German airport suspends flights after car drives through gate
[CBSNEWS] A man drove a car through the security perimeter at Hannover Airport in northern Germany on Saturday, police said, prompting authorities to suspend flights for more than four hours. Officials said no one was injured.
"Alert! Alert! Bogey on the field! Stop the takeoffs!"
Police said the man was under the influence of drugs when he drove the Poland-registered car through a gate and onto the apron, German news agency dpa reported. They said the man tried to follow a landing plane operated by Greek airline Aegean.
"Mary! Mary! Come back to me, Mary!"
Police cars stopped the vehicle and officers overpowered the driver. Bomb disposal experts examined the car but found no dangerous objects. The incident took place just more than a week after police said they were tightening airport security over terrorism fears, BBC News reported.
"[Sob!] I want Mary!"
"You need detox!"
"She's gone! Back to Czestokowa! I'll never see her again!"

Federal police said the man's motive was unclear but there was no indication so far the incident was terror-related. They believe he acted alone.
Ah, for the days when stupidity and drink were the default for this kind of story!

#1  These sort of incidents are blessings as security really needs to be better if someone can drive onto the airport air side.

Sounds like they need retractable bollards.

Afghanistan
White House refutes report regarding US withdrawal from Afghanistan
[DAWN] The White House on Saturday refuted reports that US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
has decided to withdraw almost half of American troops stationed in Afghanistan, Bloomberg reported.

Last week, reports had surfaced that Trump was planning to withdraw 7,000 troops from Afghanistan by the summer, with an American official telling AFP on condition of anonymity "that decision has been made. There will be a significant withdrawal."

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
White House and US National Security Council spokesperson Garrett Marquis today rubbished those claims in an emailed statement, saying: "The president has not made a determination to drawdown United States (US) military presence in Afghanistan and he has not directed the Department of Defense to begin the process of withdrawing US personnel from Afghanistan."

#4  The pace of hunting down bad guys both at ground level and from above has accelerated, as was recently noted — and both by Coalition and Afghan forces.

Given President Trump’s preferred approach that winning is the goal, I look forward to seeing how he chooses to shake things up on this battlefield, given what he has recently done in other areas of operation.

Hamas denies Mubarak claim it sent fighters to Egypt during 2011 uprising
Protesting too much.
[IsraelTimes] Terror group decries alleged efforts to ’embroil the Paleostinian movement into Egypt’s internal affairs,’ says its committed to non-intervention in other countries’ affairs

Gazoo-ruling terror group Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, on Saturday denied an allegation by Egypt’s deposed president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
that it sent hundreds of men across the border into Sinai during the 2011 uprising.

Mubarak took to the witness stand in a Cairo court Wednesday to testify about jailbreaks allegedly orchestrated by his successor Mohammed Morsi and members of the Moslem Brüderbund.

The former president said he had received information at the time from his intelligence chief on infiltration by gunnies from the Gazoo Strip to the country’s east during the Egyptian uprising six years ago that saw him ousted from power.

"General Omar Suleiman
... Now former Vice president of Egypt. From 1993 until his appointment to that office in 2011 he was Minister without Portfolio and Director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate (EGID)...
informed me on January 29 (2011) that 800 armed bandidos turbans infiltrated through the border," he said, adding that fighters from Hamas, assisted by North Sinai residents, used underground tunnels to cross.

But Hamas said in a statement that it "strongly denies the claims made by Egypt’s ousted president Mohammed Hosni Mubarak during his testimony in court."

"Mubarak claimed that Hamas sent 800 members to Cairo in order to release Paleostinian, Egyptian, and Arab prisoners from the Egyptian jails," it said.

"While Hamas deplores some parties’ insistence to embroil the Paleostinian movement into Egypt’s internal affairs, it reiterates its commitment to its policy of not intervening in the internal affairs of other countries."

Mubarak was pushed out after three decades at the helm, during Arab Spring inspired protests that took over Egypt’s Tahrir Square in early 2011.

In March 2017, he was acquitted of charges of killing protesters, but he remains under investigation for alleged corruption.

Morsi ruled Egypt for just a year before mass protests spurred then army chief and now President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi to overthrow him in July 2013.

Arabia
Bahrain has revoked over 800 nationals of citizenship since 2012
[PRESSTV] The Al Khalifah regime in Bahrain has stripped more than 800 nationals of their citizenship during the past six years, a human rights group says.

According to a new report by the UK-based NGO, SALAM for Democracy and Human Rights, cited by the Arabic-language Bahrain Mirror news website on Saturday, Manama has revoked the citizenship of 804 nationals from the beginning of 2012, a year after widespread anti-regime rallies began to rock the small Persian Gulf island country.

SALAM, which tries to preserve universal principles of dignity and respect by shielding democracy and human rights, detailed by the year the number of revocations per year: “2018 (298) - 2017 (156) - 2016 (90) - 2015 (208) - 2014 (21) - 2013 (0) - 2012 (31).”

It also said that the highly controversial move of revoking citizenship with an increasing rate is taken with the growing use of the judiciary for punishment despite international convictions.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Appeals stripped 25 Bahraini activists of their citizenship, accusing them of involvement in a purported terror attack.

Europe
New Schengen border control rules come into force: EU
[PRESSTV] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
says new rules have taken effect to strengthen the Schengen Information System (SIS) in order to close "a critical security gap" among the bloc's member states.

The rules, adopted earlier this year, came into force on Friday to "help border guards to better monitor who is crossing the EU's borders," according to a statement by the European Commission.

The rules, proposed in December 2016, will strengthen Europe's most widely used security and border management database.

"The upgraded database, according to the statement, will also "support police and law enforcement in capturing dangerous criminals and terrorists; and offer greater protection for missing children and vulnerable adults, in line with the new data protection rules."

Europe's Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos explains that the rules are helping close "a critical security gap today in the EU."

"Member States will have an obligation to introduce terrorism alerts into the reinforced Schengen Information System," he said. "Anyone posing a threat should not go unnoticed anymore."

The system will also be alerted for illegal residents in the Schengen area; and will speed up the process for the return of these refugees to the required country.

Boat with 311 migrants docks in Spain after spending Christmas at sea
More about this story from yesterday.
[DAWN] A charity rescue vessel carrying 311 mainly African migrants colonists plucked off Libya docked in Spain on Friday, ending a traumatic journey which saw them spend Christmas at sea and several European nations denying the ship entry.

The migrants colonists cheered and applauded as the vessel docked in the port of Crinavis near the southern city of Algeciras and Proactiva Open Arms, the Spanish charity which runs the Open Arms vessel carrying them, feted the arrival with a "Mission accomplished" tweet.

The migrants colonists come from 19 different countries, including Somalia, Syria and the Ivory Coast. More than a third of them, 139, are minors. By early afternoon all of the migrants colonists had disembarked from the boat and received clothes and food, as well as medical tests if required, from Red Thingy officials. Women and children left the boat first.

"They are in good health in general," said Inigo Vila, who is in charge of emergencies for the Red Thingy in Spain. Police will identify the migrants colonists before moving them to shelters.

The migrants colonists were rescued on Dec 21 from three vessels but were denied entry by Italia and Malta. Libya, La Belle France and Tunisia did not respond to Proactiva Open Arms’ requests for permission to dock, Madrid said.

On Saturday, a newborn baby and his mother were helicoptered from the boat to Malta, while a 14-year-old suffering from a serious skin infection was taken to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

#2  What is this neocon warmongering?

The whole point of Turkey being in NATO is so that we can flank Russia and present them with two avenues of invasion. This reads like a temper tantrum. Which I've found educated people are all too frequently prone to engage in.

#6  The home of the Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan al-Muslimun) is not in Egypt. Nor is it in Britain. Or Qatar. Its home is in Ankara and has been over the last decade. Ankara funds Hamas, which is a Brotherhood charter, and it funds the enemies of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and of course, Israel. I sense the American military leadership supports Turkey because it fears without it there will begin the fracturing of NATO, and a pillar of the Western defense network will be lost. Realistically, if NATO depends in any way on Turkey, it is lost. Ineluctably lost.

#11  Herb, its time to update your knowledge base regarding Turkey. Neocon warmongering? What sort of stupidity is that you're spewing. Look at whats goin gon in Turkey. Go back to the original start of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the denial of entry to the 3rd ID. The clandestine support ofr ISIS, and the overt support for the Muslim Brotherhood. The catering to and use of Islamic Fundamentalism by Erdogan. The fake "coup" that allowed him to decimate the secular military, and imprison anyone politically inconvenient for him.

Wake up Herb. Its not 1987 anymore. Turkey is noot our firend. And they are of absolutely no use "flanking" Russia in the current military and political setup. They are becoming a client of Russia - where have you been? Did you not notice the purchase of S-400? Or the use by Turkey of "refugees" as a destabilizing force in south central Europe?

The prosecutor's office said it was investigating The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

's Fox Haber channel's Fatih Portakal for "openly inciting others to commit a crime" after the journalist speculated whether Turks could protest like those in the "Yellow Vest" movement in La Belle France, Hurriyet and Milliyet dailies said.

"Come on, let's have a peaceful protest, a protest against ... rising natural gas fees. Come on, let's do it. Would we be able to do it?" the journalist who has over six million followers on Twitter asked.

"For the love of God, tell me how many people would come out?" Portakal demanded as he speculated about the impact of Turks' fears of protesting in a news programme on December 10.

During anti-government protests in 2013, Erdogan was criticised for the police's heavy-handed crackdown against demonstrators.

Portakal's comments were interpreted by Ottoman Turkish officials as a call for protests as the country is suffering high inflation. Consumer prices reached over 25 percent in October before falling to 21.62 percent in November.

Led by Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim, the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI, formerly the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, or SCIRII, pronounced Scarey)) is not nearly as supreme as it makes out to be. The al-Hakim family business is merely another one of political parties, this one Shiite and with its power base in the south of the country. The Iranian government sponsored the party's creation in 1982 during the Iran-Iraq war after the leading Iraqi Islamist group was weakened by a government crackdown. Designed as an umbrella organization to unite Iraqi Shi'a groups, the party supports Islamic government controlled by holy men. In post-Saddam Iraq ISCI has worked closely with other Shi'a organizations to provide social services and humanitarian aid. Though accused of receiving money and weapons from Iran, ISCI leaders maintain that the party is committed to democracy and peaceful cooperation. The Badr Brigade initially acted as ISCI's armed wing but later to split to form the independent Badr Organization., said on Saturday that Washington’s main strategy in Iraq has been to make the Arab country dependent on American military presence by keeping militancy alive in parts of the Iraqi territory.

Speaking to the Iranian television, Hamoudi said many ISIS snuffies fled to Syria after being defeated in Iraq over the past years. However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
he said, the snuffies are mulling a comeback to Iraq with the help of the US after they lost most of their positions in Syria.

Saudis give $50 million to cash-strapped UN agency for Palestinian refugees
[IsraelTimes] UNRWA thanks Riyadh for ’very generous and crucial’ donation as it works to overcome US aid cuts that caused its ’worst financial crisis ever’.

Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
has completed a $50 million donation to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
agency for Paleostine refugees, the organization’s leader said Friday, amid a funding shortfall following the US decision to cut all financial aid.

Pierre Krahenbuhl, commissioner-general of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Paleostine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, signed an agreement to finalize the transfer of Saudi funds during a visit to the Gulf kingdom.

The agency said the donation was the "fulfillment of the pledge" made by King Salman
...either the largest species of Pacific salmon or the current Sheikh of the Burnin' Sands, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Lord of Most of the Arabians....
in April and brought Saudi Arabia’s total contribution for the year to $160 million.

Krahenbuhl said at the time the US cuts left UNRWA in the "worst crisis" it has ever faced, but the agency said last month it has nearly overcome the $446 million funding shortfall.

He credited the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and especially the Gulf countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
, and the United Arab Emirates with increasing support.

Parliament Warns Iran Might Get Hyperinflation By End Of March 2019
Oh dear.
[EN.RADIOFARDA] The research center of Iran's Parliament (Majles) has warned against "uncontrollable inflation" before the end of the current Iranian year in late March.

The parliament's research attributes the looming hyperinflation to "the quantity and quality of liquidity growth in recent years, fluctuations in the forex market and price rises during recent months."

According to the report, liquidity has more than tripled between 2013 and 2018, rising from 5,063,000 trillion rials to 16,720,000 trillion, adding that during the period a large part of the cash in the market consisted of various forms of travellers cheques or quasi-money so that bank notes constituted only 15% of the money in people's hands.

If we convert these figures to U.S. dollars based on the current free market rate, it would be $500 billion and $1.5 trillion respectively; but this does not mean Iranians have actually the equivalent of so much dollars. Their money is in local currency, which is not as fungible as a hard currency, such as the U.S. dollar.

The growth in liquidity means that the government has printed money to pay salaries and bills. Then what about inflation? So much liquidity is bound to lead to loss of value for the money.

Economic hardship, signified by rising prices have led to mass protests in Iran this year. This photo shows protestors in Shiraz on August 2.

Actually, there is double digit inflation approaching hyper-inflation. But so far, it has been somewhat controlled because of very high interest rates, the parliament report says, and the fact that a lot of the money in circulation is not in the form of banknotes.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
if availability of actual money increases, hyperinflation will be unavoidable, the report concludes.

The parliament's research center has suggested three solutions for the problem of liquidity and high inflation: Reducing the volume of liquidity, managing and controlling the existing liquidity level, and managing the creation of new liquidity.

The research center has advised that banks should sell their surplus assets, control high-volume banking transactions and try to stabilize the foreign exchange and gold coin markets.

Other measures suggested by the Majles research center to control inflation include taxing capital gains on foreign currency, gold coins and real estate, facilitating long-term deposits for two years or more, and reducing the interest rate on short-term deposits.

Syrian army positions, not Iranian advisers, target of Israeli airstrike: DEBKAfile
[PRESSTV] An Israeli intelligence website has refuted Tel Aviv's claims that a recent aerial raid in Syria had targeted Iranian military advisers and Hezbollah fighters, saying the attack actually hit Syrian army positions.

The DEBKAfile cited "highly credible" US military sources as saying that Israel had decided to take advantage of the chaos generated by Washington's decision to withdraw forces from Syria and Turkey’s threat to launch an operation in the Arab country's north.

Tel Aviv's purpose of the Syria offensive was to disable the Syrian military sites, they added.

On Tuesday night, Israeli F-16 warplanes fired Delilah cruise missiles from Lebanon's air space into Syria followed by similar air raids near Damascus by F-35 stealth fighter jets.

The second phase of the attack came after the F-16 missiles failed to reach their targets, DEBKAfile reported.

Russia's Defense Ministry said Wednesday that Syrian air defenses had destroyed 14 of 16 Israeli missiles launched against unspecified targets near Damascus by six Israeli F-16s.

Iran condemns terror attack on Vietnamese tourists in Egypt
[PRESSTV] Iranian Foreign Ministry has condemned as "heinous and deplorable" a deadly terrorist attack on foreign tourists visiting an Egyptian historic site.

Foreign Ministry front man Bahram Qassemi said on Saturday that the attack on Vietnamese tourists visiting Egypt’s famous Giza pyramids was a blind act of terror which should be condemned.

"Targeting innocent men and women who have arrived in country for sightseeing is heinous and deplorable," said Qassemi in a statement published on the Ministry’s website.

The Iranian official also expressed his sympathy with the families of the Vietnamese victims as well as the government and people of Vietnam.

US commanders recommend allowing YPG to keep weapons
[Rudaw] The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) should be allowed to keep weapons delivered to them by the US during the ISIS war in Syria, recommend US commanders asked to prepare a plan for the announced withdrawal from the country.

Three of four officials who talked to Rooters on condition of anonymity said that these recommendations were part of a US military’s withdrawal draft plan.

The Pentagon is yet to approve these recommendations which might anger its NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
ally in the region, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, which sees the Kurdish group as a terrorist organization and an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The US president’s sudden decision to withdraw troops from Syria emboldened governments such as Damascus and Ankara to talk of filling the vacuum militarily.

Turkey has threatened to drive out Kurdish fighters from northern Syria, including Manbij.

Pentagon believes it’s too early to comment on the matter.

"Planning is ongoing, and focused on executing a deliberate and controlled withdrawal of forces while taking all measures possible to ensure our troops’ safety," Pentagon spokesperson Commander Sean Robertson told Rooters.

UNIFIL confirms tunnel filled with cement by IDF crossed border, broke UN rules
That’s nice. Will any action come of this, or will it be nothing, as usual?
[IsraelTimes] Peacekeepers say passage dug from inside Lebanese concrete factory, which Israel says was a Hezbollah attack tunnel, violated resolution that ended 2006 war

United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
peacekeeping forces on the Israeli-Lebanese border on Saturday confirmed that a tunnel filled up and destroyed by the Israeli army a day earlier had crossed the border into the Jewish state and was in "violation of resolution 1701," the UN decision that ended 2006’s Second Leb War.

It was the third such tunnel that UNIFIL forces confirmed crossed over the Blue Line, which demarcates the internationally recognized border, out of five that the Israel Defense Forces have so far said they have uncovered. UNIFIL has not confirmed Israel’s allegations they were dug by Hezbollah.

The IDF on Friday said it poured an unspecified "liquid" into the underground passage to block it, and aired footage of people in the southern Lebanese village of Kafr Kila reacting to an overflow of viscous material, that some media reports said was cement.

UNIFIL’s statement on Saturday said that the tunnel opening in Kafr Kila had been inside a cement factory, indicating that the material could have been a mixture of both substances.

"In the course of the ongoing investigation into the presence of tunnels along the Blue Line, UNIFIL together with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) surveyed the premises of an old concrete factory in the southern part of [Kafr Kila], after UNIFIL had observed liquified cement flowing out from the building within this facility," the peacekeepers said.

"The liquid overflowing on the Lebanese side had been injected by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) through a shaft drilled on their end of a tunnel that UNIFIL had previously independently confirmed to be crossing the Blue Line in the same general area. Based on this observation, UNIFIL can confirm that the old concrete factory in [the village] has an opening to the tunnel, which is crossing the Blue Line."

UNIFIL it was working with the Lebanese army to address the violation of the 2006 ceasefire agreement.

UNIFIL added that it had been informed by the IDF on Wednesday of another operation to destroy a tunnel near the Lebanese village of Ayta ash Shab, but that it had not been reported to UN forces prior to its destruction. "Therefore, it’s existence has not been independently verified by UNIFIL."

The next day "UNIFIL conducted a post-blast assessment and observed a crater in the area."
