ways -- including fundraising and interacting with state politicians -- that could help the new National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which Obama asked Holder to chair last year.

"It’s coming. He’s coming," Holder said, speaking to news hounds at a briefing for the new group. "And he’s ready to roll."

Throughout, Holder said, Obama "will be a more visible part of the effort."

Holder also predicted that the usual pattern of the party in the White House losing state legislative seats in off-year elections would hold next year, but "I expect we’ll see that on steroids with President Trump."

The NDRC is looking to be an intensified central force for Democrats to tackle their disadvantage in gerrymandering. The mission is to direct resources into winning targeted state elections, push ballot initiatives for nonpartisan district-drawing commissions and wage legal challenges to existing maps. The hope is that this would put Democrats in a stronger position in state houses, but also in the U.S. House of Representatives, if districts are drawn that more accurately represent the distribution of the popular vote, citing statistics that showed Republicans winning 49 percent of the vote in those elections but getting 55 percent of the seats in the 2016 elections.

House Democrat says he will refuse to shake Trump's hand at joint session
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] President Trump will not receive a handshake from at least one senior House Democrat, the politician announced hours before Trump's first speech before a joint session of Congress.

"The president needs to work with all people and therefore I will listen to what he has to say today, but I will not greet him and shake his hand," New York Rep. Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said during a brief speech on the House floor.

Engel, like several other politicians, has a long history of taking a seat on the aisle during State of the Union addresses; the positioning ensures that they are seen on television greeting the president as he enters and exits the joint session. But Engel intends the snub as a a rebuke of Trump's attacks on the media, lack of support for investigating the Russia-linked cyberattacks against the Democratic party during the 2016 elections, and other policy disagreements, he said.

McAuliffe Vetoes Bill to Investigate Virginia Voter Rolls With More Registered Than Eligible Voters
[FREEBEACON] Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe vetoed a bill that would require investigations of jurisdictions in the state whose voter rolls contain more registered voters than citizens who are eligible to vote.

The bill, first introduced by Republican state Sen. Mark D. Obenshain, was prompted by a report that shed light on eight Virginia counties that had more registered voters on their voter rolls than eligible voters.

Obenshain's bill would require "the local electoral boards to direct the general registrars to investigate the list of persons voting at an election whenever the number of persons voting at any election in a county or city exceeds the number of persons registered to vote in that county or city," according to its summary. "The Department of Elections is required to provide certain data to any general registrar conducting such an investigation for the registrar's use during the investigation. The local electoral boards are required to make reports of the findings to the State Board. These reports are public documents."

McAuliffe, who vetoed the bill on Friday, claimed that the bill "would increase the administrative burden on local election officials" in his veto statement.

"By requiring 133 individual general registrars to conduct an investigation of voters under undefined standards, this bill raises serious constitutional questions," McAuliffe said in a statement. "It could expose eligible and properly registered Virginians to the risk of improper disenfranchisement."

Abadi: Terrorists outside Iraq within Our Reach
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Iraq Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi stressed that the Iraqi forces can strike the gunnies outside the country’s border, saying that a mortal combat will be dealt to the terrorist group of ISIS.

"Terrorists outside Iraq are within our reach," Abadi said, "There is a fast military advance in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, and the whole world recognizes this success."

"Had not Iraq almost defeated ISIS, the terrorist group would have reached the Gulf countries," Abadi added, "We want to build strong ties with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
on the basis of mutual ties."

Abadi pointed out that Iraq is a strong country which plays a strategic role in the region.

Clashes Resume in Ain Al-Hilweh as Ceasefire Collapses
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Gunfight resumed in the south Leb Paleostinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh Tuesday after the already fragile ceasefire collapsed.

Al-Manar correspondent in Sidon reported that festivities renewed at 10:00 a.m. between Fatah group and myrmidon bad boys.

Three people were maimed the festivities, including a boy whose wounds were serious, according to our correspondent.

Sub-machine guns and projectiles were used in the festivities which erupted in Fawqani neighborhood, our correspondent said.

Sporadic fire on Tuesday reached neighborhoods outside the camp, including Saineeq neighborhood in Sidon.

UNRWA (United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Relief and Works Agency) schools and clinics did not open their doors for the second day Tuesday, with a large number of people were reported fleeing the festivities in the camp.

Warring Paleostinian factions are expected to hold a meeting Tuesday to continue talks which began one day earlier over the situation in the camp.

They met at the Paleostinian Embassy Monday, with Ambassador Ashraf Dabbour and Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al-Ahmad both attending.

The factions discussed ways to maintain the fragile cease-fire that was brokered Sunday after days of festivities erupted last week between the Fatah Movement and forces of Evil militants.

Turkey Blasts Austria’s ‘Irresponsible’ Referendum Stance
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

has slammed Austria’s "double standard" and "irresponsible" approach to potential campaigning by President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
in the EU member state ahead of April’s referendum.

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said Erdogan is "not welcome" to hold campaign events, adding that it would "increase friction" in Austria and prevent the integration of a 360,000-strong minority of Turkish origin.

"We do not accept those irresponsible comments that exceed their limits and the distorted mentality," Turkish foreign ministry front man Huseyin Muftuoglu said in a statement late on Monday.

Kurz’s comments are a "new example of a biased and double standard approach", he added.

Turkey will hold an April 16 referendum on changing the constitution to give Erdogan an executive presidency along the lines of that in La Belle France or in the United States.

The Turkish government says the changes would bring stability while opponents fear it would hugely boost Erdogan’s powers and drag Turkey into one-man rule.

province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the Arclight airstrike was carried out late on Monday night in Chaparhar district.

Provincial police front man Hazrat Hussain Mashraqiwal confirmed that the faceless myrmidons were targeted in Sangini area of Chaparhar late on Monday night.

He said a commander of the Taliban group was killed along with another Lion of Islam and at least three others were maimed.

Mashraqiwal further added that the Arclight airstrike did not incur any casualties to the local residents or security personnel.

Nangarhar has been among the relatively calm provinces since the fall of the Taliban regime but the anti-government armed bad boy groups have recently increased their insurgency activities in some remote districts during the recent years.

The US forces based in Afghanistan resumed their counter-terrorism operations last year under a broader role granted by the B.O. regime.

The operations were resumed amid concerns that the bad boy groups including ISIS loyalists are attempting to expand their activities and presence in this province.

The provincial officials are saying the Lions of Islam were killed as part of the ongoing Shaheen-25 operations.

The officials further added that nine Lions of Islam also sustained injuries during the operations being jointly conducted by the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in Haska Mina district.

According to the officials, the operations are being conducted with the support of close-air support and artillery units of the Afghan army.

Nangarhar is among the relatively calm provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed bad boy groups have recently increased to their insurgency activities in some remote districts of the province.

Both the Taliban snuffies and loyalists of ISIS terrorist group are occasionally conducting insurgency activities by staging coordinated attacks, roadside kaboomings and ambushes against the security forces and government officials.

The Shaheen-25 operations were launched nearly one month ago in response to the growing insurgency of the anti-government armed Lions of Islam in Haska Mina, Kot, Achin and some other remote districts.

South Korea closes biggest dog meat market ahead of 2018 Winter Olympics
[SCMP] The shutters have started coming down at South Korea’s biggest dog meat market as the country seeks to head off international criticism over its practice of killing dogs for human consumption before it hosts the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Moran market in Seongnam sells more than 80,000 dogs, dead or alive, every year and accounts for about a third of South Korea’s dog meat consumption, according to local media.

On Monday, officials and traders began removing butchery facilities and cages in which live animals are kept before they are slaughtered. The decision to close the market came after animal welfare campaigners highlighted the inhumane conditions in which the animals were kept and the methods used to kill them: electrocution, hanging and beating.

The smell and noise had also prompted complaints from nearby residents.

The market’s closure has met with opposition, however. South Korean media reported that a handful of the 22 dog meat sellers who initially agreed to the move last December now oppose it, and are demanding compensation to make up for the loss of business.

"Almost 80 per cent of our customers visit our shops to buy fresh dog meat, so what are they going to do if we cannot provide it for them? Is the government going to pay us?" Shin Seung-cheol, a Moran trader, told the Korea Herald.

(IS) group during a firefight at a government office Monday after a small bomb was set off nearby.

Witnesses described terrifying scenes as the attacker stormed into the building brandishing a dagger and began yelling at staff and starting fires. TV footage showed heavily armed police firing on the office through clouds of smoke.

But no one apart from the attacker was hurt in the incident in the city of Bandung on Java island, which started with a pressure cooker bomb exploding in a park before the shootout erupted in the office opposite.

Police said the attacker was a former terror convict from an IS-supporting network called Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which has been blamed for a series of recent attacks in Indonesia including an assault in Jakarta last year.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Moslem-majority country, has long struggled with Islamic militancy and hundreds of turbans from the Southeast Asian state have flocked to fight with IS, sparking fears that weakened Death Eater outfits could get a new lease of life.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Hundreds Of Non-Citizens Registered To Vote In Ohio, Investigation Finds
[DAILYCALLER] Hundreds of non-citizens are registered to vote in Ohio and some have even cast ballots, a state investigation of its voter rolls reveals.
Ah ha! So THAT'S how Trump won Ohio!
According to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, his office has identified a total of 821 non-citizens registered to vote in the Buckeye State since 2011 -- 126 of whom voted in at least one election.

"In light of the national discussion about illegal voting it is important to inform our discussions with facts," Husted said in a statement. "The fact is voter fraud happens, it is rare and when it happens, we hold people accountable."

Husted’s office has conducted reviews of Ohio’s Statewide Registered Voter Database (SWRVD) three times. The 821 non-citizens registered to vote and the 126 non-citizen voters represent the most recent total of the three reviews.

The secretary of state announced Monday that this year his office discovered 385 non-citizens registered to vote in Ohio, 82 of whom have cast at least one ballot. In 2013, Husted’s office uncovered 291 non-citizens registered to vote and found another 145 in 2015. Of those non-citizens registered to vote, the office found 17 had voted in 2013 and 27 voted in 2015.
Very good. Prosecute them, convict them, jail them, expel them -- the Justice Department won't get in your way anymore. While doing that, review the database for imaginary Ohioans, multiply registered Ohioans, and dead Ohioans, and after clearing them out of the database, go after those who put them there and voted in their names.

Sputnik News, quoting a local source, reported that the girl, putting on an boom belt, was on her way to blow herself up inside a girls-only school in Wahda district. Police sealed off the school’s vicinity, according to the source, who said that many IS-linked women had managed to melt within civilians though implicated in brutal abuses against Iraqi women over the past two years.

Since Iraqi government troops became in control of eastern Mosul late January, Islamic State fighters, who fled to strongholds in the west, waged occasional attacks on the liberated areas in the east, either by fighters crossing from the west via the Tigris River or by sending bomb-supplied drones. Militants, some security personnel and non-combatants were killed in those attacks. The assaults have stoked security officials’ concerns that IS might have left sleeper cells in the eastern region that could destabilize liberated districts.

Iraqi troops, starting a new offensive on western Mosul on February 19th, have recently pushed closer to central Mosul, where many strategic government facilities are located.

McConnell: Trump's State Dept. cuts 'probably' can't pass Senate
[THEHILL] Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that a budget that slashes State Department funding likely wouldn't clear the Senate.

Asked if a budget that cuts the agency’s funding by roughly a third could pass the upper chamber, McConnell told news hounds "probably not."

"When we get to funding the government, obviously it will be done on a bipartisan basis," he said.
Protecting the phony-baloney jobs is always a bipartisan job...
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration’s budget would cut the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development by roughly 37 percent.

Stressing that he was speaking for himself and not the caucus, McConnell added that the "diplomatic portion of the federal budget is very important."
"I'm not in favor of cutting what we call the 150 account by that amount," he said.

The 150 account includes international affairs funding.

Trump's first budget is coming under fire from several GOP politicians.

will ask Congress to cut the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) budget 24 percent, or nearly $2 billion, according to sources familiar with the budget plans.

The White House sent draft budget plans to agency heads Monday, detailing billions of dollars in cuts to a wide range of federal programs. Cuts to EPA and other agencies will fund a $54 billion increase in defense spending.

A source informed of the budget plans told E&E News Trump will push for a nearly $2 billion cut to EPA’s $8.1 billion budget. A source told Politico Trump also "proposed reducing EPA’s 15,000-strong workforce to 12,000, a level not seen since the mid-1980s."

"You’re going to have to make reductions," Myron Ebell, director of global warming and energy policy at the libertarian Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

"There’s going to have to be some serious thought here," said Ebell, who headed Trump’s EPA transition team. "They’re going to have to figure out to make these cuts."

Trump’s plan to cut EPA’ budget 24 percent mirrors recommendations given to him by the agency transition team. That plan advised cuts outside of state and tribal grants, which make up about 43 percent of EPA’s budget.

Two women in nerve agent attack on Kim Jong-nam charged with murder
[SCMP] Two women accused of assassinating Kim Jong-nam with a lethal nerve agent were Wednesday charged with murder.

Earlier, Malaysian Attorney General Mohammed Apandi Ali said that the two women -- Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong -- would face a mandatory death sentence if convicted.

The pair arrived at the isolated courthouse outside the capital in a police van, part of a convoy of 20 vehicles escorted by police outriders.

The van and the entrance to the building were secured by more than 100 heavily armed police wearing balaclavas and wielding automatic weapons.

The women entered the building wearing t-shirts, surrounded by a scrum of news hounds and police.

Hydrogen engine setback
Scientists reportedly say that the world’s only sample of metallic hydrogen, which was touted as potentially revolutionizing technology, has disappeared.
I looked in my sock drawer. Its not there.
Last month physicists at Harvard University achieved what they described as "the holy grail of high-pressure physics," when they created the first metallic hydrogen material.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
Science Alert reports that the sample has disappeared, much to the dismay of experts. The sample was stored at temperatures around -316 degrees Fahrenheit, the report said, noting that the metallic hydrogen was kept at high pressure between two diamonds in a vice-like device.

Earlier this month the vice failed when testing caused the diamonds to break, according to Science Alert, which says that scientists haven’t been able to find a trace of the metallic hydrogen.

"Basically, it’s disappeared," Isaac Silvera, Harvard’s Thomas D. Cabot Professor of the Natural Sciences, who led the research, told Science Alert. "It’s either someplace at room pressure, very small, or it just turned back into a gas. We don’t know."

#4  Hydrogen engines are just stupid as hell.

It takes bizzillions of megawatts to draw the hydrogen out of the atmosphere or water and store it or convert it to a "metal" in a controlled space at near zero Kelvin.

It will not clean up the atmosphere because you are burning fossil fuels at a record rate to provide energy for the conversion.

Most of the enviroweinies advocating these alternate fuels forget that fossil fuels are needed to create most of them...yes I am looking at you Ethanol.

Erdogan’s Aide: Remaining Outside EU Won’t ‘Be the End of the World’ for Turkey
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
but the EU membership is not vital to it and is not the most pressing concern for Ankara, since the bloc currently is not willing to let it join, Turkish chief presidential adviser Ilnur Cevik told Sputnik.
It's probably not vital to have the Porte in the EU, either.
"[Joining the EU] is not vital for us, but we do want it, but if we don’t get it is not going to be the end of the world," Cevik said.
After the Nexit and the Frexit and the Luxit and such there'll be lots of room.
The president’s adviser added that the future of the European Union was uncertain and a lot would depend on the outcome of 2017 elections in Germany, La Belle France and the Netherlands.
If there's not a Gerxit maybe they can argue over whether the Sultan or the Margrave has precedence.
"In the middle of all this we have the luxury of saying we can wait and see because they are not allowing us into in any case," Cevik said.
There's probably a word missing from that sentence. It might not make any sense with it in anyway.

Turkey Says Wants to Be Part of Raqqa Operation but Without Ucky Kurdish Involvement
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
said Tuesday Ankara wanted to work with its allies to capture the ISIS bastion of Raqa in Syria, but without the involvement of Syrian Kurdish militia.

"If our allies are really sincere, we tell them: We will act with you so long as we cleanse Raqa from ISIS and give it back to its original owners," Erdogan said at an Istanbul airport before leaving for Pakistain, referring to the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
ISIS group.

But he made clear The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
would not fight alongside Syrian Kurdish fighters, who are viewed by Ankara as "terrorists".

The Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its armed wing, the Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), are seen by Washington as the most effective force in the fight against ISIS but are condemned by Turkey.

Erdogan said Turkey clearly told Washington it would never cooperate with PYD or YPG.

"It is certainly not possible for us to agree with or act together with PYD or YPG," he said.

Last August, the Turkish army launched a unilateral military campaign inside Syria, backing opposition faceless myrmidons to clean its border from ISIS murderous Moslems as well as Syrian Kurdish militia.

Compared to the lightning advance at the onset of its "Euphrates Shield" operation, the Turkish army sustained increasing casualties to capture al-Bab.

The strategic town, just 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the Turkish border, was the Takkfiris’ last stronghold in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo.

On Friday, the Turkish military said together with Anakara-backed bully boyz it had completely taken al-Bab from Takfiris.

Erdogan, who met with Chief of Staff General Hulusi Akar on Monday, said al-Bab operation was "completed."

"But this doesn’t mean the process is over," he said, adding that if Ankara reached an agreement with coalition forces, steps would be taken in Raqa.

He said Turkey was also talking to Moscow because "our solidarity with Russia is also important."

Erdogan said Turkey’s Syria campaign had cost the Takfiri bully boyz a "very serious price," saying more than 3,000 murderous Moslems had been killed throughout the operation.

Iraq
Al-Sadr apologizes to PM Abadi over Wasit demos assault
[Iraq News] Influential Shia cleric and militia leader Muqtada al-Sadr apologized to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi Tuesday after demonstrators believed to be loyal to Sadr assaulted the premier’s convoy in Wasit.

Dozens of students at Wasit University protested Tuesday against a visit by al-Abadi to the campus and attacked his convoy, with police responding with air shots.

News reports said Abadi arrived to the southern province to run an ordinary cabinet meeting and made a visit to the university, where tens of students attacked his convoy and chanted anti-government slogans.

Alghad Press said the prime minister had to leave the campus from the backdoor, while his sentry shot fire in the air to scare the demonstrators away. It reported that 19 students were suffocated with tear gas fired by the troops.

NRT network said the protesters chanted a slogan which supporters of al-Sadr used during their demonstrations in Baghdad two weeks ago. The slogan calls for “totally uprooting” the government, accusing it of corruption.

myrmidons.

Anadolu Agency quoted a military officer saying the troops took over the Wadi Hajar district in the southern area of western Mosul. "Iraqi forces fought fierce battles with bully boyz holed up in Wadi Hajar, located in ISIS-held western Mosul," Colonel Ahmed al-Jubouri of the army’s Nineveh Operations Command told the Agency.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said Iraqi troops took control of Damerji village, south of Badush, northwest of Mosul.

The Iraqi government launched February 19th a major offensive to clear western Mosul from Islamic State myrmidons, having recaptured the eastern region late January.

Federal Police chief, Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, said in statements earlier on Tuesday that 929 Islamic State members were killed since operations began. According to Jawdat, 200 fighters were killed on Monday alone, adding that 84 booby-trapped vehicles and 3 drones were destroyed and brought down during battles.

Government troops have recently pushed closer to central Mosul, where many strategic government facilities are located. They had made remarkable gains retaking the city’s airport and a major military camp when troops began the campaign invading the region from the south.

The Iraqi migration ministry said Monday operations in western Mosul had so far forced 14.000 civilians to flee the region, bringing the total of people leaving Mosul since the start of operations in October at 235.000.

According to the local government officials, the incident took place late on Sunday night in the restive Shindand district.

Provincial governor’s front man Jilani Farhad confirmed the incident and said reports suggest at least two suicide bombers stormed into the compound of a rival group led by Mullah Rasool.

He said the festivities continued for at least half hour before the two suicide bombers were killed during the exchange of fire.

Farhad further added that reports indicate at least three Death Eaters loyal to Mullah Rasool were also killed during the clash.

Iraq
Iraq’s Kurdistan negotiates $3 billion oil pre-payment deals
[Iraq News] Iraq’s Kurdistan has agreed new deals to borrow $3 billion from trading houses and Russian state oil firm Rosneft that will be guaranteed by future oil sales to strengthen its fiscal position as the semi-autonomous region fights Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Kurdistan’s natural sources minister Ashti Hawrami told Rooters the new deals had been concluded in recent weeks. The region also negotiated grace periods of between 3 and 5 years for repaying the debt.

Trading houses have been pre-financing Kurdish oil exports for the past two years after the government in Erbil decided to start independent oil exports via The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

’s Mediterranean terminals. Rosneft said last week it would join them. .

Kurdistan says it needs to export oil independently as Baghdad has not paid Erbil its budget share just as the region needs money to fight Islamic State and host Syrian refugees.

Baghdad has said it would sue buyers of Kurdish oil, arguing that the central government was the only legal exporter. The new Baghdad government has softened its stance, however, as it cooperated with Erbil against Islamic State in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"This helps our economic independence although it is important to understand that this cannot be achieved just by oil revenues and higher oil prices. We also need to press on with our economic reforms," Hawrami said in an interview in London.

"We have learnt a lot from the oil price shock, the costs of fighting ISIS, and the burden of some 1.8 million refugees coming to our territory... Reform is a must ‐ we have a lot of debts to deal with."

He declined to name the trading houses but market sources have previously identified Vitol, Petraco, Glencore (GLEN.L) and Trafigura as buyers of Kurdish barrels. Last week, Glencore confirmed it had concluded deals for Kurdish oil. The other trading houses do not comment on their dealings with Kurdistan and Rosneft did not give any details on the size of the deal.

China, Russia veto U.N. sanctions against Syrian leadership
[UPI] China and Russia on Tuesday vetoed a U.N. sanctions resolution against Syrian leadership.

The U.N. Security Council draft resolution, written by the United States, Britannia and La Belle France, called for sanctions against 11 Syrian nationals and 10 entities connected to chemical attacks in Syria in 2014 and 2015.

"In terms of sanctions against the Syrian leadership, I think that now they are completely inappropriate. This would not help the negotiation process but would only interfere or undermine confidence," Russian President Vladimir Putin

The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
said after a meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. "Russia will not support any new sanctions in relation to Syria."

Putin added that he was pleased with the conclusion of talks in Astana, Kazakhstan, which arranged a cease-fire and monitoring protocols in Syria, but acknowledged that U.N.-brokered peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland

Russia's military involvement in Syria was instrumental in the survival of the Syrian government after six years of a civil war. Russian representatives are scheduled to meet Wednesday in Geneva with the High Negotiations Committee, the umbrella group of remaining Syrian anti-government groups.

Europe
Berlin criminalizes Islamic State-linked 'Fussilet' mosque activity, sends police to raid 24 sites
[DeutscheWelle] More than 400 coppers took part in raids linked to the mosque. Prosecutors have launched criminal investigations into the association's activity, which is suspected of being a meeting point for radical Islamists.

Berlin's office of the interior banned the mosque association known as "Fussilet 33" on Tuesday. The organization is suspected of being a meeting point for radical Islamists, prosecutors said.

Anis Amri, a Tunisian national who launched an attack on a Berlin Christmas market in December that left 12 people dead and dozens more injured, frequented the mosque, according to authorities.

Last week, authorities in Berlin jugged

" (IS) turban group in an anti-terror raid. Police said the men had visited the mosque operated by the association.

Police raided 24 locations across Berlin early Tuesday morning with more than 400 law enforcement officers participating in the operation, local authorities said in a tweet.

Authorities closed the mosque following raids last week. The mosque has been under surveillance since 2015 for its suspected links in recruitment activities. It had also raised donations to support terrorist attacks in Syria.

Counterterrorism measures
Banning the association means that the group is formally disbanded and can no longer rent mosques for their activities.

Germany has taken proactive measures to curb terrorist threats and tackle radicalization following the Berlin attack.

The measures include launching dozens of raids across the country and proposing legislation to detain foreign nationals suspected of Lion of Islam activity who have been denied residency, a precursor for deportation.

According to Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, more than 500 individuals have been classified as a potential threat in Germany, of which roughly half of them are non-German nationals.

Elderly Veteran Lays on Floor in Pain While Waiting at VA Hospital
[FREEBEACON] An elderly veteran lay on the floor in pain and resorted to using his bag of medication as a pillow while waiting at a Veterans Affairs medical center in Durham, North Carolina on Friday.

Stephen McMenamin, a former U.S. Marine who was seeking care, and his wife posted photos of the scene on Facebook and said a nurse at the VA center yelled at the veteran for laying on the floor, Atlanta's WSB-TV reported Monday night.

"My wife found it upsetting, so she took a couple pictures," McMenamin told the news station, describing how he witnessed another veteran on the ground using his bag of medication for a pillow after being denied a reclining chair.

The elderly patient told the nurse that he could not get off the floor, according to McMenamin.

"The nurse started yelling at him, telling him he can't do that. He's like, ’I can't get up and I won't get up. I will be here until you can see me. Can I please have a blanket?'" he said.

McMenamin's wife Hannah described in her Facebook post that multiple other veterans in wheelchairs had to wait hours to get care.

Iran Navy Test-fires Valfajr Torpedo on Final Day of Drills
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] The newest torpedo to join the Iranian Navy’s arsenal has been successfully test-fired as the force wraps up large-scale drills spanning over territorial and international waters.

Tuesday marked the last day of the final phase of the maneuvers codenamed Velayat 95, which have been underway since early February across the Strait of Hormuz, Sea of Oman and the northern part of the Indian Ocean.

Valfajr, as the torpedo has been named, was fired from the Navy’s Qadir submarine towards a surface vessel, destroying its target.

Similar simulated tasks of target location and destruction were performed by various other submarines dispatched to within 100 kilometers (62 miles) off the country’s southern coast.

Separately, anti-submarine helicopters of naval defense squadrons, which serve the Navy’s strategic operations, practiced patrolling missions, hitting and destroying sub-surface targets.

Ex-CIA agent gets partial pardon for kidnapping of terrorism suspect in Italy
[DeutscheWelle] Sabrina de Sousa was found guilty of unlawfully kidnapping imam Abu Omar in Milan. The Italian president took one year off her sentence in light of the fact that the US no longer practices "extraordinary rendition."

Former CIA officer Sabrina de Sousa had one year shaved off her prison sentence on Tuesday by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. De Sousa was set to be extradited to Italia from Portugal on Wednesday to serve time for her role in the kidnapping of a Moslem holy man off the streets of Milan.

The Portuguese-American de Sousa now faces a sentence of three years instead of four. The reduction was further significant because under Italian law she is now allowed to stay in detention outside prison, making it unclear if she would be able to stay in Portugal after all.

The case relates to the February 2003 kidnapping of imam Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr, also known as Abu Omar.
...a member of the Egyptian terror group al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya, he spent the 1990s in Bosnia before being kidnapped and transferred to Egypt for questioning in 2003. He was released from prison in 2007, and has been living without attracting much attention in Egypt ever since, though Italy convicted him in absentia of terorism in 2013 for acts committed before the CIA got hold of him...
The holy man was one of many suspected Islamists who was kidnapped, questioned and sometimes tortured on CIA "black sites" off of US soil in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks under the Bush administration's policy of "extraordinary rendition."Despite being wanted in Italia as well on terrorism charges, a court in Egypt where he was being held found his detention unlawful and freed him in 2007.

In 2016, the European Court of Human Rights ordered Rome to pay Nasr and his wife 115,000 euros ($127,000) in damages.

Dozens convicted over the abduction
De Sousa was locked away
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
at the Lisbon airport in October 2015 while visiting her mother. She is one of 26 US agents to be tried and convicted in absentia over the matter. She has consistently denied being involved and has repeatedly lost attempts to fight her extradition.

Italia was the first country to take US intelligence agents to courts over the kidnappings and interrogations that took place in the Bush era. The Italian officials who were tried over the Nasr incident had their convictions thrown out when the country's top court ruled that prosecuting them could reveal information sensitive to state security.

President Matarella said he decided to reduce her sentence largely because the program of extraordinary rendition had been suspended under President Barack Obama
I am the change that you seek...

Interesting timing, given the current American president.

The control tower first denied the Egyptian plane permission to land, but relented, Americans said, after a Navy E-2C communications plane radioed to the tower that the civilian airliner was running out of fuel and that the Defense Ministry had been informed.

When the Egyptian 737 pulled to a stop on the runway, several dozen Americans from the Army Delta Force clambered out of a C-141 transport plane that had just arrived and surrounded the civilian plane. Italian paramilitary carabinieri also quickly converged on the plane.

''Our intentions were to take the Palestinians off the 737, hustle them onto the C-141 and take off for the United States,'' an Administration official said. ''The Italian commander objected. We surrounded the plane, and then the Italians surrounded us.''

Australian Federal Police arrested the 42-year-old electrician during a raid at his home in the rural New South Wales town of Young following an 18-month investigation, Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin told news hounds in the nation’s capital, Canberra.

Haisem Zahab, an Australian-born citizen, is accused of researching and designing a laser warning device that could alert the Islamic State group to incoming guided weapons used by coalition forces in Syria and Iraq, Colvin said. He is also accused of researching, designing and modeling systems to assist the Lion of Islam group’s efforts to develop their own long-range guided missiles, Colvin said.
Al Ahram adds:
Zahab appeared in court on two foreign incursion charges punishable by life imprisonment. He was refused bail and will reappear on March 8.

Feinstein seeks to slow Gorsuch Supreme Court nomination
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Sen. Dianne Feinstein
...Dem Senator-for-Life from Caliphornica. She has been a politician since about the time she was weaned. Feinstein was the author of the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, and tried it a second time in 2012. Feinstein has chaired the Select Committee on Intelligence since 2009. At age 80, Feinstein is the oldest currently serving United States Senator....
, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Tuesday she’s lodged a number of requests for more information from Judge Neil Gorsuch before the panel considers his Supreme Court nomination.

Ms. Feinstein sent Judge Gorsuch a letter last Wednesday asking whether he played a role during his time in the Justice Department on ten high-profile cases, including Guantanamo Bay detainees, U.S. torture policy, partial birth abortion and warrantless wiretapping.

Judge Gorsuch was principal deputy associate attorney general from 2005 to 2006.

Mrs. Feinstein also asked Judge Gorsuch to list significant cases, policies and initiatives where he "assisted in the development and implementation." And she sent a separate letter asking about his involvement with the Republican National Lawyers Association and the association’s Judicial Confirmation Task Force.

Judge Gorsuch is expected to appear before the committee for his confirmation hearing on March 20.

Target shares plunge on weak sales outlook
[NYPOST] Target Corp. reported a steeper-than-expected decline in fourth-quarter same-store sales and said it expected sales to continue to fall this fiscal year, sending its shares tumbling 13 percent in premarket trading Tuesday.
I gotta go potty.
The company has struggled with declining sales as shoppers increasingly gravitate to online retailers such as Amazon.com Inc. and spend more on big-ticket purchases such as cars and home renovations rather than electronics, food and apparel.
It is at such a point that a wise retailer does not make it clear to half its customer base that they are unwelcome.
The big-box retailer’s net income slumped to $817 million, or $1.45 per share, in the fourth quarter ended Jan. 28, from $1.43 billion, or $2.32 per share, a year earlier.

Hitler Game Sent to Senators Because Trump is Fascist or Something [VIDEO]
Gamers who love playing esoteric card games are a pretty geeky bunch. They enjoy wrapping their brain cells around games which come with actual booklets to explain byzantine rules.
I know this because I’m married to one.

One card game is gaining a certain amount of notoriety because the game designers just sent a copy to all 100 U.S. Senators.

It’s called "Secret Hitler," a game that "models the rise of fascism in a democracy."

Here’s a brief explanation of how the game is played.

Thai monk caught at love motel with woman and drugs
[SCMP] A 35-year-old monk in northern Thailand was defrocked and then charged after being caught in a love motel room with a young woman and some speed pills on Valentine’s Day.

Soldiers and local officials inspecting nightspots and hotels for misbehaviour, saw a saffron robe and a monk’s bag left in a Honda car parked outside a motel room in tambon Teng Sanam of Muang district.

They knocked on the room door. It was opened by a man with a shaven head and wearing saffron pants. There was a 19-year-old girl in the room with him.

A search discovered six methamphetamine pills and straws used for taking drugs in the bathroom, an official said.

The man, identified as Wutthichai Promma, 35, was found to be a monk at a temple in Muang district of this province.

The girl admitted she and the monk went to the love motel to celebrate Valentine’s Day and to take drugs.

The man was ejected from the monkhood. Urine tests found the pair tested positive for illicit drug use. They were handed over to Muang district police for legal action.

Thai media reported that Mr Wutthichai admitted he had sneaked away from the temple to meet the girl and celebrate Valentine’s Day, but said it was the first time.

She said she had met him via the phone, and arranged to celebrate the day of love with him for the first time at the motel.
