Code Name Blue Wren: The True Story of America's Most Dangerous Female Spy
[Cuba Confidential with Amazon Review] Just days after the 9-11 attacks, a senior Pentagon analyst eased her red Toyota Echo into traffic and headed to work. She never saw the undercover cars tracking her every turn. As she settled into her cubicle on the 6th floor of the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, FBI Agents and twitchy DIA officers were hiding in nearby offices. For this was the day that Ana Montes--the US Intelligence Community superstar who had just won a prestigious fellowship at the CIA--was to be arrested and publicly exposed as a secret agent for Cuba.

Like spies Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen before her, Ana Montes blindsided her colleagues with brazen acts of treason. For nearly 17 years, Montes succeeded in two high-stress jobs. By day, she was one of the government’s top Cuba experts, a buttoned-down GS-14 with shockingly easy access to classified documents. By night, she was on the clock for Fidel Castro, listening to coded messages over shortwave radio, passing US secrets to handlers in local restaurants, and slipping into Havana wearing a wig.

Montes didn’t just deceive her country. Her betrayal was intensely personal. Her mercurial father was a former US Army Colonel. Her brother and sister-in-law were FBI Special Agents. And her only sister, Lucy, also worked her entire career for the Bureau. The highlight of her distinguished 31 years as a Miami-based language specialist: Helping the FBI flush Cuban spies out of the United States. Little did Lucy or her family know that the greatest Cuban spy of all was sitting right next to them at Thanksgivings, baptisms, and weddings.

In Code Name Blue Wren, investigative journalist Jim Popkin weaves the tale of two sisters who chose two very different paths, plus the unsung heroes who had to fight to bring Ana to justice. With exclusive access to a "Secret" CIA behavioral profile of Ana, family memoirs, and Ana’s incriminating letters from prison, Popkin reveals the making of a traitor—a woman labelled "one of the most damaging spies in U.S. history" by America’s top counter-intelligence official.

After more than two decades in federal prison, Montes will be freed in January 2023. Code Name Blue Wren is a thrilling detective tale, an insider’s look at the clandestine world of espionage, and an intimate exploration of the dark side of betrayal.

Ninth Circuit Rules That Middle School Teacher's MAGA Hat Was Protected Speech
[ZERO] There is a major ruling out of the United States States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in favor of a middle school science teacher, Eric Dodge, who was barred from wearing a "Make America Great Again" baseball cap and later berated by the principal, Caroline Garrett, as a "racist" and a "homophobe."

The unanimous court ruled that the hat was protected speech under the First Amendment.

District Court judge James L. Robart ruled against Dodge and dismissed the case in its entirety. (Robart is the judge who was publicly denounced by former President Trump). Robart dismissed the case on the grounds of qualified immunity or a failure to substantiate claims.

The Ninth Circuit reversed Robart, but it did uphold the dismissal of the case against two defendants, the Evergreen Public Schools district and the district’s Chief Human Resources Officer Jenae Gomes.

Eric Dodge had only recently been assigned to the school after he recovered from a stroke. He is a 17-year veteran of the Evergreen district. He told Garrett that he wore the hat because he had sensitive spots on his scalp that had to be protected from the sun. He also said that he agreed with the message of the hat. Garrett said that the hat represented hate and prejudice to many others.

Las Anod witnesses second attack against Somaliland troops
In one corner of the country, the historical war of all against all returns.
[ShabelleMedia] A second attack in a week was reported in the conflict-riddled northern Somali town of Las Anod amid public outcry over the Somaliland army’s atrocities.

The local residents reported that heavy fighting between the breakaway region’s forces and gunnies occurred on Tuesday night in the center of the city as people were asleep.

The button men targeted the Somaliland military outpost on the southern side of the town and engaged in a shootout with the troops stationed there.

Both warring sides used heavy and light weaponry during the late-night confrontation which comes in the middle of an outpouring of public anger at the presence of Somaliland.

So far, details of the casualties remain sketchy and no official in the city’s administration did speak about the attack and the subsequent battle but there are reports of losses.

On the other hand, some residents started to flee from the city to the outside peaceful areas in fear of an open war between Somaliland and Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
forces in Sool region.

The Las Anod unrest enters the second week with medical officials reporting the deaths of at least 20 people and 30 wounds, who were admitted to local hospitals for treatment.

England Sees 39% Rise In Children Needing Help For Serious Mental Health Problems
[ZeroHedge] Figures show more than a million children need treatment for serious mental health problems, including eating disorders, in the time since lockdowns were imposed in England.

NHS data analysed by the PA news agency show a 39 percent rise in a year in referrals for NHS mental health treatment for under-18s, to 1,169,515 in 2021 to 2022.

This compares with the previous year of 2020 to 2021, when the figure was 839,570. In 2019 to 2020 there were 850,741 referrals.

From 2020 to early 2022 the UK government imposed multiple COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.

The England-wide data include children who are suicidal, self-harming, suffering serious depression or anxiety, and those with eating disorders.

Hospital admissions for eating disorders were also found to be increasing among under-18s.

There were 7,719 admissions in 2021/22, up from 6,079 the previous year, and 4,232 in 2019/20, an 82 percent rise across two years.
Etc.

#16  if one is a smoker, the abused mucus membrane may serve as an armor?

An interesting conjecture. Mucus is like microbial quicksand, so increased or thickened mucus would be a good thing in dealing with invading microbes. In the same way, thickened, leathery lungs might impair the passage of invaders as well as oxygen molecules.

US prepares to use nuclear weapons
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

[REGNUM] Seoul announced the creation of a military administration to respond to "nuclear threats from the North." The United States, behind this initiative, continues its policy of involving satellites in nuclear games, lowering the threshold for the use of this "doomsday weapon" in the hope that its popular concept of "limited nuclear war" will be put into practice.

Crenshaw Blasts Anti-McCarthy Republicans: ‘Tell Us What You Actually Want Or Shut The F*** Up'
[DW] Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) tore into a small group of Republican lawmakers during multiple interviews on Wednesday for blocking Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) bid to become the new House Speaker.

The Republicans who are blocking McCarthy’s bid included Reps. Dan Bishop (NC), Lauren Boebert (CO), Byron Donalds (FL), Josh Brecheen (OK), Mike Cloud (TX), Andrew Clyde (GA), Eli Crane (AZ), Matt Gaetz (FL), Bob Good (VA), Paul Gosar (AZ), Andy Harris (MD), Anna Paulina Luna (FL), Mary Miller (IL), Ralph Norman (SC), Andy Ogles (TN), Scott Perry (PA), Matt Rosendale (MT), Chip Roy (TX), Keith Self (TX), and Andy Biggs (AZ).

Speaking to reporters, Crenshaw unloaded on the 20 Republicans, saying, "I’m tired of your stupid platitudes that some consultant told you to say on the campaign trail, alright."

"Behind closed doors tell us what you actually want, or shut the f**** up," he said. "They need to be men and adults and say what they want, instead of playing these little games, that’s what we’re asking."

"That’s what I’ve asked them. Some of them are my friends. Stop saying platitudes like, ’Washington is broken. We can’t do the status quo,’" he continued. "They want to pull the pins on the grenades and lock the doors."

#14  The bottom line result of a hard right Speaker pushing hard right initiatives? A rump GOP minority in 2024 and Biden's re-election. That's why so many GOP reps like McCarthy. They know he won't get them fired in 2024. It's also why neither Scalise nor Meadows wants the job. It's a post that requires moderation, failing which GOP donors and voters who provide the margin of victory go on strike. Scalise and Meadows want to remain true to their principles.

#16  San Fran Nan was anything but moderate, Zhang.

Moderate in the context of her caucus. McCarthy is moderate relative to the GOP right, but far to the right of even the most right wing Democrat. ACU ratings don't lie. Manchin in the Senate is considered right wing for a Democrat, but he is to the left of Susan Collins, the leftmost GOP senator.

#17  Moderate in the context of her caucus. Nope. Not buyin'.

#18  Moderate in the context of her caucus. Nope. Not buyin'.

I'd like to share your deeply-held belief, but my lyin' eyes keep getting in the way. Fact is Democrat reps like getting re-elected, too. And many of them are in districts where a 5% swing the other way sends them back to the private sector. That's why Pelosi, not AOC, was the Speaker. Because as crazy as Pelosi is, she's nowhere near the asylum-grade nuttiness of the far left.
Posted by: Zhang Fei || 01/05/2023 19:15 Comments || Top||

#19  The point that the Chip Roy faction refuses to acknowledge is that McCarthy may be short 20 votes, but anyone else is short 200 votes. If this continues much longer, the Speaker will be chosen by a plurality vote of the majority caucus. That would really marginalize the Chip Roy wing of the GOP. Holding up the Speakership vote is a really short-sighted move, but my impression from their pointlessly inflammatory public statements on other subjects is that they're not exactly strategic thinkers. Being a politician doesn't mean you have to utter every single thought that comes into your mind.
Posted by: Zhang Fei || 01/05/2023 19:27 Comments || Top||

#20  The amusing thing about this contretemps? January 6 will be more of a nothingburger than it already was. Kinzinger got his much-sought-after CNN contract, so will presumably be whaling away at the GOP in his new role as Chief GOP Quisling.
