US, UAE missed chance to capture Taliban leader
[Al Jazeera] The US government and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) missed an opportunity to capture the late leader of the Afghan Taliban
...Arabic for students...
when he visited Dubai, a news report said.

Former Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor reportedly visited the Gulf emirate for fundraising a few months before his liquidation in May 2016, in a US air raid in Pakistain, the Washington Post reported.

In an investigation published on Saturday, the Post said US intelligence officials became aware of Mansoor's movements in Dubai and discussed what to do about him.

Before a decision was made, he left for Iran, the newspaper reported.

Then US President Barack Obama
I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody...
's national security adviser, Susan Rice, requested his plane to be turned around, but Emirati authorities said it was too late, it said.

From Iran, Mansoor travelled to Pakistain where the Americans were again aware of his whereabouts, and killed him in a drone attack.

Egypt hosts conference for reconstruction of devastated areas in Iraq
Good luck guys.
Cairo (Iraqinews.com) ‐ Egypt is scheduled to host on Sunday an exhibit and conference in support of Iraq’s reconstruction under the auspices of the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
According to Alforat News, Iraqi Ambassador in Cairo Habib al-Sadr welcomed the promising investments scheduled to be offered at the exhibit "after the great victory the country achieved over the terrorist Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group."

Sadr stressed that his country will put forward about 212 investment opportunities at the gathering. He further extended his thanks to the Egyptian companies for their contributions to reconstruct Iraq and transfer their successful expertise to the Iraqi market.

"Iraq is entering a new phase characterized by security stability, blooming economy and social harmony," he said, adding that Iraq, under these circumstances, is ready to make use of its natural resources and youth capabilities to start the reconstruction process.

Kuwait hosted an international donors conference for the reconstruction of Iraq after the damage sustained during the war against Islamic State snuffies since 2014. At the end of the conference, Iraq had acquired nearly USD30 billion, much less than a previously projected USD100 billion.

The war against IS had displaced nearly five million people both inside and outside the country, and dealt a severe damage to the country’s infrastructure.

Debate reemerges in Libya over fate of Qaddafi’s corpse
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Debate erupted once again in Libya over the fate of the corpse of late leader Muammar al-Qadaffy.

Former Libyan Ambassador to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Mohammed Saeed al-Qashat told Russia’s Sputnik news agency that the location of his grave is not known.

His corpse was handed over to the Misrata brigades after his death in 2011 and placed inside a mortuary freezer for a week. It was then washed and prayers were performed. Afterwards, nothing is known of its fate, he said.

Despite demands made by some of his relatives and Libyan tribal leaders, the Misrata brigades did not disclose the location of the burial and no Libyan side has been able to obtain information on the matter, he continued.

After his death, Libyan authorities planned to bury Qadaffy in an undisclosed location. His Gaddafa tribe demanded the national transition council, which was ruling the country at the time, to hand over the corpse to it.

The graves of the Qadaffy family in Sirte have been vandalized in the past.

An elder of the Qadaffy tribe expressed to Asharq al-Awsat the family’s anger at bringing up the fate of Qadaffy’s corpse once again.

He said, on condition of anonymity, that at the time of his death, Qadaffy’s relatives demanded from head of the national transition council, Mustafa Abduljalil, that his corpse be handed over to them.

He was however powerless and could not fulfill their demand, he added.

Nigerian Town Awaits Release of Christian Girl Held by Boko Haram
Probably nothing will come of this, but it’s nice that they care about a little Christian girl.
[AnNahar] Residents of the Nigerian town of Dapchi were hoping for the release of the last schoolgirl kidnapped by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, following encouraging indications from the authorities after the Death Eaters returned more than 100 youngsters they had seized.

Her released schoolmates said the girl, Leah Sharibu, is a Christian who remained in captivity because she refused to convert to Islam.

"There is so much expectation in the town following the news that the last remaining girl will be released," Kachalla Bukar, father of one of the schoolgirls recently freed, told AFP late Saturday by phone from the town in the northeastern state of Yobe.

"We were told she was on her way but she has not yet been brought," said Kachalla, who is the front man of the kidnapped schoolgirls' parents union.

The authorities had asked shopkeepers to close Saturday afternoon in anticipation of her arrival.

National police chief Ibrahim Idris told news hounds Saturday in Maiduguri, capital of neighboring Borno State, the girl "may be released today".

Idris said he canceled a visit to Dapchi to avoid any "security hitch" in the town before Leah's arrival, without providing further details.

In all, 105 of the 111 schoolgirls kidnapped on February 19 from their boarding school in Dapchi were released on Wednesday, raising questions about possible ransom payments.

They were brought back by members of Boko Haram in nine trucks and dropped by the school.

- 'High spirits' -
According to witnesses contacted by AFP, the girls were held on an island on Lake Chad, which is a known stronghold for fighters loyal to Boko Haram factional leader Abu Mus'ab al-Barnawi.
Oh? Good to know where to send any spare UAVs we might have...
Five of the girls died in captivity, according to their colleagues.

On Saturday, soldiers deployed in Dapchi disappeared from the town's checkpoints, raising hopes for Leah's imminent release.

"We believe the news of the girl's release is true because the body language of the security personnel, police and military, indicates the girl is on her way home," said resident Tijjani Goni.

"The town is in high spirits and full of anticipation," Goni said.

"The sudden withdrawal of soldiers from checkpoints is a clear sign the girl is coming," said fellow Dapchi resident Sanda Masida.

President Muhammadu Buhari vowed on Twitter to do "everything in our power to bring Leah back safely."

The Dapchi kidnapping revived painful memories in Nigeria of the April 2014 abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok, a town also in the northeast, which caused global outrage.

While some of the Chibok girls have been freed in exchange for ransom and the release of top Boko Haram commanders, a total of 112 remain in captivity.

Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted schools giving a so-called Western education in the mainly-Moslem region as part of an insurgency that has killed at least 20,000 people and displaced more than 2.6 million since 2009.

While a 2015 offensive launched by Buhari successfully reclaimed swathes of territory back from the jihadists in Nigeria, the group still stages deadly attacks on both military targets and civilians.

Nigeria in talks with Boko Haram about a possible ceasefire

about a possible ceasefire and the talks have gone on for some time, the information minister said on Sunday.

"Unknown to many, we have been in wider cessation-of-hostility talks with the gunnies for some time now," said Lai Mohammed in a statement emailed to Rooters about the background to the release on Wednesday of more than 100 schoolgirls that the group kidnapped last month.

Nigerian police: Boko Haram to free one more kidnapped girl
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Nigeria’s police chief says another girl who was kidnapped from a school in Dapchi last month is being brought back by her kidnappers.

Police Inspector General Muhammed Abubakar said on Saturday that he canceled a trip to Dapchi to avoid interfering with the release. He said too much security presence could sabotage the efforts. He did not say when she would be released.

The girl’s father, Nathan Sharibu, confirmed to The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that he heard she was on her way to Dapchi.

The turban group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
stormed Dapchi on February 19, abducting 111 schoolgirls. Boko Haram released 105 on Wednesday after negotiations. This one girl remained a prisoner because she is Christian and refused to convert to Islam.

Five others are unaccounted for and are presumed to have died.

Seattle man on ‘jihad’ pleads guilty to murder in New Jersey, admits to 3 other homicides in King County
From early this month, but now we can close the books on a story we’ve been following since 2014.
[SeattleTimes] In a courtroom nearly 3,000 miles from Seattle, Ali Muhammad Brown pleaded guilty on Tuesday to killing a college student in New Jersey and admitted he fatally shot three men in the Seattle area in spring 2014 as part of an overarching plan to retaliate against the U.S. for military actions in the Middle East.

His admission of guilt in connection with the deaths of Leroy Henderson in Skyway and Dwone Anderson-Young and Ahmed Said in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood won’t impact the three aggravated first-degree murder charges filed against him in King County Superior Court, said Mark Larson, the county’s chief criminal deputy prosecutor.

Brown, who pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including murder, robbery and terrorism in New Jersey’s Essex County, is currently serving a 35-year sentence for a New Jersey armed robbery committed before Brown killed 19-year-old Brandon Tevlin outside Newark.

India-Pakistan
Fazl says world powers want to keep religious parties away from power
[DAWN] The agenda of world powers is to keep religious parties away from power in Pakistain.

This was stated by Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
, chief of his own faction of the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
-Fazl (JUI-F) while speaking at a big public gathering the party called ’Babul Islam Sindh conference’ held at the SRTC ground here on Friday night.

The maulana, who is also president of the recently reactivated religious alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, criticised the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Pakistain’s politics. He alleged that people from NGOs were being sent to parliament through a well-planned conspiracy only to impose Western culture on the country.

He further said that it was the agenda of the United States to humiliate youngsters studying in madressahs so they may react [violently] and use their reaction as a pretext to close down the religious schools. He said selected people ‐ nawabs, khans and feudals ‐ were being imposed on the people as rulers. However,
the man who has no enemies isn't anybody and has never done anything...
he added, the JUI-F would stand in the way of such people.

Friday sermons to be delivered on select topics, following approval
[DAWN] Friday sermons will now be delivered after they have been approved by the capital administration, which will also monitor them, officials said on Saturday.

The administration had initially decided to issue written sermons to mosques and imambargahs in the city, they said. Scholars from various sectors and administrators of places of worship were called for a meeting with the capital administration in this regard.

The idea was largely opposed by scholars, administrators and prayer leaders, officials said, as a number of mosques and imambargahs are not supervised by the administration but by the Auqaf department.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
it was later decided that sermons would only be delivered on matters selected by the administration, which were shared with the scholars and prayer leaders, who agreed.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Turkey to target new town in Syria operation: Erdogan
[AlAhram] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Sunday said the northern Syrian town of Tal Rifaat would be the next target of its cross-border campaign after the capture of Afrin from Syrian Kurdish militia.

"God willing, we will ensure this operation achieves its goal after taking control of Tal Rifaat in a short period of time," President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
said in the Black Sea city of Trabzon.

Afrin's capture is seen as a major step forwards for Turkey as it seeks to bolster control along its border in northern Syria.

Erdogan has repeatedly suggested that the Ottoman Turkish campaign in Syria could now extend up to Qamishli -- the most easterly Syrian town held by the YPG before the Iraqi border.

Tal Rifaat lies in a strategic area right in the middle between the city of Afrin and the town of Marea -- which is a key rebel-held town to the east.

Taking it could connect rebel territory between Afrin and Marea.

Tens of thousands of people fleeing the Afrin offensive have travelled to Tal Rifaat, which is also very close to the key Minnigh airport, also held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) dominated by the YPG.

Tal Rifaat has changed hands several times in Syria's war. The SDF captured it from Syrian rebels in February 2016, despite Turkey's efforts to keep them back.

Syria accuses Israel of stealing Jewish artifacts from Damascus
[IsraelTimes] UN ambassador Bashar Jaafari says religious books smuggled from Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue in Jobar to New York via Istanbul

Syria has accused Israel of stealing ancient and valuable Jewish artifacts from a historic synagogue in Damascus.

In an official complaint filed with the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Security Council last week, Syria accused Israel of smuggling religious books and other artifacts from the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue, in cooperation with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and with terrorist groups operating in the area.

The Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue, located in the Jobar district of Damascus, is believed to be built on the spot where the prophet Elijah is thought to have hid in a cave and in the place where Elijah is said to have anointed the prophet Elisha.

Jobar was home to a large Jewish community for hundreds of years, but by the mid-19th century, only a few families remained.

The synagogue was said to have been mostly destroyed in mortar attacks during a May 2014 battle between troops loyal to Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
and rebel troops. The synagogue reportedly was looted following the battle

According to a plaque on the building, the synagogue dates from 720 BCE.

Syria’s Ambassador to the UN Bashar Jaafari wrote in the letter of what he called "credible evidence" that "the terrorist groups that are active in the area of Jobar, near Damascus, cooperated with the Ottoman Turkish and Israeli intelligence services to loot artifacts and manuscripts from the ancient synagogue there."

The letter continued: "The items were then smuggled through local and foreign intermediaries to Istanbul, where they were received by antiquities experts who certified that they were extremely valuable antique objects. The items were subsequently smuggled to New York."

Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny called Syria’s accusations: "Another attempt by the Syrian regime to draw attention away from the horrible atrocities it commits against its own people."

"While the Assad regime continues mercilessly slaughtering innocent civilians and children, Israel continues giving humanitarian aid to Syrian residents and treating Syrian maimed that arrive at its doorstep," Danon also said.

Lebanese PM Hariri Leads Election Campaign Against Hezbollah
[AAWSAT] Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah

successfully rallied people behind him after targeting in his speech Hezbollah, making it clear that voters have a choice to make between two very different political atmospheres.

"The choice in the elections will be easy: stability, security, economic drive and jobs, or God forbid, economic and social nightmares," Hariri told the people of Akkar.

Hariri’s speech comes at a time when the national registry for electoral lists is almost complete, in light of partisan alliances formed nationwide.

The deadline for submitting electoral lists is March 25, announced the Interior Ministry.

"This election, with all due respect to all candidates, and all lists, is actually a confrontation between two lines, two approaches and two wills. Between a line that wants to protect Beirut’s political, national, Arab and Beiruti identity, and a line that wants to put its hand on Beirut’s decision and identity," Hariri said in a speech during a ceremony held by the Future Movement at the premier’s Downtown Beirut residence to announce the electoral list of the Beirut-II district.

Called "The Future Is for Beirut," the 11-member list includes, among others, Hariri, former Prime Minister Tammam Salam and Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk.

After announcing an electoral list he heads in Beirut, Hariri also announced his bloc’s electoral list in Akkar.

Prime Minister Hariri patronized Saturday afternoon the Future Movement's organized ceremony in Khreibet el-Jindi in Akkar to announce "The Future Is for Akkar" electoral list.
