Afghanistan
Lower-level Taliban reintegrating in Afghanistan in growing numbers --
(KUNA) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday said she was increasingly convinced that many of the lower-level Taliban are, in increasing numbers, laying down their arms and coming back into Afghan society.
Funny how she believes General Petraeus, now he's working for her people instead of the other side. Still, any port in a storm, I s'pose.
During an ABC interview from Brussels, Clinton noted that such Taliban are young men who went to fight for the Taliban because they got paid more than they could make anywhere else.

Asked about reports that Taliban leaders will be allowed to take part in peace talks in Afghanistan, Clinton noted that for more than a year, U.S. officials have said they were willing to support reintegration -- people on the battlefield coming off and going back into their society -- and reconciliation, a political process to work out terms of peace with those who had led the Taliban.

The conditions were that these individuals had to renounce violence, lay down their arms, renounce al-Qaeda and be willing to abide by the laws and constitution of Afghanistan, she noted.

But it is very early in the process, Clinton said.

Meanwhile, U.S. military troops, along with NATO and International Security Assistance Force troops, are each day hunting down and killing Taliban who are killing Afghans and allied soldiers, "so this is at the real beginning of what process might unfold," she said. U.S. General David Petraeus, the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, as well as other military leaders, believe that there will be places in Afghanistan that can be transitioned over to Afghan control, Clinton said.

Afghan security forces have made significant progress, but "are not where they need to be yet, and they know that," she said. But in certain areas like Kabul, where they are taking a much greater role in defending the capital city, and some of the other provinces where they have good relations with local leaders, "I think that there can be transitions that do start to occur," she added.

U.S. military and civilian leaders "are very cautious about that," Clinton said. "They want to make sure that it is done right." U.S. officials "want to put the responsibility on the Afghans themselves to begin showing that they will stand and fight and defend their country against the threat of the Taliban," she said.

In neighboring Pakistain, U.S. officials are pressing "very hard" that the Pak government do more with its military and intelligence forces to go after those segments of the Pakistain Taliban network that are connected with al Qaeda and crossing into Afghanistan, "going after our military as well as Afghan targets," Clinton said. "And we are going to keep pressing, because we think there is no way to divide this threat."
I think it's NPR that is asking Pakistanis why they hate America. I think they're asking the wrong people the wrong question.

#3  Conveniently NOT mentioned is the fact these people are paid a stipend by the gov't (OUR GOV'T) for "laying down their arms" and making the pledge. The so called "reintegration" has become a seasonal ritual for the Taliban. The money helps carry them through the harsh winter. In the early Spring, they take up arms once again against the infidel.

No role for Mullah Omar in future of Afghanistan -- US
(KUNA) -- The United States affirmed on Thursday that Mullah Omar, the Taliban leader, has no role to play in the future of Afghanistan.
"No, dude, you don't get to surrender. Just keep looking up in the sky for your own personal Predator missile to kiss you... or perhaps the Afghan Special Forces will find you first. I've heard a rumour the Ghurkas are kinder..."
Philip Crowley, U.S. State Department front man, told news hounds, "We recognize Mullah Omar's responsibility and support given to bin Laden and the 9/11 plot. We cannot imagine him playing a constructive role in the future of Afghanistan." Crowley said the U.S. strategy has both "a military and a civilian component, and "we recognize that, not always, but insurgencies frequently are resolved not by military means alone, but a combination of military means and a viable political process." The United States is supporting the government of Afghanistan in "pursuing reconciliation with those elements that are currently part of the insurgency," Crowley said, and the U.S. will "continue to support this Afghan-led process in any way we can." Crowley pointed to five major criteria for participation in the reconciliation process that is shared by the United States, the international community and the government of Afghanistan, "including renouncing violence; you know, severing any links with al Qaeda or its affiliates; and fully supporting the Afghan constitution, including rights for men and women in Afghanistan." "Anyone who supports those criteria, in our view, can have and can play a role in the future of Afghanistan," he said.
The State Department is awfully enthusiastic about this. I wonder if this is Billary's revenge on President Obama?

US downplays chances of Taliban peace talks
[Al Arabiya] The United States on Thursday played down expectations over reconciliation talks between the Afghan government and Taliban faceless myrmidons but said it remained open to supporting Kabul's efforts, as the NATO chief said that the alliance was ready to support peace talks with Taliban without halting military operations against them.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the United States was in "close consultations" with President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai "so we know what they're doing and they know what we're doing and they understand what our requirements are."

"And frankly we share with them what we think will be in their best interest as the process goes along," Gates told news hounds after a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels.

Peace talks

Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Karzai this month launched the High Council for Peace, the latest effort to persuade the Taliban and other faceless myrmidons to negotiate an end to the war which has entered its 10th year.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sought to downplay expectations, saying it was a "long term" process.

The reintegration of former faceless myrmidons was "accelerating" as "more and more" fighters were seeking a way out.

The United States has set "red lines" for the reconciliation effort, demanding that former fighters renounce violence, their weapons and their allegiance to al-Qaeda and abide by the laws of Afghanistan, she said.

"On the reconciliation front, this is a much more complex effort that is just beginning," she said.

"We support what the Afghans are doing. We obviously have sought and obtained transparency and we have an understanding of their goals and objectives," Clinton said.

She added: "Obviously we have for more than a year supported this kind of effort, but the timing is everything and the sincerity of the outreach is everything.

"And so we're not yet ready to make any judgments about whether or not any of this will bear fruit on the reconciliation front, while we continue to see fighters coming off the battlefield in the reintegration front."

Military operations

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, meanwhile, said the alliance was ready to support possible peace talks with the Taliban, but ruled out halting military operations against the Afghan insurgency.

While the NATO-led force was willing to provide "practical assistance" for reconciliation efforts, "we should continue our military operations" against the Taliban, Rasmussen told a news conference.

Talks with the faceless myrmidons must be led by the Afghan government "but our position is if we can facilitate this process through practical assistance then why not?" said the NATO secretary general, without providing further details.

Afghan officials Thursday requested NATO's support in clearing the way for a new peace initiative with the Taliban, including by halting military operations in areas where reconciliation talks could take place.

Asked if NATO was ready to meet Kabul's request, Rasmussen said: "No, I think we should continue our military operations. I do believe the best way to facilitate reconciliation and reintegration is to keep up the military pressure on the Taliban."

In Afghanistan, senior council member Mahsoom Stanikzai said NATO's support for the effort was "essential".

He said halting military activities where beturbanned goons were holding talks, reducing civilian casualties in military operations and convincing Afghans that "NATO is not here to occupy" Afghanistan were all vital to the process.

Since U.S. President Barack B.O. Obama took office last year, the U.S. administration has been more open to possible talks, though it has said that any settlement would require the faceless myrmidons to lay down their arms, renounce ties to al-Qaeda and support the country's constitution.

The faceless myrmidons have always publicly denied that they are in talks.

Abyei vote in Sudan 'to be delayed'
[Al Jazeera] A vote on whether the contested Sudanese oil district of Abyei should remain part of the north or join the south can no longer go ahead on time, a senior official in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, has said.
Golly, what a surprise.
"It is very clear that right now it is not possible to have the Abyei referendum on 9 Jan 2011," Didiri Mohammad Ahmad, a member of Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP), told news hounds on Thursday.

"We all agree that this is no longer practical. We agreed that the next talks we will try to look for other alternatives."

Jalal Yousuf Al-Digair, Sudan's minister of international co-operation, told the same news conference that the government would be open to a proposal to delay the referendum by a few months.

However,
The infamous However...
the area's administrator responded by saying that local residents in the region will not accept a delay and may hold their own vote without the government.

"A delayed vote is unacceptable. The people of Abyei are still holding out for the referendum to be held on Januart 9," Deng Arop Kuol, a member of south Sudan's dominant Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), told the Rooters news agency.

"If the government does not give them that option we can have a self-run referendum."

Atem Garang, a senior SPLM leader, told Al Jazeera that there was no reason to delay the vote.

"Abyei protocols is very clear, local officials in Abyei itself have to identify who the residents are, and who is eligible to vote," he said.

"Everything is in its place, and there is no justification for a delay."

Al Jazeera's Hassan Ibrahim added that according to the protocol introduced in 2009, all residents of Abyei are eligible to vote, including the Messiriya nomadic herders.

"However,
The infamous However...
the SPLM says that residents who spend more than seven months in the area are eligible to vote, and this violates the protocol," he said.

Growing tensions

The residents of Abyei region were promised a vote on whether to stay with the north or join south Sudan as part of a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war.

North and south Sudan have clashed in the area since the signing of the peace deal.

The country's main political parties, who both claim the area, remain at loggerheads over how to organise the vote and analysts have warned growing tensions over the plebiscite could re-ignite conflict.

The latest round of negotiations between the parties, attended by Scott Gration, the envoy to Sudan, ended in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on Tuesday without agreement.

The Abyei vote is scheduled for the same day as southerners are due to vote on whether to stay part of Sudan or declare independence.

Man nabbed over bomb threat
[Straits Times] PARIS police say a 22-year-old man has been detained in a probe into several recent bomb threats at crowded city sites.
Good. Congratulations to his captors!
The Paris police headquarters said on Thursday that after his arrest the day before the man had admitted calling in the false alerts. The man's name was not released.
The French police are not constrained by the same ROE as American police. French criminals discover this, if they've forgotten.
The arrest was linked to a probe into bomb threats at sites including the Galeries Lafayette department store, the Montparnasse train station and the Hotel-Dieu hospital.

French officials have stepped up terrorism vigilance in recent weeks.

The office for Paris regional security says it has received 11 phoned-in bomb or other threats so far this month, compared to one in all of October last year.

No "apology" offered over cartoons: Denmark
[Al Arabiya] Denmark's Minister of Foreign Affairs Lene Espersen did not offer any apologies to the Mohammedan world about the indecent cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammed when she met Egypt's top imam in Cairo, the Danish official TV said on Thursday.

The top diplomat was received by the Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar Dr Ahmed al-Tayyeb during her visit to Cairo. Alarabiya.net has published the news about the Danish top diplomat offering her apologies on Wednesday, which caused an uproar in Denmark.

Al-Azhar is regarded by Mohammedans as the world's center of Sunni Islam.

A Danish government official denied the news on the official TV and said that Espersen never apologized although the top holy man has asked her for that. The TV showed the report published by Al Arabiya website, on which the official commented.

"There was no word of apology uttered by Espersen during the meeting," the Danish official remarked.

The TV quoted Espersen denying offering any apologies to al-Azhar imam over the cartoons.

Al-Azhar front man Dr Mohamed Refaa al-Tahtawi told alarabiya.net that the translator had misinterpreted the Danish minister's speech. He said that the translator interpreted her word as "apology" instead of "excuse" and that's what caused the misunderstanding in the Arab and international mass media.

"Al-Azhar will issue a statement on this regard on Saturday," he added.

#6  Some background from De Telegraaf(Google Translation)
Evidenced by internal e-mail correspondence from 2008 between the Public Prosecutor-General in The Hague (the top of the public prosecutor) and the public prosecutor in Amsterdam.

The information is spicy, because in our country's justice minister habitually keep the necessary distance to prevent the prosecution is exposed to changing political influences. In addition, with this information, the role of Hirsch Ballin as one of the fiercest opponents CDA-tolerance support Wilders' PVV in a different light.

Analysis On March 14, 2008 mailed to the prosecutor-general and another on the Amsterdam prosecutor's opinion of Professor Rick Lawson, Professor of European Law at the University of Leiden. Lawson was asked by the Public mapping or prosecution of Wilders chance. On the last page of his ten edges Lawson component analysis concludes that it "justified to prosecute Wilders.

This opinion was received with cheers Both offices are established by the mail traffic. "What a very good piece !!!!' And: "Monday is a meeting with the Minister of Justice in this opinion. We are now trying with might and possible input to Harm Brouwer (OM boss, ed) to provide for this conversation. Everything is welcome.

Wilders' lawyer Mr. Bram Moszkowicz is stunned by the internal information. "This shows not only that at the highest ministerial level on the possible prosecution of my client's voice, but also that there has been substantive political involvement in the decision to prosecute."

TO: All customary Despite Lawson's analysis prosecutor decided not to prosecute Wilders. To the court later ordered to do so.

According to a spokeswoman OM is nothing surprising about the involvement of Hirsch Ballin. "It's very common for the business with a social impact reviews and exchange views with the minister. He is politically responsible for the Prosecutor and the Court is regularly called to explain why things may or may not be prosecuted. Even if it goes to a prominent politician. The law provided that if the Minister disagrees with the prosecution, he may give a clue how to do otherwise, which in this case has not happened. "

Pastor Terry Jones to receive free car for not burning Korans
THE controversial pastor who incited international outrage over a threat to burn copies of the Koran on the ninth anniversary of 9/11 terror attacks will receive a new car for calling off the demonstration.

New Jersey car dealer, and former New York Giants centre, Brad Benson made a promotional radio offer at the height of the controversy to give Terry Jones a brand new Hyundai if he canceled the burn.

Jones, who abandoned the public burning on the eve of the September 11 anniversary following pressure from President Obama and Defence Secretary Gates, came to collect on the car dealer's offer earlier this month.

David Cantin, general manager at Brad Benson Hyundai, says Pastor Jones called the dealership about ten days ago to arrange delivery of the vehicle.

"He lived up to his end of the bargain, and we're living up to our end," Mr Cantin said.

He added Pastor Jones would receive a 2011 Hyundai Accent, expected for delivery by the end of next week. The listing price for a new Accent starts at $US13,329.

'Pakistan plans to target militants in North Waziristan'
[Dawn] US Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said the Pak military has pledged to go after forces of Evil that the US wants targeted in the North Wazoo tribal region.

Mullen said Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani has given assurances that he will mount an offensive in the tribal region along the Afghan border.

"He has committed to me to go into North Wazoo and to root out these hard boyz as well," Mullen reportedly said in an interview on Bloomberg Television's "Conversations with Judy Woodruff" to be broadcast this weekend.

"He clearly knows what our priorities are...North Wazoo is the epicentre of terrorism," Mullen said.

"It's where al-Qaeda lives."

He further said that the objective was to defeat al-Qaeda and ensure Afghanistan would not again become a haven for the group.

Pakistain says its army is stretched by the fight against forces of Evil in six tribal regions and a flood that inundated a fifth of the country in July.

Euro terror plot still active
[Straits Times] THE US State Department's counterterrorism coordinator said on Thursday that an alleged European terror plot remains active and that he saw no reason to rescind a travel alert.

Earlier this month, the State Department advised American citizens living or traveling in Europe to take more precautions about their personal security following reports that gun-hung tough guys may be plotting attacks in Europe. Concerns have centred around a plot using assault weapons on public places similar to the deadly 2008 shooting spree in Mumbai, India.

The alert is one step below a formal travel warning advising Americans not to visit Europe.

State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin told journalists in London on Thursday that the American government's position on the issue had not changed.

'We don't view the conditions as warranting us rescinding the (travel) alert,' he said.

Britain's current terror threat level remains unchanged at 'severe,' meaning an attack is highly likely.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Turks take Flotilla attack case to ICC
[Iran Press TV] The families of the victims of Israel's maritime attack on a Gazoo aid convoy in May are set to take the case to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Reports say they will file a lawsuit at the court in The Hague against Israel on Thursday.

On May 31, Israeli navy commandos stormed the Turkish-organized Gazoo Freedom Flotilla from dinghies and helicopters as the civilian fleet was in international waters.

The attack left nine Turkish muscle, including a Turkish-American teenager, dead and more than 50 others maimed onboard the six-vessel Flotilla.

In the face of widespread condemnation of the bloody onslaught, Israel defended the move by its army forces, claiming their use of deadly force was an act of "self-defense."

But a report by a fact-finding committee mandated by the UN Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) to probe the events surrounding the Flotilla attack charged Tel Aviv last month with violating international law and the human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...
of the muscle on board the convoy.

The UNCHR adopted the conclusions arrived at by the committee with 30 nations voting in favor and 15 states abstaining -- despite opposition from the United States, which became the only state to vote against the UN report.

The Human Rights Commission concluded that Israel's siege on Gazoo is illegal because of the humanitarian crisis it causes for the impoverished population living in the enclave. It also condemned the Israeli attack on the Flotilla as "brutal and disproportionate."

The Gazoo Freedom Flotilla was carrying 10,000 tons of aid supplies and 700 international muscle to the blockaded Gazoo Strip when it was attacked in the Mediterranean sea.

No. Each time, after losing the wars they started, the Arabs (and now the Turks) whine until the world problem is, the ICC has no jurisdiction here, being a voluntary rather than statutory organization, so the Turkish case is nothing more than a propaganda ploy, effective only with the ignorant and the antisemitic.

US should persuade Israel on settlements: Abbas
[Al Arabiya] Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday he expected the United States to convince Israel to halt settlement building on occupied Paleostinian land so direct peace talks can resume.

The Paleostinians called off direct peace talks with Israel just a few weeks after they began last month when a 10-month Israeli freeze on new home building in the settlements expired.

Abbas said Israel was "still putting obstacles" in the path of peace talks, singling out its construction of Jewish settlements on land where the Paleostinians aim to found a state.

But expressing a hope that this would change, he said: "Let's focus on hope and not failure."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, head of a government dominated by parties that support the settlers, has so far resisted pressure from the United States to extend the freeze. He said this week the Paleostinians should recognize Israel as a Jewish state to secure such a gesture.

Abbas, speaking at a news conference with Finnish President Tarja Halonen, reiterated the Paleostinians' long-standing rejection of that idea, which would amount to a major concession on an issue at the heart of the six-decade old conflict.

The United States launched the direct talks in Washington on Sept. 2. It wants the sides to return to negotiations.

"There is a lot of activity going on," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" in Brussels. "I'm convinced that both President Abbas and Prime Minister Netanyahu want to be the leaders that resolve this conflict."

Abbas welcomed a decision by Arab leaders on Saturday to allow the United States one month to convince Israel to halt settlement building on land it has occupied since in the 1967 Middle East war.

"If this happens, we have no objection, on the contrary, we are ready immediately to go to direct talks, starting with the issues of borders and security," Abbas said. "This is what is expected and what we hope will happen."

'Declare independent Palestinian state'
[Iran Press TV] A senior Paleostinian politician has called for an immediate declaration of an independent Paleostinian state in response to failed talks with Israel.
Why not? Biafra did it.
Swollen-bellied babies was one result of that, if I recall correctly.
Mustafa Barghouthi called on the Paleostinian Authority (PA) on Wednesday to immediately declare "an independent democratic Paleostinian state," including all the territories occupied by Israel during and after the Six-Day War in 1967 and with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital, Ma'an news agency reported.
And the next missile to come over the border, from either the West Bank or Gaza Strip, would be an act of war. Israel would then be able to respond by going to war, instead of merely arresting -- or shooting -- the perpetrators. It would certainly be easier than the current situation. Not to mention Israel wouldn't have to share sales taxes or sell power to the Palestinian nation, either.
Speaking to news hounds in Ramallah, Barghouthi proposed a set of initiatives to "surpass the intractable impasse in the so-called peace processor."

The Paleostinian National Initiative leader described the US-backed direct negotiations as "meaningless and damaging" given Israel's continued settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

He said the declaration would call on "all states, governments and international institutions to recognize the Paleostinian state and its borders immediately," and would call on the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society General Assembly to issue recognition of the state based on the UN-drawn borders of 4 June 1967.

The document would also urge the General Assembly to demand that the Israeli regime end the occupation of its land, borders, airspace, and water resources and remove all illegal settlements from Paleostinian territories.

Barghouthi further called for "punitive action against Israel should it continue its occupation of the Paleostinian state," following the declaration of the state.

The politician noted that only an international recognition of a Paleostinian state and its borders will give Paleostinians an equal footing for negotiations.

Barghouthi said the present negotiations are happening between "totally inequitable parties where Israel is effectively allowed a dominant veto power on all issues, including the agenda and terms of reference, as well as total impunity to violate international law and so many UN resolutions."

"If the international community rejects this option, it will be the death of the two-state solution and Paleostinians will be left to struggle against apartheid in one state," he warned.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Ahmadinejad meets with Nasrallah at Iran embassy in Beirut
[Haaretz] Al Manar television reported on Thursday that Iran's diminutive President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad had met with Hezbullies Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah at Iran's embassy in Beirut prior to the Iranian leader's departure from Leb.

A television image of a meeting between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hezbullies chief Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut October 14, 2010.

Images from the meeting were screened by the Hezbullies-linked television network.

According to the report, the two discussed a range of issues, and at the culmination of the meeting Nasrallah gave Ahmadinejad a gun, which he claimed had been taken from Israeli soldiers during the 2006 Second Leb War.

Nasrallah seldom emerges from his bunker, where he has been staying since the fighting between his Iranian-backed organization and the Israel Defense Forces in southern Leb in 2006.

Earlier Thursday, speaking close to Israel's northern border, Ahmadinejad praised what he called "Leb's resistance to the Jewish state" and declared that "Zionists are mortal".

Addressing thousands of cheering Hezbullies supporters in Bint Jbeil, where Hezbullies fought fierce battles with Israeli soldiers during the 2006 war, Ahmadinejad said the town symbolized Leb's defiance.

"The world should know the Zionists are mortal ... today the Lebanese nation is alive and is a role model for regional nations," the Iranian president said on the second day of a trip that highlighted the growing power of Tehran's ally Hezbullies.

Israel's Foreign Ministry said Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be wiped from the map, was bringing a message of violence and extremism and was "transforming Leb into a platform for his aggressive plans against Israel."

Bint Jbeil is just 4 km (2.5 miles) from the border and Israel's Channel 2 Television said echoes of Ahmadinejad's welcoming ceremony were audible on the Israeli side minutes before he arrived.

"I announce that Bint Jbeil is alive and is standing. The world should know that Bint Jbeil is proud and will stand against the enemies till the end," Ahmadinejad said.

He also visited Qana, where 106 Lebanese non-combatants were killed in 1996 when Israeli aircraft struck a base run by United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society peacekeepers in which villagers had sought shelter. "You are victorious and your enemies are defeated," Ahmadinejad said.

"You will stay and your enemies, who are the enemies of humanity, are on their way to demise and annihilation. You are honored and your Zionist enemies are humiliated and weak."

In a symbolic move, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose to respond to Ahmadinejad from the hall in Tel Aviv where Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, declared the creation of Israel in 1948.

"We heard today the cursing and the language of contempt from the Leb border," Netanyahu said at the Land of Israel Museum in Tel Aviv. "...We will continue to build our country and we will know very well how to defend it."

Ahmadinejad on Israeli border: "Zionists mortal"

Addressing thousands of cheering Hezbullies supporters in Bint Jbeil, scene of fierce fighting between the Islamic myrmidon Iranian-backed group and Israeli soldiers in 2006, Ahmadinejad said the town was a symbol of resistance to Israel.

The town was heavily bombed in the 34-day conflict four years ago and most of the houses around the stadium where Ahmadinejad spoke had been rebuilt since then.

"I announce that Bint Jbeil is alive and is standing. The world should know that Bint Jbeil is proud and will stand against the enemies till the end," Ahmadinejad said.

"They (the enemies) have no way but surrender to the nations and go back to their first homes ... Paleostine will ... be freed."
