R.I.P. The Last Ramone is Gone
Tommy Erdelyi, who passed away Friday of bile duct cancer at age 65, never forgot how thrilling it was to be a Ramone during the band's formative days. "I thought what we were doing was unique and exciting and potentially influential," he recalled last October. "I was also originally the manager, so I had a broad perspective on what was going on. I knew what the band had. It felt like we were on the front edge of something important, and something bigger was going to happen."

#1  Thanks mods for posting this, damn that band meant a lot to me. I didn't feel the sense of loss after Joey! Johnny or DeeDee had passed. I guess it's they are all gone.

Many have tried but few will pound the hell out three cords, punish the drums and be vocally incoherent for a blissful 2 and a minutes with that energy. They drug out of the doldrums, in high school, of Elton John, ELO, the carpenters, Billy Joel and made me realize this is rock and roll.

From there i went to Athens and got REM, love tractor, concrete blonde, and the B52s,

But without the Ramones i may not have ever looked for them...

#2  Yes sir, Beavis. These guys (and DEVO) blew the doors off of my mainstream Aerosmith, Led Zep, Pink Floyd musical world in high school forever. R.I.P. Ramones!

Egypt Police Arrest Man for Raping Russian Tourist
[An Nahar] Egyptian police said Saturday they have enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
a driver for raping a Russian tourist in a resort town, as the government cracks down on an epidemic of sexual harassment and violence.

Police said the mini-bus driver raped the woman after pretending the vehicle had broken down, to trick her husband into getting off before speeding off with his intended victim.

The incident took place in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh, where the tourism ministry had previously shut down two hotels over alleged rapes.

In Cairo, police said Saturday they have arrested a low-ranking officer who groped a Tunisian woman at Cairo airport.

The government recently passed a law imposing harsher penalties for sexual crimes.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi pledged to crack down on such crimes, after footage circulated of men sexually assaulting a woman during a rally.

Thirteen men have been put on trial over that attack and others during rallies in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Robert Mugabe's racial decree on whites and land brings backlash
[CSMONITOR] The Zim-bob-we Independent today castigated the president's speech, in which Mugabe's "voice was dark and foreboding when he said 'we will have no mercy for white people regarding the land, they cannot own our soil.'"

The Independent, the leading financial paper from Harare, quoted analyst Dumisani Nkomo saying that Mugabe "was addressing party supporters and therefore should not be taken seriously."

Yet the presidents statements are "against the letter and spirit of the new constitution and as such should not be tolerated in any democratic society," Mr. Nkomo said, adding that the remarks were "not helpful for a country such as Zim-bob-we which has been struggling for many years to re-invent itself as an investor-friendly destination."

Prior to Mugabe's violent land reform policy in 2000, the nation was a fruitful breadbasket to Africa, but now has to import food aid for 10 percent of its population, according to Harvard expert and Monitor blogger Robert Rotberg.

Not taken seriously? The same could be said of our Champ, but you would be dreadfully wrong in both cases. Tribalism is the most basic form of communism. It flows through their veins, fueled by the hate of western civilization and the white man.

Two Dead in Fresh Karabakh Border Clashes
[An Nahar] An ethnic Armenian separatist officer in Nagorny Karabakh and an Azerbaijani soldier died in the latest raid along the disputed region's volatile frontline, the rebel defense ministry said Saturday.

Several other Azerbaijani soldiers were captured in the fighting, breakaway Armenian forces said, although Baku has made no comment on the claims.

A 37-year-old Armenian woman, Movses Gasparian, was seriously maimed in the shootout, rebels claimed.

At least 18 soldiers have been killed in a surge in violence along the border since the beginning of the year, with snipers frequently exchanging fire across the frontier.

Most have died in tit-for-tat commando raids. The dead Armenian officer was named as 42-year-old Major Sargis Abrahamyan.

The rebels claimed on Thursday that they had captured another Azerbaijani soldier after a separate raid. Baku, however, said the man named as captured was not a member of their forces.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea made it to the World Cup final! Wait, what?
[TORONTOSUN] Despite not qualifying for 2014 World Cup, North Korea has reached the final, according to state media.

Make sense?

While the rest of the world is sitting tight in anticipation of Sunday's Germany-Argentina tilt here in Rio, North Koreans have reportedly been told their country's soccer team has been dominant at this summer's event.

A video posted to YouTube channel Korea News Backup, which features reports from North Korea's state-run media, appears to show a newscaster reporting on North Korea's fictitious success at the World Cup.

The sequence shows "highlights" of North Korea's 7-0 win over Japan, 4-0 win over the United States and 2-0 win over China, all of which didn't take place, of course.

The rhetoric also contains video of North Korea's Supreme Leader, Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, being superimposed over the big screen at a FIFA Fanfest while receiving rounds of applause from World Cup fans.

North Korea last competed at a World Cup in 2010, losing all three games to Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal.

During that tournament, North Korean media reported their country's national team defeated Brazil 1-0 even though Brazil won the match 2-1.
They might well have beaten Brazil this week...
There are only a few holes in North Korean media's attempt to falsify results, the main one being the fact Asian teams can't play each other in the group stage.

North Korea failed to make it to the final round of Asian qualifying ahead of this summer's World Cup, losing twice to Uzbekistan and drawing lowly Tajikistan.

North Korea is currently ranked 146th in the world, 36 spots behind Canada.

Ukrainian authorities struggle to win favor after rebel withdrawal from Slovyansk
[Washington Post] Ukraine's government trumpeted the rebels' recent retreat from this key crossroads town as a major victory in their months-long battle against Death Eaters in the east.

But as Slovyansk's residents clean up the rubble from destroyed homes and businesses, triumph is far from people's minds. The fighting appears far from over; central authority is largely absent; and many of this nation's long-felt divisions are deeper than ever.

Police are barely present in Slovyansk, and security bigshots say that they are unsure who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city. The rebels have moved on to the much larger city of Donetsk, with its nearly 1 million people, posing an even larger challenge to a disorganized army.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village the snowball down Jack's back had finally melted......
the same skepticism about the government in Kiev that made Slovyansk a fertile ground for separatists is as present as ever.

"The Ukrainian army can't aim properly," said Ilya Lazarenko, 25, who was trying to salvage food from what used to be the kitchen in his once-elegant home at an intersection near Slovyansk. The top floor was blown away, leaving scraps of the metal roof creaking in the wind, a casualty of poor targeting by government artillery, he said.

"They could have been more careful,'' he said.

The pro-Russian separatists had held several government buildings in Slovyansk since mid-April in what became the centerpiece of the rebel uprising in this heavily culturally Russian region. The February ouster of Russian-friendly president Viktor Yanukovych only deepened fears in eastern Ukraine that ethnic Russians would be targeted with discrimination or worse, and the flames were fanned by Russian state-backed media, which depicted Ukraine's new pro-European rulers as neo-Nazis.

Iran Protesters Demand Respect for the Veil, Chastity
[An Nahar] Several hundred people demonstrated in Iran's capital on Saturday to demand that state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
boost "the culture of the veil and chastity" in its programming.

Protesters denounced the presence of "badly veiled" women in soap operas and said women wearing the traditional full-body chador were often depicted as poor and uncultivated.

Under Islamic law in force in Iran since the 1979 revolution, women must wear loose clothing and a hijab, a veil covering the hair and neck.

A police "morality" unit is responsible for enforcing the law, and can impose fines or even arrest those who defy it.

But recent years have seen many women wear a thin veil that hardly covers the hair, tight clothing or coats reaching mid-thigh instead of the long coat or chador.
