Egypt to remove border city Rafah for buffer zone
h/tGates of Vienna
The Egyptian authorities have decided to remove the city of Rafah on the borders with the Gaza Strip completely, says the governor of North Sinai district Abd al-Fattah Harhour.

In a news conference Wednesday, Harhour said it would be necessary to remove Rafah city completely in order to create a buffer zone on the borders with the Gaza Strip.

"A new Rafah city is being established with residential zones appropriate to the nature and traditions of the residents of Rafah.

Stage 2: Egypt doubling Gaza buffer, demolishing 1,220 more homes
As promised, to 1 km. Stage 3, to 2 km to follow. The Egyptians are being efficient.
[Ynet] Egyptian military officials say the army has begun doubling the size of a buffer zone along the Gaza border, an operation that will involve the destruction of 1,220 homes and the eviction of residents.

The operation will expand the existing 500m buffer zone created last November to a full kilometer (0.6 mile), a move meant to halt the passage of weapons and militants. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to journalists, expect to complete the expansion by the middle of next week.

The forced evictions are displacing a population with longstanding grievances against the government of Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. The northern Sinai Peninsula has become a hub for Islamic extremists, and security forces in the area face regular deadly attacks.

From Egypt's leader, an ambitious call for reform in Islam
Ay Pee notices, and now so will the mainstream media. But to be fair, they add depth and detail to the original brief reports we saw here earlier.
[Ynet] Fattah al-Sisi's makes boldest effort yet to position himself as a modernizer of Islam and states professed goal to purge Islam of murderous Moslem ideas of intolerance and violence that fuel groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State

Egypt's president opened the new year with a dramatic call for a "revolution" in Islam to reform interpretations of the faith entrenched for hundreds of years, which he said have made the Moslem world a source of "destruction" and pitted it against the rest of the world.

The speech was Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's boldest effort yet to position himself as a modernizer of Islam. His professed goal is to purge the religion of murderous Moslem ideas of intolerance and violence that fuel groups like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State - and lie behind Tuesday's attack in Gay Paree on a French satirical newspaper that killed 12 people.

Arar bombing: Terror sites publish photos of 2 'Saudi attackers'
[ARABNEWS] Social media sites supporting the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terror group on Wednesday released photos of the two Saudis who allegedly took part in Tuesdays suicide operation in Arar.

The photos were published after a newspaper report said two Saudis, wanted by police, were behind the predawn attack. DNA tests are being conducted on bodies to confirm the attackers' identities, said the report carried by Asharq Al-Awsat. Saudi authorities have identified the two Saudi attackers from their facial features that had not changed as a result of the shootout, the paper said.

Authorities are still trying to determine the identity of two others as the body of one was totally disfigured as a result of suicide kaboom while the other had used a hand grenade to kill himself when he was surrounded.

Security sources said the four murderous Moslems were carrying Saudi riyals, weapons and bombs.

They were planning to take control of a checkpost on the Saudi-Iraq border but modern technology helped the border guards to foil their plot, one source said.

Haia officials accused of assaulting man
[ARABNEWS] A Saudi man has accused members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) of beating him up, resulting in a broken nose and jaw, and several bruises to his face.

Haia Chairman Abdullatif Al-Asheikh has reportedly launched an investigation into the incident. Pictures of the bloodied and battered man in hospital have been posted on social networking sites.

The victims brother was quoted as saying in a local publication that Haia members had stopped him at Othaim Mall in Naseem District in the eastern part of Riyadh.

Haia chief decries Arar attack
[ARABNEWS] The suicide kaboomers who killed three Saudi soldiers this week have committed a "heinous crime" for which they would be punished in the Hereafter, said Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Asheikh, chief of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (Haia).

"The killing of our officials is a heinous crime against the security and stability of the Kingdom and its people," he said recently.

Al-Asheikh said the Koran makes it clear in several verses that those who kill believers intentionally would have to face the wrath of God, including punishment of an abode in Hell.

Britain
Anjem Choudary Defends Paris Terrorist Attack
In the wake of the terrorist attack on the offices of French satirist paper Charlie Hebdo, one Muslim cleric justified the murders under Islamic law.
And which cleric might that be?
USA today published a column by avowed “radical Muslim cleric” Anjem Choudary. The piece titled “People know the consequences” asks why France would allow the paper to mock Islam, and further excused the systematic murders as justified under Islamic law:
Why does England allow this so-called person to spew his vitriol every time guys with turbans and automatic weapons kill a few unarmed people?
“Muslims consider the honor of the Prophet Muhammad to be dearer to them than that of their parents or even themselves.
That means absolute squat to the civilized world.
To defend it is considered to be an obligation upon them. The strict punishment if found guilty of this crime under sharia (Islamic law) is capital punishment implementable by an Islamic State.
The strict punishment for murder in the civilized world used to be the death penalty, occasionally imposed in various artful ways. The guillotine was said to be the quickest, most effective, and probably the most merciful. If it was good enough for Charlotte Corday it should be good enough for Anjem Choudary, so I think the Queen should buy one.
This is because the Messenger Muhammad said, "Whoever insults a Prophet kill him."
The Messenger Moe may have had a dog in the fight. Since he was a "prophet" that mean no one should insult him. But I'm something of a prophet myself, so if anybody insults me just go right ahead and kill him.
“However, because the honor of the Prophet is something which all Muslims want to defend, many will take the law into their own hands, as we often see.”
But we live in relatively civilized times, so keep in mind that we're not allowed to just murder each other at random. If you have a nice, satisfying duel before breakfast one morning and your opponent doesn't survive the experience they're gonna haul you off to jug, even if he did point out that yer mudder wears army boots.
The contention that mass murder is in any way an appropriate response to being personally offended is a dangerous slope on which to tread.
There are a billion and a half Moslems at the foot of that slope.
There is no doubt that some of these cartoons can be seen as offensive to certain people, but that same sentiment can be asserted on nearly any form of speech, especially in politics. Hence, the reasoning behind and the sanctity of the Constitution’s first amendment.
When people rediscover Sobieski the Euromoslem population will either become wine connoisseurs and sausage makers and extol the beauty of their women, or they can skulk back to the Islamic paradises from whence they came, only this time they can live in UN-sponsored self-governing Ein el-hellholes. That's if they're lucky. If they rediscover Ferdinand of Aragon and Torquemada all bets are off.
Choudary then reversed the blame for the attack away from the three terrorists themselves and onto the French government:
Oh, well. How could it be the fault of Moslems? They have a dispensation from civilized behavior.
“So why in this case did the French government allow the magazine Charlie Hebdo to continue to provoke Muslims, thereby placing the sanctity of its citizens at risk?”
Maybe because Charlie has the right to print anything he damned well pleases and Moslems don't have an inborn right to murder anyone.
This kind of blame shifting is also intellectually perilous. Placing the onus of speech on the any secular government is asking for abuse. But, if Choudary had his way, the government of the Islamic State would tightly control speech and punish transgressions with death.
Under the right of reciprocity, the civilized world will have a perfect right to punish Moslem transgressions with death. The difference is that we, as a society, hate to do it.
Choudary’s entire argument excusing the Paris attack reveals the fundamental disconnect between views of civilizations.
Well, he is a loon, isn't he?
Radical Islamists have no intention of assimilating into their respective cultures or contributing to any kind of meaningful dialogue about religion and free speech. They are intent on terrorizing western citizens out of exerting their rights. Their plan of terrorism and intimidation, with the ultimate goal of imposing their religion on others is fundamentally anti-American and is not meant for the 21st century.
Make that "anti-Civilization." The sooner we realize it the better.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea’s SINPO-class Sub: New Evidence of Possible Vertical Missile Tubes
Recent commercial satellite imagery indicates that the conning tower of a new North Korean submarine first seen in July 2014 houses 1-2 possible vertical launch tubes for either ballistic or cruise missiles. The boat could serve as an experimental test bed for land-attack missile technology, which if successful, may be integrated into a new class of submarines. In addition, imagery over the past six months indicates that North Korea has been upgrading facilities at the Sinpo South Shipyard in preparation for a significant naval construction program, possibly related to submarine development.

North Korea’s development of a submarine-launched missile capability would eventually expand Pyongyang’s threat to South Korea, Japan and US bases in East Asia, also complicating regional missile defense planning, deployment and operations. Submarines carrying land-attack missiles would be challenging to locate and track, would be mobile assets able to attack from any direction, and could operate at significant distances from the Korean peninsula.

Nevertheless, such a threat is not present today. Moreover, an effort by Pyongyang to develop an operational missile-carrying submarine would be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor with no guarantee of success. Moreover, North Korea’s development of an operational missile-carrying submarine would be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor with no guarantee of success.[3] Building a naval ballistic missile (or even a modified naval version of a surface-to-surface missile) would present new and unique engineering challenges. North Korean missile designers and naval architects have no technical experience with the requirements for installing and launching such a weapon from a submarine.

#2  On the conning tower?

What about SAMs? Biggest danger to a sub is airborne ASAW; ISTR there's been speculation of putting SAMs on subs as a counter. Especially since the Norks would be operating in shallower waters.

Plus, hey, deniable terror weapon.
Posted by: Rob Crawford || 01/09/2015 9:10 Comments || Top||

#3  The SAM is usually mounted on one of the extendable masts, well according to Harpoon anyway. :) There was a plan to mount a Stinger to the periscope of the Advanced 688 class, but I don't think anything came of it, or maybe it did, who knows?

#4  On the conning tower?

It's possible that the NorKs are using the sail (correct term for 'conning tower') as a test platform, because it doesn't involve making modifications to the hull itself - something that the NorKs may not have the capability to do.

The NorKs subs have been derivations of Yugoslavian designs, but I suspect that most the newest one is likely an Iranian redesign. It's also possible that this work is part of a project for evaluating quick-modification of existing submarines with missile capability, perhaps on behalf of the Iranians.

Paris attack said possibly tied to Islamic State via Tunisia killer
[IsraelTimes]. One of the Charlie Hebdo suspects worked with IS member Boubaker al-Hakim to send fighters to join Al-Qaeda in Iraq

A French-Tunisian jihadist who assassinated two Tunisian politicians in 2013 provides a possible link between Charlie Hebdo suspect Cherif Kouachi and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group based in Iraq and Syria, a researcher told AFP on Thursday.

Boubaker al-Hakim is a member of the krazed killer Islamic State (IS) group, which last month grabbed credit for assassinating two secular politicians, Chokri Belaid and Mohammed Brahmi, in Tunisia in 2013.

He was previously part of the Butte-Chaumont network in Gay Paree alongside Kouachi that helped send fighters to join Al Qaeda in Iraq in the mid-2000s.

Kouachi is wanted along with his brother Said for the deadly attack on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday that left 12 people dead.

Hakim represents the link between the Kouachi brothers and (IS), said researcher Jean-Pierre Filiu, a leading expert on radical Islam at Gay Parees Sciences Po university.

It is impossible that an operation on the scale of the one that led to the massacre at Charlie Hebdo was not sponsored by Daesh, he claimed, using an alternative name for IS.

No group has yet grabbed credit for the Charlie Hebdo attack, but it is certain that (IS) is closely following it and waiting to see how it ends, said Filiu.

I am sure that the video claiming responsibility is already prepared.

He added that Hakim is not a very senior figure in IS, but gained respect within the movement after killing Belaid and Brahmi.

Hakim grabbed credit for the murders in a video released last month that was filmed in IS territory somewhere in Iraq or Syria.

Born in 1983, he is only around a few months younger than Kouachi and grew up in the same area of Gay Paree the 19th arrondissement where the Butte-Chaumont network was established.

Both men were jugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
and convicted together in Gay Paree in 2008 for their role in the network.

Hakim was sentenced to seven years for running a way station in Damascus for young French Moslems en route to fight US forces in Iraq. Kouachi received three years.

Hakim, and no doubt Kouachi, rejoined Al Qaedas Iraqi networks after they were released from prison and accompanied them in their transformation into Daesh, said Filiu.

The combat experience they acquired was useful in the cold-blooded liquidations they have carried out since.

Muslims segregated from French society in growing Islamist mini-states
Balkanization through multi-culturalism.America, behold your future.
A backdrop to the massacre in Paris on Wednesday by self-professed al Qaeda terrorists is that city officials have increasingly ceded control of heavily Muslim neighborhoods to Islamists, block by block.

France has Europe’s largest population of Muslims, some of whom talk openly of ruling the country one day and casting aside Western legal systems for harsh, Islam-based Shariah law.

“The situation is out of control, and it is not reversible,” said Soeren Kern, an analyst at the Gatestone Institute and author of annual reports on the “Islamization of France.”

“Islam is a permanent part of France now. It is not going away,” Mr. Kern said. “I think the future looks very bleak. The problem is a lot of these younger-generation Muslims are not integrating into French society. Although they are French citizens, they don’t really have a future in French society. They feel very alienated from France. This is why radical Islam is so attractive because it gives them a sense of meaning in their life.”

While not a complete safe-haven for al Qaeda-type operatives, Paris and other French cities have become more fertile places for Muslim extremists in the past decade. City leaders have allowed virtual Islamic mini-states to thrive as Muslims gain power to govern in their own way.

“There are no-go areas not just in Paris, but all over France, where they are effectively in control,” said Robert Spencer, who directs JihadWatch.org, a nonprofit that monitors Muslim extremists.

“They’re operating with impunity, apparently secure in the knowledge that authorities cannot or will not act decisively to stop them,” he said. “And with the universal denial and obfuscation of the clear motive for the Charlie Hebdo attack, they have good reason to think that.”

The attackers who killed 12 people at the offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo claimed to be members of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen. Witnesses said they spoke perfect French, a strong indication that they are homegrown terrorists who received help from AQAP or another group.

Mideast Immigrants to US Pose Huge Security Threat
A new study shows that the number of immigrants in the United States jumped 3 percent in three years -- to a record 41.3 million in 2013 -- and that the nearly 300,000 who came from Moslem countries pose a major national security threat, the report's co-author told Newsmax on Thursday.

"All of that does raise national security concerns, and I don't think there has been any consideration of that," said Steven Camarota, research director for the Center for Immigration Studies.

The Washington-based nonprofit organization released the study on Thursday. It is based on an analysis of Census data from 2010 to last year. Camarota conducted the study and co-authored it with CIS demographer Karen Zeigler.

Report cites Lal Masjid, Jamia Hafsa 'waging war' against state
A video message by students of Jamia Hafsa, in which they invited Islamic State (IS) chief Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi to ''avenge'' the 2007 military raid on Lal Masjid, has been termed as waging war against the state.
Not nearly enough evidence.
A report by the Islamabad police, sent to the interior ministry, says the words spoken by the madressah students in the video released by Shuhada Foundation come under Sections 121/121-A 505(1)b/505(2) of Pakistan penal Code (PPC). The mentioned sections include attempt to wage war and the abetment to wage war [against the state].

Security agencies have already warned the government that due to his links with known militant groups and his anti-government rhetoric, the resurgence of Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz poses a security threat to law and order situation in the capital.
Nobody''s noticed that in the past seven years.
They also stressed the need for a check on the growing number of madressahs in Rawalpindi and Islamabad who also have overt and covert links with militant groups.

It may be mentioned that Ihtashamul Haq, one of the trustees of Lal Masjid Shuhada Foundation, filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) claiming that following the release of the video message, the capital police have started harassing him.
Harassment? Oh, dear. How horrifying.

Abadi called for the need for concerted international efforts to fight terrorism, pointing out that, "Iraq is currently engaged in a fierce war against terrorism, which is one, whether in Iraq or in La Belle France or the rest of the world, and that everybody should support Iraq in this war through desiccating the sources of terrorism, as well as stopping the funding and fight extreme ideas that have nothing to do with Islam."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli Hackers Develop Tech Tools To Grapple With BDS
[IsraelTimes]. Dozens of college students compete for three days to create digital tools to defend Israel

It takes a network to fight a network: in this case, a network of pro-Israel hackers to battle the network of boycotters that Israel has to contend with online and in the real world.

Thus was born the idea for Firewall, described as the first Israel Legitimacy Hackathon, a three-day contest held in Tel Aviv this week to produce digital tools to fight the delegitimization campaign being waged against the State of Israels right to exist.

And the winner was version 2.0 of the Virtual War Room (VWR), a site allowing activists from around the world to defend Israel in real time, online.

For their work, the students at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya behind the war room took home a $5,000 prize. The team automated a project they began during Israels summer war against Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-led fighters in Gazoo that helped counter the incessant chatter against Israel on news and opinion sites around the world.

Israel is being faced with a new type of challenge, noted Tel Avivs Reut Institute, which organized the event. Delegitimizers are using technological tools, like social media, to more effectively organize and communicate their message. Those who support Israels right to exist need an innovative set of tools that leverages our technological strengths and compensates for our numerical disadvantage. This hackathon aims to create these technological tools.

Firewall saw dozens of teams gathered for 72 hours of hacking and web organizing with the IDC students coming in first for an advanced and enhanced model of the project they first tried over the summer. The IDCs Virtual War Room, which operated during Operation Protective Edge, saw hundreds of students monitor web sites in 34 languages and 61 countries for anti-Israel comments and propaganda. The students countered the comments and links about the IDFs evil activities in Gazoo with Israels side of the story.

For the hackathon, the IDC students turned what had been a manual effort with hundreds of people checking out web sites, reading the comments, and responding into a web platform that would automatically seek out comments of interest, and allow pro-Israel activists to quickly respond appropriately using prepared materials and pinpointed responses on a platform that could be managed by just a small group.

This weeks event was open to college-age students, and drew participants from Israel, the United States, Canada, Argentina
...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita...
, South America, Sweden, and Great Britannia. In addition, a high-school team from the central Israel community of Maccabim-Reut participated after getting special permission from their school administration. Said Oded Anter, one of the students: In just a few months we will be joining the IDF, and our minds are focused on protecting and defending the State of Israel. Working on apps like these is much more interesting than developing pointless games or coming up with ideas for new start-ups.

The Reut Institute is a policy group concerned with helping to shape the future of Israeli society. Established in 2004, Reut has worked closely with every Israeli government, producing studies and position papers on everything from security to the high price of consumer goods to the role of the diaspora in modern Jewish life. The group also runs numerous programs to encourage women, Arabs, and the disenfranchised to share the bounty of Israeli society, as part of its Israel 15 vision referring to efforts to make Israel among the top 15 most prosperous, equitable, and livable societies in the world.

As a result, the Institute has sponsored cutting-edge events and programs, such as XLN Labs, Israels first open-source 3D printer lab. Last summer, Reut and XLN sponsored a 3D printer hackathon to produce devices and products to make life easier for the disabled.

The Firewall hackathon is right in line with Reuts work, said Director Gidi Grinstein. Reut is all about Tikkun Olam, making the world a better place. We are Israels leading social innovation organization that focuses on strategic research and development for Israel. Our work focuses on identifying relevancy gaps between the work of the decision makers and the reality on the ground in the fields of socialeconomic development, the Jewish world, Israels national security, and this event, we believe, will contribute greatly to those goals.

Israeli Power Company Prepares To Cut Supply To PA
[Ynet]. Israel Electric Corporation CEO warns security chiefs of possible disturbances as NIS 1.7 billion debt leads to decision to stop electricity to the Paleostinian Authority.

Corporation CEO Eli Glickman warned Israel's security chiefs in a letter sent Sunday that the company would have to limit electricity to territories controlled by the Paleostinian Authority and the Jerusalem District Energy Company (JEDCO) which buys electricity from Israel and sells it to various cities in the West Bank because of a debt totalling NIS 1,700,843,315.

The letter was addressed to National Security Advisor Yossi Cohen, Shin Bet Chief Yoram Cohen, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai, Head of the Operations Directorate of the IDF Maj.-Gen. Yoav Har-Even, and Police Commissioner Maj.-Gen. Yohanan Danino.

Glickman requested that they raise alertness in the forces they led, on both an operational and intelligence level, out of concern that limiting the power supply could lead to various responses by the Paleostinian population.

According to the letter, "the debt imposes a heavy burden on the company's cash flow. In light of the aforementioned facts, the Electric Corporation, with me as its chief, worked and will work as much as it can to collect the debt under discussion in order to preserve its financial stability.

"We therefore have no other choice, and the Electric Corporation, as a supplier of an essential service that is committed to all its customers, is obligated to begin working in the coming days to collect with the following methods: 1. limiting the power supply; 2. not connecting new customers in areas the of the JDECO and the PA."

The letter noted that as of December 31, debt owed by the Paleostinian Authority and the Jerusalem District Electricity Company amounted to more than NIS 1.7 billion, of which NIS 1,054,914,845 were from the JDECO, and NIS 645,928,470 from the PA.

The letter also stated that the electric company must act in accordance with the law that regulates government companies, which establishes that a government company should operate based on the same considerations as a non-government company, unless the government has decided otherwise.

"For this reason, as long as there is no other decision on the subject made by the government and approved by the committee, the company will act to collect the debt as described," wrote Glickman.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iranian journalists prevented from demonstrating in support of Paris victims
[RFE/RL] Security forces in Tehran prevented a gathering of Iranian journalists attempting to stage a demonstration in support for victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. The demonstration was attempted on January 8 near the building which had housed the Association of Iranian Journalists before it was shut down by former President Ahmadinejad's government in August 2009.

Witnesses said police and security forces prevented them from gathering in front of the building, which has been sealed since it was raided in 2009. A source said that there was a heavy police presence on the streets leading to the Association of Iranian Journalists before the scheduled demonstration.

He said journalists had planned to put flowers and light candles in front of the building, but they were forced to leave after an hour of trying to bargain with the police. One journalist who was planning to participate in the solidarity gathering said, "We just wanted to express our disgust regarding the terrorist attack."

On January 7, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said, "All acts of terrorism against innocent people are alien to the doctrine and teachings of Islam," but added, "making use of freedom of expression... to humiliate the monotheistic religions and their values and symbols is unacceptable."

Al-Qaeda-linked militants blow up 13th century Muslim tomb in Syria
[Ynet] Nusra Front Islamist snuffies linked to al-Qaeda have blown up the 13th century tomb of a revered Islamic scholar in southern Syria, Syrian state news agency SANA and monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported.

The mausoleum of Imam Nawawi is in Nawa in Deraa province near the Jordanian border, a town captured by groups fighting the Syrian government in November.

The Nusra Front follows the same puritanical interpretation of Sunni Islam adopted by the Islamic State

US-led forces drop nearly 5,000 bombs on Islamic State
[IsraelTimes] Hundreds of vehicles destroyed in coalition Arclight airstrikes, halting terror group's advance in Iraq, Pentagon says

US-led aircraft have dropped nearly 5,000 bombs in the air war against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadists in Iraq and Syria, damaging or destroying more than 3,000 targets including tanks, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The latest figures released by the US military signal a steady expansion in the scale of the air campaign launched in August and also reveal an adversary with hundreds of armored and other sophisticated vehicles at its disposal.

Since coalition air raids started in Iraq in August and in Syria in late September, US and allied aircraft have struck 58 tanks, 184 Humvee armored vehicles, 303 pickup trucks, 26 armored vehicles and 394 other vehicles, according to statistics from the Pentagon.

Most of the vehicles, many of them US made, had been seized by IS fighters from the retreating Iraqi army.

US military officers could not say how many of the targets were damaged or destroyed but front man Colonel Steven Warren told news hounds: ?I?m confident the destruction level is high.?

It also remained unclear how many tanks or other vehicles the IS group still has in its arsenal after the air raids.

Warren said the military did not want to say what percentage of IS weapons or vehicles had been destroyed because ?we don?t want our enemy to know how much we know about them.?

The United States and its Western and Arab allies have carried out 1,676 strikes so far and launched 4,775 munitions, officials said.

American commanders say the raids have halted the advance of the IS group in Iraq, disrupted its crude oil smuggling network and hampered its ability to move on the ground.

But the IS gunnies remain in control of large swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq and continue to receive new recruits.

The figures come a day after US officials said for the first time they were investigating at least two incidents in which civilians may have been killed in air strikes in Iraq and Syria, and three other cases were being assessed for possible probes.

Coalition aircraft have flown a total of 15,465 sorties in ?Operation Inherent Resolve,? including attack missions as well as refueling runs and surveillance flights, officials said.

The vast majority of air strikes and other military flights are carried out by US aircraft but officials have declined to provide a breakdown of how many sorties were carried out by partner countries.

The US share of the operation already has surpassed the American role in the 2011 air campaign in Libya.
