5 shot, 2 killed during first virtual Baltimore Ceasefire Weekend
[WMAR Ballymore] Two men were killed and three others were shot in Baltimore over the weekend. The same weekend dedicated to promoting peace.
"They peaceful now"
It was the first virtual Baltimore Ceasefire Weekend. The organization moved events online to continuing celebrating lives and promoting peaceful activities while social distancing.

Still, two men were murdered and three others were shot.

Friday, a 29-year-old was shot and killed on Lakewood Aveue. Sunday afternoon, a man was shot trying to run away from the suspect at a shopping center on Cold Spring Lane. Baltimore Police believe the victim was shot and ran into a store before collapsing.

"Please just send light and love to the families of people who've been shot and killed in the last three days," said Baltimore Ceasefire 365 co-founder Erricka Bridgeford.

To honor the man killed on Friday, Bridgeford and a few ceasefire members held a sacred space ritual there. It's something they always do, but instead of inviting the community, they broadcasted it online.

"Now what that meant was that his cousins, his mother, all were able to watch on Instagram and see us bless the space in honor of Justin," said Bridgeford.

They plan on holding the same ritual at the shopping center on Cold Spring Lane for the second victim on Monday at 5 p.m. It will be broadcast live on their social media.
"Stay tuned for more ME work, Dr. Quincy"
Over the weekend, they also held other events virtually to spread awareness, including a live DJ and public forums, and they are coming up with other ways to continue recruitment and spread their message while social distancing.

"Because we were dealing with the murder epidemic before COVID-19, we will still be dealing with it afterwards," said Bridgeford.

Black Georgia man, 20, is arrested for setting up fake Facebook page in support of Ahmaud Arbery's two killers and threatening protesters who paid their respects at the spot where the 25-year-old jogger was 'lynched'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Rashawn Smith, 20, is alleged to have created a fake Facebook page which he then used to send 'hoax' threats to protesters demanding justice in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery

  • Arbery, 25, was gunned down while jogging in his neighborhood near Brunswick, Georgia, on February 23

  • Greg McMichael, 64, and his son, Travis McMichael, 34, were initially freed as local prosecutors declined to charge them

  • But after video of the shooting emerged, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case and arrested the two men on Thursday, charging them with homicide and aggravated assault

#4  i still have yet to see definitive proof that this guy was a 'jogger' like every single media outlet describes him.

i've seen photos where it looked like he was wearing heavy boots, not quite what i would describe as jogging material.

there's probably blame due all around, but i'd like to see something definitive as to whether he was really jogging or doing something else. the media has already decided he was jogging and they always lead with that...

Pres. Trump abruptly ends briefing after contentious exchanges
[AP] NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump abruptly ended his White House news conference Monday following combative exchanges with reporters Weijia Jiang of CBS News and Kaitlan Collins of CNN.

Jiang asked Trump why he was putting so much emphasis on the amount of coronavirus tests that have been conducted in the United States.

"Why does that matter?" Jiang asked. "Why is this a global competition to you if everyday Americans are still losing their lives and we’re still seeing more cases every day?"

Trump replied that "they’re losing their lives everywhere in the world. And maybe that’s a question you should ask China. Don’t ask me. Ask China that question."

He called for another question, and there was no immediate response.

"Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically?" Jiang asked. Jiang, who has worked for CBS News since 2015, was born in Xiamen, China, and emigrated to the United States with her family at age 2.

Trump said he would say that to "anyone who asks a nasty question."

"It’s not a nasty question," Jiang said. "Why does that matter?"

Trump again asked for another question, then said, "Nah, that’s OK" and waved off CNN’s Collins when she approached the microphone.

"You pointed to me," Collins said.

The president said, "I pointed to you and you didn’t respond." Collins said she was giving Jiang the time to finish her questioning.

#2  The press sets a metric -- ventilators, tests -- then hounds the president with questions about it. He gives them the numbers they claim to want, showing the US is exceeding the metric they set, then the press acts like Trump is obsessing over it.

#7  Just start banning the obnoxious ones and make a big deal out of it - start with Acosta and these two nitwts (Jiang & Collins). I heard that part of the speech and these two were flat-out obnoxious with the questions and the manner in which they were 'asked' (more like scolding).

#9  Why have these briefings at all? They are clearly dysfunctional and uninformative. Who chooses which members of the press attends such press conferences? The press. Chinese scholar calls for political reform. A day later, the police come for him
Tank Man, but without the tanks.
[SCMP] A constitutional scholar has been taken away by China’s authorities after writing an open letter to representatives of the country’s legislature, criticising the government’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak and calling for freedom of speech.

Zhang Xuezhong was removed from his Shanghai home on Sunday night, according to multiple sources. His letter, posted on WeChat on Saturday and addressed to deputies of the National People’s Congress (NPC), was widely circulated online as China prepares to convene its most important parliamentary sessions in less than two weeks’ time.

"He was taken away on Sunday night. Three police cars came to his house," said Wen Kejian, an independent political analyst.
"Youse won't have any trouble finding him-- just look for the guy carrying his balls in a wheelbarrow."

Trump orders federal retirement money invested in Chinese equities to be pulled
[Fox] President Trump is moving to cut investment ties between U.S. federal retirement funds and Chinese equities, FOX Business has learned in a move that is tied to the handling of COVID 19.

In the first letter written Monday, obtained exclusively by FOX Business, national security adviser Robert O’Brien and National Economic Council Chair Larry Kudlow write to U.S. Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia stating that the White House does not want the Thrift Savings Plan, which is a federal employee retirement fund, to have money invested in Chinese equities that numbers about $4 billion in assets.

US processing plants quadruple pork exports to China despite COVID-19 slowing down production by up to 40% and warnings of meat supply shortages for Americans
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Meat exports to China have quadrupled despite companies in the US warning of supply shortages for American consumers amid the coronavirus pandemic

  • President Donald Trump last month ordered meat processing plants across the US to remain open to protect the nation's food supply

  • An analysis of government data, however, has shown the plants have increasingly been exporting to China while Americans face shortages

  • Smithfield Foods, owned by China's WH Group Ltd, Brazilian-owned JBS USA and Tyson Foods Inc temporarily closed meat plants in the US due to infections

  • Closures and slowdown in production have reduced pork slaughter capacity by about 35 to 40 percent and beef slaughter capacity by about 30 to 40 percent

  • While the number of pigs slaughtered each day has plunged since mid-March, shipments of pork to China more than quadrupled over the same period
We objected when China confiscated American PPE factories over there, keeping the production for themselves...

‘Shop till you drop?' Luxury stores back in business as France eases lockdown
[France24] As France began to exit its strict coronavirus lockdown on Monday, many of its luxury brands also opened their doors, giving sanitary protocols a makeover and testing people’s appetite for splurging after a shutdown that has rocked economies worldwide.

"It’s a bit an act of faith today," said Edouard Lefebvre, who heads the business district on the Champs-Elysées avenue, packed with crowds of locals and foreign tourists in normal times.

Only half of the avenue’s shops were open Monday, Lefebvre said, reflecting the extensive preparations needed to safely receive customers and the hesitant steps many people took toward pre-pandemic routines.

"Clients won’t come back on day one. It takes time to get used to coming back to the Champs-Elysees, to come back to Paris," Lefebvre said in an interview with the Associated Press.

Still, pictures of long lines standing outside luxury stores, posted on social media later in the day, suggested many shoppers were willing to take the plunge.

"[C]ustomers seemingly ready to shop until they drop and consume like there is no tomorrow are queuing in front of the flagship of flagships, namely the Louis Vuitton Champs Elysées boutique," commented one Twitter user in a social media post.

Netanyahu suggests microchipping kids, slammed by experts
[Jerusalem Post] "If the information with the kids' location is uploaded to the internet, a pedophile with some cyber knowledge may invade the system and stalk them," cyber expert Einat Meron said.

Cyber experts slammed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his proposal to "microchip" children who return to schools and kindergartens as the coronavirus lockdown is lifted, Ynet reported on Friday.

While speaking at a press conference on Monday, Netanyahu suggested the Health Ministry use new technology to help Israel adjust to its new routine as the state is lifting the coronavirus lockdown. "That is, technology that has not been used before and is allowed under the legislation we shall enact," he clarified.

"I spoke with our heads of technology in order to find measures Israel is good at, such as sensors. For instance, every person, every kid — I want it on kids first — would have a sensor that would sound an alarm when you get too close, like the ones on cars," the prime minister said.

"It will be hard to do it to more than a million schoolchildren who return to their educational institutions in order to ensure one student sits at the distance of two meters from another. It is fictional and dangerous," cyber resilience expert Einat Meron told Ynet.

"Theoretically, I get the idea behind it," she said. "But although such distance-sensitive microchips exist in vehicles, it is different in humans." According to Meron, "a beeping sound telling me I got close to someone is not enough. Who says it will change anything? I would have gotten closer either way."

The expert added that "the actual issue is the enforcement, and here everything changes." Meron told Ynet that "microchipping children will not pass any test — both practically and legally." Similar to Meron's notion that notifying citizens on their distance will not affect their actions, many fear the state would make use of the information available from the sensors.

"If the information with the kids' location is uploaded to the internet, a pedophile with some cyber knowledge may invade the system and stalk them outside their schools, follow them and distribute the information on other platforms," Meron said. "Can the state take responsibility for that?"

The Prime Minister's Office responded to the report, telling Ynet Netanyahu's suggestion "is not to be implemented through databases, but through simple technology notifying [the citizens] about their distance. It is a voluntary option that is designed to help children keep their distance, like Mobileye with vehicles."

The office added that the prime minister's suggestion is "an idea that may help maintain social distancing, and there will not be any violation of privacy."....

US Special Operations arms surveillance aircraft for precision attack
[FoxNews] U.S. Special Operations Command is arming small, maneuverable surveillance planes to offer war commanders a precision-strike option supporting ground troops in rugged terrain with Hellfire missiles and laser-guided rockets.

If overhead fire support is able to identify and attack pockets of enemy fighters, fewer ground troops have to enter into enemy fire. Also, an overhead asset of this kind can be an intelligence node able to send targeting information and data regarding troop movements. When it comes to actual close-in counterinsurgency combat, fighters often obscure themselves in defilade or in buildings, requiring a need for precision strikes. Air to ground precision weapons can use a laser rangefinder and other kinds of advanced technologies.

One plane now operating is MAG Aerospace’s MC-208 Armed Caravan, a converted surveillance aircraft already in service with SOCOM and another in production for a U.S. allied international force. The Aircraft consists of a Textron-built airframe and MAG-integrated sensors, communications, avionics and weapons systems.

MAG’s armed surveillance aircraft is intended to meet a particular need because it can operate in close-in, nearly immediate coordination with the units it supports. Air attack or readily available surveillance, for instance, will not need to be called upon from less accessible fixed-runway-reliant aircraft. F-22s, F-16s, A-10s and even F-35s can be used for close-air-support, however they require a fixed, hard runway and are therefore less able to take off and land in rugged, uneven terrain in close proximity to SOF units on the ground. Also, the Pentagon seeks a produceable, less expensive aircraft that can perform these missions, freeing up 5th generation and other fixed-wing aircraft for operations in less permissive environments where air supremacy needs to be established -- such as enemy territory armed with advanced air defenses or fighter jets.

“There are plenty of countries that have an extremist threat -- the Middle East and South and Central Africa. SOCOM (Special Operations Command) is asking for this (armed surveillance planes) for Nigeria, Somalia and Libya. It is a perfect platform for where we are fighting,” Florida Congressman Rep. Michael Waltz told Warrior in an interview several months ago.

MAGs Armed Caravan is also being offered as part of a new SOCOM search to broadly acquire an “Armed Overwatch” attack aircraft. SOCOM is pursuing a phased strategy to develop this aircraft, the first phase of which includes MAG’s MC-208 Multi-Role Armed Caravan from MAG Aerospace and three other offerings from industry competitors…including L3’s AT-802 Longsword, Leidos, Paramount USA and Vertex Aerospace’s Bronco II Aircraft, Orbital ATKs AC-208 Eliminator. At the moment, the respective industry bidders have submitted White Papers as part of a broader SOCOM trajectory leading to an eventual flight demonstration of the aircraft.

US Army pushing to develop wearable sensors to detect coronavirus symptoms
(CNN) -- The US Army is asking technology companies to develop wearable sensors to detect early symptoms of coronavirus. This week they invited initial proposals for a $25 million contract to develop a device that uses existing technology as much as possible.

"There is a dire and urgent need for development of rapid, accurate wearable diagnostics to identify and isolate pre-symptomatic COVID-19 cases and track/prevent the spread of the virus," the Army said in an initial solicitation that was issued through a medical consortium.

Wherever the sensor is worn on the body, possibly on the wrist like a watch or on a shirt or belt, the aim is it will provide indicators of a fever, respiratory difficulties, "molecular biomarkers" of exposure to the virus and even the presence of antibodies against it.

If symptoms are detected then the service member can be fully tested, isolated and receive medical attention if necessary.

Anti-viral drug cocktail shows success clearing COVID-19 in 'seven days'
[Jpost] The three-drug cocktail consists of the HIV medication lopinavir-ritonavir, the hepatitis therapy drug ribavirin and the multiple sclerosis treatment interferon-beta.
It looks like a variety of treatments for the symptoms of the Wuhan Flu will work. And possibly the more the better.
Scientists in Hong Kong recently completed a clinical study in which they found that administering a cocktail of three different anti-viral medications to patients enduring mild coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
symptoms "may rapidly suppress the amount of virus in a patient's body."

The three-drug anti-viral cocktail is made up of the HIV medication lopinavir-ritonavir, the hepatitis therapy drug ribavirin and the multiple sclerosis treatment interferon-beta.

"Early triple antiviral therapy was safe and superior to lopinavir—ritonavir alone in alleviating symptoms and shortening the duration of viral shedding and hospital stay in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19," the study authors wrote, adding that "future clinical study of a double antiviral therapy with interferon beta-1b as a backbone is warranted" for a complete overview.

In the 127-patient study — conducted by Dr. Kwok-Yung Yuen at Hong Kong University and his research partners from February 10 to March 20, published in The Lancet medical journal — the 86 patients who were randomly assigned to the experimental group received the anti-viral cocktail, while the 41 patients assigned to the control group were solely administered the HIV therapy drug lopinavir-ritonavir - often known by the brand-name Kaletra.

The study was "open-label," meaning that the patients knew which drug they were receiving, without a placebo group.

Age, gender and baseline demographics in each group were "similar"; fever and a dry cough were among the most common symptoms observed.
Patients administered the cocktail tested negative for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, seven days after application.

"For the primary endpoint of time from start of study treatment to negative nasopharyngeal swab, the combination group had a significantly shorter median time (7 days) than the control group (12 days)," the study authors noted. "For the virological outcome, the combination treatment was associated with significantly shorter time to negative viral load in all specimens when assessed individually (nasopharyngeal swab, posterior oropharyngeal saliva, throat swab, and stool samples) as well as in all specimens combined. All urine samples tested negative for viral load."

Patients normally felt better within four days, with researchers adding that previously established side effects within the medications were being closely watched. The drugs, however, have a long-standing track record for safety, according to medical officials.

"Despite the concern of major side effects arising from a combination of three drugs, no significant differences in incidence of adverse events between treatment groups were reported in our cohort of 127 patients," the study authors wrote.

"No haemolysis occurred from the short duration of low dose ribavirin. We did not use triple combination for patients who started treatment 7 days or more after symptom onset because of the concerns about the proinflammatory side effects of interferon beta-1b — despite that at most, three doses were used for each patient," they added, noting that "liver dysfunction was observed in about 14% of these patients and it was mild and self-limiting, except in one patient in the control group, in whom the biochemical hepatitis warranted the discontinuation of lopinavir—ritonavir treatment."

The study was independently reviewed by experts, who concurred that the findings were positive, but larger clinical trials are warranted in their opinion for greater certainty regarding the cocktail's effectiveness.

HIV also has a long-standing record of being successfully treated by a cocktail of drugs, and medical experts purport this could also be the case with COVID-19, adding the results are promising and warrant adding interferon beta to the list of evidence-based treatments for the coronavirus.

2 arrested for allegedly ripping face masks off Jews in Brooklyn
[IS National News] Two people were arrested for allegedly ripping face masks off of identifiably Jewish people in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City.

The suspects have not yet been identified or been charged, NBC New York reported Monday morning.

The couple were later identified as Paulo Pinho, 35, and his wife, Clelia Pinho, 46, of Queens.

They were arrested on a charge of aggravated harassment as a hate crime, the New York Post reported.

They stopped their car after noticing a group of hasidic Jews on the corner, and got out while shouting what police described as anti-Semitic slurs, and complaining that many were not wearing masks or practicing appropriate social distancing. They then tried to remove the face masks of several men.

#5  Those look like Portuguese names... But according to another article I saw, the Karens had called 911 on the neighbourhood twice that day, then drove in looking for trouble. Got roughed up a bit in the process of being arrested, though whether that was the work of the neighbourhood volunteer guards or the police was not clear.

WH Advisor P. Navarro: ‘A [$10 Trillion] bill has to come due for China’... ‘Hold them accountable’
[CNBC] White House advisor Peter Navarro on Monday threatened retaliation against China for its role in the spread of the coronavirus pandemic as tensions between the world’s two largest economies continue to rise.

“A bill has to come due for China,” Navarro said during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “It’s not a question of punishing them, it’s a question of holding China accountable, the Chinese Communist Party accountable.”

Navarro is one of the chief China hawks in President Donald Trump’s administration and serves as the director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy.

He declined to say whether he was advising the president to impose new tariffs or scrap the “phase one” trade deal reached between the two countries earlier this year.

“They inflicted tremendous damage on the world which is still ongoing,” Navarro said. “We’re up to close to $10 trillion we’ve had to appropriate to fight this battle.”
