#4  Lord Garth, MESA appears to be smaller than your numbers. From the MESA NA About page:

From its inception in 1966 with 51 founding members, MESA has increased its membership to more than 2,800 and now serves as an umbrella organization for more than fifty institutional members and thirty-six affiliated organizations.

#5  ASMEA had an in person conference in Nov 2021 at a big hotel and had a lot of papers presented and a lot of concurrent sessions. Probably several hundred to a thousand at the event.

MESA had a virtual conference in Nov 2021 also. MESA has numerous institutional sponsors (ASMEA didn't seem to have any). There were more sessions that the ASMEA but of course, virtual is different from in person. MESA says it will have in person conference in 2022.

Afghanistan
Officials: Taliban blocked unaccompanied women from flights
[AlAhram] Afghanistan's Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
rulers refused to allow dozens of women to board several flights, including some overseas, because they were traveling without a male guardian, two Afghan airline officials said Saturday.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions from the Taliban, said dozens of women who arrived at Kabul's international airport Friday to board domestic and international flights were told they couldn't do so without a male guardian.

Some of the women were dual nationals returning to their homes overseas, including some from Canada, according to one of the officials. Women were denied boarding on flights to Islamabad, Dubai and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
on Kam Air and the state-owned Ariana Airline, said the officials.

The order came from the Taliban leadership, said one official.

By Saturday, some women traveling alone were given permission to board an Ariana Airlines flight to western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province, the official said. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
by the time the permission was granted they had missed their flight, he said.

The airport's president and police chief, both from the Taliban movement and both Islamic holy mans, were meeting Saturday with airline officials.

It was still unclear whether the Taliban would exempt air travel from an order issued months ago requiring women traveling more than 45 miles (72 kilometers) to be accompanied by a male relative. Taliban officials contacted by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Since taking power last August, the Taliban leadership have been squabbling among themselves as they struggle to transition from war to governing. It has pit hard-liners _ like acting Prime Minister Mullah Hasan Akhund, who is deeply rooted in the old guard _ against the more pragmatic among them, like Sirajuddin Haqqani
...son of Pashtun warlord Jalaluddin Haqqani, still titular head of the Haqqani Network....
. He took over leadership of the powerful Haqqani network
...a branch of the Afghan Taliban, based in Pakistain. The network is a family business founded by the later Jalaluddin Haqqani...
from his father Jalaluddin Haqanni. The elder Haqqani, who died several years ago, is from Akhund's generation, who ruled Afghanistan under the strict and unchallenged leadership of Mullah Mohammad Omar.

Mullah Baradar Calls for Afghan Self-Sufficiency
[TOLO] "Send us money Endeavor to Persevere"
First Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar said that the aid provided by international donors will alleviate urgent needs for a short period of time, but said that the ministries must work toward self-sufficiency.

Speaking at a ceremony held to celebrate the National Day of Farmers in the capital city of Kabul, Mullah Baradar said that a new agricultural plan will come into effect in the near future which will also benefit half of the Afghan population.

The new plan will pave the way "for irrigation of half of Afghanistan," he said.

"We must work day and night and immediately bring a system that makes Afghans self-sufficient," Mullah Baradar added.

The acting Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Abdul Rahman Rashid, vowed that they have been empowered to prevent many land seizers from seizing the government lands.

The ceremony included an exhibition of Afghan-made products, where various types of products were displayed.

The exhibition was also attended by Afghan women who displayed their products.

"Our business has been broken. Our business has collapsed. Now, with this exhibition, we hope our business will get better," said Farishta Hashimi, a participant.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, around 75 percent of Afghans are making their income through agriculture.

#1  Amusing. Back to the State of Nature. Many small communities manage it. Some islanders and deep forest denizens too who like to be secluded from civilization. But that is not the objective.

The world is stupid today. Spinners and hustlers out of Londonabad will keep bombarding the world with news of how their money can make a difference until someone pays. Following which a steady channel may be established to 'support' Afghanistan's struggle with poverty.

Andropov should have finished off Afghanistan with two nuclear bombs. Islamic terrorism would have never been discovered. The natives were going to be miserable anyway. 9/11 may never have happened.

#2  Islamic terrorism would have never been discovered.

Islamic terrorism goes back to the Prophet Mohammad and the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs who followed him. It is commanded in the Koran as the method of jihad to most quickly bring unbelievers to surrender and conversion.

Lack of funds threatening WFP operations in Afghanistan
[Khaama] Send us money
United Nations World Food Program has said that they keep providing food for people in Afghanistan but lack of funds is threatening their operations in the country.

WFP in a Twitter post said still half of the Afghan population-23 million people- need emergency food assistance.

"Every day, WFP convoys are on the road- through snow and in freezing temperature- to bring food to people across Afghanistan." Reads the Tweet.

This is the first time the UN aid agency is complaining about the dearth of money for providing food in Afghanistan as 97 percent of people in Afghanistan are under the poverty line and in desperate need of assistance.

Women protest against girls' schools' closure in Kabul
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A small group of women erupted into the streets of Kabul on Saturday, March 26, 2022, to protest against the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
’s announcement banning teenage girls from going to schools.

The female protestors said access to education is an alienable right of humans and girls likewise the rest of the boys in Afghanistan have the right to get educated.

The protestors were chanting, "We are tired of ignorance", "Shame on the international community", "You took my land, don’t take my education", "Seeking education is obligatory on male and female."

The demonstration that was staged at the gate of the Ministry of Education in central Kabul was attended by parents, women activists, females, students, and a few young men.

"Education is our right, I want to go to school to study and make my future and the future of my country. I want to go to school as my brother does." Said a student.

The protestors further said that there are no limitations on female education in other Islamic countries like Iran, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, and Indonesia so why should the Afghan girls not go to schools.

The Ministry of Education of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan announced on March 23rd that secondary schools for girls shall be closed until further notice.
Al Ahram adds:
Infuriating many Afghans is the knowledge that many of the Taliban of the younger generation, like Sirajuddin Haqqani, are educating their girls in Pakistain, while in Afghanistan women and girls have been targeted by their repressive edicts since taking power.

This latest assault on women's rights in Taliban-run Afghanistan denying women air travel, comes just days after the all-male religiously driven government broke its promise to allow girls to return to school after the sixth grade.

The move enraged the international community, which has been reluctant to recognize the Taliban-run government since the Taliban swept into power last August, fearing they would revert to their harsh rule of the 1990s. The Taliban's refusal to open up education to all Afghan children also infuriated large swaths of the Afghan population. On Saturday, dozens of girls demonstrated in the Afghan capital demanding the right to go to school.

An Afghan charity called PenPath, which runs dozens of ``secret' schools with thousands of volunteers, is planning to stage countrywide protests to demand the Taliban reverse its order, said Matiullah Wesa, PenPath founder.

U.S. special representative for Afghanistan Tom West canceled meetings with the Taliban at the Doha Forum after classes for older girls were halted.

Ikran Tahil's mother: MP Amina's murder was pre-meditated
[Garowe] Qali Mohamud Gulad, the mother of slain National Intelligence Security Agency [NISA] cyber security chief Ikran Tahil, now says the death of Amina Mohammed Abdi, an MP from HirShabelle, was intelligently planned and executed by state actors.

Amina Mohammed, a candidate for a third-term Member of Parliament, was killed in Beledweyne town in HirShabelle on Wednesday night in a suicide explosion to which al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
has taken responsibility. HirShabelle President Ali Gudlawe Hussein said over 50 people died in the attack.

But according to Qali Mohamud, the slain politician was targeted in the attack, noting that it was carefully planned by the people who were trailing her. She insists the MP bore the price of fighting for justice of her daughter, whose death caused ripples in Somalia last year.

Ikran Tahil went missing in June 2021 but her employer, NISA, would later say she was kidnapped and subsequently, executed by al-Shabaab hard boys. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
the Somalia-based al-Qaeda linked group denied the allegations.
No, no! Certainly not!
And Abdi, 32, who died on Wednesday, joined Tahil's family in calling for justice both inside and outside parliament. The family directly accused Fahad Yasin and four other senior intelligence officials of allegedly being responsible for the NISA agent's death.

So fragile was Tahil's death that Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble sacked NISA boss Fahad Yasin, leading to a fierce confrontation between him and Farmaajo. The outgoing president would later reinstate Yasin as his National Security Advisor.

The death of the MP has also sparked outrage in Somalia, with former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud calling for an international probe while former HirShabelle leader Mohammed Abdi Waare terming it as an "liquidation" by Villa Somalia. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
Farmaajo termed it as a "terrorist" attack.

"A girl was away from us at first, but now our other daughter has been killed. Everyone who spoke out against the Ikraan case is being pursued," she said, adding that she offered her condolences to the victims.

Wednesday's explosions at Beledweyne town in the Hiraan region also leftover 108 people injured. Hours earlier, another attack at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu left close to 10 people dead, and al-Shabaab had taken responsibility.

Late Amina Mohammed Abdi and former parliamentarian Hassan Ali Abdi Dhuhul were buried in Mogadishu on Friday.

Terror attacks have intensified in the Horn of Africa nation despite assurance by security forces that security had been heightened to allow the country to hold peaceful elections. Somalia is yet to conclude elections, over a year later after the tenure of Farmaajo expired.

Converted to Islam and sold: How radicals are trapping gullible women in Kerala
[OneIndia] Writer-director Sudipto Sen said recently that nearly 32,000 girls from Kerala and Mangaluru from Hindu and Christian families have been converted to Islam. Many of them have been trafficked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and other Islamic war zones in the past 10 years. Most of them end up in Syria, Afghanistan or such countries he added.

Last week, it was announced that movie called The Kerala Story by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Sudipto Sen is in the making and will be released soon.

The issue had been brought to light by the National Commission for Women Chairperson, Rekha Sharma in 2017 when she said that the situation is Kerala is alarming as it is not just religious conversion but also organised human trafficking that is taking place. I have asked the DGP of the state to look into the role of some organizations, their source of funding as these are playing a big role in forceful conversions, she also said.

It is a terrible problem and has been going on for long an official tells OneIndia. At an adult held in Pathanamthitta in 2019, a 26 year girl narrated her story on how she was faced to join the Islamic State. She said when she refused, she was tortured.

In 2018, the National Investigation Agency had arrested one Muhammad Riyaz on the ground that he was forcibly trying to covert his wife. It was also alleged that he was planning to sell her off as a sex slave.

The plight of many girls in Kerala who have been subject to conversions and then trying to be sold off as sex slaves is quite similar to what the Yazidi women faced at the hands of the Islamic State.

Laila Khoudeida, secretary of the Yazidi Organisation who also works to provide mental and behavioural health services to the distraught Yazidis in an exclusive conversation with OneIndia had said scores of Yazidis had been killed by the ISIS. The ISIS termed the Yazidis as Devil worshippers and many women had been taken as sex slaves. The issue of the women has to also be treated as a special and unique case that requires immediate medical attention. A comprehensive psychological evaluation is important to be completed on each female victim of sexual violence and rape so as to prevent the risk of suicide attempts, she had said.

Last July, the Assam police revealed a larger plot when it learnt that several girls from the state were being trafficked to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The police while naming Muzzaful Haque and Rakbul Hussain as the main accused also managed to rescue several victims from a lodge in Kerala.

In an 8,000 page chargesheet filed by the NIA against Areeb Majeed who returned from the crutches of the ISIS, the agency while quoting him said, Indians are treated as sex slaves.

As Sen pointed out even Christian girls in Kerala have been subject to the same torture. In 2012, the Global Council of Indian Christians had warned Christians about this growing problem. The Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council reported that there had been been around 2,868 victims of forcible conversion in Kerala between 2006 and 2009.

The National Commission for Minorities had written to the Union Government stating that Christians were soft targets for Islamic gunnies in Kerala.

Palestinians hold West Bank local elections as independent lists proliferate
[IsraelTimes] Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", formally boycotts vote, but some members still competing across region; Paleostinians have not seen national elections for over a decade and a half

Paleostinians in major cities across the West Bank headed to the ballot box on Saturday to vote in a second round of local elections, a rare democratic moment in the Paleostinian Authority.

Around 234 slates fought it out in 50 cities including Ramallah, Hebron, and Jenin. Another 23 municipalities saw a single list running unopposed, according to Paleostinian elections chief Hanna Nasser.

Head of Ben-Gurion University says school uncovered Islamist cell operating ‘modesty patrols’
[IsraelTimes] The head of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev says an Islamist cell that operated "modesty patrols" and threatened students has been uncovered at the school in Beersheba.

According to Prof. Daniel Chamovitz, the group was made up of three people who "photographed female Bedouin students and sent the pictures back to their clans if they were not modest enough."

"How did we discover this? Because they complained," he says during a cultural event in the southern city. "It’s a complicated situation societally because they can’t complain publicly."

"Just as there are modesty patrols in Mea Shearim that if there’s a Haredi man or woman not behaving properly, they threaten them," he says, adding the group also photographed male Bedouin students.

"They threaten to send the photos if they don’t change their behavior."

Chamovitz says the school "dealt with" the issue, but refuses to say whether the members of the cell still study at the university.

He also says that when the university learned about the cell, "we were startled, Jews and Arabs both."

Iran honours Yemeni resistance on seventh anniversary of Saudi invasion
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has lit up its historic landmarks with pictures of the leaders of Ansarullah movement and the flags of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
This coincides with the seventh anniversary of the Saudi-led war and in showcase of international solidarity.

Yemen’s ambassador to Iran, Ibrahim al-Dailami, published a series of photographs of the group’s founder Sayyid Hussein al-Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
and current leader Sayyid Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, as well as that of martyred President Saleh al-Sammad and others.

The photographs were lit up in Azadi Square, one of Tehran’s most important squares.

The ambassador thanked the Municipality of Tehran for the move.
