China's HNA Chairman Wang dies after fall during trip to France
[CNBC] China's HNA Group said on Wednesday that Wang Jian, a chairman and co-founder, died during a business trip in France on July 3 after a serious injury caused by a fall.

HNA, one of China's most acquisitive conglomerates which has been selling assets to slash debt, said that Wang, 57, suffered a fall in Provence and received medical treatment but did not recover.

A police source in France said Wang had died after a 10 meter fall off a wall while trying to take photographs in the village of Bonnieux, near Avignon.

He tried to climb a low wall to see the view and take pictures," the source said. After failing a first time, Wang took a run up. "He fell over the top and dropped 10 meters."

HNA, based on the southern Chinese island of Hainan is best known as the owner of Hainan Airlines Co and for holding stakes in Deutsche Bank AG and Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc.

Rantburg Shark Stories - Reporting from the NJ coast
[FOX] After about 7 hours of fishing for tuna 40 miles off the coast of New Jersey on Sunday, fisherman Chris O'Neill and three other crew members decided to come closer to shore and search for mako sharks, a popular game fish in the area.

The group ‐ which included Chris' uncle Joe, Sam Messler and Robert McLaughlin ‐ put out three fishing lines at 20, 40 and 65 feet deep. After about 45 minutes, O'Neill noticed the 40-foot reel start to turn. The crew waited quietly for about two minutes before the reel started to scream.

"We started reeling it in. At first, we didn't know what we had, though we were hoping it was mako," O'Neill, of Little Egg Harbor, told Fox News.

Woman discovered alive inside mortuary refrigerator
[NYDAILYNEWS] A South African woman was mistakenly brought to the morgue and stored in a fridge after she was declared dead following a car accident.
It's been awhile since we've had one of these stories.
The unnamed woman was discovered breathing by a morgue worker who was reportedly writing a report and checking on the body, according to TimesLive, a South African news site. The Distress Alert paramedics who brought her in said that she had shown “no form of life.” She is currently being treated at a hospital.

“There is no proof of any negligence by our crew,” Distress Alert operations manager Gerrit Bradnick told TimesLive. "This did not happen because our paramedics are not properly trained. Equipment used to determine life showed no form of life on the woman."

Two other people involved in the June 24 crash were dead, according to Bradnick.
And stayed that way.

Rantburg Shark Stories - Reporting From Cape Cod, MA
"You're in the water, sharks in the water..."

[Mass Live] - The Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" special may be toward the end of July, but on Massachusetts famed southeastern peninsula, the shark activity is already well underway.

In less than a week, from Wednesday June 27 through Tuesday, July 3, researchers have reported nearly a dozen white shark sightings off of Cape Cod, which sees some of its highest tourism times during the Fourth of July week. On Monday alone, five great white shark sightings were reported along the outer peninsula, forcing a temporary beach closure at Head of the Meadow Beach.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy's "Sharktivity" map, designed by a team of Cape Cod officials and wildlife researchers, reports 11 white shark sightings across Cape waters in the last week. The sightings span from Chatham waters on the southern tip of the Cape to miles north near Provincetown. Two other unconfirmed sightings were also reported.

New York Times Reassigns Reporter Who Had Sexual Relationship With Source
[THEWRAP] The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

has reassigned news hound Ali Watkins after news emerged last month that she had a sexual relationship with a source while she was at her previous employer BuzzFeed.

"We are troubled by Ali’s conduct, particularly while she was employed by other news organizations," said Times executive editor Dean Baquet in an internal memo on Tuesday. "For a news hound to have an intimate relationship with someone he or she covers is unacceptable. It violates our written standards and the norms of journalism."

Trump pulls the plug on funding corrupt Zim opposition
[NewZimbabwe] In a move that could pose a major set-back for the opposition in Zimbabwe ahead of crucial general elections the United States has pulled the plug on leading human rights and election lobby groups amid revelations of financial plunder.

The Donald Trump administration, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) cut financial support to poll lobby group the Election Resource Centre headed by Tawanda Chimhini, Okay Machisa's Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights), the Counselling Services Unit which provides psycho-social support to victims of political violence and corruption watchdog Transparency International Zimbabwe among others.
Why the hell are we even interfering in their elections in the first place?
While the US Embassy in Harare was not immediately available for comment an official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development.

"It's true. There has been widespread plunder of do not funds by local non-governmental organisations. Most of the executives of these organisations carted away large sums of cash and bought themselves houses as well as vehicles," New Zimbabwe was told.

It has also emerged that the US Embassy has also resorted to confiscation of vehicles and other properties to recoup part of the abused funds.

"The boards and executives in these organisations have colluded to plunder millions meant for either human rights work, opposition capacity building funnelled through these groups and you electoral programs across the country.

"It's a sordid tale that USAid is not proud of. They are sitting on a damming report now which could be explosive if it is leaked," said another close source.
Look at all the comments, Zimbabweans are applauding the move.

Britain
Amesbury: Two collapse near Russian spy poisoning site
[BBC] A man and woman are in a critical condition after being exposed to an unknown substance, which counter terrorism officers are investigating.

The pair, in their 40s, were found unconscious in what was thought to be in a drugs-related incident in Amesbury, Wiltshire, on Saturday.

It is understood tests are being carried out on the substance at a government chemical weapons laboratory.

Amesbury is about 10 miles from the Salisbury Russian spy poisoning site.

Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with Novichok, a suspected military nerve agent, in March.

The substance Novichok was identified by the defence research facility at Porton Down which is understood to be carrying out tests on the latest substance.

The Met said counter terrorism officers are now working with Wiltshire Police "given the recent events in Salisbury".

Europe
Better than oil
H/t Gates of Vienna
More than 20 billion dollars (17.7 billion euros) flowed from Germany back to countries of origin in 2016, which is six billion more than in 2007.

While the German government sees it as a type of developmental aid, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, that requested the investigation on the matter, is sceptical.

According to the party recipients of state benefits should be banned from passing on money to their home countries."It cannot be that development aid from the German social system is financed," AfD spokesman Markus Frohnmaier says.

But Germany’s Government considers the remittances to be "development-promoting", because the money arrives directly at the place where it is needed, Die Welt writes.

'Take your kids with you, or just leave!'
[PRESSTV] A newly obtained US government document reveals that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been instructed to ask migrants colonists to choose one of two options: Leave without your children, or take them, too.

They read a form for the undocumented immigrants colonists, who have previously separated from their kids, asking them whether they want their children or not, NBC News reported Tuesday.

"I am requesting to reunite with my child(ren) for the purpose of repatriation to my country of citizenship" or "I am affirmatively, knowingly, and voluntarily requesting to return to my country of citizenship without my minor child(ren) who I understand will remain in the United States to pursue available claims of relief."
