Carjackings Up 126 Percent in Mayor Brandon Johnson's Chicago
Were the lights on?
[Breitbart] Crime in surging in Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) Chicago, with carjackings in particular up 126 percent.

“The number of carjackings is more than double what it was at this point last year,” FOX News reported.

FOX News noted that robbery is up 16 percent, thefts are up 14 percent, and sexual assaults are up five percent in Chicago.

Gun violence has remained a constant throughout Johnson’s first few months as mayor.

This past weekend, Breitbart News pointed out nearly 20 were shot Friday into Saturday night and nearly 30 were shot Friday into mid-afternoon Sunday.

By Monday morning, ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times put the total number of shooting victims at 33 with six fatalities.

Chicago, like all of Illinois, has an “assault weapons” ban, a “high capacity” magazine ban, a red flag law, a 72-hour waiting period on gun purchases, and a licensing requirement for gun owners. Cook County — the county in which Chicago sits — has its own ban on “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines.

#1  Homicides (about 92% of which are with guns) are down by about 7% from last year noting that Brandon Johnson has only been mayor for about 2 months.

Carjacking and car theft is way up in other cities also. This started in 2020. One theory is that with no school during the pandemic, kids were looking for something to do and discovered that carjacking was relatively easy to do and kids weren't prosecuted.

Shocking moment Circleville police dog brutally mauls black trucker Jadarrius Rose with his hands up after police chase in Ohio for a missing mud flap
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] BLUF: Town K-9 police officer is a little too helpful at State Patrol highway stop.
  • Police in Ohio unleashed a K9 on a Black man who had exited his vehicle with his hands raised after fleeing a traffic stop earlier this month
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Betcha he doesn’t flee a traffic stop next time
  • The incident unfolded on July 4 after law enforcement officers engaged in the lengthy pursuit of a semi-tractor trailer driven by 23-year-old Jadarrius Rose

#6  Does a police dog need to be involved in a traffic stop? Will not say the cop has a problem with racism b/c he's probably more asshole than racist. Play stupid games, like the disproportional murder of black men by police departments. This just plays into the whole stereotype and why #FTP is an anthem to black culture.

North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile, Say South Korea, Japan

fired a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast late on Monday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Japan's defense ministry also reported the launch of what it said could be a ballistic missile by North Korea.

The reports come amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula as South Korea and the United States take steps to boost military readiness against North Korea's weapons program with the deployment of US strategic military assets.

North Korea has reacted angrily, saying such deployment could meet the criteria for its use of nuclear weapons.

North Korea conducted ballistic missile tests last week, hours after a US nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine arrived at a South Korean port for the first time since the 1980s.

On Monday, another nuclear-powered US submarine arrived in South Korea.

Over the weekend, the North fired a barrage of cruise missiles into the sea off its west coast.

UN Command says in ‘conversation’ with North Korea over US soldier
[Dawn] The UN Command has started a conversation with Pyongyang over American soldier Travis King, who ran across the border into North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
last week, its deputy commander said on Monday.

"A conversation has commenced with the KPA through the mechanism of the armistice agreement," Lieutenant General Andrew Harrison said at a press briefing, referring to North Korea’s military, the Korean People’s Army.

The UN Command is a US-led multinational force that oversees the Korean War truce. The two Koreas remain technically at war because the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice and not a peace treaty.

"The primary concern for us is for Private King’s welfare," Harrison said, adding that the incident was "still subject to investigation".

Harrison said that, under the armistice agreement, there was a mechanism allowing the UN Command to communicate with the North’s military in the Joint Security Area (JSA).

"That process has started" but due to the "very delicate nature of these negotiations", he said he would not go into further detail.

"Obviously there is someone’s welfare at stake and clearly we are in a very difficult and complex situation which I don’t want to risk by speculation or going into too much detail about the communications that have existed."

The United States does not have formal diplomatic ties with the North and, since North Korea closed its borders at the start of the pandemic, most embassies with a presence in Pyongyang have withdrawn their foreign diplomats.

North Korea has not commented publicly on King.

JSA TOUR
Private Second Class King was being escorted to Seoul’s airport last week and was due to fly to Texas after a drunken bar brawl, an altercation with police and a stint in South Korean jail.

But instead of getting on the plane to face disciplinary hearings at Fort Bliss, King slipped away, joined a tourist tour of the Demilitarised Zone and fled across the border. He is now believed to be in North Korean custody.

Most of the border between the two Koreas is heavily fortified. But at the JSA, the frontier is marked only by a low concrete divider and is relatively easy to cross, despite soldiers on both sides.

The JSA has been closed to tourists since King’s border crossing, and it will likely remain that way for the foreseeable future, Harrison said.

But since the area has an educational value, the decision may be reviewed in future, he said, adding that "it’s a constant balance between that value and the risk to the individuals who are in the demilitarised zone".

"It can never simply be a tourist destination, primarily because of the huge amount of ordnance that still exists across the demilitarised zone since the end of the war," he said.

When asked whether King had been classified as a defector by either side, Harrison said the UN Command "haven’t categorised Private King as anything but an American soldier", and added that he would never speak on behalf of North Korea.

’BARGAINING CHIPS’
Pyongyang has a long history of detaining Americans and using them as bargaining chips in bilateral negotiations.

The incident comes as relations between the two Koreas are at one of their lowest points, with diplomacy stalled and North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
calling for increased weapons development, including tactical nuclear warheads.

Seoul and Washington have ramped up defence cooperation in response, staging joint military exercises with advanced stealth jets and US strategic assets.

Washington sent a nuclear-capable submarine on a port call to South Korea last week, prompting heavy criticism from the North, which claimed it could meet the legal conditions under which Pyongyang would use its nuclear weapons.

Manipur Viral Video Case: 7th Accused Arrested in Midnight Operation
[OneIndia] Police have arrested a seventh accused in connection with the disturbing video that emerged from Manipur, showing two women being paraded naked by a mob. The arrest took place in Thoubal district on Monday.

The video depicting the harrowing scene has sparked widespread condemnation from various quarters. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) in Manipur has accused the mob of gang-raping the two women in a field. The alleged incident reportedly occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, situated 35 kilometers away from the state capital, Imphal. However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
the police maintain that the incident actually happened in a different district, despite the First Information Report (FIR) being filed in Kangpokpi.

The police made the first arrest on July 20, the day after the 26-second video surfaced online. Subsequently, three more arrests were made on the same day. The fifth suspect was apprehended on Saturday and is a 19-year-old, while the sixth person taken into custody is a minor, according to the police.

Pak anti-Ahmadi drive invites UN bodies ire
[Dawn] The drive against the Ahmadi community, which has become a regular feature in Punjab, is not only bringing a bad name to the country, but also inviting the ire of UN bodies.

After a campaign last month to stop Ahmadis from offering sacrifice on Eidul Azha, the latest drive launched against the community involves demolition of the minarets of their places of worship.

The drive is being spearheaded by the Tehrik-e-Labbaik Pakistain (TLP).

Reporter's Notebook: Navy, Congress continue to wrangle over fate of San Diego-based warships
[SD UT] Boy, those LCSs are sure popular
The Navy wants to decommission some ships early and some that are near or have reached retirement age. Congress is balking.

San Diego Bay is awash in warships the Navy no longer wants but may have to keep, at least for the short term.

Congress continues to push back on efforts by the Navy to decommission some ships early, as well ships that are near or have reached their retirement age. Many lawmakers say the vessels are still needed, especially Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers.

The Navy disagrees, insisting that the ships should be scrapped to free up money to build new, more advanced platforms.

The matter wasn’t clearly resolved when the U.S. House of Representatives recently approved a defense authorization bill for fiscal 2024. The matter has been passed onto the Senate.

That leaves a question mark over the fate of three San Diego-based cruisers, each of which were designed to last at least 35 years. The Navy wants to get rid of the USS Cowpens (age 32), USS Mobile Bay (36) and the USS Bunker Hill (37).

A fourth locally-based cruiser, USS Lake Champlain (36), recently returned from its last mission. But a formal decommissioning date hasn’t been announced. It’s also unclear when the cruiser USS Princeton (36), which has operated out of San Diego for years, will be taken out of service. The Navy has indicated it would like to take the ship out of service in 2026, but that’s not a formal commitment.

The Navy also has expressed a desire to decommission two comparatively new, San Diego-based littoral combat ships, the USS Montgomery, which is 7, and the USS Jackson, which is 8. They were designed to last at least 25 years.

Broadly speaking, littoral combat ships haven’t met the Navy’s performance expectations and they’re proving to be far more expensive to upgrade and operate than once thought.

#2  The cruisers are old, and while not completely unuseable, aren't capable of upgrades that would make a refit practical. The Arliegh Burke destroyers thet are coming out of the yards are as capable as these cruisers (they very nearly are cruisers).
As for LCS (the boat only a defense contractor could love), it's program that will be used for years to show how to screw up a design.

#6  The driving philosophy behind LCS seems to have been:
"These yards aren't up to snuff on producing mil components.
Well what can they make?
Stuff we don't need that breaks easily.
Lets make that!"
Posted by: ed in texas || 07/25/2023 11:26 Comments || Top||

#7  The LCS's all have flight decks and hangars, so a simple up-gunning with a couple of Bradley FV turrets, put a couple of Attack-Helo's and/or drones, and assign then to convoy duty and pirate suppression off Somalia and the Persian Gulf. Free up the actual combatants stuck doing that now to thicken the fleet for the upcoming South China Sea dust-up.

#9  Drone mother ships might make some sense as a use for the LCS. They're going to be meat for drones themselves if they try their original mission of close-in support, so turn about is...
Posted by: Nero || 07/25/2023 13:04 Comments || Top||

#10  The Arliegh Burke destroyers thet are coming out of the yards are as capable as these cruisers (they very nearly are cruisers).

Have you ever seen the Janes Fighting Ships 1942ed.? Very educational book. The US ships class by class are generally bigger than their Japanese or European counterparts because of the needs of the US Pacific Fleet -- the US ships needed longer endurance to fight from the US coast to the Philippines -- more fuel tanks, more food and more crew space. Things a coastal defense navy don't want to 'waste' money building into a design.

The LCS is the bastard child of the 'bean counters' and the 'Revolution not Evolution' theorists. They got the whole program 'bass-ackwards' from the beginning ...develop the Modules first, maybe testing on something like small commercial freighter hulls, and then start cranking out military hulls if the concepts work.
