‘Democracy is not working’: 8-minute interview with a member of the Proud Boys
[IsraelTimes] ’Odin,’ a former Moslem, has donated to former US president Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
, would be happy to see Trump Jr. on the national stage, and is convinced the vote was stolen.

OK, but what if the Supreme Court, what if that doesn’t work?

Then he has no choice but to concede, right?

And we just take it. As long as we can hold onto the Senate, that’s OK. Or if he wants to come back in 2024, if possible. We have to sit tight.
As federal investigations into the January 6 Capitol riot in Washington, DC, continue, a handful of right-wing bad boy groups have emerged as focal points for prosecutors, particularly when they are looking to prove coordinated planning in advance of the day’s violence.

Taliban Meets Khalilzad, Qatari Official in Doha

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani met with Taliban
...Arabic for students...
negotiators and their deputy leader Abdul Ghani Baradar in Doha on Monday evening.

This meeting follows Khalilzad's recent visits to Kabul and Pakistain. In Kabul, the US envoy shared a proposed draft for Afghan peace with Afghanistan’s politicians.

A Taliban front man in Doha, Mohammad Naeem, said: "The implementation of the Doha agreement, the current situation of Afghanistan and the ongoing process of the Intra-Afghan negotiations" were discussed at the meeting.

In Kabul, key Afghan politicians held talks on Sunday to discuss two upcoming conferences on Afghanistan peace.

Some negotiators of the Afghan republic and the Taliban are still in Doha and are continuing their meetings, according to one negotiator. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
according to analysts, there has been no progress in these meetings.

"The attitude in favor of negotiations is much better than in the past," a republic negotiator Ghulam Farooq Majroh said on Sunday. "We will continue our efforts to achieve good results."

Concerns are growing over the country’s future--both on the political and security front-- as the May 1st deadline to withdraw all US and foreign troops--called for in the US-Taliban agreement--draws closer.

The commander of US Central Command, Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, has said that fighting in Afghanistan will intensify sharply and Talibs could threaten major cities unless a Biden administration diplomatic push to end the 20-year conflict yields results in the next two months.

Quoted by the Los Angeles Times, the US general said: "If we withdraw and no deal was made with the Taliban, I think the government of Afghanistan is going to be in for a very stiff fight to retain possession of towns and cities."

Meanwhile,
...back at the railroad tracks, Little Nell tried to kick her bound feet and scream post the snotty handkerchief Scarface Al had stuff into her mouth...
quoted by Rooters, Afghanistan’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates Javid Ahmad said that the Afghan peace talks should be rotated to other venues, accusing the Qatari hosts of failing to push hard enough for the Taliban to reduce violence.

He said that peace talks should not be held in one fixed location, but rotate among venues in Europe, Asia, the Middle East or Afghanistan itself.

The Taliban, which opened an office in Qatar in 2013, were too "comfortable" there, he said, as quoted by Rooters. "We want the Taliban to get out of their comfort zone."

Palestinian delegations head to Egypt for second round of election talks
[AlAhram] The Cairo-based talks are scheduled to start on Tuesday, following the first round that was held in the Egyptian capital last month and resulted in an agreement on the mechanisms for holding elections

It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
Strip, the West Bank and abroad are heading to Cairo to participate in a new round of talks in a bid to overcome obstacles facing the upcoming Paleostinian general elections.
The factions arrived at the Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt on their way to Cairo, while other delegations have left the West Bank via Jordan, and will be joined by delegations residing outside the Paleostinian territories.

The parliamentary elections are set to be held on 22 May and the presidential elections have been set for 31 July.

The two-day talks are scheduled to commence on Tuesday after the first round that was held in Cairo last month and resulted in an agreement on the mechanisms for holding the elections.

This second round of dialogue focuses mainly on the elections for the National Council and the reactivation and building of the Paleostine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

Last month, the Paleostinian factions held a meeting in Cairo, during which they discussed several issues related to the Paleostinian elections and reached an agreement to hold another meeting in March.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine confirmed earlier that the Cairo-based meeting scheduled for this month to discuss the issue of the National Council will be held on time, dismissing reports that the meeting would be postponed until after the parliamentary elections.

There would be no backtracking on the decision to hold the general elections, presidential front man Nabil Abu Rudeineh said on Monday.

Speaking to Voice of Paleostine, Abu Rudeineh announced that the decision to hold the general elections would not be reversed because elections are a "democratic and a popular requirement," while affirming that they would be held based on clear and proper rules.

He added that the Fatah movement is determined to run on one unified electoral list in the first full presidential and parliamentary elections in 15 years.

Tunisia: Cabinet reshuffle deepens rifts in political establishment
[MIDDLEEASTEYE.NET] A political stand-off between Tunisia's President Kais Saied, Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, and a fragmented parliament is threatening to upend the country's fragile democratic transition 10 years after the outbreak of the Arab Spring.

The North African country, often hailed as the Arab world's only successful democracy after the 2011 uprisings, has been engulfed in economic and political turmoil since the 2019 elections that brought Saied, an independent, to power.

The same year also witnessed the election of a polarised parliament, where the moderate Islamist Ennahda, now the largest bloc, failed to gain a majority.

after spending years in solitary confinement.

The 63-year-old holy man was handcuffed during the court session in Riyadh, which was "speedily adjourned" and scheduled to take place again in four months, according to his son Abdullah Aloudh.

Odah was first detained in September 2017 after tweeting a prayer for reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Qatar

, three months after Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Manama launched a blockade against the emirate.

Following multiple delays, the holy man's hearing resumed in October 2020. He stands accused of 63 accounts of terrorism.

The charges against him include exposing "injustices towards prisoners" and "expressing cynicism and sarcasm about the government's achievements".

Odah has also been accused of affiliation with the Qatari royal family, with the Saudi government citing his public unwillingness to support the Saudi-led boycott against the emirate.

The scholar, who has 13 million followers on Twitter, was arrested as part of a wave of arrests targeting critics and opponents of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

Last year, Aloudh wrote on Twitter that the Saudi authorities were "slowly" killing his father in prison by neglecting the scholar's medical needs.

Aloudh also said in 2020 that his father was denied self-defence during a previous court hearing.

Syria: Turkey asks for western support amid Russia-backed attacks
[MIDDLEEASTEYE.NET] Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
to bring an end to the war in Syria, casting Ankara as a stabilising force that defends democracy against the Syrian government amid a wave of attacks on Ottoman Turkish-held territories. In an op-ed published on Monday on the 10th anniversary of the Syrian uprising, Erdogan said Turkey has called for an inclusive political system that could address the Syrian people’s demand for human dignity while hosting more than three million Syrian refugees and creating safe zones in areas seized from terrorist groups such as the Islamic State

(IS).
They’ve been singing the same song from the beginning: give us the Kurdish territory along our border in Syria to shelter all those Sunni Syrians fighting to overthrow the Alawite Assad regime, incidentally displacing the Kurds from their homes.
"[The] most sensible option is to throw [western powers] weight behind Turkey and become part of the solution in Syria, at minimum cost and with maximum impact," he wrote.

"Our specific expectations are obvious. Primarily, we expect the West to adopt a clear position against YPG, the PKK’s Syrian branch, which attacks safe zones and plays into the hands of the regime. Instead, adequate support must go to the legitimate Syrian opposition as an investment in peace and stability."

Erdogan’s statements came as Syrian government forces, backed by Russia, targeted civilian areas and oil tankers in Jarablus and al-Babin in northern Syria on Sunday night, with ballistic missiles and rockets fired from the government-held Kuweires airbase, according to a statement by the Ottoman Turkish defence ministry.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan became the major importer of arms in Asia
[DAILYTIMES.PK] Pakistain become major importer of arms in Asia and Oceania according to the report of SIPRI released on Monday.Asia and Oceania were the largest importing region for major arms, receiving 42% of global arms transfers in 2016—2020. In addition to Pakistain, India, Australia, China and South Korea were also among the biggest importers in the region.

Exports by China, the world’s fifth largest arms exporter in 2016—20, decreased by 7.8% between 2011-20115 and 2016-2020. Chinese arms exports accounted for 5.2pc of total arms exports in 2016—2020. Pakistain, Bangladesh and Algeria were the largest recipients of Chinese arms.

"For many states in Asia and Oceania, a growing perception of China as a threat is the main driver for arms imports," said Siemon Wezeman, Senior Researcher at SIPRI.

The report noted that international deliveries of arms were flat in the period 2016-2020, ending more than a decade of increases.

The United States, La Belle France and Germany — three of the world’s biggest exporters — increased deliveries, but falls in exports from Russian and China offset the rise, SIPRI said.

It was the first time since 2001—2005 that the volume of deliveries of major arms between countries — an indicator of demand — did not increase from the previous five-year period, SIPRI said.

Iraq
Turkey, Iran may be on collision course in Iraq — analysts
[AHVALNEWS] Iraq is quickly becoming a major point of friction between regional rivals The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
and Iran, analysts Vali Golmohammadi and Hamidreza Azizi said on Saturday.

The two countries are vying for stronger positions in neighbouring Iraq amidst a bid for greater influence as Turkey increases its military presence in the country’s north with the aim of taking on the threat it says is posed by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the pair wrote for Washington-based National Interest think tank.

A diplomatic crisis erupted between Ankara and Tehran earlier this month when Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad, Iraj Masjedi, rejected Ottoman Turkish military interventions in Iraq, referring to Turkey’s increasing aerial and ground cross-border operations into the country targeting the PKK, an gang that has been at war for Kurdish self rule in Turkey for almost four decades.

The statement prompted both countries to summon their respective ambassadors for a brow beating over a series of statements accusing the other of disrespecting Iraq’s borders. Turkey’s own ambassador to Iraq said over Twitter that Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
was not in a position to lecture Turkey on interfering beyond its own borders.

While it may appear that the countries have a different approach with Kurdish krazed killers, the pair wrote, the real issue has to do with Iran’s perceived decline in influence in Iraq.

"Widespread public protests in Iraq in late 2019 against Iran’s role was the first major sign of this downward spiral and the liquidation of Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani
dealt the most severe blow to Tehran’s influence,’’ the pair wrote.

This may have prompted Ottoman Turkish leaders to conclude the time was "ripe for rolling back Iranian influence and restoring what they perceive as Turkey’s historical role in Iraq,’’ they added, noting that Ankara does not appear to be seeking confrontation with Iran in Iraq, but rather " to exploit the country’s current power vacuum to strengthen its strategic leverage in the region.’’

The current trajectory involves the "risk of an unwanted clash between the two sides,’’ the analysts said, pointing to the example of war-torn Syria, where an "unrelenting Iranian and Ottoman Turkish approaches toward their actual or perceived zones of influence could easily lead to an escalation, should one of the parties decide to challenge the other’s interests. ’’

Iraq paramilitaries agree to stop attacks on US if Kadhimi demands withdrawal
[MIDDLEEASTEYE.NET] After frantic meetings in Baghdad, Beirut and Tehran, Iranian-backed Iraqi paramilitaries have agreed to stop attacks against US forces in Iraq on the condition that Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi formally demands an American withdrawal, officials and faction commanders told Middle East Eye.

Kadhimi must tell Washington that the pullout has to be completed within 12 months, they added. Sources said it is likely that Kadhimi will comply and make the formal request.

On 1 March, the armed factions announced the end of an unofficial armistice with US forces in Iraq that had largely held since October, despite a few violations.

Previously, attacks on US troops and their western allies in the anti-Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group military coalition had been routine, as the paramilitaries sought to push the United States from Iraq.

However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
a rocket attack on a military base in Erbil last month prompted the US to launch air strikes on a position just inside the Syrian border occupied by Kataeb Hezbollah, the paramilitary group most hostile to Washington, and Kataeb Sayyid al-Shuhada, a smaller Shia faction.

Although the Iraqi armed factions declared that they had nothing to do with the Erbil attack, which killed a military contractor and maimed nine others, including a US soldier, the Pentagon pointed the finger of blame at Kataeb Sayyid al-Shuhada.

The tit-for-tat attacks between the two sides resulted in a 3 March raid on Ain al-Assad, a base in western Anbar province that hosts the largest US presence, with at least 10 short-range BM-21 "Grad" missiles launched at the troops there.

The Iraqi military said the attack did not cause any casualties, but the Pentagon announced the next day that a US contractor had died after suffering a heart attack during the raid.

Kadhimi's embattled government, which has sought to limit the paramilitaries’ power and been targeted by them in return, has attempted to limit the fallout from such skirmishes and buy time for Washington and Tehran to begin negotiations to resume the 2015 nuclear deal, hoping they will calm the region.

This latest de-escalation agreement was made by a group of faction commanders known as the Coordinating Committee for the Resistance® Factions, and the Iraqi government, sources said.

It stipulates that all attacks must cease and in return Kadhimi will send a letter to the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
Security Council asking for the US-led coalition’s mission in Iraq to end, two of the parties that concluded the agreement told MEE.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinians lambast Netanyahu's visit to archaeological site near settler outpost
[MIDDLEEASTEYE.NET] Paleostine’s foreign affairs ministry on Monday condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the ancient site of Khirbet Susiya, south of the occupied West Bank, to boost his election campaign among settlers.

Netanyahu's visit to Susiya was to inaugurate an archaeological site that belongs to an Israeli Jewish settlement in the area.

According to the Wafa news agency, the Israeli army had closed the area to prevent foreign and Paleostinian activists from reaching the ancient site and used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse them, but no casualties were reported.
Prob'ly because they used tear gas and stun grenades instead of artillery and close air aupport.
The Paleostinian Authority’s foreign affairs ministry said in a statement that Netanyahu's visit is part of "manufacturing religious places" to control Paleostinian land and that it will open "the appetite of extremist settlers to commit more violations, attacks and crimes against Paleostinian citizens".

The statement added that settlers will be emboldened by the visit and allow them to feel they have "cover, protection and legitimacy for their expansionist colonial projects".

Khirbet Susiya is located near the Paleostinian area of Masafer Yatta. The site has Mamluk heritage and a mosque.
It's the 7,204th holiest site in all Islam, y'know...
In 1983, settlers had started to build their outpost in Susiya. In 1986, the Israeli army expelled 400 Paleostinians living in Susiya to a nearby Paleostinian village, as Israel had designated the area an archaeological site following the discovery of ruins of an ancient Jewish synagogue.

Responsibility for the site was turned over to the Jewish settlers from the nearby illegal "Susiya" settlement, which was built on the village’s lands in 1983. All settlements in the West Bank are deemed illegal under international law.

In 2001, the Israeli army, with the help of settlers, destroyed the entire village after Paleostinians (that were not from Susiya) killed an Israeli settler from the neighbouring settlement.

By the time the residents rebuilt their village on the area they live on today - situated between the settlement of Susiya and the archaeological site - Israel had designated the land as Area C, leading Israel to deem it an "illegal encampment".

Area C is the more than 60 percent of the West Bank under full Israeli security and civilian control, as part of the 1993 Oslo Accords.

The residents have tried on numerous occasions to get building permits from Israel's civil administration, but like most of those from Paleostinians living in Area C, their requests were denied.

TAKING CONTROL OF PALEOSTINIAN LANDS
The PA’s foreign ministry said that Netanyahu's inauguration of the Kirbet Susiya site is "a blatant Israeli attempt to Judaise the heart of Paleostinian communities".

"[The Israeli] occupation is working to manufacture places it calls 'religious' in areas threatened by settlements as a method of controlling the Paleostinian lands," the ministry said.

Some of the protesters on Sunday evening marched toward Khirebet Susiya carrying Paleostinian flags. They called for ending the occupation and rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the Israeli ethnic cleansing of the Masafer Yatta area, which has 19 hamlets and their residents depend on animal husbandry as their source of livelihood.

Israel occupied the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war. Settlement expansion has been an official Israeli policy ever since. There are almost 620,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank living under the protection of the Israeli army.
Perfectly in accordance with international law and custom until a peace treaty is signed.

[MIDDLEEASTEYE.NET] Progressive members of the US Congress renewed their call for the Israeli government to vaccinate Paleostinians living under its control in a letter urging the Biden administration to pressure Israel to live up to its obligations as the occupying power in the Paleostinian territories. The document, signed by 17 members of the House of Representatives and addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday, was the third congressional letter criticising Israeli policies over the past four days.
Golly. Seventeen out of 435 is almost 4%.
"We write to request that the State Department take additional action to ensure that the Israeli government provide Covid-19 vaccines and facilitate vaccination programs for Paleostinians living in the West Bank and Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
," the politicians said.

#1  Israel haven't been an occupying entity since the Oslo accords. Anyway, the vaccine they really need is the one against Islamism.

Malaysian Govt Appeals Ruling Allowing Christians to use ‘Allah’ in Publications
[BenarNews] The Malaysian government is appealing last week’s High Court ruling lifting a ban on Christian publications using the word "Allah" to refer to God, the attorney general told BenarNews on Monday. The issue is highly charged in Moslem-majority Malaysia, where Christians have been using the word for centuries. Major political parties had urged the government to appeal the ruling, which some Moslem groups said could lead to "confused" Moslems renouncing Islam and embracing "pluralist thinking."

Attorney General Idrus Harun confirmed that the notice of the appeal, dated Mar. 12, was submitted to the Court of Appeal on Monday, but did not give details.

"The submission on appeal was done today [Monday]," Harun told BenarNews via text message.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia reveals the number of soldiers killed in Syria
[AlMasdar] The First Deputy Chairman of the Defense Committee of the State Duma, Andrei Krasov, announced that 112 Russian soldiers were killed during the armed conflict in Syria.

The deputy’s statements came during a meeting with the State Duma Committee for Health Affairs, during which he said:

"According to recent military data provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense, about 112 soldiers have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the armed conflict.

The Russian Armed Forces officially entered the Syrian conflict on September 30, 2015 and have since established a number of bases across the country, including its main installation at the Hmemim Airport in Latakia.

Among the most prominent field achievements made by the Syrian forces, with the support of Russia, was the lifting of the three-year-long siege on the city of Deir Ezzor, which was imposed on the administrative capital by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS).

Furthermore, the Syrian Arab Army was able to retake a large amount of territory in the central part of the country that was occupied by the Islamic State since 2015; this included the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) and the strategic al-Sha’er Gas Fields.

While the Syrian conflict has witnessed a significant decrease in violence since 2015, festivities are still ongoing in the central part of the country, where the Islamic State has reemerged.

Lawyer: Iran charges detained French tourist with spying
[AlAhram] Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has charged a French tourist with spying and ’spreading propaganda against the system,’ his lawyer said Monday, the latest in a series of cases against foreigners at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and the West.

Benjamin Berier was arrested some 10 months ago after taking pictures in a desert area where photography is prohibited and asking questions on social media about Iran's obligatory Islamic headscarf for women, said his lawyer Saeed Dehghan.

Dehghan told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named the charges came in a Sunday hearing in the justice department in the northeastern city of Mashahd. He said Berier was in good health.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
’he is angry because of the charges’ and length of detention, Dehghan said. He said the city's senior prosecutor was expected to decide in the coming days whether to send the case before a judge.

’If the prosecutor endorses the charge, his case will go to a judge to decide,’ said Dehghan.

Authorities were holding Berier at a prison in Mashhad, Dehghan said. Under Iranian law, a spying conviction can result in up to 10 years in prison.

The lawyer said Berier has had telephone contact with his family in La Belle France and authorities provided both consular and legal access to him in recent months.

Berier has become the latest Westerner held on widely criticized espionage charges. On Sunday, prominent British-Iranian dual national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe reappeared in a Tehran court to face similar accusations of spreading propaganda after completing a five-year prison sentence. She remains in limbo in Iran awaiting the verdict, unable to fly home to London.

The cases come as Iran escalates pressure on the United States and European powers, including La Belle France and Britannia, to grant the badly needed sanctions relief the country received under its tattered nuclear accord with world powers.

While former President Donald Trump
...Oh, noze! Not him!...
abandoned the landmark nuclear deal with Iran in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on the country, President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. Former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body....
has offered to join in talks toward restoring the deal. But Washington and Tehran have reached an impasse, with each insisting the other move first to revive the deal.

Rights groups accuse hard-liners in Iran's security agencies of using foreign detainees as bargaining chips for money or influence in negotiations with the West. Tehran denies it, but there have been such prisoner exchanges in the past. Last March for instance, Iran and La Belle France swapped French researcher Roland Marchal for Iranian engineer Jalal Ruhollahnejad.

Four-year-old Canadian girl released from Syrian detention camp
[MIDDLEEASTEYE.NET] A four-year-old girl has been released from a detention camp in northeast Syria and is on her way to Canada without her mother, officials have said.

The release of the child, whose identity is being withheld, was secured through the efforts of her aunt and a former US diplomat, not through the Canadian government, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
...hereditary prime minister of the Great White North...
said on Monday.

"This story was one where the family themselves took the initiative to bring the daughter to Canada. The mother remains in Syria. She's now with, I believe, an aunt or a relative," he said.

"The federal government facilitated the travel documents but this was something that was done by the family involved."

Peter Galbraith, the former US diplomat, said the child made it out of a camp in northeast Syria last Friday and would live with a relative in Canada.

"It's very tough to give up your child," Galbraith told CTV News. "She clearly was a very good mother and the evidence of that is that she put her child first and realized that it would be a disaster growing up in a prison camp in Syria and instead she gave the child a future."

The Canadian government has faced fierce criticism from human rights

Canada's department of foreign affairs said in a statement to Middle East Eye that given the security situation on the ground, Ottawa's "ability to provide any kind of consular assistance in Syria remains extremely limited".

"Canadian consular officials are actively engaged with Syrian Kurdish authorities to seek information on Canadians in their custody," it said. "We continue to follow the situation very closely."
