Niger junta says France planning strikes to free Bazoum; ‘Nuh uh,’ sez France
[GoobjoogNews] The Niger military junta that seized power last week and ousted democratically elected president Mohammed Bazoum said on Monday the toppled government had authorised La Belle France to carry out strikes at the presidency to try to free Bazoum.

The military junta, which has confined Bazoum to the presidential palace since Wednesday, has previously warned against foreign attempts to extract him, saying it would result in bloodshed and chaos.

The military’s comments were made by army Colonel Amadou Abdramane, one of the coup plotters, on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
. He said that the authorisation was signed by Niger Foreign Affairs Minister Hassoumi Massoudou, acting as prime minister.

Massoudou could not be reached for comment. La Belle France has condemned the coup and urged that Bazoum be reinstated but has not announced any intention to intervene militarily. Gay Paree did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday.

The coup in Niger followed military takeovers in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
over the last two years, all of which have come amid a wave of anti-French sentiment.

La Belle France has had troops in the region for a decade helping to fight an Islamist insurgency, but some locals say they want the former colonial ruler to stop intervening in their affairs.

Niger has been a key ally in Western campaigns against gunnies linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
in the Sahel, and there are concerns the coup could open the door to greater Russian influence in the region, and also allow the insurgency to spread.

Supporters of the junta burned French flags and attacked the French embassy in Niger’s capital Niamey on Sunday, drawing tear gas from police. The junta accused La Belle France in another statement of shooting at protesters, injuring six.

French president Emmanuel Macron said any attacks on French interests in Niger would be met with a "swift and uncompromising response."

West African regional bloc ECOWAS has imposed sanctions and said it could authorize the use of force if Niger’s coup leaders fail to reinstate ousted president Bazoum within a week.

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby flew to Niger over the weekend to help mediate the crisis, and posted pictures on social media showing him meeting with Bazoum and separately with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani, whom the junta has declared head of state.

Deby said they had discussions to explore ways "to find a peaceful solution."

Deby seized power in 2021 after the death of his father Idriss Deby, the long-ruling former president, but he has remained a close ally of La Belle France.

#1  If France does come in, it will be with their elite forces and there won't be many of the Junta members left to tell the tail.

J&K High Court quashes govt order to seal two seminaries in Kishtwar

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
and Ladakh recently delivered a significant verdict by quashing an order issued by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Kishtwar to seal two seminaries (Madarasa).

The Court found that the sealing order was issued without a proper enquiry or sufficient evidence supporting the allegations made against them. The case titled "Raj Ali and others Vs Union of India and others" was presided over by Justice Sanjeev Kumar, reported Bar and Bench.

The court's decision came after it was brought to light that the decision to seal the two seminaries was taken without granting the management an opportunity to present their side of the case, thus violating the principles of natural justice.

The ADC's order had linked the sealed Madarsas to the Maulana Ali Miyan Educational Trust, Bathindi, which was previously deemed anti-national and anti-social by the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, on June 14, 2023.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
it was later clarified that the two seminaries in question had no connection to this particular Trust. The Court noted that the sealing order was passed without conducting a fair hearing or initiating any enquiry into the matter.

As a result, the Court opined that the ADC's application of the Divisional Commissioner's order to close down or take over these seminaries was not justified unless there was substantial proof of their association with the Maulana Ali Miyan Educational Trust.

Consequently, the Court quashed the sealing order pertaining to the two seminaries, emphasizing that the Divisional Commissioner's order from June 14, 2023, should solely apply to the seminaries operated by the Maulana Ali Miyan Educational Trust in Bathindi and should not be universally applied to all legitimate seminaries in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the Court clarified that if any seminary are found to be operating in violation of the law, authorities are free to take appropriate action after conducting a thorough inquiry or investigation. Nevertheless, the Court reiterated that no adverse orders against the interests of the petitioners should be passed without granting them proper notice and an adequate opportunity for a fair hearing.

Senior advocate Gagan Basotra, along with advocates Sahil Gupta and Nadeem Bhat, represented the individuals running the seminaries, while Senior Additional Advocate General Monika Kohli appeared on behalf of the Central government and other authorities involved in the case.

Pakistan confronts surge in suicide attacks
[Dawn] Pakistain is grappling with a distressing surge in suicide kabooms, witnessing a significant rise in fatalities and injuries compared to the previous year.

The country has already experienced 18 suicide attacks in the first seven months of 2023, resulting in the loss of more than 200 lives and leaving over 450 others injured.

This alarming figure has surpassed the total number of suicide attacks recorded in the entirety of 2022, which stood at 15. These are the findings of the report, compiled by a think tank the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), released on Monday.

According to the report, the most severely affected region has been the tribal districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province (erstwhile Fata), accounting for half of the total suicide attacks in 2023. The nine attacks in the area claimed around 60 lives, while over 150 others sustained injuries.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
the recent attack during a JUI-F gathering on July 30 was the deadliest in the tribal belt this year so far.

’Mainland’ KP faced its own share of devastation, with four suicide attacks causing the deaths of more than 110 people and leaving 245 injured. Among them, the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistain's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire...
Police Line attack stood out as the deadliest in the country, claiming the lives of over 100 individuals," the report mentioned.

FOUR SUICIDE ATTACKS IN BALOCHISTAN
Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
also experienced a troubling wave of violence, encountering at least four suicide attacks within the first seven months of 2023. Tragically, 14 people bit the dust, and 27 others were maimed in these attacks. Additionally, one reported suicide attack occurred in Sindh, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuring 18 others.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Bill to compensate terror victims, families with NIS 10 m. passes first reading in Knesset
Guess paying victims is more popular than ending terror attacks.
[Jpost] The bill would allow terror victims to claim at least NIS 10 million in compensation in addition to the ability to file legal claims against individuals and organizations who offer salaries to terrorists.

Supporters of the bill, led by United Torah Judaism MK Yitzhak Pindros, reasoned that this would effectively undermine both financial motivations to carry out acts of terror as well as the ability to finance those acts.

ADDING TO RECOMPENSE RECEIVED BY TERROR VICTIMS
The financial benefits to terror victims enshrined in the new piece of legislation would come in addition to, rather than instead of, existing compensations that are paid out by the state. The bill also creates a legal path for victims of terror to claim assets from terror financiers. This includes funds sent from Israel to the Palestinian Authority that have been frozen as a result of connection to terrorism.

"The new law is an important step toward achieving justice for victims of terrorism. [It] will enable victims to receive the compensation they rightfully deserve and will underscore the message that terrorism does not pay,” said Columbia University Law School researcher, Asher Stub and American businessman Sander Gerber in a joint statement. “By eliminating the barriers that currently exist in Israeli law, we can impose a heavy price on those responsible for perpetrating acts of terrorism, mirroring the strong stance taken by American law."

Stub and Gerber were among those to draft the bill and have seen previous success in passing the Taylor Force law as well as the law to withhold money from the salaries of terrorists.

Taylor Force was an American military veteran killed in Israel in 2016 by a Palestinian terrorist. Force’s death inspired the Taylor Force Act in the US. The act was designed to cut off US funds to the Palestinian Authority until a time when it would stop paying salaries to terrorists.

The Knesset Bill To Compensate Victims of Terrorism will next proceed to further readings before having a chance to pass into law.
