Charity to Rapture Sudanese Christians
An international relief agency plans to airlift some 3,400 Christians out of Sudan, where they face increasing persecution from the Islamist government.

The Barnabas Fund has already whisked about 5,000 Christians from the embattled country, where President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has vowed to create a “a 100 percent Islamic constitution, without communism or secularism or Western [influences].” The Christians will be taken to South Sudan, a smaller nation formed in 2011 where religious freedom is better tolerated.

Egypt ex-VP ElBaradei's party 'shocked' over lawsuit
[Al Ahram] Constitution Party Media Secretary Khaled Dawoud expresses his "shock" at news that the party's founder and former Egyptian vice president Mohamed ElBaradei
Egyptian law scholar and sometime Iranian catspaw. He was head of the IAEA from December 1997 to November 2009. At some point during his tenure he was purchased by the Iranians. ElBaradei and the IAEA were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for something in 2005. ElBaradei served on the Board of Trustees of the International Crisis Group, a lefty NGO that is bankrolled by the Carnegie Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as George Soros' Open Society Institute. After the fall of Mubarak he ran for president. He lost.
may face trial for having resigned, calling the legal petition part of a campaign against ElBaradei.
Helwan University criminal law professor Ahmed El-Ateeq filed a case against ElBaradei this week charging he "breached national trust."

"No official was ever charged in any country in the world with a crime for simply resigning from his post," Dawoud maintains.

Dawoud argues, however, that El-Ateeq used financial law in his case against ElBaradei, which he says doesn't apply, according to the Constitution Party's blurb.

He adds that reviewing such a case so quickly - a Cairo court set the trial date for 19 September, which also coincides with the judges' annual holiday - is proof of a "rabid campaign aimed at tarnishing [ElBaradei's] reputation and stances." He also points out that this isn't the first time the Constitution Party has stood against a campaign against them.

ElBaradei resigned citing that he could not bear the responsibility for decisions that led to violence witnessed at the dispersal of sit-ins on 14 August that were pressing to reinstate president Mohamed Morsi. Protests against the violent dispersal erupted in the days following, with hundreds dying and thousands injured in festivities.

April 6 Youth Movement welcomes Safwat Hegazy's arrest
[Al Ahram] The April 6 Youth Movement expressed satisfaction with Safwat Hegazy's recent arrest.
In a statement released Wednesday via its Facebook page, the youth movement said "the preacher of secession and blood bravely ran away in disguise instead of being on the frontlines.

"Hegazy, a hard line preacher who is closely affiliated with the Moslem Brüderbund, has continuously called upon ousted President Morsi's supporters to fiercely defend and protect the "legitimacy" of the deposed regime.

According to a security official, Hegazy was jugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
at a checkpoint in Siwa oasis in western Egypt before he was about to escape the country passing through the Libyan border.

The condemned Hegazy's speech which "jeopardized" the country's stability.

"Preacher of secession and blood, you might not have been involved in the actual killing but your rhetoric was powerful enough to bring about the shedding of more blood. You must now be aware of the consequences of your words and incitements. Your supporters now realise how not all that shines is gold and that empty vessels make the loudest sound."

Hegazy's arrest came as part of security forces ongoing efforts to arrest major Moslem Brüderbund figures, amongst them the Brotherhood's Supreme Guide, Mohamed Badie.

Nour Party : Removing article 219 from Constitution breaches road map
[Al Ahram] Sherif Taha, the official spokesperson of Al Nour Salafist Party stated that removing article 219 from the 2012 constitution is considered a breach of the political road map agreed upon by different political groups last month.

In press statement on Wednesday, Taha condemned the 10 members of the technical committee, who were assigned by the interim president to amend the Constitution, for proposing the deletion of article 219, saying that the article was already endorsed by Al Azhar itself and not just the Islamist parties.

"Deleting this article will make many feel that what happened on 30 June was a move against the Islamic identity of Egypt, the thing which nobody wants."

Article 219 from the 2012 constitution stipulates that the principles of Islamic sharia include general evidence, the foundational principles of Islamic jurisprudence, the reliable sources from among the Sunni schools of thought.

Taha said that article 219 was an explanatory article to interpret article 2 of the 1971 Constitution.

Article 2 of the Constitution says that Islam is the state's religion, and Arabic is its official language, and the principles of Islamic sharia form the main source of legislation.

Article 219 caused controversy as many human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
activists deemed it discriminatory against non-Sunni religious minorites.

"The case of Egypt's Islamic identity is not the cause of a certain party, but it is the cause of the Egyptian people and there is no disagreement regarding it," Taha said.

Egypt prime minister places to-be-released Hosni Mubarak under house arrest
[Al Ahram] Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi ordered the placement of ousted president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
, who is expected to be released from jail in the next 48 hours following a court order issued Wednesday, under mandatory house arrest.
According to Egyptian state TV, the prime minister issued his decision late Wednesday evening while acting in the capacity of deputy military commander under the rules of the currently enforced emergency law.

Mubarak still faces more than one trial on corruption charges and a retrial on charges of complicity in the murder of more than 800 protesters during the January 25 uprising that ousted him.

Hosni Mubarak will also remain on a travel ban list.

Egypt Court Orders Mubarak Freed
[An Nahar] An Egyptian court Wednesday ordered ex-president Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
freed while he stands trial for corruption and killing protesters, as authorities pressed their roundup of supporters of his ousted Islamist successor.

The Egyptian deputy military ruler said, however, that Mubarak will be sent to his room.

There was no indication of whether a release was imminent. In the past, prosecutors have filed new charges to keep Mubarak in jail after courts have ordered his conditional release.

Egypt media stand united to back Brotherhood crackdown
[OMANTRIBUNE] Cairo Egypt's media, both public and private, have lined up behind the government in portraying its fight against the Moslem Brüderbund as a "war on terror" and vilifying foreign journalists.

As police and troops chase down members of the Islamist group, from which ousted president Mohamed Mursi hails, the media have fanned the flames against the organization.

And the foreign media have been accused of taking sides for covering the Islamists as well as the government, earning harsh criticism from the state and local press.

Egyptian media have taken part in a "campaign against the Moslem Brüderbund and other Islamist currents", political commentator Hisham Kassem said.

"In one year of Mursi's presidency, more journalists were prosecuted than in the 185 years of the Egyptian press before," he said.

"Now, the media are exploiting the situation the Brotherhood is in to pay them back."

For days, Egypt's three state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
channels have broadcast under a banner in English reading 'Egypt fighting terrorism'.

They report around the clock on the latest festivities between Mursi supporters and security forces that have claimed nearly 900 lives since Wednesday.

But while they show footage of maimed and killed security forces, they offer no pictures of the hundreds of protesters killed in the violence.

Between broadcasts, patriotic songs play over footage of the armed forces carrying out military exercises and showing kindness to civilians.

A piece entitled 'The Black History of the Brotherhood Organisation' purports to show the group's violent history.

It includes archive footage of Brotherhood members, as well as the attempted murder of president Gamal Abdul Nasser and the liquidation of president Anwar Sadat by Islamists.

It ends with clips from recent festivities, showing gunnies purportedly belonging to the group, and buildings set ablaze.

The country's newspapers have been equally uniform in their criticism of the group and in rallying behind the government and the army chief who installed it, Abdel Fattah Al Sisi.

Government daily Al Ahram on Monday devoted its entire front page -- and nine separate headlines -- to a speech by Sisi a day earlier.

Abdel Halim Qandil, editor-in-chief of the independent Sawt Al Ummah daily, sees the media's united front as a normal response to the country's "national battle".

A fierce critic of Islamists, he accuses the western media of swinging between two extremes: hatred for Islam and love of the Brotherhood.

"This is what has created serious anger and suspicion on the part of Egyptians" towards foreign media, he said.

Egypt Embassy In Bangladesh Partly Closes After Bomb Threat
[Ynet] The Egyptian Embassy in Bangladesh closed its consular section until the end of the month on Wednesday after receiving a bomb threat in protest against the killing of supporters of the Moslem Brüderbund in Cairo, police and embassy officials said.

Rafiqul Islam, a senior police official in Dhaka's diplomatic zone, said security had also been stepped up outside the embassy.

"Stop genocide on Brotherhood and supporters of Morsi otherwise, on behalf of Bangladesh, I warn you that something wrong will happen," Rafiqul quoted the letter as saying. It was not immediately clear who was behind Wednesday's threat.

Cleric in Australia says Buddhists, Hindus should be counted, killed
Police in Australia will be asked to investigate comments made by an Islamic cleric after he told followers in Adelaide that Buddhists and Hindus should be counted "one by one" and killed.

Sharif Hussein, who has previously attracted attention from security agencies, told up to 25 followers that Muslims were being raped and slaughtered by members of other religions, before praying that Buddhists and Hindus be killed. The Tunisian-born cleric said, "Oh Allah, count the Buddhists and the Hindus one by one. Oh Allah, count them and kill them and spare none of them."

Subtitled excerpts from the March 22 sermon, delivered during Friday prayers at the then Allenby Gardens headquarters of the Islamic Da'wah Centre of South Australia, were posted on YouTube on Monday. Hussein refused to comment yesterday but told another Islamic leader that his remarks had been taken out of context in the short clip.

South Australian Liberal senator Cory Bernardi said he would refer the video to authorities. He said, "This hate speech has no place in our society and needs to be publicly condemned by all Australians, including by members of the Muslim community. I'll make sure the relevant authorities are aware of it because parts of this speech advocates for physical violence against other people on the basis of their religious beliefs. That is completely unacceptable in Australia."

Wagdy Elgeezawy, the president of the center where the sermon was given, said he spoke to Hussein yesterday. He was told Hussein's remarks were made immediately after "atrocities" against Muslims in Myanmar were referred to. Elgeezawy said, "He asked Allah to count them and to finish them off exactly like they are doing to Muslims. There is a difference between a wish and something to be committed. This has to be clear."

Elgeezawy said that although he shared the cleric's concern about the killing of Muslims, he did not agree with the use of such "strong" words. He said, "I believe that if someone commits something horrible against your family, you would have such feelings of avenging what happened. His words are obviously being taken out of context."

#1  This "cleric" Sharif Hussein reminds me of a Klingon.

"Oh Allah, count the Buddhists and the Hindus one by one. Oh Allah, count them and kill them and spare none of them."

How about reversing this message without the death threat.

"Oh Allen, count the Mohamadeans one by one. Oh Allen, count them and make them sterile and spare none of them."

Live by your own devices Sharif.

Manning says he wants to live as a woman, be called Chelsea
[CNN] Gloria sez: Honest to God, we don't make this stuff up.
Bradley Manning wants to be a woman.

The U.S. Army soldier sentenced this week to 35 years in prison for leaking 750,000 pages of classified documents to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks said Thursday in a statement read on NBC's "Today" show that will seek hormone therapy and live as a female named Chelsea.

"As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me," Manning said in the statement. "I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition."

Manning's lawyer, David Coombs, told "Today" that he hopes officials at Fort Leavenworth military prison will provide his client the hormone therapy.

"I'm hoping Fort Leavenworth would do the right thing and provide that," Coombs said. "If Fort Leavenworth does not, then I am going to do everything in my power to make sure that they are forced to do so."
Like what, exactly -- pee on the floor of your cell?
The issue of Manning's gender identity repeatedly surfaced in his court martial on espionage charges. A widely circulated picture released by the military shows Manning in a blonde wig. Speaking in the sentencing phase of his court martial last week, Manning said that at the time he decided to leak the documents, he was "dealing with a lot of issues" -- a reference to his gender identity crisis.

In an e-mail to his sergeant titled, "My Problem," Manning included the picture of himself in the wig.

"It's not going away, it's haunting me more and more as I get older," Manning wrote in the e-mail. "Now, the consequences of it are dire, at a time when it's causing me great pain in itself. As a result, I'm not sure what to do about it."

An Army psychologist called by the defense said Manning appeared to be isolated and under intense pressure as a male soldier struggling with gender identity issues.
Why again did the Army trust this young twerp with military secrets?
Manning's announcement comes a day after a military judge sentenced him to 35 years in prison for leaking hundreds of thousands of U.S. military and diplomatic documents.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria: France threatens military force in wake of chemical weapons claims
France has threatened to use military force against Syria despite a UN security council statement which failed to agree any action to be taken against the Assad regime for an alleged chemical weapons attack in eastern Damascus.
And if it wasn't Assad who actually used it, then what?
Exactly how will the French threaten military force against Syria? What assets do the French have that could be staged to the region and used to back up their threat? Or is this just a 'Ligne rouge'?
The security council met on Wednesday night after calls by Britain and other western countries for a response to the attack in the eastern suburbs in which hundreds and possibly more than 1,000 civilians died.
Samantha Power not available for meeting, something about 'date night'.
There were no marks or signs of blood on their bodies and chemical weapons experts said they showed telltale signs of being poisoned by organophosphate based nerve agents.

But after earlier versions of a statement were watered down by China and Russia, which have consistently rejected international action against President Bashar al-Assad, the final version did not even call for UN inspectors, already in Damascus, to investigate. Instead, it called for further "clarity" about what happened.
Little requirement for inspection teams if you already know what took place.
Russia went so far as to call the incident a deliberate "provocation" by the rebels themselves.
Rebel casualties? No, mostly just civilians. Oh, ok.

Hizbullah Turns Beirut's Southern Suburbs into 'Fortress'
[An Nahar] Streets leading into powerful Hizbullah's stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut have been cordoned off, as guards in civilian clothes search a long line of cars.

Hizbullah was already accused of running a "state-within-a-state," but two boom-mobileings in the area in as many months have spurred Hizbullah to turn the suburbs into a fortress.

At entrances to "dahieh", or the suburbs, young loyalists of the group which has thrown its military weight behind Syria's embattled president order drivers to open up their car boots.

Others wear uniform, carry walkie-talkies and are members of the Hizbullah-run "Union of Municipalities of the Southern Suburbs".

They also stop and ask for the IDs of bikers entering the densely populated neighborhood.

"It's time to be vigilant. People are more relaxed when they see us," a Hizbullah guard told Agence La Belle France Presse on condition of anonymity.

Backed by Tehran and a key ally of Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
, the heavily armed Hizbullah suffered a severe blow on Thursday when a boom-mobile killed 27 people.

The attack, Leb's bloodiest since its 1975-1990 civil war, came just over a month on from another car kaboom in the same area that maimed around 50 people.

Thursday's bombing was claimed by an unknown cell that said it was Dire Revenge™ for Hizbullah's engagement in Syria's war alongside Assad's troops.

Hizbullah chief His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
accused radical Sunni Islamists of staging the attack.

Beyond the improvised checkpoints at main roads and bridges around the suburbs, drivers park their cars in cordoned-off streets and metal barriers block off alleyways.

Critics accuse Hizbullah of using its arsenal to impose its will, such measures reinforce the fortress-like image of the southern suburbs, where the Lebanese army and police rarely venture.

The party has long worked in secret, especially when it comes to security. But today, its draconian measures appear to be making residents feel safer.

In the Rowais area, near the target of the latest kaboom, people conceal their fears when speaking to journalists.

"Naturally, everything has changed. This was a safe neighborhood," said Moussa, a thirty-something who owns a lamp store damaged by the August 15 bombing.

But the man who "miraculously" survived the attack added: "We are not afraid. Even the Israelis couldn't scare us."

Al-Mustaqbal to Hizbullah: Fighting Takfiris is the State's Responsibility
[An Nahar] Al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
bloc on Tuesday lashed out at Hizbullah's "war against terrorists" in Syria, saying that the party should have consulted the Lebanese state in that matter.

"(Hizbullah leader) His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...
did not consult the Lebanese people or the state before going through with what he calls a war against Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
s," al-Mustaqbal politicians said in a released statement after the bloc's weekly meeting at the Center House.

They pointed out: "He did not consider the interests of Leb and its people."

The MPs stressed that fighting criminals, forces of Evil and outlaws is the responsibility of the state and its institutions.

In a broadcast speech he gave at a ceremony marking the end of the July 2006 war, Nasrallah explained that his combat in Syria is against Takfiris, vowing that he is "ready to personally go fight in Syria if necessary."

"Nasrallah and Hizbullah are held responsible for the deteriorating security, political and economic conditions in the country and which expose Leb to all kinds of dangers," the bloc stated.

"It is all a result of the reckless decision to get involved in the fighting in Syria."

The politicians condemned last week's "terrorist crime" in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

"We denounce all forms of violence against any human being in general, and against the Lebanese in particular," they said.

A huge blast took the lives of 27 people and maimed 280 others last week in Beirut's southern suburb.

"We call on the concerned judicial and security bodies to intensify their investigation to uncover the perpetrators, try them in courts and penalize them."

The MPs noted that these bodies are the "only parties with the legal, political and popular cover tasked with preserving people's security."

"We ask all concerned political authorities to support these bodies and safeguard them against political, party and sectarian interference.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
the bloc rejected the security measures adopted by Hizbullah following the blast.

"We denounce these procedures because they remind us of self-security measures that were adopted in the past and that lead to a demographic segregation between the Lebanese," it explained.

"This is an attack on the state and on legitimacy. Hizbullah should leave matters of security to official bodies."

Also, al-Mustaqbal bloc considered that Hizbullah's "policy of accusing parties of being traitors" affects the possibility of resuming national dialogue sessions.

The MPs reiterated calls for withdrawing Hizbullah fighters from Syria, expressing that this would be a start for resuming national dialogue "on the basis of believing in the state and its authority."

Lebanon army in 'total war' against terrorism
[Al Ahram] The Lebanese army is fighting a "total war" against terrorism whose aim is "to provoke sectarian strife" in the small Mediterranean country, army chief General Jean Kahwaji said Wednesday.
"We are faced today with one of the biggest dangers, which Arab and Western countries are already confronting, and that is terrorism, which strikes out whenever it has the chance," Kahwaji told a gathering of retired officers.

Heavily armed Hezbollah, a key ally of Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Leveler of Latakia...
, was struck last week by a massive car kaboom that left 27 people dead in its southern Beirut stronghold.

The attack came a month after another boom-mobile, also in that area, maimed some 50 people.

"I announce today that the army is engaged in a total war against terrorism. (The military) has been chasing for months a terrorist cell that prepares boom-mobiles and sends them to residential neighbourhoods," said Kahwaji, describing last Thursday's car blast as "one such" attack.

"The gravity, according to our intelligence, lies in the fact that this cell is not targeting any one region or community in particular, but that it aims to provoke sectarian strife by targeting different regions," said Kahwaji.

Geagea Calls on Chemical Experts to Inspect Ghouta, Urges U.N. Meeting over 'Horrific Massacre'

' Sherlocks present in Syria to inspect the Reef Damascus town where "a horrific massacre" took place earlier on Wednesday.

"We strongly condemn the horrific massacre that killed hundreds of civilians and children in Reef Damascus this morning," Geagea said in a released statement.

"And we call on the U.N. Sherlocks already present in the country to inspect the location of the massacre to uncover what really happened there," he added.

Geagea also called for an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting on the latest Syrian developments, "to take the necessary decisions in this matter."

"The Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
must also convene immediately to look into the massacre."

The LF leader remarked that Wednesday's attack cannot be considered in the same context as the ongoing military operations between the regime's forces and the opposition's rebels.

"The victims were killed in locations where no armed festivities that require such attacks take place," he pointed out.

"We call on all the Lebanese, regardless of their backgrounds and political views, to condemn this massacre for the human aspect it entails."

The Syrian National Coalition said that at least 1300 people were killed in a "chemical" attack in the Damascus suburban town of Ghouta.

The claim of a chemical attack, which could not be independently verified, was vehemently denied by the Syrian regime which said it was intended to hinder the mission of U.N. chemical weapons inspectors now in the country.

#2  Still would not be surprised if the AQ types were indeed the culprits here. Not like they don't have access to the stuff.

You're losing, so you absolutely have to get an advantage somehow. Direct focus of the world's anger to your enemy.

So what if some innocent bystanders are killed, it's furthering the agenda.

Russia Calls Syria Chemical Use Claim 'Provocation'
[An Nahar] Russia on Wednesday called Syrian opposition claims of the Damascus regime launching a chemical weapons attack that killed more than 1,300 people a "premeditated provocation."

The foreign ministry stressed that the reports were issued just as a U.N. chemical weapons inspection team had arrived in Syria and noted that "this makes us think that we are once again dealing with a premeditated provocation."

The foreign ministry said the claims were first reported "by partisan regional media all at once, as if by command" and argued that previous such reports had proven false.

The Russian ministry statement said the opposition appeared to be trying to undermine the chances of all sides agreeing to sit down for peace negotiations first mooted by Moscow and Washington in May.

Russia added that it was now "important to conduct an objective and professional investigation into what occurred."c

Israel Says Syria Regime Used Chemical Weapons
[An Nahar] Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said on Wednesday that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons, backing opposition claims of multiple deadly strikes around Damascus.

"In Syria, the regime has used chemical weapons and it's not the first time," Yaalon told Israeli defense correspondents.

"It's a life and death struggle between a regime based on the Alawite minority and a disparate opposition composed of Sunni Moslems, some Moslem Brüderbund members, others linked to al-Qaeda.

"We don't see any end to the fighting -- even the fall of (President Bashar) Assad won't bring it to a halt, there will a bloody settling of accounts over a long period," the minister said.

"We could see the implosion of Syria with the Alawites controlling the western part -- the coastal region and a corridor to Damascus -- and the Kurds and Sunnis controlling the east and north."

The head of research at Israeli military intelligence, Brigadier General Itai Brun, already said in April that he believed the Syrian regime had made use of its chemical weapons stockpiles against the rebels.

Syria's main opposition group accused the government of "massacring" more than 1,300 people in chemical weapons attacks near Damascus on Wednesday, saying many of the victims choked to death.

The accusation came as a team of U.N. inspectors was in Syria to probe previous allegations of chemical weapons strikes leveled against both sides during the 29-month conflict.

Western governments demanded immediate access for the inspectors to investigate the new allegations. Russia, a longstanding ally of the Damascus regime, echoed the call for an inquiry but said it suspected a "provocation" by the opposition and its foreign backers.

#1  I'd like to know what Israel really would like to see out of this Syrian civil war.

I know that Pencil-neck, Hezbi and Iran free to work their evil is not anything Israel wants on their border; BUT, is a Salafist, MoBro and/or Al-Q regime any better??

Personally I think they should just keep killing each other as long as they keep to their own back yards.

U.N. Security Council to Meet on Syria Attack Claims
[An Nahar] The U.N. Security Council was to meet at 3:00 pm (1900 GMT) Wednesday over reports of a chemical weapons attack in Syria that allegedly killed hundreds, diplomats said.

U.N. Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
's office said he was "shocked" by the reports of the attack and that U.N. inspectors in Syria to probe previous allegations were in discussions with Damascus.

Security Council members La Belle France, Britannia, the United States, Luxembourg and South Korea requested the meeting, which was to be held in the form of closed-door consultations, a diplomat said.

Gay Paree and London were to send a joint letter Wednesday to the secretary general asking him to order the team of U.N. experts in Syria to go to the scene to investigate.

The United States demanded that Syria provide immediate access to the site, while Russia, a close ally of the Syrian government, called the opposition claims a "provocation."

The main Syrian opposition group claims as many as 1,300 people were killed in a chemical weapons attack Wednesday on rebel areas near Damascus.

Videos distributed by activists, the authenticity of which could not immediately be verified, showed medics attending to suffocating children and hospitals being overwhelmed.

Report: Al-Asir Residing in Ein El-Hellhole
[An Nahar] Fugitive Salafist holy man Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir is residing in the Ein el-Hellhole Paleostinian refugee camp in southern Leb, reported An Nahar daily on Wednesday.

Intelligence information said that it was almost certain that he is staying at the Abdullah bin al-Zabir Mosque in the Tawari neighborhood in the camp.

It added that Islamist Haitham al-Shaabi and his armed supporters are providing him with protection.

Al-Asir is in contact with his supporters in various locations in Leb.

Fatah leader in Leb Munir al-Maqdah later denied these reports to Voice of Leb radio(93.3).

Singer turned Salafist Fadel Shaker meanwhile is residing in the Taamir neighborhood of Ein el-Hellhole and he is in constant communication with the holy man through common Lebanese and Paleostinian friends, said An Nahar.

In a related note, security sources told the daily that two of al-Asir's supporters Sheikhs Otham Hnaineh and Iyyad al-Saleh were released from custody after being given a stern warning against calling the Salafist holy man's to a rally.

A third holy man, Sheikh Assem al-Arefi, remains in jug.

He was tossed in the clink
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
for leading a campaign to garner al-Asir's supporters to rally in support of the runaway holy man.

On August 6, the army arrested two supporters of al-Asir Hadi Qawwas and Mohammed Wehbeh in the Sharhabil region near of Sidon over their involvement in June's festivities against the military institution.

The fighting near Sidon was sparked on June 23 when al-Asir's supporters shot up an army checkpoint, leaving around 18 soldiers and more than 20 gunnies dead.

The gunbattles were concentrated in the area of Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque and nearby buildings in Abra.
