The long-awaited dream: Egyptian army begins flooding Gaza tunnels
[IsraelTimes] al-Sissi
...former general under Mubarak, then Defense Minister. Egypt overthrew Mubarak and endured a year of ham-fisted Moslem BrĂĽderbund rule so al-Sissi could run for President-for-Life...
moves ahead with plan designed to thwart Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, weapons smuggling, terrorism

The Egyptian military on Friday morning began pumping sea water into the underground cross-border tunnels dug between its Sinai Peninsula and the Gazoo Strip in what appears to be a renewed campaign to stamp out terror activity along the border.

Paleostinian security officials told the German news agency DPA the operation was part of an effort to stop cross-border smuggling by Islamist Lions of Islam to and from the blockaded Paleostinian enclave.

According to the report, large pipes extending from the Mediterranean Sea flooded the Sinai-Gazoo border area with sea water, enabling Egyptian officials to destroy the tunnels without having to know their exact locations.

Officials announced last month that the area would be flooded and would eventually be converted into 18 fish farms along the 14-kilometer border with Gazoo, making the digging of new underground tunnels impossible.

Concrete made with salt water or beach sand basically corrodes and crumbles and as Frank pointed out, if you use rebar then THAT corrodes too.

#15  From The Nethack Encyclopedia:

Hobgoblin. Used by the Puritans and in later times for
wicked goblin spirits, as in Bunyan's "Hobgoblin nor foul
friend", but its more correct use is for the friendly spirits
of the brownie type. In "A midsummer night's dream" a
fairy says to Shakespeare's Puck:
Those that Hobgoblin call you, and sweet Puck,
You do their work, and they shall have good luck:
Are you not he?
and obviously Puck would not wish to be called a hobgoblin
if that was an ill-omened word.
Hobgoblins are on the whole, good-humoured and ready to be
helpful, but fond of practical joking, and like most of the
fairies rather nasty people to annoy. Boggarts hover on the
verge of hobgoblindom. Bogles are just over the edge.
One Hob mentioned by Henderson, was Hob Headless who haunted
the road between Hurworth and Neasham, but could not cross
the little river Kent, which flowed into the Tess. He was
exorcised and laid under a large stone by the roadside for
ninety-nine years and a day. If anyone was so unwary as to
sit on that stone, he would be unable to quit it for ever.
The ninety-nine years is nearly up, so trouble may soon be
heard of on the road between Hurworth and Neasham.

Saudi Arabia warns pilgrims against hajj unrest
[Dhaka Tribune] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
has warned Moslem pilgrims attending next week's hajj in Mecca to avoid exploiting Islam's annual gathering for political reasons, reflecting its worry that turmoil in the region may prompt attacks or damaging displays of discord.

"The security forces are ready to confront any irresponsible behaviour that might pollute the purity of hajj or endanger the lives of the guests of Allah," Interior Minister Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef was quoted as saying by state media.

Wearing the clothes and speaking the languages of dozens of nations, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flocked to Mecca's Grand Mosque for Friday prayers in a show of religious harmony in a year when the region's Moslem states are riven by conflict.

The turbulence and sectarian infighting between Sunni and Shia Moslems that has plagued Arab countries since the 2011 uprisings has grown even more acute this year, as Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and Libya joined Syria and Iraq in plunging into civil war.

Islamic party leader rejects Tajik claim he was behind deadly mutiny
[RFE/RL] The exiled head of a recently banned Islamic political party in Tajikistan has rejected accusations that he ordered a deadly mutiny last week by a deputy defense minister. Muhiddin Kabiri, leader of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT), said, "I absolutely deny all the accusations, as neither I nor our party have anything to do with those developments."

On September 17, the Tajik Prosecutor-General's Office said the deputy minister, Abduhalim Nazarzoda, who was killed in a special operation this week after authorities blamed him for attacks on a police station and weapons depot, was acting on orders from Kabiri and IRPT leadership. The prosecutors said the party's goal was to create a network of "20 criminal groups".

The September 4 attacks occurred against the background of a new official ban on activities by the IRPT, which is among Tajikistan's largest and was for years the only registered Islamic political party in any of Central Asia's five post-Soviet republics.

Kabiri said that Nazarzoda -- a former member of the United Tajik Opposition (UTO) that allied democratic, nationalist, and Islamist forces against government troops during the civil war in the 1990s -- had never been a party member and had nothing to do with the IRPT.

The Prosecutor-General's Office also named 13 IRPT leaders and members it said were suspected of supporting party leader Kabiri's plot, saying that they had been arrested "to prevent more terrorist attacks in the country."

Tajikistan's Justice Ministry last month banned the IRPT, claiming it lacked enough popular support to qualify as a registered party.

The Tajik government blamed Nazarzoda and his fighters for attacks against a police station and an arsenal near Dushanbe that left 26 people dead, including nine police and 17 militants. Officials say Nazarzoda was killed along with ten of his supporters during a battle against security forces in the Romit Gorge area east of Dushanbe on September 16.

IRPT leader Kabiri from his self-imposed exile reiterated pledges from party officials that the group would not go underground. But he warned that Tajikistan's radicalization is "inevitable" under such circumstances.

Europe
Germany starts training Peshmerga in WMD defense
Herzlichen Dank, Deutschland!
[Rudaw] MAINZ, Germany -- Germany has expanded its military training for Peshmerga forces to include instruction on defending against weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), following poison gas attacks on the Kurdistan Region's forces last month.

The German army, or Bundeswehr, released a statement Thursday confirming the expansion of the training to include tactics on protecting against WMDs and fighting with protective gear.

"From putting the masks on properly to caring for maimed comrades under WMD protection, they (Peshmerga soldiers) practice again and again what they have learned. Even targeting will be practiced, due to the restricted view with a mask on," the Bundeswehr said.

"The entire training team is satisfied," it added, quoting a German staff sergeant who said: "The (Peshmerga) group is very motivated and eager to learn. They reflect exactly what we tell them in training and make even more suggestions."

Following a suspected poison gas attack by the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) on Kurdish forces on the Makhmour front in August, samples were taken by German military experts, who early this month confirmed the use of mustard gas by the terrorists.

"We have knowledge of ISIS using mustard gas against Kurds in North Iraq," German Federal Intelligence Service chief Gerhard Schindler said at the time.

Since ISIS overran huge parts of Iraq and reportedly seized an old chemical weapons facility late last year, Kurdish officials had warned about possible chemical weapons attacks by the jihadists.

Erbil had requested allies for special protective equipment against possible poison gas attacks and training in anti-WMD warfare.

According to the German intelligence chief, the combat agent used by ISIS, which is prohibited by the international Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), originates either from old stocks of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein "or the Islamists have managed to produce the toxic gas themselves, after they took the University of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
with its chemistry laboratories."

Although Germany is not an active partner of the US-led coalition against ISIS, it is among countries arming the Kurdish forces directly, providing military supplies and training.

For a year now, about 90 German soldiers have been stationed in the Kurdistan Region to train Peshmerga forces in military tactics, especially in urban warfare. The Peshmerga forces are traditionally used to guerrilla warfare in the mountainous Kurdish regions of the Middle East.

The Grand Turk
Former President Gül regrets AKP MP's threats against journalists
[Hurriyet Daily News] Former Turkish President Abdullah Gul has expressed regret over threats by a deputy of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) against journalists, while also declaring attacks against daily Hurriyet as "saddening and wrong."

"I was very saddened and I couldn't countenance the involvement of a politician in something like this. It is something incredible," Gul said late Sept. 17 when asked to comment on threatening marks issued by AKP Istanbul deputy Abdurrahim Boynukalin earlier this week.

In the footage, Boynukalin can be heard threatening Hurriyet journalists and expressing his regret that they "had never beat them in the past."

"They had never had a beating before. Our mistake was that we never beat them in the past. If we had beaten them..." Boynukalin said in the video, mocking Hurriyet Editor-in-Chief Sedat Ergin and columnist Ahmet Hakan for their reactions as approximately 200 assailants smashed the newspaper building's front windows with stones and clubs. He also revealed in the video that he mulled waiting for Hakan in front of his house to confront him.

"These are saddening," said Gul, one of the founding members of the AKP, in an interview aired on private NTV news channel, referring to rising pressure on the press in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and in particular the vandal attacks against Hurriyet daily. "These are all wrong. Turkey shouldn't be experiencing and speaking of these. These would harm everybody. Such an image of Turkey shouldn't be displayed. One shouldn't let this happen. The freedom of press and expression is one of the most important issues," Gul said. "The press should be decent, too. Not everything is free. But the harming of freedom of expression and press has an impact on everything."

Controversial AKP members pushed out of MP candidate list
[Hurriyet Daily News] The Justice and Development Party (AKP) has surprised analysts by excluding a number of controversial figures from its candidate list for the Nov. 1 elections.

AKP politician Abrurrahim Boynukalin, who was filmed delivering a fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
speech in front of the daily Hurriyet headquarters in Istanbul amid a violent attack on Sept. 6, was not included in the party's candidate list for the Nov. 1 elections despite his recent rise in the party's bodies.

An initial attack and a second consecutive one less than 48 hours later triggered a public outcry and international reaction, as Hurriyet vowed to continue its independent editorial policy in spite of threats.

Boynukalin, who was seen in another video explicitly threatening Hurriyet journalists, was elected to the AKP's steering committee at the party's congress on Sept. 12. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, however, had said he did not approve of Boynukalin's remarks, as Hurriyet placed a legal complaint against Boynukalin.

MP Ugur Isilak, a singer-turned-politician who was filmed as he fell asleep in a parliamentary session, was also excluded from the AKP's list.

"I'm not going to the parliament to sleep," Isilak had told daily Turkiye before the June 7 general election, vowing to work tirelessly to improve legislation on culture and arts. His promise was broken in the third session of the new parliament.

Governors denied hundreds of anti-terrorism operations
[Hurriyet Daily News] The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) filed 290 requests for permits to conduct anti-terror operations in three Turkish provinces with the corresponding governor's offices in 2014, with only eight of them receiving a positive response, daily Hurriyet has reported.

In 2014 only, the TSK filed 110 requests for permits with the governor's office in the southeastern province of Sirnak to conduct anti-terror operations in the province, which has seen an upsurge in violence with a spate of terrorism acts over the past several months. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
it only received three permits to hold military operations.

The TSK filed nearly 100 requests for permits with the governor's office in the southeastern province of Hakkari to hold anti-terror operations in the city, though only three of them were responded to positively.

To conduct anti-terror operations in the eastern province of Tunceli, the TSK filed around 80 requests with the Tunceli Governor's Office, but only two of them received a positive response.

Operations conducted with permits the TSK received did not pose a major blow to terrorist organizations, military sources said, adding the administration could have found this convenient.

Killing in 'encounter' triggers protest in Karachi's Lyari
[DAWN] A suspected gangster was rubbed out in an encounter in the Kalakot area of Lyari, triggering protest by the area people who said the dear departed was not a criminal but a political worker.

Officials said contingents of the Rangers and police acting on information about the presence of 'gangsters' on Mewashah Road conducted a targeted operation near Ghafoor restaurant. In the ensuing encounter, one suspect, identified as Abdullah Baloch alias Cricketer, was killed while his accomplices managed to escape.

The law enforcers said he was an alleged gangster belonging to the Uzair Baloch gang.

However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
the area people including relatives of the suspects claimed that he was not a gangster and erupted into the streets against the killing.

A senior police officer who wished not to be named confirmed to Dawn that the protest took place after Asr in the area and a deputy superintendent of police held talks with them to disperse them peacefully. The officer said the dear departed had been associated with the Pakistain Peoples Party and had also contested local bodies polls in Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....

PAF Badaber camp attack was planned, controlled from Afghanistan: DG ISPR
[DAWN] Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major-General Asim Bajwa on Friday said that the attack on Pakistain Air Force (PAF) Badaber camp earlier in the day was planned and controlled from Afghanistan.

Take a look: Army captain among 29 killed in TTP-claimed attack on PAF camp in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
.

The DG ISPR held a presser following the attack on PAF Badaber camp earlier in the day and provided details of the attack and follow-up actions by security forces.

According to the details given by ISPR in its presser, the attack on the PAF installation started at around 5am, when the Death Eaters arrived on Inqalab road, and dismounted from their vehicle near the gates of the base.

"After dismounting, the Death Eaters used rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) and automatic rifle fire to breach the gates and gain entry into the PAF base," said Bajwa.

He elaborated by adding that as soon as the Death Eaters entered the facility, they met stiff resistance from the PAF guards who were stationed to guard the base.

"The Death Eaters then split in to two groups, with eight bandidos turbans heading towards the administrative area of the base while the other group headed towards the technical area," added the ISPR head.

Major-General Bajwa said that the Death Eaters were under continuous fire from security forces, and the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) reached within ten minutes and managed to contain the attackers in a relatively small area of the base.

The QRF was joined by Special Service Group (SSG) special forces, Light Commandos and regular army personnel. The outer cordon of the operational area was maintained by police forces.

"Once the Death Eaters entered the facility, they were contained within 50 metres of either side of the gate, and were not able to advance towards their objectives."

The head of the ISPR confirmed that the ensuing firefight took place within the small area which also housed the base's mosque, which "unfortunately became a target for the attackers, and they rushed in and opened fire on the people present for morning prayers."

The DG ISPR explained to the media personnel present that the ensuing attack on those present in the mosque and a barracks building next to the mosque caused the most casualties during the attack, as the attackers lobbed grenades and opened fire on the worshipers present.

"At least 29 people have been martyred -- 23 from air force, three from army and three civilians," AFP quoted Bajwa as saying. The ISPR spokesperson said that 29 people were also maimed during the attack

Maj Gen Bajwa also appreciated the media for its objective reporting and informing the people regarding the developments announced by the ISPR in a timely manner.

Cholera kills 4 women, infects 65 people in Abu Gharib, says Governor of Baghdad
[IraqiNews] The governor of Baghdad Ali al-Tamimi announced on Friday, that four women had died and 65 persons were infected by Cholera disease in the district of Abu Gharib
The water treatment plant is still not up to snuff, it seems. Filter contaminated water through sari silk if possible, then boil and/or treat with chlorine to kill the Vibrio cholerae bacterium, which spreads through diarrhea and vomiting to contaminate surfaces and water supplies.
The office of the governor said in a statement obtained by IraqiNews.com, "Tamini has arrived in Abu Gharib and held a meeting with the medical cadres and the officials in the district in order to follow up on the plan to face the Cholera disease," pointing out that, "Four women had died in the district, and 65 people were infected by the disease; 22 of them are at death's door."

Benjamin Netanyahu considers using live sniper fire against stone throwers
[Telegraph] Israeli leader asks attorney general whether it is legal to deploy the same means in East Jerusalem and Israel as the army uses in the West Bank.
The M2A1-7, using controlled bursts of 3-4 seconds in length should be a sufficient deterrent.
Israeli police could be allowed to open live sniper fire against stone-throwers after Benjamin Netanyahu requested advice on whether the move would be legal.
Of course it's legal. What's legal about throwing a rock?
Israel's prime minister said he planned to change the rules of engagement and declare "war against stone-throwers and firebomb throwers" following this week's death of an Israeli motorist, Alexander Levlovitch, who lost control of his car apparently after it was hit by a stone.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Putin's Syria play is a game-changer ‐ which means the West needs to rethink everything
The Russian deployment to Syria is game-changing.

It will alter the nature of international negotiations, compromise and weaken the cohesion and efforts of the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition, strengthen the Assad regime, and initiate direct Russo-Iranian military operations (suggesting the creation of a de facto Russo-Iranian military coalition, at least in Syria) for the first time.

The U.S. and its partners must fundamentally reassess their approach to the Syrian conflict in light of this critical inflection.

#9  The base at Tartus is what Vlad wishes to protect. From our friends at Wik:

Tartus is the Russian Navy's only Mediterranean repair and replenishment spot, sparing Russia’s warships the trip back to their Black Sea bases through the Turkish Straits.[3]

Tartus hosts a Soviet-era naval supply and maintenance facility, under a 1971 agreement with Ba'athist Syria, which was—until the second year of the Syrian Civil War—staffed by Russian naval personnel. Most recently, the facility hosts the Amur class floating workshop PM-138, capable of providing technical maintenance to Russian warships deployed in the Mediterranean
.

The Tartus facility can accommodate four medium-sized vessels only if both of its 100 meter long floating piers located on the inside of the northern breakwater were operational. It is not capable of hosting any of the Russian Navy's current major warships which range in length from the 129 meter Neustrashimyy frigate through the 163 meter Udaloy destroyer, and much less cruisers such as the 186.4 meter Slava class, the 252 meter Kirov class, and the 305 meter Kuznetsov class.

Alawite neighborhoods of Homs concerned over displaced return: activists
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Main Alawite neighborhoods of central city of Homs condemned governor's decision allowing displaced people of Sunni neighborhoods to come back home, saying the 'laggard' governor is letting hard boyz enter Homs again.

Abu Jawad al-Faouri, local activist, quotes eyewitnesses as saying Shabiha checkpoints, pro-Bashir al-Assad militiamen, have been eliminated from Bab Sbaa neighborhood and were replaced by military intelligence checkpoints to avoid any sectarian breaches.

Homs governorate intended to rehabilitate the deserted neighborhood of Bab Sbaa, a move raised concerns and fears of the Alawite minority.

Pro-regime social media pages said the decision of Homs governor Talal Barazi to allow displacement return back is dangerous.

On May 2014, rebels withdrew from the Old City of Homs after a deal brokered by UN allowed rebels to move to the northern countryside of the city after two years of siege. Since then thousands of families who fled the fight still displaced.

Last Wednesday, 8 people were maimed when a boom-mobile went off in al-Zahara, the mainly Alawites neighborhood in Homs. An attack came almost three weeks since a blast hit al-Zahra, killing 4 and wounding 19.

Ahrar al-Sham's new chief vows to defeat Russia
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The newly-appointed leader of the powerful Islamist Ahrar al-Sham
...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
rebel group has vowed to defeat any planned Russian intervention in Syria during his inaugural public address.

"We owe it to you to restore freedom to Syria after the invasion of the rejectionists [Shiites] from all corners of the earth," Abu Yahya al-Hamwi said in a speech released Thursday.

"Today they are bolstered by their allies the Russians and the fate of this invasion shall be defeat," he added in reference to Moscow's major military buildup in Syria.

Hamwi's bombastic statement comes less than a week after his selection as Ahrar al-Sham's new commander in a surprise move that saw the outgoing leader Sheikh Hashim al-Sheikh step down voluntary, the first such power transfer among Syrian rebel groups.

Only one year ago most of Ahar al-Sham's leadership was killed in a devastating attack in Idlib, however the Islamist fighting force regrouped--reportedly with Turkish backing--and played a lead role in the Army of Conquest coalition's stunning takeover of the Idlib province in June.

The Army of Conquest has since advanced against government troops in the Al-Ghab Plain that straddles the mountains along the Bashir al-Assad regime's coastal heartland, raising worries in the erstwhile secure region.

Russia, in turn, has bolstered its military presence in the Alawite-populated region amid a flurry of recent reports indicate the country is preparing operations on behalf of the Assad regime.

On Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said Damascus would request Russian military assistance if it was necessary. The same day reports emerged that Washington was preparing to accept Russia's offer to discuss its activities in Syria.

AFP last Wednesday reported that Russia's build-up has centered on the Bassel al-Assad International Airport south of the coastal city of Latakia.

Kremlin says open to any Syrian request to send troops
[Hurriyet Daily News] Moscow said on Sept.18 it would consider any request from Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Light of the Alawites...
to send troops, as Washington frets over an alleged Russian military buildup in the war-torn country.

"If there is any request then it would naturally be discussed and evaluated through bilateral contacts and dialogue," Kremlin front man Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

"But it is difficult to talk about this hypothetically."

The United States says that Russia -- one of Assad's last remaining allies -- has covertly deployed troops, artillery units and tanks to Syria.

Moscow says it is sending arms to Syria under existing contracts but denies bolstering its forces in the country.

Putin has provided vital support to Assad throughout a popular uprising against his regime and as the conflict has metastasised into a brutal civil war that has killed 240,000 people and displaced four million.

US officials have expressed fears Russia may strike Western-backed rebel groups battling Assad and ultimately risk a confrontation with forces fighting the Islamic State

of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Moscow has been pushing for a broader coalition of forces to take on ISIL, but key Western and regional players have ruled out fighting alongside Assad.

U.S. and Russian military leaders discussing Syria
[NYT] WASHINGTON -- American and Russian military chiefs began talks Friday over Moscow's buildup in Syria, signaling the U.S. is resigned to Russia's emerging plans but anxious to avoid dangerous misunderstandings on the battlefield.

A 50-minute phone call between U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Russia Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu marked the first military-to-military conversation between the two countries in more than a year. And it came as Russia continued to send aircraft, troops and military equipment into Syria and the U.S.-led coalition kept up its assault against Islamic State militants.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov broached the idea of direct talks earlier this week in a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and Shoigu initiated the call to Carter on Friday.

U.S. Train-and-Equip Program, by the Numbers: 9 Fighting, 18 MIA, 1 Killed
[DefenseOne] Pentagon updates the tally just days after CENTCOM shocked senators by reporting that only '4 or 5' Syrians remained in the fight.

This is the U.S. proxy force in Syria, by the numbers: Of the first class of 54 to graduate the U.S. train-and-equip program, exactly nine are currently fighting in Syria, while 11 more members of the New Syrian Force -- the Pentagon's name for the group it hoped would become an effective anti-ISIS unit -- are waiting outside the border to join the fight.

Fourteen have left the NSF to join some other moderate opposition group, while 18 more are somewhere in Syria, but missing. One has been reported killed, and one has been confirmed as kidnapped by Al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda affiliate.

On the bright side, all of their sophisticated equipment is accounted for and being held by another moderate opposition group, according to Col. Pat Ryder, spokesman for U.S. Central Command.

U.S. tried to send weapons to Syrian rebels through companies in Belarus and Bulgaria
[Bus Insider] Washington authorized a small Delaware-based arms contractor to purchase weapons from "Europe's last dictatorship" to arm US-trained rebels in the fight against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and it ended in disaster.
'Ended in disaster' as planned. Lot of that going around lately. Sorry, no refunds available.
An investigation by Buzzfeed's Aram Roston reveals that Purple Shovel LLC -- founded in 2010 by former counterintelligence officer Benjamin Worrell -- was payed $50 million by the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in December to provide the US-trained New Syrian Force with foreign weapons and ammunition.
Counterintelligence (CI) Agent gone 'heavy lift' carrier eh? Sort of at the lower end of the intelligence food chain, compensation, benefits, advancement, etc. I'll bet the mortgage or lease on that first plane, crews, licensing, insurance, spares, etc. was a real bitch. Oh by the way, so where did the money really go ?
These weapons included 700 Russian-designed Konkurs missiles, which are only readily available in Belarus -- a country ruled by dictator Alexander Lukashenko with multiple human rights violations that is generally off limits to arms dealers.

"Belarus is on a special 'International Traffic in Arms Regulations' list published by the U.S. State Department, of countries with bans or special restrictions," Roston writes.
On the "banned list." Smart business decision, keeps the competition focused elsewhere. Purple Shovel, sounds lucrative? Statement of Past Performance? If I wanted to invest, whom do I call? Oh, email only, you don't take calls.

Terror Networks
400 Turks killed in ranks of jihadists in Syria, Iraq, Turkish official says
[Hurriyet Daily News] Some 400 Turks who joined the ranks of jihadist fighting in Syria and Iraq have been killed so far, as 900 more were still with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a foreign ministry official told Hurriyet Daily News during a meeting on Sept. 17.

In addition to the 900, some 200 to 300 joined al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
, a jihadist group in Syria linked to al-Qaeda.

"Currently, we believe that there are about 900 in ISIL, and close to 300 hundred with al-Nusra," the official said, while responding to a question on the number of Turks among imported muscle in neighboring Syria and Iraq.

"We suspect there might be more people going and coming back. We do not know if any of them are opportunistic money-mongers, fixers, holy warriors or how many of them are there for curiosity. But our tendency is not to believe them when they say they were just a cook there," the official said, adding the ministry is demanding more international coordination in its efforts to block the movement of imported muscle.

Commenting on recently escalating attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the official said more than half of the 120 fallen coppers and soldiers were killed in Body-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (BBIED) and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks rather than direct festivities.

Many of the 16 soldiers killed the in the roadside kaboom in southeastern Hakkari's Daglica on Sept. 6 were not a part of the personnel involved in the direct fight but responsible for detecting road bombs.

"There have been only one or two festivities in the sense of a 'real' clash," the official said, adding the PKK has chosen instead to attack with bombs.

"This is going to be a long effort," the official said, on the efforts to cut the PKK's resources.

The official also said the act of going to a place and receiving terrorism training should be criminalized, as many young people who receive training usually return after three months with knowledge which makes them a risk to society.

ISIS's Global Strategy: September 2015
[UnderstandingWar] ISIS is executing a global strategy to defend and expand its territory within Iraq and Syria; to foster affiliates and exacerbate disorder in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia; and to inspire and resource polarizing terror attacks in the wider world. The map depicts the geographic areas of those parallel campaigns, labeled the Interior, Near Abroad, and Far Abroad rings, respectively. The map also marks the areas where ISIS has declared one or more "wilayats," or governorates in the Near Abroad. ISIS maintains active affiliates in each of its governorates, which provide the organization with strategic resiliency outside of Iraq and Syria.
