Amish terrorist denied bail
A breakaway Amish leader, Samuel Mullet Sr., charged in beard-cutting attacks on fellow Plain folk complained Monday that the government is trying to demonize him to keep him locked up, but a judge again rejected pretrial release.
And this is after he agreed to have his farm electrified for his electronic shackles.
U.S. District Dan Aaron Polster responded with a brief order rejecting the defense request to reconsider release on bond.
This is from the Ay Pee, so I'm sure it is without error. But somehow I suspect Polster is not the U. S. District
Prosecutors say Mullet is a risk to flee and poses a danger to the community.
They don't call him Sam the Scissor Man for nothing.
The government said earlier that Mullet could not be trusted to appear in court when ordered and sending officers to his Bergholz farm near Steubenville could lead to "the risk of tragic consequences."
Living near Steubenville is tragic enough.
Mullet and 11 followers are charged in five beard- and hair-cutting attacks on other Amish last year. All 12 have pleaded not guilty. Seven are jailed without bond.
Seven! How many of them are from West Virginia, sanctuary state for Amish terrorists?
"Undoubtedly, the government is attempting to harken memories of Waco, Texas, where the Branch Davidians, at David Koresh's command, resisted Mr. Koresh's arrest by an armed conflict."
Hard to believe Holder is throwing away the chance to one up Janet Reno.
Bryan disputed the characterization of Mullet's farm as a fortified compound and said Mullet doesn't have a weapons stockpile.
How many pair of scissors and shearers does he have?
"There is no walled 'compound' or single facility where individuals can barricade themselves against law enforcement officers executing arrest warrants," the defense filing said.
Them hills can get pretty steep there. Makes it tough to get an armored vehicle in if they decide to burn the place down.
A feud over church discipline allegedly led to attacks in which the beards and hair of men and hair of women were cut, which is considered deeply offensive in Amish culture.

The seven-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy, assault and evidence tampering in what prosecutors say were hate crimes motivated by religious differences.
At least he didn't throw a shoe at anybody. Or do they wear clogs?

#4  If the group's 'hair-cutting attacks' resulted in a style on the victim that emulated their leader's surname, then the whole breakaway movement should be relocated to San Francisco (where hilarity would undoubtedly ensue).

Bangladesh
BNP walks away from Sangsad
[Bangla Daily Star] Opposition leader Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
was present at only six out of 254 sittings of the current parliament in the last three years. Lawmakers of the BNP-led opposition seem to have performed much better than their leader by attending 51 sittings in the same period.

It remains uncertain, though, whether the opposition MPs will be regular in joining the House proceedings in the remaining two years or will continue their current strategy about dodging the proceedings.

If the political situation does not improved significantly --- and that is what the signs suggest --- the culture of boycotting parliament may reach a new height, exceeding all previous records.

The BNP-led opposition MPs opted for boycotting the House in phases. In the first phase, they started to stay away from the House in June 2009. The boycott continued till February 2010. Having remained absent for 64 consecutive sittings, on February 11, 2010 they returned to Parliament.

A fresh boycott commenced in June 2010 and did not end till March 16, 2011, by which time the opposition had been away from 74 consecutive sittings. They stormed out of the House on March 24 and have not returned since then. In the current, third phase they have already boycotted over 48 consecutive sittings, that is, till last session prorogued on November 30 last year.

Information available suggests that in opposition, Awami League MPs in the fifth Parliament boycotted 135 out of 400 sittings. In the seventh Parliament, the opposition BNP MPs missed 163 out of total 382 sittings. Again, opposition AL politicians boycotted 223 out of 373 sittings of the eighth parliament's five year tenure.

Russian TV Channel To Air Assange Talk Show
The Russian English-language channel RT, which is funded by the Russian government, says it has the rights to air a new television chat show that will be hosted by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

A spokeswoman for the channel, formerly known as Russia Today, told the AFP news agency that RT had the rights to air the episodes of the chat show first.

The channel did not elaborate, saying that "details of the episodes and the guests featured are secret for now."

WikiLeaks announced the show on January 24, saying it would begin airing in March.

The Soviets did propaganda like that, highlighting protests against segregation and the Viet Nam war. People under Soviet domination also noticed that those pictured were well dressed, well fed, and their environment obviously much more prosperous than in their People's Paradise. Not to mention that, in the West, protestors weren't simply shot down like dogs.

Jay Leno & NBC Sued Over Mitt Romney Joke
Jay Leno showed a picture of the Golden Temple, a Sikh holy shrine in Amritsar, India with the tagline "Mitt Romney's summer home". The Sikhs
a Warrior Religion
were not amused.
Political speech is protected by the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution so, IMHO, the suit doesn't have a leg to stand on. Lighten up! Clearly no offense to the Sikhs was intended. To the contrary, the splendor of the shrine is what made the joke work.

Five policemen escape after bail pleas dismissal
[Dawn] Five coppers, including a DSP, managed to escape following the dismissal of their pre-arrest bail applications by a district and sessions court in a custodial killing case on Monday.

The five coppers -- DSP Hafeez Junejo, Inspector Hadi Bux, Sub-Inspector Malik Mohammad Ashraf and Assistant Sub-Inspectors Aftab Ahmed and Chaudhry Javed Akthar -- have been booked for their alleged involvement in the killing of a suspect, Krishan Chand, who was found dead in the Sharea Faisal cop shoppe's lock-up on Nov 4, 2008.

Earlier, the Sindh High Court had granted interim pre-arrest bail to the police officials. Later, the matter was referred to the district and sessions judge (east) with a direction to decide it.

On a previous hearing, the court heard arguments from both sides on the bail pleas and reserved the matter for confirmation or otherwise for Jan 23.

District and Sessions Judge (east) Sadiq Hussain Bhatti dismissed the pre-arrest bail applications of the suspects on Monday.

As soon as the court pronounced its order, the suspects managed to escape from the courtroom without facing any resistance as the investigation officer of the case apparently made no effort to arrest them.

#2  Is it more moral to induce an economic panic through sanctions, or to just bomb the f* out of the nuclear sites?

#3  Iran increased bank interest rates on Wednesday and indicated it would further restrict sales of foreign currency, hoping to halt a spiraling currency crisis after new Western sanctions accelerated a dash for dollars by Iranians worried about their economic future.

"The economy minister has announced that (Iranian President Mahmoud) Nutjob Ahmadinejad has agreed with the approval of the Money and Credit Council to increase interest rates on bank deposits to up to 21 percent," the official IRNA news agency reported. "Keep 'em where we can sieze 'em."

The central bank also told Iranians they should only buy dollars if they are travelling and not hoard them to guard against economic uncertainty.

So Iran has its own version of the Fed? They're doomed.

Any bets on which Fed gets dissolved first?
