Suspect charged with capital murder in death of 6 children, 2 adults
[CHRON] The man accused in the murderous rampage that left six children and two adults dead inside a northwest Harris County home climbed through an open window, tied everyone up and shot each one in the head, according to prosecutors.

"He restrained, shot and killed eight people," Celeste Byrom, an assistant district attorney said during a brief court hearing in which David Ray Conley III, 49, who is charged with multiple counts of capital murder, was ordered held without bail.

Valerie Jackson, 40, had recently changed the locks, but Conley was still able to get inside the home as a window had been left unlocked, according to the prosecutor. He is charged in the murder of Jackson and her 50-year-old husband Dwayne Jackson, as well as their six children: Jonah, 6; Trinity, 7; Caleb, 9; Dwayne, Jr., 10; and Honesty, 11. Conley's son, Nathaniel, 13, was also killed, authorities said.

#10  Africa has countries that are coming out of the dark ages of socialism and cronyism, but a lot of other countries are circling the drain. You can have exponential population growth, but if resources cannot support those populations, you will peak and have a population crash. Who is going to take charge of Africa and change it? I do not see a bunch of nations jumping forward and volunteering. The Chinese look to their self interest. Buy natural resources, give away a few highways, dams, medical facilities to sweeten the deal. They will take what they can get for as cheap as they can. Africa will eventually have to clean up their act themselves.

In the meantime, Europe will face a huge wave of unemployed or refugee Africans heading across the Med. They are going to get flooded. The last year is just the warm up.

#11  This is serious stuff, people. Simple arithmetic tells us that 11 billion by 2100 means that by 4200 there will be 22 BILLION. With half in Africa, that's enough to make the entire continent tip over like Guam.

What's that? Something about not extrapolating exponential curves? Oh, just shut up!

Bullet-hit newborn still not out of danger
[Dhaka Tribune] Doctors at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday expressed their concern over the deteriorating condition of the baby hit by bullet in the womb of her mother,

They said the baby continued to lose weight but the premature baby is receiving the best treatment.

Her condition is stable except for weight loss. "But anything could happen anytime," said one of the doctors.

The jaundice level has gone down and the baby was responding to her mother positively. She was also breastfed at an interval of two hours.

Suraiya Begum, the bullet-ridden baby was taken to the DMCH after an emergency cesarean at Magura Genera Hospital on July 23.

Later, her mother Nazma Begum was also taken to the DMCH on July 30.

On July 31, Suraiya was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and her mother to Ward 212 on July 31.

Dr Kaniz Hasina, Paediatrics Department's associate professor who had been overseeing Suraiya's treatment since she arrived at the hospital, said: "Suraiya is losing weight everyday. Yesterday she was 1720gm but today 1620gm."
That's 3.8 pounds yesterday, 3.6 today.
According to the doctors, normal weight of a newborn is about 2500gm.
That's only about 5.5 pounds. That's the lower boundary of the "normal" range, between 5.5 and 10 pounds, average about 7.5 pounds.
She said: "We had injected blood into her body and increased frequency of breastfeeding."

The baby was injured when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during an attack by a Jubo League

The bullet went through the unborn baby's right shoulder and damaged her right eye. She was born after a three-hour-long operation at Magura General Hospital.

Fighting between Ukrainian military units and Russian backed rebel forces reached a crescendo Sunday when Ukrainian troops attempted to take a village in western Donetsk, according to Russian language news accounts.

According to several news accounts in both rebel and Ukrainian media, Ukrainian artillery units fired on the village of Novo Laspa Sunday, in an attack characterized by rebel media as "intense." Novo Laspa is in the Telmanovskiy district of southern Donetsk, about 40 kilometers south of Donetsk city.

Ukrainian media says that rebel troops attempted an attack on the positions of the Ukrainian 72nd Brigade, but were driven back in a counterattack.

Ukrainians say they took Novo Laspa, while rebel media says Novo Laspa remains in rebel hands.

According to Lt. Colonel Eduard Basurin, spokesman for the Donetsk ministry of defense, the Ukrainian attack consisted of light infantry and armored vehicles, but was driven back. Losses for the Ukrainians include two tanks, one BMP IFV, and an antitank technical vehicle.

The rebel report said that Ukrainian fired 160 rounds of 122mm rocket artillery on the village. A total of three unidentified civilians were killed in that attack.

Ukrainian journalist Andriy Tsaplienko said that the Ukrainians lost one dead, and other losses for the Ukrainian unit are not available. He indicated that rebel counterattacks continue at this hour. He also said that the rebels began firing artillery on the Ukrainian positions first.

According to data supplied by the Ukrainian news website rian.com.ua, a separate rebel infantry attack took place at Belo Kamenka at the same time as the Novo Laspa attack, which broke into Ukrainian defenses. The report said that the combat was hand to hand. Ukrainians lost seven dead and 11 wounded. Some of the casualties were from an unidentified Right Sector staffed military unit posted in or near the village as well as from elements of the Ukrainian 72nd Brigade. Belo Kamenka is in the same region as Novo Laspa.

Zakharchenko: we are ready for anything that might happen

With the collapse last week of talks in Minsk over removing more heavy weapons from the front line, Donetsk president Aleksandr Zakharchenko said Sunday that his forces are preparing for more war, according to Russian language news accounts.

In the media, Donetsk envoy Denis Pushilin accused the Ukrainian government all last week of sabotaging peace talks which were about the removal of more heavy weapons from the line of contact, even as rebels claimed to have removed weapons from all areas but where the heaviest fighting was taking place. Talks in Minsk are ongoing still, but meetings intended to address reducing the number of heavy weapons are not scheduled to take place until the last week of August.

Since last week, according to rebel media, Ukrainian artillery has been hitting areas such as western Donetsk city and Gorlovka, which is north of Donetsk city, with rebel artillery responding in kind. Now, it appears that renewed fighting has taken place in Shirokino, a town just east of the Sea of Azov city of Mariupol that rebel forces voluntarily left last month as a unilateral gesture towards demilitarizing the town.

In his remarks, Zakharchenko made references to the last two rebel victories over the Ukrainian Army when Ukrainian envoys rushed to an agreement even as rebel forces began their offensive operations. All this suggests that rebel forces may well decide to begin a new limited offensive operation as a means of not only gaining ground, but of forcing the Ukrainians back into talks.

Zakharchenko said the rebel forces have reserved the right to fire on Ukrainian forces because, his words, "Ukraine has violated the Minsk Agreement." The reference to return fire is to rebel contentions until last month that their forces did not respond to Ukrainian artillery fire.

Ukrainian media charged the rebel forces fired on their forces more than 70 times, including areas of western Donetsk city such as Opytnoye and Avdievka, which were hit by rebel 120mm mortar and 122mm artillery. Rebel artillery was fired on Ukrainian positions near Mariupol.

The Donetsk ministry of defense website said that Ukrainian forces fired on their forces 48 times since last Saturday.

On Saturday, rebel media said Ukrainian artillery fire hit rebel positions at the Donetsk airport and Spartak, and in the Petrovsky, Kuibyshevskiy and Kievskiy districts of western Donetsk city. Ukrainian artillery firing on those areas are said to have originated in Avdievka and Opytnoye. Gorlovka was struck by Ukrainian artillery fire as well.

On Sunday, rebel media claimed that Ukrainian forces fired on rebel forces 18 times. Artillery fire was directed onto rebel positions at Spartak and the Donetsk airport.

Gorlovka again was hit by artillery which originated from Dzherzinsk. Several utilities were hit as a result of Ukrainian artillery including electrical power and water. According to a separate official report, one unidentified civilian female in nearby Zaitsevo was killed in the artillery strikes. According to that report, most Ukrainian artillery fire takes place at night.

Fighting in Shirokino

According to a news account in korrespondent.net, which took data from the Facebook page of Igor Mosiychuk, rebel forces attacked Ukrainian naval infantry positions in Shirokino early Saturday morning.

Mosiychuk is a member of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada legislative body, and a member of the Ukrainian Radical Party.

According to the korrespondent.net article, rebel forces attacked using tanks, killing one Ukrainian marine and wounding three others. Reports in tsnesor.net said that the attacking forces were special forces armed with suppressed weapons, supported by mortar and sniper fire.

Mosiychuk said that while rebel tanks were involved, they did not fire on Ukrainian positions. A total of ten tanks were at the battlefront, a tank company. An artillery duel took place as well. Mosiychuk said that the rebel attack was forced back.

The use of suppressed weapons, according to Mosiychuk, suggests Russian Federation forces may have been involved in that attack, except that rebel recon groups, used to probe enemy defenses, routinely use suppressed weapons as a means of location of direct fire means. And timed artillery strikes are used by rebel forces as a means of covering the withdrawal of rebel reconnaissance missions.

Last week, Ukrainian commanders moved the fresh naval infantry unit into Shirokino after rejecting rebel calls for a joint patrol and a demilitarization on the town, now almost completely destroyed by artillery fire duels between the forces.

Rebel media have yet to address the rebel probe in the area.

Europe
Ukraine reports heavy tank battle with pro-Russians
[AfrikaTime] Ukraine on Monday said it had repelled a rare tank assault by pro-Russian rebels that threatened to erase a shacky ceasefire and dangerously escalate the 16-month war in its breakaway east.

President Petro Poroshenko said about "200 insurgents used tanks to storm" Novolaspa -- a village halfway between the separatists' de facto capital Donetsk and the Kiev-held port of Mariupol -- in a pre-dawn raid that caught government soldiers off guard.

Chief of Staff General Viktor Muzhenko "informed the president that the Ukrainian forces gave a fitting rebuff and repelled all the attacks," the presidency said.

But the defence ministry later reported the insurgents mounting a second attack on the same village whose outcome was not immediately clear.

"Ignoring the truce agreements, our enemies are continuing to stage provocations that are meant to escalate the conflict," the defence ministry said in a statement.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry called the clashes "a dangerous indication of a further escalation to come".

Girl, passer-by killed in crossfire between police and bandits
[DAWN] KARACHI: A minor girl and a passer-by man were killed when they were caught in crossfire between police and fleeing robbers in New Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
on Saturday evening, according to police officials. The girl's mother also suffered injuries.

Central SSP Muqaddas Haider said that three robbers were fleeing on a cycle of violence after having robbed the owner of a meat shop near Dua Chowk in sector-5, New Karachi, of cash and valuables when a patrolling police party caught up with them.

Police fired at the bandidos who fired back as they fled, leading to the death of a passer-by identified as Sadiq in crossfire, he said.

Police chased the robbers and got close to them when they were stuck in a traffic jam near Sindhi Hotel where another shootout took place and unfortunately, another passer-by, three-year-old Anushay, was killed while her mother, Ambreen, 25, suffered injuries, he said.

One of the robbers identified as Abid was enjugged
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
after he fell injured while his two accomplices managed to escape, he said.

The mother's condition is out of danger.

The officer said the maimed suspect told the police that he and his friends were released from prison on bail just a week ago.

Police found a pistol, a stolen cycle of violence and a cell phone in the possession of the injured robber.

The bodies and the maimed were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Islamabad bar to start verifying the degrees of lawyers
[DAWN] The regulatory authority for lawyers in the federal capital, the Islamabad Bar Council (IBC), has decided to start verifying the educational qualifications of the 3,700 lawyers in the capital.

These lawyers practice in the capital's sessions courts, special courts, tribunals and at Islamabad High Court (IHC).

3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Bar Council served as a regulatory authority for Islamabad-based lawyers. After the establishment of the IHC, in 2012, Islamabad Bar Association President Syed Javed Akbar initiated a process for verifying the degrees of lawyers but could not complete this task during his one-year term in office.

Mr Akbar told Dawn that it was an old demand by professional lawyers, that the degrees of those practicing in the field be verified.

"I thought the task of verifying educational credentials could be completed in three or four months. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
I started the process in September 2012 and by January 2013, I had only managed to collect 1,000 degrees from 3,700 lawyers," he said.

He claimed that there was pressure from certain groups who did not want him to open this 'Pandora's box'.

Child abuse scandal
[DAWN] AS national outrage grows and the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

government scrambles to try and limit the political damage from the serial child abuse in Kasur district, at the fore once again is the gross disparity between the powerful and the weak and the politicisation of law enforcement. The terrible events that occurred over -- and this is the truly horrifying aspect -- many years in rural Punjab were neither a secret nor hard to unearth. On July 8, this newspaper published a news report about the very shocking events in the area that had finally forced police to act after the villagers' complaints and anger proved too much to ignore. Headlined '15 booked for sex abuse, extortion', the report noted: "The gang, according to the FIRs, had recorded videos while sodomising young boys and raping girls and extorted millions of rupees as well as gold jewellery from villagers since 2009. Reportedly, the entire village was aware of the alleged offence but no one dared report it to police as the suspects were allegedly influential."

Yet, the police only appeared to have acted under pressure from outraged locals in multiple villages around Hussain Khanwala who decided to protest publicly. The July 8 report states, "On Saturday evening, hundreds of villagers from Rajiwala, Elowala, Bazeedpur, Kharapar, Choriwala, Nooriwala, Bhadian Usman, Ratnaiwala, Rangaywala, Bhagay, Jora, Nathaywala, and Mahalam gathered outside the Ganda Singh Police Station and demanded justice. They even threatened with torching the houses of the suspects." Then last Tuesday, protesters in Kasur clashed with the police -- leaving at least 15 protesters and coppers injured -- demanding that the police investigation into the child abuse allegations ordered after the July protest be completed quickly. The background is important because it puts into context the initial denials of the Punjab government and senior police officials over the weekend. Once the scandal became national news, Punjab officialdom's went into denial mode rather than be forthcoming about what was already known.

What should have happened? The horror in Kasur should have immediately led the Punjab government to revisit its entire law-enforcement strategy. A sadistic criminal gang preying on hundreds of young boys and girls operating a stone's throw from the seat of provincial power and able to intimidate entire communities into keeping quiet for years -- why is that even possible? Nationally, it should have immediately stirred the kind of soul searching and calls for reforms that are now being suggested by politicians seemingly willing to use the Kasur scandal to attack the PML-N or to improve their own standing with the public by coming down harshly on the perpetrators. The real test though is what will happen when inevitably the news cycle moves on to the next topic. Will any of the politicians so eager to be heard from at the moment really do any of the hard work necessary to get reforms through?
