Former Somali army officer accused of oooold war crimes arrested in US
[Garowe] A former high-ranking member of the Somali National Army [SNA] has been arrested in the United States over an alleged violation of human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
against Somali civilians in the 1980s during the reign of dictator Siad Barre, who was ousted about three decades ago.

Yusuf Abdi Ali was arrested by the Homeland security team in Springfield, Virginia, and investigations sleuths announced on Friday over the alleged human rights violations. He was popularly known as Tukeh according to those close to him.

He's accused of extrajudicial killing; torture; cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment; and arbitrary detention, Homeland Security said. He is one of the very many army officers who are being pursued several years later over atrocities committed during Siad Barre's era.

Ali, who is now 69, served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Somali National Army and as the Commander of the most feared Fifth Brigade at that time which was based in Northwest Somalia. He served in the position for two years from 1987 to 1988.

During that time, the Somali army committed numerous serious human rights violations against civilians, according to Homeland Security. Mogadishu was at war with the breakaway region of Somaliland at that time.

"While Yusuf Abdi Ali’s apprehension cannot undo the pain that he allegedly inflicted upon the victims of his purported human rights abuses, it is my sincere hope that by seeing him answer for his apparent role in these heinous crimes, they will be given some form of peace," said Derek W. Gordon, Acting Special Agent in charge of HSI Washington, D.C.

"HSI Washington, D.C. is dedicated to protecting the law-abiding residents of the Washington, D.C. Metro area, while continuing to search out those who intend to benefit from the abuse of others."

A jury in the Eastern District of Virginia found Ali liable in a civil suit in 2019 for the torture of a Somali herder and awarded the plaintiff damages, the News Agency that Dare Not be Named reports. Ali previously drove for Uber and Lyft in Virginia, according to reporting by CNN
...the organization formerly known as the Cable News Network. Now who knows what it might stand for...
Police identified the victims as 40-year-old Elise Wars and her 4-year-old daughter Khori Ashton. The two were staying at the hotel since at least June. Many soldiers fled from Somalia after the collapse of Siad Barre's administration in 1990.

The Intercept Begs Readers for Donations after Multimillion-Dollar Sam Bankman-Fried Grant ‘on Hold'
[Breitbart] The Intercept begged its readers for donations after the publication revealed that a multimillion-dollar grant from disgraced former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried would be placed “on hold” due to FTX filing for bankruptcy.

Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency exchange FTX plummeted from a $32 billion valuation to facing bankruptcy after his company was at the center of significant scandals in the cryptocurrency space last week.

In addition to being a Democrat mega-donor, Bankman-Fried funneled millions of dollars to media outlets through one of his philanthropic entities, the Building a Stronger Future foundation.

The Intercept is one of several media outlets that received a hefty donation from Bankman-Fried’s foundation.

Bankman-Fried pledged $4 million to The Intercept over two years. So far, the outlet has received $500,000 out of the $4 million to support their reporting “on biosafety and pandemic prevention.”

However, The Intercept’s Acting Editor-in-Chief, Roger Hodge, announced on Friday that future grant payments are “on hold,” and used the announcement to ask readers for donations.

Hodge wrote:

Much remains unknown about the future of FTX and SBF’s philanthropic giving. We have been in touch with our colleagues at other nonprofit newsrooms that received support from the Building a Stronger Future Foundation, and we remain hopeful that other donors committed to this work will step forward.

But as of today, we have a significant hole in our budget. If you are able, please consider donating today to support The Intercept’s crusading independent journalism.

It is unclear whether the outlet plans to keep or return the $500,000 it has already received from Bankman-Fried’s foundation.

In the aftermath of FTX’s collapse, some celebrity endorsers, including Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Larry David, David Ortiz, Steph Curry, and Shaquille O’Neal, along with Bankman-Fried, are being sued by cryptocurrency investors.

FTX was “ultimately a Ponzi scheme, misleading customers and prospective customers with the false impression that any cryptocurrency assets held on the Deceptive FTX Platform were safe and were not being invested in unregistered securities,” the lawsuit alleges.

The Intercept is not the only media outlet that received funding from Bankman-Fried’s Building a Stronger Future Foundation.

ProPublica similarly received a $5 million grant from the foundation to support their reporting “on pandemic preparedness and biothreats,” receiving one-third of the grant earlier in the year with the remaining two-thirds disbursed over the next two years.

However, ProPublica president Robin Sparkman also announced that their future grant payments would be “on hold.”

Sparkman said Bankman-Fried’s foundation is “assessing its finances and, concurrently, talking to other funders about taking on some of its grant portfolio.”

New media outlet Semafor, led by former New York Times columnist Ben Smith, also received an undisclosed investment from the Building a Stronger Future Foundation. Vox also received an undisclosed sum from the foundation.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud
[NYPOST] Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced Theranos founder who was once compared to Steve Jobs before she was convicted of defrauding investors who backed the now-defunct blood-testing company, was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison on Friday.

The pregnant Holmes, dressed in a dark blouse and black skirt, was given 135 months behind bars by US District Judge Edward Davila in the same San Jose, Calif., courtroom where a jury convicted her on four counts of investor fraud and conspiracy in January.

Moments after the ruling, the 38-year-old Holmes turned to hug her crying mother. She was also comforted by her father and her partner after the sentence was handed down.

During the hearing, Holmes cried as she said she was "devastated" by her failures and would have done many things differently if she had the chance.

"I have felt deep shame for what people went through because I failed them," she said.

Before handing down the sentence, Davila called the case "troubling on so many levels," questioning what motivated Holmes, a "brilliant" entrepreneur, to misrepresent her company to investors.

"This is a fraud case where an exciting venture went forward with great expectations only to be dashed by untruths, misrepresentations, plain hubris and lies," he said.

Massive flock of sheep has been walking in a circle for 12 days straight in China
[NYPOST] There ain’t no sleep with this counting!

Dozens of sheep have been eerily walking around in a circle for 12 days straight in northern China’s Inner Mongolia region.

The bizarre behavior, captured on surveillance video, shows the large flock continuously marching clockwise in a nearly perfect circle on a farm.

Some other sheep can be seen watching from outside the rotation while others at times stand motionless in the center.

Video of the strange scene was tweeted Wednesday by Chinese state-run outlet People’s Daily, which reported the sheep are perfectly healthy and the cause of the behavior remains a mystery.

The sheep owner, identified as Ms. Miao, claimed the spectacle began with a few sheep before the whole flock joined in, Metro reported. Although there are 34 sheep pens at the farm, only the sheep in one of the pens — number 13 — have been acting this way.

Twitter unblocks Trump's account
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[RIA Novosti] Twitter has unblocked the account of former US President Donald Trump after the majority of participants in a survey conducted by the owner of the social network Elon Musk spoke in favor of it.

The former leadership indefinitely froze the @realDonaldTrump microblog with a blue "tick" indicating authenticity on January 8, 2021 - two days after Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to derail the congressional approval of Democrat Joe Biden 's presidential election victory .

Trump himself has not yet written anything on the page, which has again become visible along with all the publications, but users are already leaving comments there. In addition, the politician promised that he would not return to Twitter if he was unblocked.

The account of the ex-president of the United States has already gained almost 600 thousand subscribers.

The decision to restore the account was made by Musk after almost 52 percent of the 15 million participants in his poll voted for it.

#2  I find it interesting that in faraway Russia, in the midst of all its current troubles, they give space to this story about Twitter and former president Trump.

The Times of Israel does, too, adding:

Earlier this month, Musk, who completed the $44 billion takeover of Twitter in late October, declared that the company wouldn’t let anyone who had been kicked off the site return until Twitter had established procedures on how to do so, including forming a “content moderation council.”

On Friday, Musk tweeted that the suspended Twitter accounts for the comedian Kathy Griffin, the Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson and the conservative Christian news satire website Babylon Bee had been reinstated. He added that a decision on Trump had not yet been made. He also responded “no” when someone on Twitter asked him to reinstate the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ account.

In a tweet Friday, the Tesla CEO described the company’s new content policy as “freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach.”

He explained that a tweet deemed to be “negative” or to include “hate” would be allowed on the site but would be visible only to users who specifically searched for it. Such tweets also would be “demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter,” Musk said.

Rwanda forces kill 'soldier' on DR Congo border
[Iraq News] A man wearing a Congolese military uniform was killed by Rwandan troops early Saturday after he crossed the volatile border and started firing at local forces, the Rwandan military said.

The incident occurred at about 1 am (2300 GMT Friday), the Rwanda Defence Force said, amid heightened tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa over the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
The RDF said on Twitter that "an unidentified soldier believed to be from the FARDC (DR Congo armed forces)" crossed the border "and started shooting at Rwanda Defence Force guard towers".

"He was rubbed out by RDF patrol before causing any casualties," it added.

The shooting took place on the Rwandan side of the so-called "Petite Barriere" border post, one of two linking the main eastern DRC city of Goma and Gisenyi in Rwanda.

Relations between the two neighbours are strained over Kinshasa’s charges that Kigali backs the M23 rebel group, which has been capturing swathes of territory in the eastern DRC in fighting that has sent thousands of people fleeing.

The border area was calm on Saturday after the shooting incident and people were continuing to go about their daily lives.

AFP journalists saw a team from the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism, a body which monitors the Great Lakes area and investigates security incidents, in no-man’s land between Rwanda and DRC.

Congolese officials said the identity of the dead man was not known, but that no Congolese soldier on duty in the area had been reported missing.

"There was a lot of gunfire during the night," said one local resident, Grace Mbala. "We were scared, we thought it was the M23 coming back."

On Friday, Kenya’s former president Uhuru Kenyatta — who is mediating in the conflict — said Rwandan President Paul Kagame had agreed to help push for the M23 to cease fire and withdraw from captured territory.

The main frontline lies about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Goma, while fighting is also under way near the Ugandan border and in Masisi to the west of the city.

Since Kim declared North Korea a "irreversible" nuclear state in September, Washington has ramped up regional security cooperation, including joint military exercises, and is looking for ways to boost the protection it offers Seoul and Tokyo.

Kim slammed what he called "aggression war drills" and said that if America continues to make threats against the North, Pyongyang "will resolutely react.

Government Corruption
AG Special Investigator Jack Smith and Lois Lerner are pals ?
[Daily Caller] Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate former president Donald Trump’s possession of classified information, was a key figure in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)’s infamous targeting of conservative non-profits, according to a 2014 report by Republicans on the House Oversight Committee.

On Oct. 8, 2010, Smith, then-Chief of the DOJ Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section at the time, called a meeting with former IRS official Lois Lerner "to discuss how the IRS could assist in the criminal enforcement of campaign-finance laws against politically active nonprofits," according to testimony from Richard Pilger, then director of the section’s Election Crimes Branch and subordinate of Smith’s, to the Oversight Committee. Lerner eventually resigned from the IRS in 2015 following criticism of her targeting of conservative groups when denying or delaying tax-exempt status. (RELATED: Merrick Garland Announces Special Counsel For Mar-a-Lago, Jan. 6)

"This seems egregious to me — could we ever charge a [18 U.S.C. §] 371 conspiracy to violate laws of the USA for misuse of such non-profits to get around existing campaign finance laws + limits?," Smith wrote in an email to colleagues, per the Oversight Committee report. His email suggested that the department investigate conservative non-profits that reportedly may have violated campaign finance laws, according to The New York Times.

The impetus for the meeting was President Barack Obama’s public criticism of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC, according to the report.

Biden Gave MBS Immunity on Khashoggi that Trump Wouldn't, ‘Humiliating' He's Been Rejected on Oil
[Breitbart] On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s "Morning Joe," Washington Post columnist David Ignatius reacted to the State Department backing immunity for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from a lawsuit over the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi by stating that "it’s disturbing that it’s the Biden administration that ends up doing what Donald Trump himself wouldn’t do." And "humiliating for Biden" to seek support from MBS and get rejected on oil and then to make this move on top of it.

#7  Mohammed bin Salman is the head of a sovereign state. As such, I think he is out of the scope of US prosecution anyway (aside from the delusions of grandeur that seem to characterize the current administration.)

Also, the Saudis are an extremely proud and sensitive people (imho they have nothing to be proud about, but they are) who will see this as nothing but a patronizing insult.

#8  (imho they have nothing to be proud about, but they are)

They're Bedouins with money and they are rather proud of the money part.

#2  I'm curious how he earns a bonus and who decides to give it to him? He is the President and Chief Executive Officer of NAN, so does he consult himself? Race Pimp/Protection Racket is apparently a very lucrative profession.

#3  The thing about corrupt people living more and more outrageously is that life can end immediately but eternity does not end.
