Chinese price fixing plot hits the noodle bowl
Fans of China scandal stories are gonna slurp this one right up ...
Food is a sensitive issue in China nowadays. With prices up by double-digit percentages from a year ago for a range of everyday edibles from pork to eggs, the authorities are worried about the effects on social stability.

Now they may take action against an organization that stands accused of artificially raising the price of one of the basic staples of the working class: instant noodles. The Chinese chapter of the International Ramen Manufacturers' Association could be banned for allegedly manipulating the retail price of 95% of instant noodles on the market in the country.

Mainland media and bloggers have accused the association of organizing three rounds of discussions in the past few months among instant noodle manufacturers on retail prices.

Hao Jiguang, a lawyer from Hebei province, has appealed to the National Development and Reform Commission to investigate whether the Chinese branch of the instant noodle association has illegally fixed prices of the popular food. The lawyer has also appealed to the Ministry of Civil Affairs to ban the branch if it is recognized as an illegal civil organization, The Beijing News reported Wednesday.

Ghadafi's son: Bulgarian medics were tortured
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's son, who is touted as a reformer, has acknowledged that Bulgarian medical workers jailed for allegedly infecting children with HIV were tortured in captivity, an admission apparently aimed at showing a more open face to the West.
The release last month of the five nurses and a doctor after nearly nine years in prison boosted Libya's ties with Europe, a key goal of the elder Gadhafi.

But since their release, Dr. Ashraf al-Hazouz, a Palestinian who was granted Bulgarian citizenship, and some of the nurses have spoken frequently in the European media of the torture they underwent to force them to confess to infecting the children with the AIDS virus. They have since retracted the confessions and denied infecting the children.

With the admission, the Libyan leader's son, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, may have been trying to put the torture issue aside and burnish his own credentials as a candid promoter of change in the long-isolated nation.

They were tortured by electricity

and they were threatened that their family members would be targeted
"Yes, they (the medics) were tortured by electricity and they were threatened that their family members would be targeted," he said in an interview with the pan-Arab satellite station Al-Jazeera, excerpts of which were aired Wednesday.

The younger Gadhafi made no apology for the torture ...

Norway: 20% of convicted criminals do not show up to serve sentence
And there's no law in effect that compels sentenced criminals to report to prison, either.
20 percent of convicted criminals do not show up for their prison terms, according to the Norwegian Correctional Services. Prison authorities can do little but hope that the criminals will eventually come knocking on the prison door.

It almost sounds like something out of a film, but for the Norwegian Correctional Services (Kriminalomsorgen), the problem is real. 20 percent of convicted criminals simply fail to show up to serve their prison term, according to figures for 2007.

Criminals sentenced to long prison terms are particularly prone to bunking off.
No, reeeeeeaaallly?
Almost every fourth person sentenced to six months or more in prison failed to meet in 2006. The situation is only becoming graver, with a total a 1799 people failing to show up during the whole of last year, compared to as many as 1068 people so far this year. "It’s difficult to make plans for the prison terms when we have no idea who will show up and who won't," said Ellinor Houm, director of the Norwegian Correctional Services, section for eastern Norway.
I guess ...
With fewer criminals showing up here than in any other part of Norway, Houm's in charge of prisons with many empty beds. So far this year, every fourth criminal has not bothered to turn up at the prison gates in eastern Norway.

The dilemma facing the prison authorities is that failure to show up at prison is not yet illegal. Although Parliament has passed new legislation making it a criminal offence to skip prison, the law has not yet been implemented and until it is, prison authorities can do nothing but hope that the criminals will eventually show up at the prison gates. "Some people just don't get that it's better to get the sentence over and done with as soon as possible," said Houm.
And those hard boys in the Pak crime syndicates just laugh, and laugh, and laugh ...

Betcha not showing up for your imprisonment is one of the only ways to get your welfare cheques cancelled in Norway.

Fifth Column
US public sees news media as biased, inaccurate, uncaring: poll
More than half of Americans say US news organizations are politically biased, inaccurate, and don't care about the people they report on, a poll published Thursday showed. And poll respondents who use the Internet as their main source of news -- roughly one quarter of all Americans -- were even harsher with their criticism, the poll conducted by the Pew Research Center said.

Respondents who use the Internet as their main source of news -- roughly one quarter of all Americans -- were even harsher with their criticism
More than two-thirds of the Internet users said they felt that news organizations don't care about the people they report on; 59 percent said their reporting was inaccurate; and 64 percent they were politically biased.

53% of Internet users faulted the news organizations for "failing to stand up for America"
More than half -- 53 percent -- of Internet users also faulted the news organizations for "failing to stand up for America".

Among those who get their news from newspapers and television, criticism of the news organizations was up to 20 percentage points lower than among Internet news audiences, who tend to be younger and better educated than the public as a whole, according to Pew. The poll indicates an across the board fall in the public's opinion on the news media since 1985, when a similar survey was conducted by Times Mirror, Pew Research said.

#5  The Multi-conglomerate entertainment businesses are staffed by 90% registered Democrats. The same people who used the argument about other institutions were hopelessly bias and out of step with 'America' if they were composed of 90% "privileged" white males. If population numbers were legitimate basis for the finding of 'de facto' discrimination or segregation in other aspects of society, why can't they see the problem in the mirror? Because it was never about right, or fair, or justice. It was and remains all about power.

Like the ruling caste in Mexico, they'd rather see their institutions collapse rather than do honest reform. At least the Mexican ruling class can dump their problem on the US. What's the MSM going to do in ten, twenty years? Watch as they use their allies in one political party to destroy free speech and communication through regulation. There will be but one voice of Big Brother. Labeled with such titles as "Fairness Doctrine". It's coming.

If we stand by, it will. The very fact that the Amnesty bill went down in defeat shows that I don't think the American public will put up with it. '08 elections will really prove it, one way or another. If the dhimocrats win big, I believe the US is doomed to civil war and ruin. If true conservative republicans are elected, I have much hope for the future.

More than likely though, the dhimocrats will retain a house and the republicans will gain the white house and nothing much will get accomplished.

Israel and India to develop unmanned chopper?
Israel and India are considering the possibility of working together to develop an unmanned fighter helicopter, Israel Radio quoted Indian media as saying.

Former Navy Commander David Ben Ba'ashat visited New Delhi this week and discussed the initiative with his Indian counterparts.

Israel Radio added that military cooperation between Israel and India has grown recently with Jerusalem negotiating with New Delhi over the development of an air defense system requiring the investment of over USD 1.5 billion.

Areva, GE, Rosatom Vie for $14 Billion India Nuclear Reactor Contracts
Aug. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Areva SA, the world's largest maker of nuclear power stations, and General Electric Co. are among four companies poised to share $14 billion of orders from India as nations led by the U.S. prepare to lift a 33-year ban.

Toshiba Corp.'s Westinghouse Electric Co. and Russia's atomic energy agency Rosatom will probably also win contracts to each build two 1,000 megawatt reactors, said Nuclear Power Corp. of India Chairman S. K. Jain. India will be able to purchase equipment after an Aug. 3 accord with the U.S. is approved by the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group. ``These are the only four reactors in the world that meet our requirements,'' Jain said in an interview in Mumbai after the agreement was announced.

The orders will form the first phase of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's plan to build 40,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2020, equivalent to a third of current generation. India needs to add to the 3 percent of electricity that comes from Russian-designed reactors to meet soaring energy needs and reduce its reliance on coal-fired power plants.

``India will try to diversify its suppliers and it's highly likely all four will win the contracts,'' said Mikhail Stiskin, a nuclear industry analyst with Moscow-based brokerage Troika Dialog. ``The question is how much more will one or the other get, and Russia seems to be in a strong position.''

Nuclear energy projects in India and China to sustain economic growth that's more than five times the pace of the U.S. may lead to shortages of manpower and equipment and push up costs. Global capacity will rise to 519,000 megawatts by 2030 from 370,000 megawatts last year, according to International Energy Agency forecasts.

General Electric, based in Fairfield, Connecticut, Paris- based Areva, Westinghouse and Rosatom may each win contracts valued at $3.5 billion, part of a $40 billion reactor-building program, Jain said.

Nuclear Power Corp., India's monopoly atomic energy generator, plans to set up plants at four sites in the states of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal, he said. The company plans to build ``nuclear parks'' housing reactors capable of generating as much as 8,000 megawatts at a single location. ``To begin with, we will give out orders for two reactors of 1,000 megawatts at each of the locations,'' Jain said in an Aug. 3 interview. The four suppliers will not be permitted to own equity in the projects under Indian law, he said.

Nuclear Power Corp. plans to buy the AP1000 series of reactors from Monroeville, Pennsylvania-based Westinghouse, the `ABWR' series from General Electric, Areva's serial designs for the 1,000 megawatt reactors and the Russian VVR 1,000 reactors, he said.
And they'll go to school on each design.
The state-owned company will award contracts after India's civilian nuclear deal is cleared by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Suppliers Group, Jain said. The U.S. deal was held up by differences over whether India would get a perennial supply of nuclear fuel, be allowed to reprocess spent fuel and have the right to conduct nuclear tests.

India signed a similar civilian nuclear agreement with Russia in January. Russia is helping India build the two 1,000- megawatt light water reactors at the Kudankulam nuclear power station in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

International sanctions against India were prompted by the nation's testing of a nuclear weapon in 1974. The explosion conducted in a desert in western India prompted the formation of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. Another round of tests by India in 1998 led to the U.S. choking trade with India by blocking the Export-Import Bank and Overseas Private Investment Corp. from guarantee loans to projects in India.

The U.S. removed the economic sanctions in 2001 after the Sept. 11 attacks to bolster support for its campaign against terrorism. The U.S. decision to give India access to civilian nuclear technology was based on talks initiated during Prime Minister Singh's visit to Washington in July 2005 and concluded during President Bush's visit to India seven months later.

#2  As John mentioned, India is set to develop its own designs in the future by studying the four best reactor designs of four very large and powerful companies. Who wanted emergency and who did not?
A high-level meeting with President Pervez Musharraf in the chair on Tuesday night had decided to impose emergency in the country, but the president did not proclaim so, fearing a severe public reaction, reported Geo TV.

According to the channel, Pakistan Muslim League President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi and Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim pressed the president to impose emergency. Government's legal advisers Sharifudin Pirzada and Justice (r) Malik Qayyum seconded the proposal. "The Muttahida Qaumi Movement leaders, Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yousaf, PML Secretary General Syed Mushahid Hussain and the chief of an intelligence agency opposed the proposal to impose emergency," the channel quotes sources as saying.

'No emergency' in Pakistan
Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistani president, appears to have backed away from declaring a state of emergency after mixed reports that he would opt for authoritarian rule. Local television channels and newspapers reported on Thursday that the declaration was imminent but Pakistan's information minister denied that any such decision had been made. Mohammad Ali Durrani said: "In the president's view, there is no need at present to impose an emergency. The president was under pressure from different political parties to impose an emergency, but he believes in holding free and fair election and is not in favour of any step that hinders it."

Opposition parties say issuing an emergency decree would be drastic and retrogressive.

Lawyers assault Naeem Bukhari
Lawyers assaulted fellow lawyer and TV presenter Naeem Bukhari, who wrote a letter accusing Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry of misconduct before the latter's suspension in March, in the middle of Rawalpindi district court on Thursday. They pelted Bukhari and his two associates with rotten tomatoes and potatoes, and tore his clothes. Lawyers had banned Bukhari from the court premises, which he defied by appearing in the court of District and Sessions Judge Shaukat Mahmood. The police were summoned to his rescue. SSP (Operations) Yasin Farooq arrived at the scene with a contingent and was injured trying to rescue Bukhari, along with four lawyers. However, police managed to save Bukhari and took him to Islamabad in a car, but refused to divulge his whereabouts.

Science & Technology
Navy Tests Reactive Metal That Explodes on Impact
This Navy test of a prototype warhead showed that reactive materials — inert compounds that ignite on impact — can increase the radius and lethality of a missile.

When most bombs go off, they release a spray of deadly shards of steel. Now, imagine that those shards were themselves explosive, detonating in a massive chain reaction. It's for real: Defense contractors are harnessing the strange alchemy of reactive materials (RMs) — in which two or more inert materials are mixed to create an explosion — to develop smaller, more lethal warheads, as well as new ways to protect troops against mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades.

RMs generally consist of powdered metals, such as aluminum or titanium, combined with an oxidizing agent. Whether that agent is another powdered metal or a nonmetallic compound, such as Teflon, contact alone isn't enough to trigger an explosion. A powerful impact, however, will chemically mix the materials, igniting them and leading to a massive shock wave. "A big challenge is making [RMs] strong enough to survive launch, but fragile enough to react on impact," says Judah Goldwasser, program manager at the Office of Naval Research, which is developing RMs for potential use in antimissile systems. Instead of punching small holes in a target, Goldwasser says, RM shrapnel could cause an entire enemy missile to break up in midair.

Global warming hockey stick now broken
NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding. The warmest year on record is now 1934. 1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II. Anthony Watts has put the new data in chart form, along with a more detailed summary of the events.
The effect of the correction on global temperatures is minor (some 1-2% less warming than originally thought), but the effect on the US global warming propaganda machine could be huge.

Constantly being updated at link. The guy in charge of that department needs hung.

#1  The effect on the US global warming propaganda machine will be nothing, zip, zero.

That particular machine doesn't run on science or truth, it runs on money, fear, and hysteria.

I don't look to see this affect them in the least.
They will simply ignore this fact like so many others that don't fit their agenda.

But it's good to know we arent gonna die before the next presidential elections.

#2  Global warming hockey stick now broken

I was reading somewhere recently (Here's a related link) about the infamous hockey-stick graph: the data was cherry picked and manipulated, but it still didn't give the "correct" answer, so the source code of the model was "fixed" to make it fit. The resulting model will generate a hockey-stick graph for nearly any random data set.

#3  But that's all OK, because at least the scientist in charge wasn't a) wearing diapers, b) in some sort of fantasy love-triangle, or c) drunk on his ass when he manipulated the data (maybe on second thought, as a geek, data was ALL he could manipulate....)
