Bullet hits Lou Dobbs' NJ home with wife nearby
Part of an A-Pee article. You know the drill. Here's a quote:
Dobbs says he had been receiving threatening phone calls for weeks. On his radio show, he connected the gunshot to his advocacy for a crackdown on illegal immigration and to his opponents' rhetoric.
"Paging Nancy Pelosi to the white courtesy phone. It's time for another urgent reality check and it would be nice if you didn't skip out on it again."

This aspect of the story to be all over the Legacy Media tomorrow I'm sure.

Robbers caught using 'the worst disguise ever'
It's been labelled the worst disguise ever - two men arrested over a burglary attempt in the US were found with fake beards and masks scrawled on their faces with a permanent marker.

Police stopped the car of Matthew McNelly, 23, and Joey Miller, 20 after it matched the description of a vehicle used by two men who allegedly tried to break into an Iowa apartment last Friday night. When officers looked inside the 1994 Buick Roadmaster, they were surprised to find the men with masks, beards and moustaches painted on their face in some sort of rudimentary disguise.

"It's a little weird," police chief Jeff Cayler told Radio Iowa. "I've been here long enough that I've seen a lot of things, but this one's a little different compared to most ... I mean, just the face thing is what sets it apart."

Mugshots of the pair show the black ink scribbles on their faces.

A number of US blogs, including the popular Huffington Post, described it as "the worst disguise ever".

The men may have been under the influence of alcohol when they devised the idea for their disguises. "For what it's worth, it appeared they had both been drinking quite a bit and maybe weren't thinking quite rationally," Mr Cayler said. One of the men also believed the owner of the apartment they were trying to rob was dating his girlfriend, he said.

McNelly and Miller were each charged with attempted second-degree burglary and released on bail.

No, really?

#2  It's not a disguise. They passed out drunk and someone scribbled on their faces with a permanent marker. It's a "prank" quite popular with these kids today.

Just another "media stupid" moment. One of thousands this year alone.

#3  I agree that this was probably a prank pulled on drunk kids. Drunk kids that may have robbed a house the week before. I mean if they wanted a disguise, you'd think with Halloween and all, they could have had their pick.

#4  Frankly, I wonder why disguises aren't used more often. A wig or toupe (or baldcap) and beard if properly applied could be convincing from a distance (on camera) or with the shakey memories associated with a crime. Even if it's clear the person is wearing a disguise at least the witnesses didn't actually see the face so identification has to be harder. Combine that with gloves and other things to prevent fingerprints (they won't check for DNA unless you kill someone or steal the hope diamond or something). I mean every advantage you can get.

Or you could just film the crime and put it on youtube or something. Whatever floats your boat.

There are quite good algorithms now for identifying people from things like their characteristic walk and posture, combined with body size etc.

Young mom's death exposes H1N1 dangers
The night before Jamie Loveless got sick, she ate at a little pizza place in Madeira Beach, Fla., with her family. She walked along the boardwalk, visited the shops and had some ice cream.

She had been running a low fever off and on all week, but it seemed like nothing to be concerned about. Still, when she woke up feeling achy on Friday morning, it seemed like skipping the beach to rest would be best.

Saturday afternoon, Jamie Loveless, 27, was admitted to St. Petersburg General Hospital with pneumonia that doctors said probably developed from the H1N1 virus. The illness attacked her lungs and escalated rapidly. At 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the mother from Middle Tennessee died, leaving behind her husband, Chris, her 9-month-old son, Gavin, and a lot of disbelief.

#1  My area has only received a fraction of the promised doses. The vaccine is just not available here...to the healthy or to those with underlying health problems.

#2  Important mention to doctors if family members get sick.

1) Give patient Avelox against secondary bacterial infection. (Important: odd potential side effects)

http://www.rxlist.com/avelox-drug.htm

2) Be prepared to provide external blood oxygenation. Ventilation may not be enough, as lung impairment is in many cases preventing absorption of oxygen. XBO is saving lives.

3) Lung damage is often not seen on X-Rays, but is seen on CT scans, so do not rely on X-Ray diagnosis.

4) Primary at risk groups are infants and very young children; children of all ages with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes; older and healthy children who have recently been involved with aerobic exercise, going dangerously acute one day later; pregnant women; the elderly at risk for pneumonia.

#3  The fluoroquinolones, such as Cipro and Levaquin, etc. all carry risks of tendon rupture. People have to balance the risk of tendon rupture with perhaps fatal complications from this flu. Older people don't seem to be so much at risk for H1N1 perhaps because of a immunity acquired during swine flu bouts in the 1950s and 1970s. The vaccine is not available in our area (East Tennessee) so far as I know. Even physicians who I know have not been inoculated at this date. The woman who died in middle Tennessee had a nine month old child. Her immune system might have been compromised as the result of lack of sleep and other possible factors which might affect her immune system. Here, we have had school nurse and a man in his late 40s die from H1N1 complications.

Does anyone know how effective the antiviral Tamiflu is? I understand it helps if administered early.

#6  A six-year-old girl without underlying illness died of H1N1 in the next county over. They closed schools for a week to clean them and the busses (and because so many kids and teachers were out sick).

I think the disease may have affected the girl's lungs; her mother was interviewed on the TV and talked about watching her struggle to breath. Very sad.

Shots aren't available here (central Virginia) to normal people. They were giving them in some elementary schools but ran out early (didn't get as many doses as they ordered). I think health care people in the area have gotten the vaccination, but am not sure.

I've stocked up on hand sanitizer, but I do that anyway.

#7  There's some evidence that H1N1 may spread more easily through the air than through touch .... if a serious outbreak occurs in your area, wearing masks in public (as do the Japanese) would be prudent. Don't reuse them - once you return home discard the one you're wearing and use a clean one when you go out again.

At a distance, the basic and inexpensive surgical masks help a bit. The N95 grade masks are uncomfortable to wear for a long time and are more expensive. But if you're caring for someone who becomes seriously ill with this strain, do consider N95 grade masks and disposable gloves.

#8  Thanks for the info, lotp. My biggest concern (if it is a concern) is a large craft fair I'm doing for 4 days next week. Tens of thousands of people will come through the place, and thousands of then will come through my booth.

I'll use my hand sanitizer, of course, since money is so filthy, and I generally keep away from coughing people anyway. I know this sounds stupid, but I tend to occasionally put hand sanitizer up my nose when around a lot of people. It probably doesn't do anything. Not much else I can do, I guess.

#10  Barbara, could you get a small fan, battery operated if necessary, and orient it so that there's a gentle breeze pushing air away from your face? Amazon and other online places sell these.

I know the margin on crafts but if you can spend the $16 or so plus shipping, it might help keep the droplets that transmit the virus from reaching you when browsers / customers lean in over your stock.

Ukraine Experiencing Severe Influenza-Related Hemorrhagic Epidemic
The Health Ministry has confirmed 33 deaths from flu and acute respiratory viral infection in Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lviv regions since October 19, the Health Ministry said.

As of 9:00 am, October 30, the number of infected people was 81,000, of them 33,500 are children. A total of 2,341 people were hospitalized, including 1,100 children.

According to the Health Ministry, the risk groups include able-bodied people, pregnant women, minors and elderly people.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Health Ministry has declared an epidemic of the A(H1N1) influenza in Ukraine.

After the declaration, Yuschenko wrote to Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to request allocation of funds from the state budget for financing constant monitoring of the spread of influenza viruses, including the A(H1N1) influenza virus, as well as for financing proper operations of viral laboratories belonging to the State Sanitary and epidemiological Service and health institutions in all regions of Ukraine.
Most of the news is in Russian. Highlights include extensive quarantines and public closings, activation of military medical system, public panic, lungs of the dead filled with blood. They may have a mutation of the flu of the subtype "California". They are officially requesting the help of the WHO.

#1  lungs of the dead filled with blood

An article awhile back stated an autopsy of an apparently healthy man that died of H1N1 showed many tiny blood clots blocking his bronchioles but they didn't show up in a normal x-ray and was treated for pneumonis with no response. A CT scan did reveal the hemorrhaging but this is not typically done. The article on the Tennessee mom above stated it started with pneumonia but also didn't respond to treatment and it rapidly progressed to multiple organ failure. Any chance this was not bacterial and why antibiotics and anti-viral Tamiflu are ineffective?

'Interfering' police killed in Congo
Armed villagers in the northern Democratic Republic of Congo have killed at least 47 policemen who were trying to intervene in ethnic clashes.

"They've been fighting over fishing ponds. We know that there were clashes. There was fighting with machetes and with hunting rifles, but at present we don't know how many dead there are," said Lambert Mende, DR Congo's information minister.

The fighting took place between residents of Iyele and Muzaya villages.

According to Col. Joly Limengo, the police inspector for Equateur province, some of the villagers were ex-combatants from rebel movements and others had been recently released from the army.
Boys will be boys, dontcha know.
Authorities and police confirmed the violence had taken place but could not comment on the condition of the victims.

Mediators move to revive Zimbabwe unity govt
[Mail and Globe] African mediators were set to meet on Friday with President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in a bid to revive Zimbabwe's unity deal, paralysed over the arrest of an aide to the premier.

Tsvangirai, the former opposition leader, joined the unity government with his long-time rival in February hoping to end political violence and halt the nation's economic freefall.

Two weeks ago he suspended cooperation with Mugabe's Zanu-PF party in protest over the arrest of Roy Bennett, his nominee for deputy agriculture minister.

"All we want is Zanu-PF to honour part of their bargain as stated," Nelson Chamisa, spokesperson for Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), said.

"We hope that there is going to be an objective assessment" by the mediators, he said. "The situation on the ground is not good."

A team from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) arrived in Harare on Wednesday in hopes of breaking the deadlock.

Mediators, led by Mozambican Foreign Minister Oldemiro Baloi, met on Thursday with negotiators from each party, and were set to hold talks late on Friday with the two leaders, according to SADC.

Mugabe's party accuses the MDC of failing to lobby Western nations for the lifting of a travel ban and asset freeze on the president and about 200 of his family members and allies.

Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa, who met with the negotiators on Thursday, told state media that the sanctions on Mugabe's inner circle were the main threat to the unity deal.

Caribbean-Latin America
The US gets seven Colombian bases
The US is to open seven military bases in Colombia. The deal was sealed in Bogota today, a relatively swift passage to signature after the idea was only suggested at the end of August.

America has the green light for a deployment of 800 service personnel and 600 civilians.

Just the August offer was enough to spark a fierce regional response, but it was made after neighbour Ecuador demanded the US close its only base there.

The US and Colombia are struggling with drugs barons and a counter-insurgency campaign, and Manta's closure robbed their forces of surveillance flights over the Pacific and elsewhere.

Now one of the new bases gets a heavy lifter runway for C5 Galaxies. All are on a 10-year lease.

Ecuador and fellow left-wing neighbour Venezuela are the twitchiest over this military build-up, with Hugo Chavez particularly vocal in his criticisms. He has recently obtained nearly 100 Russian tanks and rocket launchers with money borrowed from Russia.

Toys don't make up for competent and experience military. Colombia appears to have the most experience one in that region. I wouldn't recommend testing it out with one lead by those deemed 'politically reliable' rather than effective.

Minister replaces sacked Haitian PM
[Iran Press TV Latest] Haiti's president has turned to a member of his Cabinet to replace the prime minister, who was abruptly removed by a Senate vote.

Haiti's President Rene Preval designated planning minister Jean-Max Bellerive as the new prime minister Friday after Haitian lawmakers ousted the government of Michele Pierre-Louis. Bellerive's appointment must be ratified by the Senate.

Preval informed congressional leaders of Bellerive's appointment at a meeting at the national palace.

Senate President Kelly Bastien told reports that Bellerive would likely be swiftly approved 'so as not to create a political vacuum'.

It was the Senate that voted early Friday to oust Prime Minister Michele Pierre-Louis amid a power struggle that threatens to undermine the campaign to attract foreign investment to the impoverished country. Pierre-Louis was removed when 18 of 29 senators voted for censure and dissolved the Cabinet.

Critics accused Pierre-Louis of failing to do enough to alleviate poverty, though the vote also reflects a struggle among senators for leadership roles as some of them plan to run for president next year.

Brazil tribe finds plane crash survivors
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Brazilian Air Force has confirmed that a native Amazonian tribe found a missing military plane and some survivors.

According to the Air Force, the plane landed on the Itui River, in Amazon, and was found by Indians from the Matis tribe. It says members of the Matis tribe spotted the wreckage of the single propeller Cessna C-98 along with nine survivors. The tribe then alerted local authorities.

The body of one of the passengers has been located, but one of the crew members is still missing.

Eleven people were traveling in the aircraft including four military and seven National Health Foundation (Funasa) employees. The group was participating in a Health Ministry operation to vaccinate over 3,700 Indians from various tribes in the Javari Valley region, as well as other inhabitants of distant areas.

The officials were heading to a variety of indigenous communities as part of the vaccination campaign.

The area is home to a handful of Indian tribes that have little contact with the outside world.

Europe
EU paving the way for 'European empire'
European Union leaders have cleared a major obstacle holding up the massive Lisbon reform treaty, paving the way for a new-look EU with its first-ever president.

At talks in Brussels, the leaders approved a proposal to satisfy a last-minute demand by Czech President Vaclav Klaus for his country to win an opt-out from the EU's charter of fundamental rights.

The Czech Republic is the only one of the 27 EU nations, which has not ratified the treaty -- which some critics say is a threat to the sovereignty of member-states', and will turn the bloc into "an empire the size of Europe."

"I am happy to say that the European Council, this evening, has been able to take a decision and agree on what has been asked for by the Czech government and the Czech president," said Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.

"We have moved the last political obstacle to ratification," said European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, after a summit working dinner.

Klaus angered his EU partners when he sought an opt-out from the treaty three weeks ago, after Prague's parliament had already ratified it, in what his critics took as a fresh attempt to delay its adoption.

The move was to ensure the treaty will not allow ethnic Germans forced out of the former Czechoslovakia after World War II, for Nazi collaboration, to reclaim their property.

The last technical obstacle remains a court appeal against the treaty by a group of Czech parliamentarians, many from the party Klaus founded. The Czech Constitutional Court is set to rule on it on November 3.

With the Czech problem out of the way, attention has also turned to candidates to become the first EU president, with former British premier Tony Blair a front-runner, along with Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.

EU sets $163bn for carbon cost
EUROPEAN leaders set a baseline goal for a world climate summit of E100 billion ($163bn) a year by 2020 to help developing countries fight global warming, a draft text revealed last night.

"The EU is ready to take its fair share of the global effort by setting an ambitious mitigation target, allowing for offsets and providing its fair share of public support," the draft said.

"The European Council endorses the (EU) commission estimate that the total net incremental costs of mitigation and adaptation in developing countries could amount to around E100bn annually by 2020."

With frustration mounting ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit on December 7, EU leaders had broken off their talks in Brussels earlier yesterday, unable to agree on how to share the cost of helping poorer states reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

But according to the draft, which could change, they agreed the baseline figure should "be met through a combination of (developing nations') own efforts, the international carbon market and international public finance".

The commission, the EU's executive arm, and Britain had previously recommended the E100bn figure but it was unclear whether the leaders would take such a stand.

The 27-nation bloc prides itself in leading the fight against climate change, and has already agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020, but many fear its leadership role could be compromised without a deal.

It is keen to enter talks in Copenhagen with a unified voice to encourage others, particularly the US and China, to commit to swingeing emissions cuts.

Now why would the Noobama administration be crowing about this penny-ante crap? Each and every name on this list basically had to be extracted if I read this right. It seems like a smoke screen. They have bigger stuff they could be disclosing for sure. Like what they talked about during lobbying sessions, the contents of the health bill, why they haven't bombed the government of Iran into nonexistance, their math on the benefits of the stimulus package, etc.. They're playing everyone for chumps and need to be spanked.

I don't care what they discuss during meetings. People say lots of things in meetings, most of which don't matter. I do want to know what was decided, what legislation is being proposed... that kind of thing. If someone mutters to the guy next to him that he'd hit that, I just don't need to know. Actually, I'm not sure why I should care who visited the White House, either. Are the phone logs going to be demanded next? Emails?
Visitor logs, phone logs and e-mail are all public records. If they're public then the public has the right to inspect them. 99% of them might be boring and tedious. I want to see the other 1%.
Transparency like you couldn't care less about you've never seen before

Today marks a major milestone in government transparency -- and an important lesson in the unintended consequences of such vigorous disclosure.

We previously announced that the White House in December of this year would -- for the first time in history -- begin posting all White House visitor records under the terms of our new voluntary disclosure policy. As part of that initiative, we also offered to look back at the records created before the announcement of the policy and answer specific requests for visitor records created earlier in the year.

So far we've processed 110 disclosure requests from September that yielded nearly 500 visitor records. All of these are now available on the White House website in accessible, searchable format for anyone to browse or download. Consistent with our earlier announcement that we will only release records 90 days or older, this first batch covers the period of time between January 20, 2009 to July 31, 2009. Future batches will be posted on an ongoing basis. (You can submit a request here.)

This first release is only the latest in a series of unprecedented steps by the President to increase openness in government. They include putting up more government information than ever before on data.gov and recovery.gov, reforming the government's FOIA processes, providing on-line access to White House staff financial reports and salaries, adopting a tough new state secrets policy, reversing an executive order that previously limited access to presidential records, and web-casting White House meetings and conferences. The release also compliments our new lobbying rules, which in addition to closing the revolving door for lobbyists who work in government have also emphasized expanding disclosure of lobbyist contacts with the government.
Oh no! There's going to be a big hit to the employment figures when all the lobbyists hit the streets if this is true!
There's an important lesson here as well. This unprecedented level of transparency can sometimes be confusing rather than providing clear information.

A lot of people visit the White House, up to 100,000 each month, with many of those folks coming to tour the buildings. Given this large amount of data, the records we are publishing today include a few "false positives" -- names that make you think of a well-known person, but are actually someone else. In September, requests were submitted for the names of some famous or controversial figures (for example Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, Robert Kelly ("R. Kelly"), and Malik Shabazz). The well-known individuals with those names never actually came to the White House. Nevertheless, we were asked for those names and so we have included records for those individuals who were here and share the same names.
I saw Billy Carter has come back from the grave for a visit. Somebody see if Elvis visited Obama to congratulate him.

#1  One reason to care about who visits the White House and what was discussed.
“As far as I can tell, THE Andrew Stern was the top outside visitor to the White House with approximately 20 visits, or about three visits per month, including four relatively small meetings with the president and a dozen with other White House staffers. Stern has openly bragged about the SEIU’s $61 million investment in Barack Obama. It certainly bought him a lot of access.”

#3  the WH says it was "a different Bill Ayers". This one didn't write Zero's autobiography

#4  WH says it's a 'different' William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright and Michael Jordan.

George Soros, however, is a convicted felon in France. Nice to see Barry hasn't improved his caliber of friends. But then, why would he? They got him where he is today.

#5  Unfortunately Wooz, convicted felons and pedifilic rapist fugitives from French courts find easy refuge here. We seem to embrace them.

#6  Besoeker, France also grants refuge to US pedophile/rapists - see Polanski, Roman. And murderers - see Einhorn, Ira.

Maids death: Murder charge
[Straits Times] A MALAYSIAN man faces the death sentence after being charged with the murder of his Indonesian maid who was severely beaten and locked in a toilet, officials said on Friday.

36-year-old Mautik Hani from Surabaya died from her injuries in hospital, a week after being rescued. Her employer, 35-year-old market vendor A. Murugan, his wife and mother were arrested but only Murugan was brought to court on Friday to face a murder charge.

'The investigation showed he had subjected her to a lot of abuse and there were many injuries on her body,' prosecutor Manoj Kurup told AFP, adding that Murugan faces death by hanging if convicted. 'We are not charging the wife and the mother,' he added, but declined to say why or give further details.

Ms Hani was discovered at her employers' home last week, found by another Indonesian cleaner hired to replace her who noticed a foul smell coming from a locked bathroom.

Police said when she was found, her arms and legs were bound and she had bruises all over her body. Among her injuries was a serious wound to her right leg through which the bone could be seen.

Local papers reported Ms Hani had been abused by her employers almost daily during the two months she worked at their home.
