New tactics of Russia, a serious strengthening of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the truth about the battles on the front line:
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KP] Voenkor Alexander Kots spoke about the new tactics of Russia, which made a breach in the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Role Played
YouGov, a research center close to the British government, published a poll “What do you think about the fact that the UK could supply fighter jets to Ukraine?” Such a probing of public opinion. And, judging by the answers, the majority of the inhabitants of Foggy Albion do not see anything wrong with these deliveries: A quarter of the population does not care at all, 50 percent either support the transfer of aircraft to Kyiv or do not mind.

We have been following the dramatic play “about the difficult relations between the USA and Germany” all last week. They depicted the battle of the titans: "You first, let's go tanks!" - "No you!". In fact, this is a homemade piece, played out for a large audience. Everything was predetermined from the beginning. And all these deliveries are formed according to the offensive plan in the spring-summer Ukrainian campaign. It is compiled, of course, not in Kyiv.

What will change at the front
In my opinion, in the line of deliveries of Western equipment to Ukraine, it is not tanks that should be more alarming, but the amount of artillery. This is a whole artillery corps - three brigades:

- Self-propelled installations "Paladin" - an excellent weapon,

- "Archer" is a little worse, but also serious,

- AS-30, "Caesar", which has already proven itself in battles.

Tanks probably add spice to all these deliveries.

What is known at this moment? It's absolutely right now:

- The United States will supply 31 Abrams to Ukraine,

- Germany promises 14 Leopards.

- Great Britain - 14 "Challenger-2"

- Poland says it wants to supply 14 Leopards.

Has not yet decided when to send, Portugal - four units, the Netherlands some amount, Norway - up to eight, Finland, Denmark.

It was announced that the first batch of "Leopards" will come to Ukraine in three months. But most likely these terms will be reduced.

Such an international, which is going to squeeze a tank fist in the area of the line of contact.

Dependence on the west
Let's proceed from the fact that we knocked out all Soviet equipment from Ukraine. She is experiencing shell hunger. We solve these problems through our military industry. But Kyiv does not have such an opportunity, so they are forced to switch to the "donations" of the West. But dependence on a NATO manufacturer may at some point be fatal. Nevertheless, the scale of deliveries cannot but strain. What to do with them?

The simplest answer is to strike even behind enemy lines until they crossed the Dnieper, and cut down the bridges connecting the two banks. But, as the last 11 months have shown, the enemy is not experiencing any particular logistical problems as a result of our strikes.

Yes, and all recent deliveries are more or less secretive by civilian transport, trucks.

What should be done to bring down these bridges? This can be done, for example, by strategic aviation. What needs to be done for strategic aviation to work over Ukraine? It is necessary to suppress air defense systems.

Save the gunners
But you need to calculate the option that they will still reach the line of contact. And how we will meet them there is also very important.

In the Persian Gulf during the 1990-1991 war, 23 Abrams were destroyed. During the first two years of the Iraqi war of 2003-2011, more than 100 vehicles were disabled. The Houthis destroyed about 45 Abrams from the Saudis.

The Abrams are not some wunderwaffe that will provide Ukraine with a bloodless advance through the territories controlled by the Russian army. But it is also impossible to treat these deliveries condescendingly. It's still a serious, high-tech weapon. Sooner or later we will have to face them. As with a huge amount of new artillery.

And this means that we need to improve counterbattery combat in two months. This is, of course, a difficult task. It is impossible to transfer already trained artillerymen and anti-tank divisions to the infantry. After all, it is they who will have to burn American, British, German and other equipment in 2-3 months. And we will simply have nowhere to take them from.

Replacements worked
We have now imposed our initiative on the enemy. We have several points at once where he feels completely uncomfortable.

Firstly, this is Zaporozhye. There are interesting events going on right now in the Orekhovo region. The enemy is forced to transfer reserves there, including, by the way, from the Donetsk direction. And at this time, taking advantage of this, an offensive is underway in the south-Donetsk direction - Ugledar. We have already caught on to the first houses, almost all the roads to supply it have been cut. Of the relatively safe ones, only one remained - the track to Kurakhovo.

But it is also under the fire control of our artillerymen, because we control most of the Maryinka and from there we see the supply routes. An operation is underway to capture Artemovsk, the enemy's largest defense center. To the north of it, fighting is going on in the direction of Seversk.

The Ukrainian troops do not have the opportunity to concentrate large forces in any one direction. They are forced to send quick reaction forces here and there. This is probably the same preparation for which castling was carried out in the command of the special military operation. I think that it was the former commander Sergei Surovikin who carried out the preparatory measures, after which he handed over the reins of government to the Chief of the General Staff Gerasimov, who is now responsible for everything - both successes and defeats, if any.

But perhaps this is the very expansion of the format of the special operation, along with the supply of tanks, which the Ministry of Defense told us about when it explained the reshuffle in command.

Progressive Promotion
Yes, in the course of this conflict, problems in our military machine were also revealed. But it's good that we know about them now. Someone says that "probably the Supreme Commander does not have the whole picture." Yes, and I know it for sure. People who are not young, but who have been living in our country for a long time, know perfectly well that it is useless to expect sharp personnel decisions from Putin.

And in general the expected decisions. Someone may and would like flying heads and torn shoulder straps. But this is not the manner of our president.

We have a list of what is missing. Understanding where what is needed - too. It is necessary to see how the industry and the leadership of the Ministry of Defense will cope with this.

Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: January 27th, 2023
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 23:03 The Russians began to storm Ugledar, and the battle for this settlement may determine the further course of the war in the south. Read more in the article Where the Russian Federation will introduce a new offensive .

22:47 Western countries in general have promised to provide Kiev with 321 heavy tanks, Ukrainian Ambassador to France Vadim Omelchenko said.

21:49 The Russians fired at several infrastructure facilities in Zaporozhye in the evening, a fire broke out on the territory of one of them. It is known about one victim, said the secretary of the City Council Anatoly Kurtev.

21:44 Zelensky said in an interview with Sky News that Ukraine needs an additional 300 to 500 tanks. According to him, he is very grateful to the United States and other Western countries for the decision to transfer tanks to Ukraine, but will only feel relieved when this equipment is on the battlefield.

21:38 During a rocket attack on January 26, Russia damaged five high-voltage substations in the Central, Southern and South-Western regions, Shmyhal said.

21:33 Putin aims to wage war against Ukraine for many years and expects that the new offensive of the Russian army, which may begin as early as February-March 2023, will allow the invaders to seize the initiative from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. More details in the material Protracted war and any losses .

20:32 Spain plans to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine by spring, said the country's Defense Minister Margarita Robles. According to her, the exact number of combat vehicles is not yet known, but all Leopard 2 A4 tanks will undergo maintenance before being sent. The minister clarified that it is not only about sending cars, but also about training crews and maintenance.

20:25 Zelensky said that the situation at the front, and in particular in the Donetsk region - near Bakhmut and Vuhledar, remains extremely acute: "The invaders are not just storming our positions - they are deliberately and methodically destroying these cities and villages around them. Artillery, aviation , missiles. The Russian army does not have a shortage of means of destruction. And it can only be stopped by force."

20:18 The Foreign Ministry summoned the Hungarian ambassador after Orban compared Ukraine with Afghanistan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said. According to him, the ambassador will be called "for a frank conversation," and Kyiv reserves the right to "take other response measures."

20:12 The EU plans to create a special prosecutor's office for Russian war crimes in Ukraine, writes Bloomberg. According to an anonymous source of the agency, the idea to create a body that will include prosecutors from Ukraine and other countries this week received wide support from EU members. The European Commission is already discussing with Eurojust the mandate of the proposed international structure and other issues.

20:08 Zelensky announced a "marathon of honesty" aimed at clearing the leadership of international Olympic structures "from hypocrisy and attempts to drag representatives of a terrorist state into world sports."

“You can’t help but be disappointed by the statements of the current head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach. I spoke with him many times and never heard how he is going to defend sports from war propaganda if he returns Russian athletes to international competitions. There is no neutrality when such a war is going on ... We will do everything for the world to protect sports from the political and any other influence of a terrorist state, which is simply inevitable if Russian athletes participate in competitions, and even more so in the Paris Olympics ... By the way, I invite Mr. Bach to Bakhmut so that he can see with his own eyes that neutrality does not exist," the president said in a video message tonight.

19:56 Russian special services are preparing another special operation to discredit the military-political leadership of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the campaign will be directed against Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Serhiy Shaptala, Head of the SBU Vasily Malyuk, Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak, Acting Head of the National Police Ivan Vyhovsky and others. The campaign will include the stuffing of fabricated materials in Ukrainian and international media.

The goal of the IPSO is to sow uncertainty about the defense capabilities of our state among Ukrainian citizens and international partners. This, according to the Russian intelligence services, should lead to political instability within the country and reduce confidence in Ukraine on the part of the international anti-Putin coalition.

19:15 In Ukraine, the fourth case of the use by Russia of the Kh-55 missile with a nuclear warhead simulator was recorded. More details in the material Trap for air defense .

19:13 The Russian Army is increasing the activity of using aviation in all directions, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced in the evening summary. Despite significant losses, in order to improve the tactical situation, the enemy continues offensive operations in the Bakhmut, Liman, Avdeevsky and Novopavlovsky directions. On Kupyansky, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson - it is defending.

According to the General Staff, since February 2, in Energodar, the occupiers have been creating a commission at the nuclear power plant to check two 750 kW power lines in order to plan restoration work and supply power for the transit of electricity from the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to the Russian Federation.

In the occupied village of Zhelezny Port, Skadovsky district, Kherson region, the Russian "administration" is conducting a census and confiscating from Ukrainian citizens businesses not re-registered under Russian law (boarding houses, cafes, restaurants).

18:54 German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius opposes providing Ukraine with German fighter jets: "I think that this is out of the question. Fighters are much more complex systems than battle tanks, and have a completely different flight range and firepower. There we would delve into measurements, against which I would now very much warn.

18:08 The invaders took 3.5 thousand prisoners from places of detention in the territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to the Crimea, where now the Wagnerites are agitating them to join PMCs. Most refuse to sign a contract, so the Russians have created unbearable conditions for them, according to the Center for National Resistance under the MTR of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

We are talking about prisoners who were convicted in Ukraine of criminal offenses and were in prisons before the start of a full-scale Russian invasion. In the meantime, the occupiers continue to keep Ukrainians suspected of disloyalty to the government "in the cellars". In the temporarily occupied territories, the Russians intend to open 27 correctional colonies - in this way the enemy is going to officially register the existing prisons and detention camps for Ukrainians.

17:57 The delivery of American Abrams tanks to Ukraine will take "many months", said White House National Security Speaker John Kirby. At the same time, he assured that the Biden administration "is not going to waste time" preparing and strengthening supply chains.

17:31 The National Guard announced that not the Azov Separate Special Forces Detachment, which became part of the National Guard in November 2014, but the Azov SOF unit, created in March 2022, became a separate brigade within the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

17:19 The government adopted a resolution banning officials from traveling abroad without good reason for the duration of the war, Shmyhal said.

17:06 In the Zaporozhye direction, there are signs of strengthening the grouping of Russian troops, said Yevgeny Yerin, spokesman for the Defense Forces of the Tauride direction: "The enemy in certain areas of the Zaporizhzhya direction is making some attempts at assault actions in order to test our defense for strength. And if possible, hopes to improve its position At the same time, all these attempts by the enemy failed - the enemy was thrown back to previous positions. "

17:01 The Spaniard, accused of sending letters with explosives, visited the websites RT and Sputnik, and also used the Russian social network VK. The court considered this as confirmation that the suspect wanted to force the country's authorities to refuse support for Ukraine, and sent him under arrest.

16:58 Sister of the head of the DPRK Kim Jong-un, deputy head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party Kim Ye-jong said that North Korea "will always be on the side of Russia, in the same trench with its army and people." She is also convinced that the Russian Federation "will burn to the ground the weapons that the United States and Western countries brag about," and that the United States, "by pumping up Ukraine with weapons, stimulates instability in the world."

16:55 The EU has extended sanctions against Russia for another six months, until July 31, 2023, the Council of Europe announced.

16:46 Orban said that the time when Russia could conquer Ukraine and install a pro-Russian government in the country is long gone, so the goal of the Russian Federation is to turn Ukraine into an uncontrollable ruin so that the West cannot claim it "as a prize." According to the Hungarian prime minister, the Russians have already succeeded in this, since now Ukraine, like Afghanistan, is a "no man's land."

Orban also believes that the direct participation of NATO troops in the war cannot be ruled out. In his opinion, if the Russian spring offensive is successful, NATO member countries should consider sending troops to Ukraine. The Hungarian prime minister also said that although Ukraine succeeds in war, it will not always be, because in wars, Russians are "traditionally" weaker at the beginning, but later they are "impossible to stop."

16:39 The world's first UAV strike companies are being formed in Ukraine. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the creation of shock companies was approved at a meeting of the Headquarters by Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny. Together with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the General Staff and the State Special Communications Service, within the framework of the Army of Drones project, the Ministry of Digital Transformation created the Coordination Headquarters - this is necessary to implement a number of key reforms and scale up the production of UAVs. The most professional servicemen have already been selected to lead the shock companies. Each of them will receive drones and ammunition, Starlink and other necessary equipment.

16:22 EU ambassadors, in addition to imposing price restrictions on Russian oil products, are also discussing lowering the price ceiling for Russian oil, Radio Liberty's Brussels correspondent Rikard Jozwiak said. According to him, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland are pushing for a cut from $60 to $40-50, claiming that Russia is still making $600 million a day selling oil.

3:45 pm Biden would like to visit Ukraine in the future, but now is not the right time for this, said John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the White House National Security Council. According to him, the presidents of the United States and Ukraine often speak on the phone.

15:13 Belgium will provide Ukraine with the largest military aid package to date for 92 million euros. It will include cars, portable anti-aircraft systems, small arms and light anti-tank weapons, said Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

14:48 Before switching to modern military aviation, in particular fighter jets, Ukraine needs to develop and build an airfield network. As the speaker of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ignat said, the relevant work has already begun. He added that airfields can be universal, that is, they can be used for civil and military aircraft: "There is already such a practice in the world. This could be another push for Ukraine to the civilized world. Ukrainians could start flights within the country."

14:43 Ukraine managed to return 106 civilians from Russian captivity, adviser to the head of the President's Office Daria Zarivna said in an interview with KyivPost. She recalled that according to international legal documents, Russia must return civilians as non-combatants without any conditions, without using them in the process of exchanging prisoners of war.

14:39 "Shaheed Catchers" are already in Ukraine and are protecting energy facilities from Russian drones, Mikhail Fedorov, head of the Ministry of Digital Development, said. Currently, six systems have been purchased to counter enemy drones. These are state-of-the-art defense technologies that protect US strategic facilities.
Interesting that the self-proclaimed defender of Christendom gladly adopts the trappings of Moslem jihad.
14:28 The Russians fired on the city of Chasov Yar in the Donetsk region in the morning - two people were killed, at least five were injured, said the head of the OVA Pavel Kirilenko. In addition, shelling of Avdiivka, Toretsk, Alexandropol and Bogoyavlenka has been recorded so far.

14:22 Roskomnadzor restricted access to the websites of the CIA and the FBI in Russia "for disseminating false information."

13:43 During a missile attack on January 26, the Russians fired Kh-47 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at targets in Kiev and Zaporozhye, which are launched from MiG-31K fighters, Air Force spokesman Yuri Ignat said. According to him, the enemy uses these missiles to strike at the most strategic targets for them: "This time, one of the objects in Zaporozhye and a critical infrastructure facility in Kyiv turned out to be such. Such was their strategic goal - to leave one district of Kyiv without electricity."

13:17 Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, confirmed that Russia is using missiles with a nuclear simulator. In particular, they either take it out or don't put it in, and instead of the nuclear part, a simulator is placed so that there is a correspondence in weight and this does not affect the aerodynamic qualities of the rocket.

"What is it used for? In order to disperse our air defense, it can also be used as a decoy. Let's say that the missiles fly in a pile - five pieces - of which there can be two X-55 and three X-101, they fly along the route In order to deplete, disperse, so that we spend missiles on them," Ignat explained.

12:39 Orban said that Hungary will veto any EU sanctions against Russia related to nuclear energy.

12:10 Putin is planning a new attack on Ukraine before the beginning of spring, writes Bloomberg, citing sources close to the Kremlin. The offensive could begin as early as February-March, even before Ukraine receives tanks from partners. According to sources, Putin is aware of the weaknesses of his military, but he is convinced that superior forces and Russia's readiness for heavy losses will allow him to win. Putin believes he cannot lose in what he sees as an "existential" conflict with the United States and its allies.

12:06 The first Ukrainian military arrived in Germany to be trained on the Marder infantry fighting vehicle, writes Spiegel. Their preparation should begin in the near future and will take approximately eight weeks.

11:58 The Russians are storming and trying to capture Vuhledar in the Donetsk region, but to no avail, spokesman for the Eastern Group of Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Sergey Cherevaty said: "For many months in a row, the Russian Armed Forces, using motorized rifle units and marines, have been trying to achieve significant success there, but are being seriously rebuffed they are retreating from our Defense Forces and with losses ... There are fierce battles there, the enemy is really trying to achieve intermediate success, but thanks to the efforts of our Defense Forces, he does not succeed, and he, to put it mildly, exaggerates his "achievements" in telegram channels.

11:39 During the rocket attack on January 26, the Russians again used the X-55 missile with a nuclear simulator, the so-called "special" warhead. According to the Defense Express profile publication, citing its sources, such a missile was destroyed on approach to Kyiv from the southeast direction, its fragments were found in the Boryspil area. For the first time, the use of the X-55 with a mass and size mock-up of a nuclear charge was reported on November 17.

Also, the publication's sources said that the Russians began to mask their X-101 missiles - to clean up the serial numbers on the body so that it was impossible to identify the date of manufacture. After all, the analysis of serial numbers allows us to assess the pace and order of use of these missiles. At the same time, the absence of a serial number on the body can only interfere with the rapid identification of debris, since all internal components and assemblies of the rocket also have their own serial numbers, and it is rather difficult to destroy them without a complete reassembly of the rocket in the factory.

11:12 A significant shortage of power remains in the energy system of Ukraine, Ukrenergo reported. The Russian attack on January 26 caused significant damage to several high-voltage network facilities. In addition, the power grid is still recovering from the previous series of enemy rocket attacks. As a result, electricity generation at operating power plants cannot fully cover consumption.

All oblenergos have been notified of daily consumption limits. Already now they are exceeded in ten regions, which is why emergency shutdowns are applied in Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporozhye, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Volyn, Lvov, Rivne regions. During the day, emergency shutdowns are also possible in other areas.

11:03 Russia is experiencing serious problems with commanders at the platoon or company level. In the advanced units of the Russian troops, about 40% of junior commanders are missing, Andrei Chernyak, a representative of the GUR MOU, said in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine. According to him, mobilized Russians are often sent to assault without command and proper interaction between groups. They may have minor tactical successes, but they die by the hundreds, and new "cannon fodder" is sent in their place.

Chernyak noted that there are problems with the leadership in the Russian army at higher levels: “We have already seen and continue to observe the frequent replacement of generals and commanders of various levels who have not been able to complete their tasks. Perhaps this is their last chance to rectify the situation and to at least partially achieve the goals. Therefore, according to our estimates, the personnel problems with the command staff of the Russians will only increase every day."

10:48 In the "DNR", the occupying authorities are launching a second mass filtering. According to the adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, Petr Andryushchenko, in the process of mass and actually forced passportization, the "DNR" launched the procedure of "personal identification" before obtaining a Russian passport. However, in Mariupol, absolutely all residents have already passed the filtration, which in essence is an identification, including what there is a corresponding "document" about. This new "identification" coincided with the start of the official work of the FSB of the Russian Federation in the region. Thus, according to Andryushchenko, this is just another purge of unreliable elements in the occupied territories.

10:13 The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggests that the conflict between Prigozhin and Girkin is a new area of competition for political influence in Russia that could benefit Putin. Analysts say Prigozhin and Girkin - both critics of SVO - are likely competing for influence and patronage among pro-war politicians frustrated with the course of the war.

Prigozhin is very visible in the Russian information space, and many military bloggers, in response to this skirmish, accused Girkin of lack of combat experience and cowardice. So Prigozhin could undermine Girkin's authority in order to gain influence in the nationalist space, while discrediting one of Putin's most notorious critics.

ISW suggests that Prigozhin may be trying to maximize his influence in order to avoid the fate of Girkin, who was ousted by the Kremlin after his fighters retreated from Slovyansk and after the downing of MH17 in July 2014.

09:51 The White House will carefully discuss the possibility of supplying Ukraine with F-16 fighters and does not exclude anything, Biden's security adviser John Finer said. According to him, Washington does not exclude the supply of "any specific weapons systems to Ukraine," and military assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine is provided "in accordance with their needs and the phases of the struggle of the Ukrainians."

09:44 British intelligence believes that Russian military sources may deliberately spread disinformation in order to create the impression that the Russian offensive is continuing. So, for the last six days, Russian Internet commentators have claimed that Russian troops have made significant progress, breaking through the defenses of Ukraine in two directions: in the Zaporozhye region near Orekhov and 100 km to the east, in the Donetsk region, near Vugledar.

At the same time, analysts note that Russian units probably did conduct local test attacks in the Orekhov and Vugledar area, but it is unlikely that they have achieved any significant success.

00:44 Attempts by the Kremlin propaganda to promote an alternative reality regarding the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine will not be successful, according to an EU statement released during a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.

"The Kremlin's propaganda and disinformation campaign will not be successful in spreading an illusory alternative reality. We repeat: it is Russia that illegally and unreasonably attacked Ukraine. It is Ukraine that is defending itself in the aggressive war of the Russian Federation, in full accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, contrary to Russia's false statements. Precisely Ukraine, not Russia, has shown a genuine interest in reaching an agreement on a just and sustainable peace that is fully consistent with international law and OSCE principles and commitments, including those enshrined in the Helsinki Final Act.

The statement emphasizes that the EU will continue to provide Ukraine with all necessary political, military, financial and humanitarian support, and will do so "for as long as necessary."

00:19 The situation has escalated significantly along the entire front line in the Donetsk region, Pavel Kirilenko, head of the OVA, said: "The situation has escalated significantly, from the south to the center of the region. The Bakhmut direction has been and remains the hottest in our country, however, now it is very hot in Avdiivka. We We are seeing an escalation along almost the entire front line - from the south and from the north."

According to him, due to the lack of success on the battlefield, the occupiers intensified shelling of frontline settlements in the Donetsk region: "The enemy is suffering significant losses in personnel and armored vehicles. Because of this, the Russians are again resorting to the use of scorched earth tactics." We are talking, in particular, about the districts of Avdiivka, Vugledar, Toretsk and Bakhmut.

By increasing military aid to Kyiv, the West fell into its own trap
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Irina Alksnis

[RIA] A few hours after official statements by the United States and European countries about the supply of Western tanks to Ukraine - German Leopards, American Abrams, British Challengers - Politico reported that the next step was already being discussed on the sidelines: providing Kiev with modern fighters.

Sources told reporters that the West is deliberately increasing military supplies to Kiev gradually, so as not to "cause a powerful reaction from Russia." One of the unnamed diplomats explained that "many countries in the West believe that if we supplied Ukraine with all the equipment they asked for from us at the first stage of the war, then there would be a strong reaction from Russia, including nuclear."

This means that, according to the West, Russia has at its disposal one and only tool for a "powerful reaction" - nuclear weapons. Since it is fatal, its use is refrained from - all over the world - for reasons of common sense. This is truly the last argument of kings, the use of which is reserved until a completely hopeless situation. Accordingly, the West's strategy towards Moscow is to boil the frog slowly, that is, to raise the degree of confrontation step by step, without giving it the feeling that this is the end and all that remains is to press the red button.

We must pay tribute, this is a very competent approach. But there is a problem: Russia is just as slowly cooking the West itself - and has achieved serious success in this process.

The scandals and squabbles within NATO that accompanied the decision to supply tanks to Kiev were not staged at all. There are enough forces in the West that realize how bad and dangerous the current development of events is for it. Only the phrase "German tanks will fight in Ukraine against the Russians" refers to such depths of national memory (both ours and Europeans) that, at the level of the subcortex, intelligibly conveys the qualitative changes that have taken place in the conflict.

But it's not just the tanks. Ukraine was supposed to become an ideal hybrid war for the West - and at some point it seemed that it even became one. Ukrainians are excellent soldiers who can be put to the last man. No pity. At the same time, it was assumed that they would fight on the old Soviet equipment, which were just mountains both in Ukraine itself and in a host of other countries, especially in Eastern Europe . NATO would be left to provide intelligence and modern means of communication, as well as, if necessary, replenishment with mercenaries and some financial injections.

According to the original plan, in Ukraine, Moscow was to overstrain in all respects - first, incurring huge losses during the hostilities, and then gaining control over the destroyed and devastated (both war and three decades of mismanagement) territories. Moreover, the farther to the west, the more anti-Russian the population is, it would demand to feed it and at the same time would launch a permanent sabotage war (also with the active, but mostly unofficial support of Europe and the United States).

The development of the SVO made adjustments to these plans. Its extremely unhurried move and some successes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the autumn offensive gave rise to confidence among the Western establishment that Russia could be inflicted a purely military defeat. And this idea was seized with both hands.

The West has bet everything on this outcome and is now dealing with the consequences of its decision.

He was forced to take Ukraine to the full content, because it did not have its own economy. Against the backdrop of trillion-dollar bubbles in world markets and a printing press at hand, this is not a very large cost, but we are still talking about many billions - such large-scale expenses were clearly not included in the original plans, and in a situation of a growing economic crisis, they can become sensitive.

Soviet military equipment and individual samples of the old foreign ones are over. The idea of supplying "Leopards", "Abrams" and other modern Western equipment is bad in every respect: and because it's expensive; and because one has to empty one's own reserves, often already visibly laid bare; and because it is not known whether this technique can adequately show itself against Russian troops and in the local climatic conditions (if not, this will be a strong blow to the reputation of manufacturers and, as a result, to their business prospects); and because the ability to quickly train qualified Ukrainian crews is questionable, which means that they will have to send their own "retirees" to Ukraine; and because the fig "proxy" sheet of the West's war against Russia will finally slip.

But now another, in the future, the biggest headache is becoming more and more acute: the West has begun to run out of Ukrainians. From all over Ukraine comes information about the deployment of the next wave of mobilization, and much more stringent than before, methods. The country's mobilization reserve is close to exhaustion. Experts unanimously believe that another 200-300 thousand people will probably be able to gather, but that's all. Absolutely everything.

This means that in a few months (by summer or autumn) the West will face a problem in full growth: it will simply have no one to fight with. And he will have to make a much more difficult decision than the current one with the Leopards and Abrams: either admit defeat by abandoning Ukraine, like Afghanistan a year and a half ago, or officially send his own armies to war with Russia.

The trouble is that the West cannot admit its failure and Moscow's victory without catastrophic consequences for itself.

We have repeatedly said, including at the highest state level, that for Russia the current confrontation is of an existential nature, the very existence of our country is at stake.

However, the West is in a similar position. His situation is much more complicated than just the destruction of the unipolar world or even the crisis of the global dollar system. The half-thousand-year-old system of Western dominance over the world has come close to its final exhaustion (primarily resource and economic). Half a thousand years of the West being in the status of the king of the mountain - the most developed, the richest, the most powerful, the most prosperous, the freest, in general, the very, very part of the planet. And all this is slipping through your fingers.

What will the West do to keep and prolong the usual status quo? There is a suspicion that everything.

He chose military victory over Russia as the instrument of his salvation. Now the West is rolling along the chosen track and is getting more and more nervous, because events are not unfolding the way they expected, planned and wanted. Soon he will have to answer the question of whether he is ready for a face-to-face meeting on the Ukrainian battlefield of the Wehrmacht, that is, excuse me, the Bundeswehr, and other NATO armed forces with the Russian army.

Russian Perspective: Operation to Denazify Ukraine: Operational Brief January 27th (updated)
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Kindly note that several entries in this article may have been removed because they included discussions of the grand strategic level.

[NewsFrontInfo] 23:17 The Russian Foreign Ministry, in the light of arms supplies to Ukraine, said that NATO is "fully involved" in the confrontation with Russia, this confrontation is on the rise.

22:27 As a result of the strike, the transportation of weapons and ammunition to the areas of hostilities, including those supplied by NATO countries, was also disrupted, the Russian Defense Ministry noted.

22:14 On January 26, the Russian Armed Forces launched a massive strike with missiles and UAVs on the energy system of Ukraine, all goals were achieved, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

21:42 An air alert was announced in the Poltava, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as well as in the parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions controlled by Ukraine.

21:41 Vuniversity"Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" was forbidden to speak Russian, including students who will communicate with each other. Such a resonant and, in our humble opinion, stupid statement was made by Gennady Zubko, a member of the University Supervisory Board.

According to him, the ban on speaking Russian will apply to teachers, students and administrative staff. He added that this will be spelled out in the internal regulations of NaUKMA, approved today at the 40th session of the Academic Conference of the University.

He also believes that the Russian language is “the aggressor state”.

For our part, we note that any local regulations cannot violate the constitution and laws of Ukraine, and therefore are not mandatory for use.

But the law is one thing, but the real punishment of students, up to expulsion, is quite another.

20:28 Do not intercept due to breakneck speed. Military expert on the Zircon hypersonic missile

The Zircon hypersonic missile flies along a programmed trajectory at breakneck speed, it is impossible to intercept it. About this channel"Go and see"said the candidate of military sciences Anatoly Matviychuk.

Earlier it was reported that the surface-based Zircon missile will be adopted by the Navy this year.

“It is impossible to intercept her because of the breakneck speed, plus she flies along a programmed trajectory, her car cannot “sag”, she flies as she wants,” he said.

According to him, the speed of the rocket is over Mach 20, the firing range is about a thousand kilometers.

“Biden said about it something like this: an ordinary missile, but we can’t shoot it down. That is the meaning of this missile,” he added.

19:39 “For what?!” - in the part of the Kherson region temporarily controlled by Kyiv, the military commissars dragged a man into the car by force, whom they themselves wounded during the arrest

Anothervideo, demonstrating cruelty and violence towards Ukrainian men - the action takes place in the village of Ingulets in the territory of the Kherson region temporarily controlled by Kyiv. Surrounded by several representatives of the military registration and enlistment office and wounded during the arrest, the man screams heart-rendingly, but he is still dragged by force into the car to be sent to be slaughtered.

“For what?!” - the man shouts in despair, but his exclamations are completely ignored by Ukrainian punishers.

The vehicle was carrying ammunition. The truck was spotted by a Zala reconnaissance drone.

18:01 LOOK: The Bundestag timed the day of the liberation of Auschwitz an event in memory of people of non-traditional orientation who died at the hands of the Nazis - media

The speeches of politicians on this topic were interspersed with performances by the artist-transvestite Georgette Dee. It is reported that the fact that Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army was not mentioned by the politicians who spoke.

17:40 “Bandera is our hero! It's time to fight, it's time to kill! Muscovites to knives, to knives!” —video.

This is Kyiv, 2013. An exhaustive video about the meaning and goals of denazification. Recommended for viewing by those who ask “what are we for?”.

17:23 The Ukrainian does not like that healthy men are not at the front, but are packing everyone in a row for "grave" -video.

17:06 DAY: Ukrainian militants wounded a civilian in Vuhledar, the man was urgently evacuated. The wounded person receives the necessary medical care. Today, fighting is going on for Vuhledar, Russian troops managed to gain a foothold near the city.

16:50 The Ukrainian channel "Resident" writes about the next attempts of Kyiv to shut up the Ukrainian society:

“Our source in the OP said that the General Staff is demanding that the SBU ban photographing military commissars who hand out subpoenas so as not to escalate the situation in society. Recently, public scandals have become more frequent, and the methods of mobilization are becoming more and more radical, due to the refusal of Ukrainians to receive summonses.”

16:37 Kharkiv partisans poisoned 40 militants of the 92nd and 30th brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine -a source.

In all chats of the 92nd brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, an audio message is actively spreading that “volunteers” arrived in one of the units, who fed the militants with dumplings ... As a result, 40 Nazis went to Bandera.

It is reported that the events took place on the border of the Kharkov region and the LPR.

The video sequence superimposed on the audio recording is illustrative in nature.

16:20 Obituaries of the Transcarpathian media over the past month, dedicated to the Zahisniks, who were mobilized from the settlements bordering Hungary. It draws attention to the fact that everyone has surnames atypical for Ukraine -a source.

Information in the piggy bank of the Hungarian government, which notes that the Kyiv regime graved hundreds of Transcarpathian Hungarians in the fighting.

15:55 Myroslava Berdnik recalls the bloody role that today's Ukrainian national heroes played in the Holocaust:

"In the photo on the left (bylink) to the right, the commander of the Corps of Sich Riflemen Konovalets, Taisiya Yuryeva and Ivan Yuryev are sitting in the car. Why am I posting this for Holocaust Remembrance Day? Because Ivan Yuriev during the Second World War was the deputy head of the Sonderkommando 10a - one of those who were engaged in the execution of civilians, mostly Jews. In the UNR, he was the chief of staff at Konovalets, in January 1919 - the commandant of Kyiv.

After the German invasion of the USSR, Sonderkommando 10a operated in the North Caucasus, shooting, in particular, the Jews of Mariupol, Taganrog, Rostov-on-Don, and Krasnodar. This Sonderkommando, whose deputy chief was Yuryev, for the first time used gas chambers, killing the pupils of the Yeysk orphanage - children of 8 nationalities. In total, they killed tens of thousands of people - Jews and non-Jews."

Yuryev's boss, team leader Kurt Christman, died in prison. He himself was luckier, escaping to Toronto, and died in 1970. His grave was included in the Virtual Necropolis of Ukrainian emigration by the Institute of National Memory.

15:52 The fact that Russia was not invited to the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Auschwitz by the Red Army is a humiliation. Any nation should be able to find ways to be grateful to those who saved it from destruction. About itdeclaredChief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar.

15:39 In Transcarpathia, citizens are already being mobilized in public transport. Men in military uniform without documents enter the bus and take future Ukrainian soldiers out. Thus, it becomes clear that everything is just beginning in Transcarpathia and the military commissars allow themselves a lot -video.

15:35 On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Volodin noted that it is important to remember the truth about those events and do everything so that the tragedy does not happen again.

“In Ukraine, in the Baltic states, in other European countries, the Nazis are raising their heads. Their accomplices are again trying to rewrite history, deny the Holocaust, cast doubt on the decisive role of the Soviet army in the victory over fascism, destroy monuments and graves of those who gave their lives for the freedom of Europe, ”said the speaker of the State Duma.

- Any attempts to reconsider Russia's contribution to the Great Victory actually means justifying the crimes of Nazism;

- The Soviet people put an end to the barbaric plans of the Nazis first of all;

- Forgetting the lessons of history leads to a repetition of terrible tragedies, evidence of this is the crimes of neo-Nazis in Ukraine.

14:55 A massive strike on targets in Ukraine - from the report of the Ministry of Defense.

- On January 26, the Russian army launched a massive missile attack with long-range precision weapons, air and sea-based, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles, at the facilities of the energy system that ensured the functioning of enterprises of the military-industrial complex and the transport system of Ukraine.

- The objectives of the massive strike have been achieved. All assigned objects are hit.

- As a result of the strike, the transportation of weapons and ammunition to the areas of hostilities, including those supplied by NATO countries, was disrupted. The work of the production facilities of enterprises for the repair and restoration of military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was disrupted.

The theater of the absurd continues in Ukraine. Thus, the SBU is considering statements by militants of the 92nd OMBR, who accuse Roman Esin, political officer of the brigade, of imposing "Muscovite traditions" - celebrating Christmas on January 7th. The militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine complain that they were forcibly forced to attend church services.

14:12 Vladimir Putin's statements:

- Any attempts to reconsider Russia's contribution to the Great Victory actually means justifying the crimes of Nazism;

- The Soviet people put an end to the barbaric plans of the Nazis first of all;

- Forgetting the lessons of history leads to a repetition of terrible tragedies, evidence of this is the crimes of neo-Nazis in Ukraine.

“Yesterday, all day long, the crest tried to break through the defenses of the 144th division. In total, the enemy launched 6 full-fledged attacks by company tactical groups with the support of combat vehicles. The offensives were organized, as before, from three sides. Our artillery did not stop firing even for a minute. For the first time in a long time, the daily BC was shot to zero.

The crest concentrated his main efforts on the direction of the 254th regiment. And here, it is possible, without exaggeration, to note the merits of its commander Metis. Personal courage and skillfully organized management allowed our fighters to repulse all attacks of superior enemy forces. Shooting battles were fought at a distance of 50-100 meters.

The result of yesterday was about a hundred absolutely meaningless corpses of Ukrainian soldiers, burning Humvees and pickup trucks. And our troops, having retained their positions, continue their systematic, although not as swift as we would like, advance forward.

Now the Ukrainians are transferring reinforcements from Artemovsk to Vuhledar. There are three thoughts on this matter:
- our men in Ugledar created great discomfort for the Armed Forces of Ukraine,

- the Ukrainian Armed Forces, apparently, really do not have enough people, they are increasingly transferring reinforcements from flank to flank,

- Artyomovsk, the Wagnerites, as I understand it, are putting pressure on them, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine are removing their people from there and transferring them to Ugledar. Kyiv understands that it would be better to surrender Artemovsk.

11:54 Assault on Ugledar and its environscontinues.

Having uncorked the Ugledarskoe direction, the RF Armed Forces go to the rear of the enemy grouping supporting Donetsk and the bridgehead in the area of the settlement. “So far, the enemy’s tactics are based on cutting off our advanced groups that have penetrated into his defenses as deeply as possible with artillery fire with periodic counterattacks,” he said.

According to Khodakovsky, the counterattacks are not of an intensive nature and are attempts by small groups to recapture any of the positions occupied by the RF Armed Forces.

11:22 Poland announced that it would transfer to Ukraine 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks (Polish modernization of the T-72M1) in addition to 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks. Poland has been announcing the transfer of the PT-91 Twardy since last summer.

An interesting point - the rocket goes at a minimum height. In most past videos, the flight altitude is noticeably higher. According to my sources, this time the raid was much more difficult, the flight paths were varied, even very unexpected.

In Dnepropetrovsk, a military warehouse at the Interpipe plant was hit, followed by detonation of ammunition. There were no civilian casualties. And in the near future, surprises are possible, while the guys are preparing them.

Interestingly, the mood of people in Ukraine began to change dramatically, especially after the savagery of forced mobilization. Rebellion under the conditions of a military dictatorship is certainly impossible, but moral decay in the rear is evident.

09:27 Ukrainian troops fired at the Kuibyshevsky and Kyiv districts of Donetsk, firing six shells of the "NATO" caliber of 155 millimeters,reported at the DPR office at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC).

"Fire was recorded from the armed formations of Ukraine in the direction: 08:55 (coincides with Moscow time) - the settlement of Tonenkoye - the city of Donetsk (Kuibyshevsky and Kyiv districts): 6 shells of 155 mm caliber were fired," the department's Telegram channel says.
08:43 Two civilians, including a child, were injured over the past day in the DPR as a result of shelling by Ukrainian troops, the territorial defense headquarters of the republic said on Friday.

“Over the past day, from 08:00 on January 26 to 08:00 on January 27, two civilians were injured as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (Armed Forces of Ukraine) on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the headquarters said in a telegram channel.
The headquarters stressed that there was a child among the victims.

What kind of 'Abrams' will the army of Ukraine receive
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Sergey Adamov and Alexander Umrikhin

[REGNUM] The Pentagon clarified: Kyiv will be given a more modern model of Abrams heavy tanks than the one that was mentioned earlier. True, Ukraine will still not get an important component - armor with depleted uranium. In addition, the experts asked the question: does the United States have a sufficient number of these more or less “advanced” Abrams modifications?

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF) will be given Abrams tanks in the M1A2 modification, and not the obsolete M1A1 models, as previously assumed, Deputy Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said . She added that for the sake of keeping state secrets, she would not "deep into further specifications" and specify the characteristics of the tanks, RIA Novosti notes .

Some details, however, were voiced by the sources of the publication Politico . Washington will not dare to supply the most modern tanks used by the US Army. Tanks delivered to Ukraine will be deprived of armor made from an alloy that includes depleted uranium. This technology is secret and is not exported even to the United States' closest allies.

The question actually arises about the modification of the Abrams M1A2, which was mentioned by the representative of the Pentagon. It is not clear if the US plans to fulfill its promise to supply thirty Abrams if the M1A2 vehicles are not in the warehouses of the US army. It was previously assumed that the M1A1 modification vehicles, which were previously decommissioned by the US troops, would be transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Now the US has to make a choice between withdrawing a batch of tanks from its active army and handing over to Ukraine tanks that were produced for other customers.

As noted by a REGNUM source familiar with the situation on the military equipment market, most likely the United States will agree with buyers of Abrams tanks to revise contracts for the supply of armored vehicles in favor of Ukraine.

"There are several options for how the States can do this. The authors of the article in Politico rightly note that the Abrams are manufactured at the General Dynamics plant in Ohio, which is now already loaded with orders, the source said. - The United States now has two active contracts for the supply of tanks: for Poland and for Taiwan. Some time ago, Poland ordered 250 tanks, the deliveries of which were supposed to start last year and end by 2025."

Accordingly, the source notes, the United States could agree with Poland that the timing of the deliveries would be revised, since General Dynamics would switch to the production of tanks for Ukraine.

“Either the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive tanks directly from the “Polish contract”. In this case, we can say that the United States plans to transfer to Ukraine vehicles in the M1A2 SEP v3 modification - this is the most modern version of those that are approved for export," the source said.

Previously, another "tank deal" had already been concluded between the United States and Poland. After Poland transferred a batch of 200 T-72 tanks to Ukraine, Washington undertook to reimburse the costs of the Polish army. The United States has committed itself to transfer 116 Abrams tanks in the M1A1 modification to Poland from their warehouses. In recent weeks, numerous videos have been published on the Web, which indicate large-scale transfers of American military equipment to Poland.

According to a REGNUM source , the Abrams M1A2 SEP v3 modification has a number of serious advantages that are crucial in a modern military conflict. We are talking about the installation of active protection systems (KAZ) on tanks, which allow you to protect the car from anti-tank systems (anti-tank missile systems).

"For the first time, this question was asked in the Israeli army," the source said. - Since the Israelis regularly conduct military operations in the Gaza Strip and beyond, they drew attention to the vulnerability of modern tanks from the fire of anti-tank missile systems. The Israeli company Rafael has developed a means of combating this threat: the Trophy active protection complex. It looks like this: Elta radar stations with four antennas are installed on the tank, which fix the approach of the rocket. These data make it possible to calculate its trajectory, after which high-explosive fragmentation ammunition is launched, which destroy the missile on approach .

During tests in the United States, this system showed almost 100% efficiency and was put into service, the source said. "Officially, the United States purchased hundreds of Trophy complexes, but I think that this figure can be significantly higher," the source believes.

"I want to note that in this situation, the Pentagon acted wisely, deciding to transfer to Ukraine precisely those vehicles that have a chance not only to survive, but also to significantly change the dynamics of a particular collision or a particular tactical operation."

At the same time, the expert noted that, despite all its advantages, KAZ Trophy also has a number of weaknesses. For example, an active defense system is not capable of repelling high-speed anti-tank missiles. For example, those that use Russian attack helicopters or domestic Chrysanthemum ATGMs.

During the conflict in Ukraine, both sides actively use various anti-tank missile systems. According to some reports, most tank losses during the conflict are the result of the use of precisely hand-held anti-tank weapons or artillery.

For example, the commander of the Vostok unit, Alexander Khodakovsky , reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are using urban areas to house crews of anti-tank missile systems that are hunting for armored vehicles.

The use of anti-tank warfare complexes acquires particular importance during battles in urban areas. Examples of conflicts in recent years (Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Yemen, Ukraine) show that armored vehicles, often used during the assault on urban areas, become the prey of anti-tank missiles. This circumstance led to the fact that a number of armies of the world were forced to "invent" ways of making handicraft additional armor for tanks, which increases the survivability of armored vehicles.

If the States really transfer Abrams tanks to Ukraine in the M1A2 SEP v3 modification, then the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be able to get a certain advantage through the use of modern technologies. Especially in urban battles. On the other hand, capturing one of these tanks as a trophy will allow us to study the technical solutions that are being actively implemented in the US Army today.

Spanish "Leopards" turned out to be "canned."

It became known how many German-made Leopard tanks Spain can send for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. From a statement by Defense Minister Margarita Robles , it follows that these will be some of the 53 combat vehicles that have been stored for more than ten years (the oldest vehicles in the Spanish tank arsenal). These Leopards are in need of a major overhaul, Robles admitted.

Judging by reports in the Spanish press, Madrid has undertaken to repair 53 units of these first generation tanks, which are based in Zaragoza. The process, the sources warn, will take months as parts for the equipment are unavailable and supply problems continue.

The La Razón publication clarified that Spain has a total of 347 Leopard battle tanks in two of their modifications. Of these, 108 arrived in the 90s from Germany. The remaining 239 are Leopardo 2E tanks, a Spanish modification of the German vehicle, more modern than what was transferred from Germany in the 1990s. But, as mentioned above, Spain is ready to share only old “canned food” with Kyiv.

“But these tanks can be repaired, and, most importantly, over time, Ukrainian personnel can be trained to use them correctly, which at the moment they simply cannot do,” political scientist Mark Bernardini told REGNUM . On Friday, the radio station Cadena SER, citing sources in the Spanish Ministry of Defense, said that a proposal was being considered to train 54 Ukrainian military personnel in the use of Leopard vehicles. According to the proposed plan, the training will last two and a half months in Spain on special simulators.

Long war. RAND
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Telegra.ph] In a new report, the RAND Corporation examines the course of the war in Ukraine. The report came out with the title "How to avoid a long war."

Rand in their report make a note that they consider the war in Ukraine only in the context of US interests in it.

The authors of the report consider 5 important, from their point of view, aspects that can determine the trajectory of the conflict:

• possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia

• possible escalation of the conflict between Russia and NATO

• territorial control

• duration

• a form of ending the war.

The use of nuclear weapons by Russia
On the first aspect of RAND, they could not say the essence. They just wrote that in the case of the use of nuclear weapons by the Russian Federation, the response from the West should be immediate.

Possible escalation of the conflict to NATO/RF
The second aspect is of great concern to RAND, as they believe that the involvement of NATO in the conflict (ie, apparently, the introduction of troops) may happen due to an unintentional incident. As it was after the fall of the Ukrainian rocket in Poland.

Territorial control
But with the third aspect (territorial control), everything is very ambiguous. While RAND acknowledges that it is in the interests of the United States to transfer the territories returned by Russia to Ukrainian control, they do understand that this provides absolutely no guarantees for the end of the conflict. From their point of view, if crests seize the former regions, then Russia will in any case react to this with a new round of escalation. If Ukraine accepts the borders of December 2022, then there are no guarantees that the Russian Federation will not go further to return the territories. At the same time, RAND emphasizes that the territories recently included by the Russian Federation into its composition should not be recognized at the international level as part of Russia.

RAND poinst out that no matter who controls the territories, this in any case leads to economic costs for the United States: if the crests conquer the territories, then the United States bears the costs in the form of funds to restore the economy of the Pig , and if the territories remain under the control of the Russian Federation, then the costs will go to military aid Khokhols. the longer the conflict, the more costs the United States moreover will incur.

Duration of the conflict
The duration of the conflict also plays an important role for the US. The main advantages of a long war for pendos include: the weakening of the Russian Federation, while it is occupied by Ukraine, the reduction of Europe's dependence on energy from Russia.

However, further conflict entails far more risks than benefits. These risks include:

War between Russia and NATO (highest risk);

New territorial acquisitions of Russia;

The US will be too busy with the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, therefore, it will be less able to control the rest of the world;

an increase in the cost of keeping crests;

The growth of ties between the Russian Federation and China;
slowdown in global economic growth;

Decrease in support for the war among the inhabitants of Ukraine due to mobilization and human losses.

Cessation of the war
RAND consider 3 scenarios for ending the war:

Absolute victory;

Truth;

Political settlements.

Absolute victory as an option to end the war, assuming that one of the parties will gain complete control over the enemy's territories and eliminate his political leadership, the authors of RAND do not consider as possible. This conclusion was made on the basis of the following factors:

For RF:
Public rhetoric of the Russian Federation: the transition from the rhetoric of the overthrow of the Kyiv regime to the rhetoric of non-repudiation of negotiations;
The absence of obvious successes at the front of the Russian Federation;
The total amount of resources spent;
The stability of the Zelensky regime and the refusal of the pro-Russian population of Ukraine to support the Russian Federation;

For Ukraine:

Front stagnation;
Lack of guarantees that the war will end if crests take all the territories returned to the Russian Federation;
Lack of opportunities to destroy the political regime in Moscow;
there is no guarantee that, as a result of the unlikely change of leader in the Russian Federation, the position of the new president on Ukraine will be aimed at ending the conflict.
Thus, RAND concludes that there is no intention on both sides for an absolute victory.

Truth
This option, according to the authors, does not imply a full-fledged solution to the conflict, since it will retain the general tension at the borders and will not resolve political contradictions. Nevertheless, this option will be bad for the Russian Federation, since it involves the creation of demilitarized zones and the payment of reparations.

Political settlement
A variant somewhat similar to the previous one, but involving the regulation of a much larger number of political issues. Despite the fact that the parties may not agree on the length of the borders and control over the territories, this option, according to RAND, will allow the parties to determine other areas of interest, as well as make Ukraine a non-bloc state, as was originally intended in the speech of the Russian authorities.

The authors of RAND see the option of a political settlement as the most beneficial for the United States, since it will allow the Pendos to maintain the status quo on the geopolitical map. However, it is less likely than the option of a truce, since it is not clear that the parties are striving for a final settlement of the conflict. RAND stress that the United States should put regular pressure on the Russian Federation and give Ukrainians as much help as necessary to force Russia into a peace treaty.

Obstacles to Ending the Conflict
In general, the main obstacle to the end of the conflict, according to RAND, is that the parties are optimistic in their favor about its further course. At the same time, for the United States, it would be more beneficial if both sides were optimistic about the end of the war, and not its escalation. An important factor here is that, unlike the Russian Federation, proposals for negotiations are not beneficial to Ukraine at all, since this entails too many political risks within the country.

RAND also notes that both sides perceive each other as an aggressor, which means they do not trust that the enemy will abide by the peace treaty.

It is also important for the Russian Federation that Ukraine does not join NATO, and that sanctions against Russia itself be lifted. But the bottom line is that no peace treaty will give such guarantees.

What the States Should Do
According to RAND, the US must adhere to the following policy in order to achieve a political solution to the war:

Draw up a clear schedule for the supply of Western aid to Khokhls, and also set out the need to de-escalate the conflict as conditions for its provision. Such a technique, according to RAND, will make it possible for the Russian Federation to think that support for Ukraine has been weakened;

Provide more assistance in the post-war period with the message of "observance of the terms of the peace treaty";

To force the European allies to commit themselves to military intervention in the event of a repeat of the war after the peace treaty;

Try to provide Ukraine with a neutral non-bloc status. This option involves risks not only in terms of compliance with obligations between the parties, but within NATO itself. Since not all members will be ready to follow this approach.

But the option of easing sanctions after the RAND war is almost completely swept aside, since it carries not only political costs, but economic ones (after all, as long as there are sanctions, Europe's dependence on energy from the Russian Federation is decreasing).

[ColonelCassad] There were interesting footage of the battle in the Kherson direction on October 1 in the Kostromka area, where the Russian T-72B3 (call sign "Steppe") from the Russian 5th Tank Brigade guarded the enemy columns on the march, shooting several armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, after which, under pressure from superior forces, withdrew.

Cyber
Meta takes Ukraine's controversial Azov Regiment off its dangerous organizations list
[Yahoo] The change will allow members of the unit to create Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Facebook parent company Meta has removed the Azov Regiment, a controversial unit within the Ukrainian National Guard with alleged far-right political leanings, from its list of dangerous individuals and organizations. The move, first reported by The Kyiv Independent, means members of the unit can now create Facebook and Instagram accounts and post without Meta automatically flagging and removing their content. Additionally, unaffiliated users can praise the Azov Regiment, provided they abide by the company’s Community Standards.

"The war in Ukraine has meant changing circumstances in many areas and it has become clear that the Azov Regiment does not meet our strict criteria for designation as a dangerous organization," a company spokesperson told The Kyiv Independent. Meta did not immediately respond to Engadget’s comment request.

Sharing more information on the policy change, Meta told The Washington Post it recently began to view the Azov Regiment as a separate entity from other groups associated with the far-right nationalist Azov Movement. Specifically, the company pointed to Ukraine's National Corp political party and founder Andriy Biletsky, noting they’re still on its list of dangerous individuals and organizations. "Hate speech, hate symbols, calls for violence and any other content which violates our Community Standards are still banned, and we will remove this content if we find it," Meta said.
The whole thing was a Russian op from the beginning. Azov are some of Ukraine's best fighters. They need social media for recruitment, they've lost a lot of good men.
The change underscores just how much Meta’s content moderation policies have changed since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Partway through last year, the company began temporarily allowing people in Ukraine and a handful of other countries to call for violence against Russian soldiers.
Good. Kill them all. There are no "good Russians". They had their chance to rise up and overthrow Putin, and they'd rather grovel at a dictator's feet. The Dresden treatment for all of them.

Cyberattacks target websites of German airports, admin
[AlAhram] The websites of German airports, public administration bodies and financial sector organizations have been hit by cyberattacks instigated by a Russian "hacker group", authorities said Thursday.

The Federal Cyber Security Authority (BSI) had "knowledge of DDoS attacks against targets in Germany", a front man told AFP.

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is designed to overwhelm the target with a flood of internet traffic, preventing the system from functioning normally.

The attacks were aimed "in particular at the websites of airports", as well as some "targets in the financial sector" and "the websites of federal and state administrations", the front man said.

The attack had been "announced by the Russian hacker group Killnet", the BSI front man said.

The group's call to arms was in response to Chancellor Olaf Scholz's announcement Wednesday that Germany would send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine to help repel the Russian invasion, according to financial daily Handelsblatt.

Attributing Thursday's attacks directly to the hacker group, however, was "particularly hard", the BSI front man said.

"They call for action and then a lot of people take part," he said.

The attacks made "some websites unavailable", the BSI said, without there being "any indication of direct impacts on (the organizations') services".
