Egyptian oil spill in the Red Sea has caused a new environmental catastrophe, prompting an outcry among activists that call for tighter offshore regulations.
Huge quantities of crude gushing from Egypt's offshore platforms in the Red Sea have reached the coasts of Egyptian tourist hub Hurghada, AFP reported.
Hurghada attracts millions of tourists for diving and snorkeling, the report says.
Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Agency (HEPCA) says the leak started about 4-5 days ago but the companies in charge, covered up the "catastrophic" incident.
Officials have declined to reveal the name of the liable companies, the report said.
Egypt's environment and tourism ministries state that the leak is contained and preparations have been made to clean up the pollution.
HEPCA, however, criticized the government's insufficient reaction. It called for a clearer plan of action to prevent further environmental disasters.
"We would also like to see more stringent standards imposed on these offshore platforms to ensure natural areas are protected," said HEPCA Managing Director Amr Ali.
In recent weeks, oil spills from offshore rigs have caused severe environmental disasters across the globe.
The United States is embroiled in its worst environmental disaster after BP's Deepwater Horizon collapsed, gushing about a million gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico.
Elsewhere in Nigeria, the government has threatened to levy punitive sanctions against ExxonMobil, if the giant US oil company fails to contain the crude spills from offshore platforms in Nigeria's southeast Akwa Ibom State.

Robert Gibbs said that the ruling will be appealed. Obama is having to deal with lawsuits on all sides; health care, immigration, gun laws. It is not a place an administration wants to find itself. Bodes well for the elections in November.

Yesterday NPR did an interview with a faculty member of Tulane University where he detailed the number of job losses as a result of the drilling ban. He was conservative at 30,000. Today they added the caveat that Tulane received money from Chevron, thereby "invalidating" the man's conclusions. If you take money from oil, you are a liar. So that makes Obalooney a Liar.

an AP investigation found earlier this month that more than half the federal judges in the districts affected by the BP spill have financial ties to the oil and gas industry.
Is this any different than the entire population of investors? Lots and lots of people have money in oil & gas related businesses, even if only through a mutual fund.

A certain logic exists that buying 'US' sends the profit back to the US, but in this so-called 'global economy' and, as the liberals would have it, 'free-trade system', that supports the shipping of jobs overseas, there is little comfort in buying decisions based on 'barcodes' that still may send $$ overseas, for manufacturing (not to mention shareholders).
Consumers need to be more savvy than simply relying on 'barcodes'...

Read the label. All products, except unpackaged food, show the country of origin. It just may be nobody has seen a "Made in USA" label in many years, but it does exist.

A good point. I mentioned the bar codes for orientation purposes where the country of manufacture is not stated on the product label or the product is distributed by a trading company within US & CA. For instance, pet food. You simply want to avoid Chinese made pet food. The bar code is a good indicator.

I'm a big fan of data matrix bar codes. It is public domain, scalable, and can hold over 3,300 extended alphanumeric characters. It can be encrypted just by using encrypted text, and includes error checking.
I can see a big use for it as the reverse side of scrip currency, if the dollar goes nuts with deflation or inflation. As such it would be a totally price and value controlled currency, literally registered to an individual until transferred. So no black market, and the currency can be printed on plain paper.
You could carry the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars on a thumb drive, and nobody could use them but you, with an authorized retailer. If your money is lost or destroyed, just print some more.
