Great White North
Indians On Warpath In Ontario, Government Spineless To Stop It
It's been a long time since we've received as much response to an article as we did following our Jan. 17 editorial, "Caledonia redux." A huge number of Ontarians from the Caledonia area -- many of them with first-hand stories to tell about militant native activity -- thanked us for shining a light on the problems they've suffered. Few could understand why their provincial government is standing by as violent protesters wreck the region's economy, intimidate private citizens and render local homes and businesses virtually worthless.

As reported earlier this week, the freshest outrage to come out of the land claim by the Six Nations band in southwestern Ontario amounts to an extortion racket.

Members of an entity calling itself the Haudenosaunee Development Institute (HDI), which apparently has the official blessing of the Six Nations council, have been confronting developers along a 10-kilometre swath on either side of the Grand River --a tract potentially almost 300,000 square kilometres in size -- demanding exorbitant development fees and "royalties." Even just to "apply" for a permit to operate on land the band claims as its own can cost up to $7,000.

Businesses that don't pay up are threatened with blockades and standoffs of the kind that have paralyzed the Douglas Creek Estates development at Caledonia, southwest of Hamilton, for the past two years.

Were a motorcycle gang or organized crime family shaking down the same entrepreneurs for protection money, the Ontario government and the province's police force -- the OPP -- would move swiftly to identify the guilty parties and lay charges.

But because the culprits this time are members of a politically correct minority -- aboriginals -- and because the government of Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty is deathly afraid of any and all confrontations with natives, which they fear might summon memories of the Ipperwash standoff in 1995, the best it can bring itself to do is advise business owners not to pay.

It is a case study in cowardice, and everyone who voted for Mr. McGuinty should be ashamed of it.

Business owners aren't listening to the Premier, and with good reason. They know the Ontario government won't protect them. The government at Queen's Park has stood by for almost two years while Six Nations squatters have illegally occupied unfinished homes at Douglas Creek. Rather than enforce court orders for the occupiers to leave, the province bought the land from the original developers and effectively handed it over to the squatters.

Nor have the OPP been any more help. Aboriginal protestors have caused untold damage to the economy of Caledonia, blockading main streets, burning vehicles, harassing citizens, even assaulting seniors, television camera crews and residents near their protest site. Yet police have done little more than stand by and watch.

Nearly 18 months ago, protesters swarmed an SUV full of U.S. police officers who were in Caledonia to observe. Three occupants were dragged out and assaulted, then one of the swarmers stole the vehicle, attempted to run down an OPP officer and fled to the nearby reserve. The OPP didn't even investigate who might be hiding the alleged perpetrators.

#2  Which demonstrates once again the real war is not with the islamists. The real war is with ourselves. We could annihilate islam, obliterate every trace of its civilization and do so within hours.

First defeat the traitors at home. Then destroy the enemy.

#3  The Islamicists/jihadis won't wait while we deal with the traitors at home, also a generation-long fight. The two fronts need to be fought simultaneously -- and it is happening, although neither as fast as we would like.

#4  The enemyis collectivism. Specifically Tribalism. The only difference between the Islamists adn these thugs is the mask Tribalism is wearing.

28 (D) Congressmen Vote Vets Lower Than Felons, Junkies, Sex Offenders
... You see, last Thursday, just days after this little column focused on homeless vets and the myths surrounding them, Congress was in the process of extending the nation's giant federal housing program, called HOPE VI, through the year 2015. Cost to taxpayers: $800 million per year. The legislation as written (H.R. 3524) gave preference to a group called the "hard to house," people like convicted felons, sex offenders and drug abusers - some just weeks out of prison.

But Republicans, led by Missouri Congressman Sam Graves, caught the ridiculousness of that preference and added an amendment to the bill while on the floor, rightly calling for HUD to put veterans before criminals when deciding eligibility. "Veterans should be at the front of the line," said Graves, a sixth-generation family farmer and relative newcomer to Washington.

Here is the shame: The vote was 372 in favor of veterans getting HUD housing preference. But 28 Democrats, including Georgia's own John Lewis, actually voted to put vets at the back of the line behind criminals.

How do they live with themselves?

Graves' office stated, "This wasn't a Republican issue or a Democrat issue, it was an American issue. We owe our daily freedoms to veterans and this is one small thing we can do to say thank you."

It's appalling that Lewis and the others couldn't vote yes for our heroes. Will they, I wonder, use the "homeless vets" argument in the future to prop up their anti-war rhetoric?

Probably.

Because they support the troops. right?

"You fight an election with the politicians you have"
William Kristol, The Weekly Standard

. . . It's foolish to wait for another Ronald Reagan. But not just because his political gifts are rare. There's a particular way in which Reagan was exceptional that many of us fail to appreciate: He was the only president of the last century who came to the office as the leader of an ideological movement.

Reagan gave "The Speech" in October 1964, inherited the leadership of the conservative movement after Goldwater's loss, defeated a moderate establishment Republican two years later to win the GOP nomination for governor of California, and then defeated the Democratic incumbent. He remained in a sense the leader of conservatives nationally while serving two terms as governor, ran unsuccessfully against Gerald Ford in 1976, and won the presidency in 1980. He was a conservative first and a politician second, a National Review and Human Events reader first and an elected official second.

This is exceedingly unusual. The normal American president is a politician, with semicoherent ideological views, who sometimes becomes a vehicle for an ideological movement. Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, and George W. Bush are typical. They can be good nominees and effective presidents. They can advance the cause of a movement that works with them and through them. But they're not Reagans.

This year's GOP field is, in this sense, normal. Conservatives will find things to like and dislike, to trust and distrust, in each of the candidates. All of this is fine. And one could argue that a primary process featuring debate and competition is also fine, that it is healthier than a coronation, and that the party nominee could well emerge stronger from the process.

So the conservative commentariat should take a deep breath, be a bit less judgmental about these individuals--and realize that there is not likely to be a second Reagan. They could also learn from liberalism's history. Liberalism was the most successful American political movement of the first two-thirds of the 20th century. Its three iconic presidents were Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and John Kennedy. All advanced the liberal cause while in office. None was a standard-bearer for liberalism before becoming president--though each was inclined in a more or less progressive direction. What it means to be a serious, successful, and mature political movement is to take men like these--one might say to take advantage of men like these--in order to advance one's principles and cause.

So conservatives might think of John McCain as our potential TR, Mike Huckabee as our potential FDR, and Mitt Romney as our potential JFK. Support the one you prefer. But don't work yourself into a frenzy against the others. Let the best man emerge from a challenging primary process. And if there is no clear-cut winner, then the delegates at the GOP convention can turn on the fifth ballot to an obvious fallback compromise candidate, one who would be just fine with conservatives--Dick Cheney!

The man has a point. It would be nice if the Theoretically Ideal Conservative was running, but Theo's not on the ballot. Support the best available in the primary, but if your guy's not the nominee, don't go off in a third-party/stay-at-home snit. Whatever flaws the nominee has, he will almost assuredly* be better at fighting the GWOT than Hillary, Obama, Edwards, or Kucinich

*I'm assuming here that the Trunk nominee will not be Ron Paul. That's probably a safe bet.

#1  Concur Mike. If McCain gets the nod I will hold my nose (and vomit) and vote for him over any of the dem-socialists.

#2  Agreed. To not voting for Ron Paul, I'd add the Huckster - he as no interest (or idea on) in fighting the GWOT. However, the likes of the candidates that continue to hold the reigns of power only bring us closer to the day of (as so eloquently stated earlier here at RB) .50 cal term limits.

#3  Rex: agreed w/r/t Huckabee, but Huck seems to be fading in the stretch.
Posted by: Mike || 01/20/2008 16:00 Comments || Top||

#4  Indeed. Politics being the art of the practical, not the perfect. So long as he fights the Long War seriously, I can forgive much else, and look to my Congresspeople to work on the rest.

Human 'Fever' Outbreak In West Bengal Avian Flu Epicenter
(Via Avian Flu Diary Blog)

Margram, January 19: At Margram, the epicentre of bird flu, hundreds of villagers throng primary health centres everyday for Tamiflu only to be sent back with antibiotics and syrups. Tamiflu is a rare commodity not only in Government health centres but also at private chemists. And with a number of health staff opting out of the door-to-door survey because they have not been paid their allowances, quacks have a field day making a fast buck.

"At present we are giving Tamiflu only to Animal Resources Department staff and health surveyors, who are visiting villages. There is nothing to worry as this disease rarely affects humans. Regarding health surveyors, there was a problem with their allowance but this was due to bureaucratic tangles," said Sunil Kumar Bhowmik, Chief Medical Officer, Birbhum.

Everyday at Margram primary health centre on an average 120 patients visit the Out Patients Department of whom around 80 to 90 people have fever. At Bosua Block primary health centre, 220 patients visit the OPD daily and the fever frequency is between 150 to 170. But in neither of the places-the only Government-run health care facilities-Tamiflu is to be found.

At Margram centre, pharmacists hand out antibiotics and syrups and send the patients back home. "What can we do? Many are coming here with high fever. The doctors are busy at the bird flu control room at the BDO office. We had asked for Tamiflu, but the authorities declined the request. Therefore, we are treating patients for simple fever with common drugs."

The virus is now appearing in 5 districts.

Athens - Al Qaeda: A Global Phenomenon Reaching Maturity

#1  Moreover, the terrorists do not exhibit in most respects the characteristics of paranoid personalities. They are able to blend in with the rest of the society, adopt foreign costumes superficially, and stay in tune with the wider developments in the world. They are also trained internationally by Al Qaeda. Before 2001, they could travel easily in foreign countries. In short, they do not represent the majority of the Muslim world.

So. It is the muslims who "fits in" should be suspect of terrorism? Who is this author?
