Afghanistan
Taliban militias break into the homes of female university students seeking brides
[ElPais] Fawzia, a 17-year-old medical student, has been in hiding in Kabul for a month and believes the fundamentalists used her enrollment records to track her down.

Fawzia is 17 years old and has been hiding out in a shack in Kabul for almost a month. The future for this teenager, who uses a pseudonym, dimmed in late 2022 when the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
banned Afghan women from attending universities. In a video call from Kabul, the first-year medical student told EL PAÍS how on December 20 she was summoned to a classroom for a surprise exam. She realized it was a ruse when she saw that only people there were young women... and the Taliban. After informing the students that they could no longer continue their studies, the fundamentalists "began to select the students they liked, including me, and told us that we had to marry them." Fawzia managed to escape and return home, but hours later, the Taliban broke into the house and demanded that her parents give up their daughter.

Daily Evacuation Brief January 25, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI TO ACTIVATE ALL SECURITY CHECKPOINTS IN BOTH CITIES – Law enforcement officials of both cities met in Safe City (Islamabad) and discussed new security measures to be implemented in light of the increased terror threat posed by the TTP. All parties agreed to activate all checkpoints in both cities as well as increase security checks at both entry and exit points. As areas are searched in the cities, Police will cordon off the areas before beginning checks. Existing neighborhoods will be instructed on how to improve their security plans and Police will assist new neighborhoods in the development of their plans. Religious sites (seminaries, Mosques, schools, etc) and schools will be assisted with individualized security plans. At-risk Afghans in both locations should be aware these policies will take effect on Thursday and that the focus of these new policies is on interdicting TTP terror operations.

  • TALIBAN CHINA ARMS DEAL UNDER THE INTERNATIONAL MICROSCOPE – The Taliban regime is reportedly seeking to purchase several Blowfish Drones from China in an arms deal that has the international community wondering where the priorities for the de facto rulers lie. For the entirety of 2022, the regime has been screaming for international aid and humanitarian relief for a population that faces starvation and has been forced to adopt drastic measures just to stay fed, warm, and healthy. China confirmed the request and publicly stated that drones are necessary for counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan. It seems unlikely the international community will look kindly on defense spending by a regime that has basically written the textbook on how not to form a Nation.

  • BOTH AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN WORKING TO RESTORE POWER – The Taliban said that Uzbekistan would begin exporting power today after several fiery exchanges between the two countries and an uproar from Afghans who have been dealing with outages for some time now. In Pakistan, power has been restored in nearly every city but the government has called for an investigation into the situation after some MPs voiced concerns about a cyberattack.

  • CHINESE NATIONALS ARRESTED IN JALALABAD, ACCUSED OF LITHIUM SMUGGLING SCHEME – Taliban intelligence agents reputedly arrested 5 men in Jalalabad, 2 of whom are said to be Chinese nationals, for attempting to smuggle 1,000 metric tons of lithium ore to Pakistan for eventual use in China. The ore was reportedly mined in Nuristan and Kunar Provinces and was said to consist of roughly 30% lithium. China’s representatives in Kabul had yet to make a statement but a source within the Ministry of the Interior claimed they had asked their citizens be released in return for a guarantee they would be deported and dealt with in China. Their location and disposition are currently unknown. No further information was available.

  • US AND ALLIES MULLING NEW ENGAGEMENT CRITERIA WITH TALIBAN – The US has long been in consultations with other international partners over how to respond to the Taliban after the continued erosion of gender rights by the nascent regime. With international recognition basically off the table due to the self-inflicted policies, humanitarian and economic aid are the only realistic points of discussion left for the Taliban. The international community is left with the difficult task of attempting to help the Afghan people while bypassing a defacto regime.

Kenya says its troops killed 12 Al-Shabaab members near Somalia
[ShabelleMedia] The Kenyan army said they killed 12 al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all of which have enough problems without them...
fighters in the Garissa district after an operation they carried out yesterday.

A statement from the command of the Kenya Defense Forces [KDF] announced that the operation targeted a campsite for members of al-Shabaab in the North East region.

The operation was also carried out with weapons such as light guns, PKM, one bomb, and a lot of ammunition, according to the blurb of the Kenyan military.

The Kenyan army captured the life of one of the fighters, while ten others beat feet from the scene of the operation, crossing the Somali border.

Kenya has recently increased border security operations and is at war with al-Shabaab members who carry out attacks inside the country.

Two sets of US airstrikes in Haradheere, Amara kill more than 2 Shaboobs
US military kills two Al-Shabaab members in new airstrike

[ShabelleMedia] At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia and in support of Somali National Army engagements
...every such report seems to start this way nowadays...
against al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
, the U.S. Africa Command conducted a collective self-defense strike on Jan. 23, 2023.

The strike occurred in a remote area near Xaradheere, Somalia,
...alternate spelling Harardhere...
approximately 396 km northeast of Mogadishu where Somali forces were conducting operations.

The initial assessment is the strike killed two al-Shabaab terrorists.

Given the remote location of the operation, the initial assessment is that no civilians were maimed or killed.

A 2nd airstrike reported in central Somalia within two days

[ShabelleMedia] A military official says a second Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
happened around Amara town in central Somalia, targeting al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all of which have enough problems without them...
amid SNA ground operations in the country.

The commander who spoke to Radio Shabelle on condition of anonymity said the airstrike inflicted casualties on al-Shabaab but he could not say the exact number of the fatalities.
That sounds like more than one. Remember to round up the total number of ears to the next even number, guys, then divide by two.
After the overnight raid, al-Shabaab ordered a local telecom company to switch off the phone network to avert further airstrikes from the foreign warplanes, believed to be from the US.

The strike comes as Somali troops and local clan militia are jointly battling against al-Shabaab in the Mudug region, where they managed to retake Harardhere at Indian Ocean cost.

Al-Shabaab despite losing major ground, continued to carry out lethal attacks, mainly boom-mobileing and sieges in Mogadishu in response to the military offensive.

UK trains over 2700 SNA soldiers, releases £4.5 million for Al-Shabaab war
[Garowe] UK has invested in the training of the Somali National Army [SNA] as one of the strategies to help the country tackle growing security challenges key among them the fight against al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
faceless myrmidons who control large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

Kate Foster, the outgoing UK envoy to Somalia, noted that the country has immersed itself fully in training and equipping SNA troops at the UK training camp in Baidoa, Southwest, with the soldiers joining their counterparts on the battlefield.

Ms. Foster, who met President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud during her farewell over the weekend, noted that they seized the opportunity to discuss "ongoing shared priorities, including security, economic reforms, and humanitarian response efforts".

The two visited the UK Training Centre, where the president spoke to Somali troops and observed Somali instructors providing medical and counter-IED training. The al-Shabaab uses Improvised Explosive Devices [IEDs] while initiating attacks across the country.

She confirmed that the United Kingdom as one of the key security partners of Somalia has trained over 2,700 soldiers who have been given 43 vehicles for operations. The soldiers are dispatched to various Forward Operating Bases where they join the rest of the teams trained by other friendly governments.

"United Kingdom is pleased to support the Somali Security Forces. We have now trained over 2700 troops and donated 43 vehicles. We will continue to support the SNA through further strategic training," said Ms. Foster who now ends her three-year stint in Somalia as London's chief envoy.

"We are also supporting Somalia forces on joint operations against al-Shabaab through the UNSOS Trust Fund. UK has contributed £4.5 million this financial year to provide vital logistical capabilities to over 10,000 SNA and medical evacuations of frontline forces, " she added.

Besides the soldiers trained by the United Kingdom, Somalia is also privileged with special assistance from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
which trains Gorgor troops, and the United States which is responsible for training and equipping Danab Special Forces. Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
also recently trained over 5000 soldiers.

by Emad Almarshahi

A number of citizens, including a child and women, were injured on Monday when the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s militia bombarded citizens’ villages in Mudiya district of Abyan province, southern Yemen.

Informed sources stated that groups of the STC militia coming from Dhalea province and Yafea area in Lahj province, led by Mukhtar Al-Nubi, bombed a number of areas, including Al-Baqira village east of Mudiya, with mortars and machine guns, which resulted in the injury of several civilians, including a 3-year-old child and women and caused severe damage to citizens’ homes.

The tribesmen targeted the militia in response to the bombing of their villages and terrorizing their children and women, according to the sources.

This came after the STC militia launched a military campaign on the areas of Al-Mahzera and the villages of Al-Fathan tribes, storming homes and arresting several residents, including three from Al-Mahzera, which led to clashes that left nearly 4 dead and wounded during the past hours of Monday.

Five Baramulla youth being radicalised by cross-border handlers through social media rescued: police

Police on Tuesday claimed to have prevented five youth including two juveniles from joining militancy in north Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
’s Baramulla district.

Quoting a handout, GNS reported police saying about unearthing a major activity of forces of Evil to misguide the youth and entice them to join murderous Moslem ranks.

Baramulla police along with army 29 RR has succeeded in rescuing 5 youths including 2 juveniles (identity protected) from joining murderous Moslem ranks, it said.

According to police front man, as per information received from reliable sources, it was learnt that some youngsters are being enticed by murderous Moslem handlers from Pakistain to join murderous Moslem organizations. On receiving this input SFs first traced these youth and they were subjected to sustained questioning with the help of their parents. On their disclosure it was learnt that these youth were in touch with murderous Moslem handlers in Pakistain through social media to get recruited in murderous Moslem outfits. Militant handlers were trying to radicalize the minds of these boys. These boys all in their teenage have now been handed over to parents after proper counselling.

JK Police and Indian Army are firm on their resolve to defeat all nefarious designs of enemy to misguide and radicalize the youth of Kashmir, he said.

Parents are requested to keep vigil on activities of their children and cooperate with Police, read the statement.

Iraq
Turkey withdraws from over a dozen military bases in Duhok province: Sources
[Rudaw] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
has withdrawn troops from over a dozen military bases in Duhok province in a month, informed civilians and military sources in the area told Rudaw this week.

Turkey has established tens of military points in the Kurdistan Region in recent years in the framework of a series of offensives it has carried out against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Twenty-seven of these bases have been set up following the launch of the so-called Operation Claw-Lock in April, Rudaw has learnt.

Civilian and security sources in Duhok province told Rudaw’s Naif Ramadan on Sunday that Turkey had withdrawn 13 of its 27 military bases it had established since April.

In 2020, the Ottoman Turkish presidency published a map in a tweet which purportedly showed nearly 40 Ottoman Turkish "military points" in the Kurdistan Region. The tweet was later deleted.

The Ottoman Turkish army’s presence in the Kurdistan Region has grown significantly in recent decades, particularly since the 1990s.

Ottoman Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar told news hounds on Tuesday that his army has been able to control a 302-kilometre line on the Kurdistan Region borders through its latest offensive, Claw-Lock. He added that most of Mount Zap has been controlled by Ankara.

Peshkaft Rashid is from Sargale village in Amedi town. He fled his home in summer due to Ottoman Turkish bombardment. Now the tensions between Turkey and the PKK have de-escalated in his village but Kurdish security forces are preventing him from returning to his village. He lives in a nearby village now.

"The situation is calm and there is no problem but the security forces prevent me from returning to my village. I hope that they take my demand into consideration so that I do not lose," he told Rudaw, adding that he is struggling to find a place to feed his livestock. He has lost about 40 sheep in the last five months due to the bombardments.

A large number of villages in Duhok province have been vacated due to Ottoman Turkish attacks.

Ahmed Arif is a military expert. He said that Turkey’s withdrawal from these areas does not mean that it will not come back.

"We know that [Iraq’s] border forces have been deployed to these areas [where Turkey has withdrawn] and Turkey will not make a return as long as there is no movement [of PKK] there," he said.

PKK is an gang struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. Ankara has listed it as a terrorist organization, often targeting its fighters at home and in the Kurdistan Region.

Karwan Khoshnaw, a spokesperson for Iraq’s border forces, said earlier this month that the Kurdistan Region’s borders with Turkey are "calmer" now, partially contributing to freezing weather.

He also said that their forces are using surveillance drones to monitor the developments on the borders, noting that "the Iraqi government has decided to send us necessary equipment."

Hezbollah erects new watchtowers on Lebanon border as IDF builds defensive wall
[IsraelTimes] 18-meter tall observation post rises as UN peacekeeping force breaks up another tense standoff between Israeli and Lebanese soldiers on border.

Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2006 unknown persons blew up Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the car he was traveling in, the road he was traveling on, and a few innocent bystanders of no account whatsoever. The person or persons unknow weren't Hezbollah, you can bet on that. Really. Even though there was an international tribunal that said it was them...
’s Hezbollah terror group has established new tall observation posts on Israel’s northern border as the Israel Defense Forces has ramped up the construction of a defensive wall.

Residents of the northern town of Shtula who spoke to the Ynet news site and Channel 12 news said one such 18-meter-high tower, a few dozen meters from the border, had been constructed over the past month, right where the IDF was replacing its aging border fence with a nine-meter-high concrete wall.

The Israeli military has long accused Hezbollah of conducting clandestine activities along the Israel-Lebanon border under the guise of an environmental group known as "Green Without Borders," and published details of one such new site last year.

Ynet’s northern correspondent reported that at least 20 posts manned 24 hours a day by Hezbollah members in civilian clothing have been built over the past year.

Some of the posts are just meters away from the internationally recognized border between the countries — known as the Blue Line — and IDF positions on the other side of the fence.

According to the IDF, the alleged Hezbollah positions represent a violation of United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war.

The resolution calls for gangs besides the official Lebanese military and peacekeeping United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to remain north of the country’s Litani River.

The IDF has made similar claims in recent years, identifying several observation posts owned by the supposed non-governmental organization, which the military said were actually being used to carry out intelligence and reconnaissance work for the Iran-backed terror group.

In 2017, the United Nations rejected Israel’s claim that Hezbollah was using the NGO as a front for its activities.

At the time, UNIFIL said that while Green Without Borders members have planted trees in the area, it "has not observed any unauthorized armed persons at the locations or found any basis to report a violation of resolution 1701."

The reports Monday came as United Nation peacekeepers were seen breaking up a standoff between Israeli and Lebanese forces along the border, after the latter complained that Israeli engineering work crossed over the demarcation line, for the second time in a week.

Footage from the scene near the northern town of Margaliot showed armed Lebanese soldiers standing guard where Israeli soldiers had placed barbed wire.

UNIFIL forces were seen separating the two sides.

According to Lebanese media reports, UNIFIL had stopped the Israeli engineering works after complaints by the Lebanese army that they had crossed the international border, known as the Blue Line. The Blue Line is marked with blue barrels along the border and is several meters from the Israeli fence in some areas.

The IDF did not immediately provide a comment on the incident.

Last week, engineering work was halted after an IDF excavator possibly crossed the Blue Line by several centimeters. UNIFIL troops have broken up several such standoffs between the IDF and the Lebanese Army in recent years.

The peacekeeping force has been in Lebanon since 1978. Composed of nearly 10,000 soldiers, it is deployed in the south of the country — a stronghold of Hezbollah — to maintain a barrier with Israel, as the two countries technically remain at war.

The terror group has long been the IDF’s most significant adversary on Israel’s borders, with an estimated arsenal of nearly 150,000 rockets and missiles that can reach anywhere in Israel.

Work on the border wall with Lebanon began in 2018. By 2020, the military and Defense Ministry Borders and Security Fence Directorate had completed only 15 kilometers (9 miles) of concrete walling along the approximately 130-kilometer (80-mile) border in order to protect the 22 adjacent Israeli villages.

Eventually, the plan is to construct a barrier along the entire border — a project that would cost NIS 1.7 billion ($470 million).
