Afghanistan
Anti-Taliban forces finding their feet again

Resistance® to the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Islamist group’s interim government that seized power in August 2021 is growing both inside and outside Afghanistan.

The National Resistance® Front of Afghanistan (NRF) has resumed its fight against the Taliban, and influential leaders of various ethnic groups also have started assembling an anti-Taliban force. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
the United States and Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
are focusing their resources on the response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, so support from the international community has fallen short of what the anti-Taliban forces had been expecting.

According to multiple sources, the NRF declared it had resumed hostilities in the eastern province of Panjshir in early May. The NRF reportedly has attacked Taliban strongholds in that area. "The Taliban suffered many casualties, and the hospital was filled with injured Taliban fighters," a local resident told The Yomiuri Shimbun in a telephone interview.

Panjshir was the bastion of the Northern Alliance that fought against the former Taliban government that wielded power from 1996 to 2001. The NRF is currently headed by Ahmad Massoud, the son of former Northern Alliance leader and national hero Ahmad Shah Massoud.

The NRF has continued to fight against the Taliban since it seized power. The front paused hostilities over winter, regrouped and made preparations for the resumption of its combat operations. As domestic displeasure with the hardline rulers mounts, the NRF is calling for people across Afghanistan to rise up against the Taliban.

The uprising led by the "hero’s son" has been a major thorn in the Taliban’s side. On May 20, the Taliban mobilized several thousand fighters in Panjshir and launched a mop-up operation targeting the NRF. Reports that multiple local residents had been killed also flew back and forth.

‘ONE UMBRELLA’
Anti-Taliban movements also are afoot overseas. On May 17, Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
, an ethnic Uzbek leader and a former Afghan vice president in the previous administration that collapsed, opened the first meeting of the Supreme Council of National Resistance® in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
’s capital, Ankara. About 40 powerful leaders representing the Pashtun, Tajik and Hazara
...a grouping of Dari-speaking people of Sino-Tibetan descent inhabiting Afghanistan and Pakistain. They are predominantly Shia Moslems and not particularly warlike, which makes them favored targets...
ethnic groups attended what turned out to be the "largest anti-Taliban meeting" since the Afghan government was toppled. The council agreed to bring together their various forces under "one umbrella," and called on the Taliban to form an inclusive administration. The council indicated it would be willing to launch military operations if the Taliban refused this demand.

These anti-Taliban forces had been counting on assistance from the international community. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
this lifeline has largely failed to materialize because the United States and Europe are up to their necks dealing with the invasion of Ukraine and, as things stand, lack the wherewithal to seriously get involved in Afghan matters. There are serious concerns that anti-Taliban forces could end up isolated and fighting without support if the international community fails to come through with assistance.

TERROR ATTACKS
These forces are not the Taliban’s only headache. Militant organizations such as the krazed killer Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group have been launching terrorist attacks in Afghanistan. Islamic State has grabbed credit for three explosions that killed nine people in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Wednesday. The Taliban’s efforts to bring stability and security to the nation have failed to make progress, and this turmoil is increasingly affecting residents’ daily lives.

Since regaining power, the Taliban has ignored international criticism and become increasingly oppressive, such as by closing junior high and high schools for girls. Some observers are worried that the Taliban, if it fears that civilians are siding with the anti-Taliban forces, could accelerate moves to control freedom of speech and security across Afghanistan.

Questions Raised About Firing of 3 Female Professors
More females driven out of the public square into purdah.
[ToloNews] Three female Badakhshan University lecturers were fired. Officials at Badakhshan University said the three female lecturers have not been at their jobs in over 10 months and have therefore been fired.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
universities have only been opened since the beginning of the school year in March, and the upheaval caused by the political takeover in August caused interruptions in universities, schools and other organizations across the country before March.Based on a letter that went viral on social media, Badakhshan University's appointment committee decided to fire these academics in an official meeting.

One student said that the firing will add to the difficulties in educating women in Afghanistan.

"The removal of female professors from the university is one of the biggest problems in educating female students, and this adds up to the frustration of girls," said Lal Mah Hasrat, a student.

"It has been three months since our classes started. Mozhda and Professor Alamyar were among the teachers who were teaching us at university. It has been three months that they are absent," said Hangama, another student.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had been cornered by the banditti...
Badakhshan University's chancellor said that these professors have been fired for their persistent absenteeism.

"From August of 2021, which is ten months, these teachers left university, they were repeatedly contacted by the university leadership to come back, but unfortunately they did not return," said Salahuddin Qazizada, head of press relations of Badakhshan University.

Faeza Durkhani, a professor in the Faculty of Agriculture, and Monira Alamyar and Mozhda Tabesh in the Faculty of Social Sciences, are the lecturers who were fired by the leadership of Badakhshan University.

TOLOnews attempted to get a comment from the fired professors, but did not succeed.

Currently, nine other female professors are teaching at Badakhshan University.

Dawlat Waziri, Former Defense Ministry Spokesperson, Returns to Afghanistan
[KhaamaPress] Afghanistan National Television, one of the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
-controlled television channels, announced that former Defense Ministry front man General Dawlat Waziri has returned to Afghanistan.

The efforts of the Taliban’s Return and Communications with Former Afghan Officials and Political Figures Commission, according to National Television, have encouraged Dawlat Waziri to return to the country.

The Taliban’s Commission of Return and Communications with Former Afghan Officials and Political Figures front man, Ahmadullah Wasiq, confirmed Dawlat Waziri’s arrival and has expressed satisfaction and delight.

Dawlat Waziri is a former member of the former government’s security sector who was an outspoken opponent of the Taliban and is now glad to be back in Afghanistan, claiming the Taliban’s presence is encouraging and positive.

His sudden return to Afghanistan has sparked outrage on social media, with many users claiming that his return disrespects the sanctity of the blood of 61,000 Afghanistan National Army fighters killed in the 20-year battle against the Taliban.

Europe
Swedish Populists Call for Syrians, Somalis, and Afghans to Be Returned as Integration Fails
[Breitbart] The populist Sweden Democrats (SD) have called for the repatriation of Syrians, Afghans, and Somalis, noting their rate of unemployment and high numbers who have not integrated.

Party leader Jimmie Åkesson and migration policy spokesman Ludvig Aspling have said the Swedish government needs to do more to return migrants to their homelands if they rely on state benefits and do not integrate.

“Since 2010, Sweden has granted over 1.2 million residence permits, equivalent to more than a brand new Stockholm. Unemployment is almost five times higher among foreign-born compared to native-born,” the pair wrote in a debate article for the newspaper Aftonbladet.

The pair add that among Syrians, Afghans, and Somalis, half of the adults earn incomes less than 100,000 Swedish kronor (£8,189/$10,235) per year, and that among foreign-born residents in general some 600,000 are not self-sufficient.

“Remigration is not a miracle solution, but the failures of recent decades show that it must be an option – a solution for all those who live in long-term exclusion,” they said, noting that while Sweden does have a subsidy for those wishing to return to their home countries it is seldom used.

“Incentive structures and the welfare system must be reformed, so that people in exclusion cannot get caught up in welfare dependency, but are either forced into society or encouraged to remigrate,” they wrote.

Åkesson and Aspling also cited the Danish approach to repatriating migrants, quoting Danish government minister Mattias Tesfaye, who has previously stated his goal is that Denmark would receive zero asylum seekers.

The concept of remigration was also used by former French presidential candidate Eric Zemmour during his campaign earlier this year. The populist said that he wished to create a new government ministry specifically to deal with the issue.

Zemmour proposed to send at least a million migrants back to their countries over a period of five years. A poll released in late March revealed that around two-thirds of French people supported a mass remigration of illegals, foreigners on terrorist watchlists, and foreign criminals.

Mediterranean nations criticize EU solidarity on migrants
[AlAhram] Five European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
nations on the Mediterranean who fear possible waves of refugees driven by hunger out of Africa called Saturday for an end to the EU's ``voluntary'' solidarity on migrants colonists and a better way to redistribute the burden of caring for them.

The Interior ministers from Italia, Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Spain wrapped up two days of talks in Venice amid worries that the blockade of Ukraine grain exports due to Russia's invasion could see huge numbers of refugees from Africa flooding southern Europe.

Cypriot Interior Minister Nicos Nouris told news hounds that robust, common EU policy is needed on migration. ``Solidarity is not a slogan, nor can it be void of substance,'' Nouris said.

Past EU policies in which member countries could offer to receive some of the hundreds of thousands of migrants colonists landing in Italia, Greece and other southern shores proved grossly inadequate.

Many EU countries didn't step forward. Others, even with they did pledge to receive modest numbers of some of the hundreds of thousands of migrants colonists rescued from smugglers' unseaworthy boats, didn't follow through.

``Solidarity in our mind cannot be voluntary,'' Nouris said.

He noted that after several years of Cyprus taking in migrants colonists, now 5% of the eastern Mediterranean island nation's population consists of asylum-seekers.

The meeting did not address the millions of Ukrainian refugees who recently flooded into northern EU nations like Poland, Hungary and Romania.

How Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
handles large numbers of migrants colonists takes on particular urgency now, amid fears that drought in Africa and surging food prices even before the war made shipping Ukrainian grain to Somalia, Egypt and other poor nations impossible could drive up the already alarmingly numbers of hungry people.

In the Sahel, the part of Africa just below the Sahara desert, an estimated 18 million people are facing severe hunger as farmers endure their worst production season in more than a decade.

Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese cited the blocking of grain in Ukraine as just another reason for the EU to develop a ``adequate mechanism of distributing migrants colonists'' among its members.

She also pressed for more repatriation agreements with countries whose people are seeking a better life in Europe but had their asylum bids rejected since they are fleeing poverty, not war or persecution.

Italia has an effective repatriation agreement with Tunisia, but not with most other countries in Africa or in Asia whose citizens take to smugglers' boats to try to reach southern European shores. As a result, even though their asylum applications fail, many migrants colonists remain in Italia, often taking illegal jobs or resorting to begging.

Greece's interior minister expressed support for more legal paths for migration.

``We cannot let smugglers decide who comes to live in Europe,'' minister Notis Mitarachi told news hounds.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel said preparing to defend new Karish gas rig from Hezbollah attack
[IsraelTimes] According to Kan, Navy using vessels including submarines to protect drilling site; Iron Dome battery to be placed nearby as well

The Israeli military is preparing for the possibility that the Hezbollah terror group will attempt to attack the new Karish gas rig off the country’s Mediterranean coast, Kan news reported Sunday.

The report said navy vessels would help secure the rig, including submarines. A naval version of the Iron Dome missile defense system will also arrive in the area to help protect the platform.

The new drilling platform arrived at the Karish site on Sunday and is expected to become operational in the next few months.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
on Sunday warned Israel against drilling at Karish, claiming it was a disputed site.

The Walla news site quote an unnamed senior Israeli Sunday night who slammed the Lebanese allegations as "lies," adding that Beirut’s recent claims to the site "contradict the positions that Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...a formerly French, now an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. ...
itself presented in the past."

Longtime foes Israel and Lebanon have held talks over the past year aimed at demarcating offshore exclusive economic zones. The disputed area, hundreds of square miles wide, is thought to contain large deposits of natural gas, a potential game-changer for Lebanon, which is mired in a devastating economic crisis.

The Hezbollah terror group has warned Israel against unilaterally searching for natural gas in the disputed maritime region before any agreement is reached.

The negotiations are meant to focus on an 860-square-kilometer (330-square-mile) disputed sea area according to a map registered with the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
in 2011.

But in 2020, Lebanon demanded an additional area of 1,430 square kilometers further south, Lebanese energy expert Laury Haytayan said, characterizing the new phase of talks as a "war of the maps."

The additional area extends into part of the Karish gas field which Israel has assigned Energean, which was expected to begin pumping gas to the Israeli domestic market last year. Karish, Hebrew for shark, contains 1.4 trillion cubic feet of proved and probable gas.

Lebanon’s foreign minister responded positively in February to proposals from US negotiator Amos Hochstein on settling the maritime border dispute with Israel, as Hezbollah leader His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
reportedly gave a green light to continue negotiations.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
Nasrallah expressed fierce opposition to the US-mediated talks last month, appearing to contradict the earlier reports.

The area around Karish also includes a prospect known as Block 72, which is thought to also contain large hydrocarbon deposits. In June 2019, the Israeli government gave US-based Noble Energy the go-ahead to carry out exploratory drilling there, though development of the field has reportedly been hampered by worries over its fate in the dispute with Lebanon.
Courtesy of Skidmark, more from the Jerusalem Post at 5:10 a.m. ET:
Energean's floating gas production rig, Energean Power, has arrived in Israel, mooring near the Shark gas reservoir, about 80 km off the coast of Haifa.

Energean, which holds the gas production licenses from the "Shark(Karish)" and "Crocodile(Tanin)" reservoirs, announced the arrival on Saturday.

Energean will immediately begin anchoring and connecting the rig to the gas wells and piping networks and begin the initial run of various systems.

The company estimates that commissioning operations will last about 3-4 months until the first gas flow is achieved, which is expected in the third quarter of 2022.

Report claims Iranian scientist was deliberately poisoned, assassin has fled country
[IsraelTimes] Iranian opposition outlet says Ayoob Entezari, who worked on missiles and drones, died last week after attending a dinner party, the host of which has since fled

An Iranian scientist who died last week under mysterious circumstances was intentionally poisoned by an acquaintance, according to a report by an Iranian opposition outlet on Sunday.

Ayoob Entezari was reportedly employed at a research and development center in the city of Yazd, where he was said to have worked on developing missiles and drones before dying on May 31.

Some initial reports had indicated he died of food poisoning, but local authorities denied this, saying he died of an unspecified illness and accusing one of his relatives of spreading rumors.

Authorities in Yazd province also denied he was a significant figure, describing him as a regular employee at an industrial company, after a letter written by the governor called him a "martyr" and a picture reportedly showed local officials paying a condolence visit to his home. The province later said the use of the term was a mistake.

However,

Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
International quoted unverified reports saying Entezari may have been intentionally poisoned while attending a dinner, as he died afterward.

The outlet also said some unnamed sources reported that the man who hosted the dinner party has since fled the country.

Iranian scientist Dr. Ayub Ansari was invited to dinner with a relative in Yazd, Iran, shortly before his death, the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas revealed, sharing new details on Saturday regarding his death.

According to the report, when he got back from dinner, his condition deteriorated, and he was taken to the hospital.
Ansari was reportedly suffering from internal bleed and died two hours later despite attempts to save his life.

Lisa Smith made anti-extremism videos in Islamic State camp in Syria

Smith agreed to participate in the making of a counter-narrative video on condition it would not be broadcast until she and her then two-year old daughter returned to Ireland. Speckhard gave Smith’s daughter chocolate to occupy her while filming took place.

Smith’s interviews were later used to create four counter-Isis videos which have since been viewed thousands of times worldwide. In the videos Smith discussed how she became radicalised by joining private groups on Facebook before embarking on a life-changing journey that led her to Syria where she witnessed unspeakable violence.

Syria condemns Turkey’s ‘hostile’ action in north of country
[Rudaw] Syria on Saturday condemned The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
’s recent attacks in the north of the country, calling them a "violation of international law" and its illusory sovereignty, as Ankara continues its recently launched operations targeting Kurdish fighters.

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement saying they were following the "hostile" actions by Turkey, and its constant violations of Syrian illusory sovereignty "which has claimed the lives of a number of innocent people."

In late May, Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than there are in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really most important...
announced a new military offensive into northern Syria to create a 30 kilometer "safe zone" along its southern border. It is aimed to push back Kurdish fighters from the area.

"The hostile threats of the Ottoman Turkish regime constitute a blatant violation of international law and the illusory sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic," read the statement from the Syrian ministry, adding that the recent operation undermined the previously reached understandings about "de-escalation".

The statements coincided with ongoing Ottoman Turkish bombardment in parts of northern Syria. At least six soldiers of the Syrian army were maimed as a result of Ottoman Turkish shelling in Tel Tamer’s Umm al-Kif village on Saturday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Russia, the United States, and the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
have all expressed concern in regards to Turkey’s latest military operation, urging Ankara to maintain the current ceasefire lines.

Erdogan on Wednesday said Ankara was clearing Tal Rifaat and Manbij from "terrorists," a term it uses to refer to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and groups it alleges to be affiliated to them, as a part of its new military operation in northern Syria.

Dozens of shells targeted villages and district Manbij in an offensive that started on late Thursday evening and continued until the morning hours of Friday.

Turkey has launched two offensives against Kurdish fighters in Syria since 2018. It alleges that the fighters are allied with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an gang fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and is viewed as a terrorist organization by Ankara.

Miqati warns of 'very dangerous' situation after Israeli ship enters disputed area
Israel has a different view. See here.
[AnNahar] Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati on Sunday urged the U.N. and other international parties to compel Israel to stop its "dangerous provocations," after a gas drilling ship crossed the so-called Line 29 and entered a sea area disputed by Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. ...
"The Israeli enemy’s attempts to spark a new crisis -- by infringing on Lebanon’s maritime resources and imposing a de facto situation in a disputed area in which Lebanon is adhering to its rights -- is a very dangerous matter that can trigger tensions whose consequences cannot be speculated by anyone," Miqati warned in a statement.

"Based on this, we warn of the repercussions of any wrong step prior to the resumption of the mission of the U.S. mediator, whose recommencement has become more than urgent," the caretaker PM added.

"We also call on the U.N. and all those concerned to contain the situation and compel the Israeli enemy to stop its provocations," Miqati went on to say.

He also underscored that "the solution lies in resuming negotiations" in a manner that preserves "Lebanon’s full right to its resources and waters."
Another An Nahar article names her as the gas drilling ship Energean Power.
