Contractor-Owned MQ-9 Reaper Drones Will Watch Over Marines in Afghanistan
[TheDrive] The U.S. Navy has awarded General Atomics a contract worth more than $39.5 million to fly its own MQ-9 Reaper drones to keep watch over a U.S. Marine task force in Afghanistan, a possible plan The War Zone Was first to report on in January 2018. The deal comes as the Marines are sending personnel to train with the U.S. Air Force on operating these same drones as the former service moves ahead in developing its own large, multi-purpose unmanned aircraft.

The Pentagon announced the Navy had followed through on its initial proposal in its daily contracting announcement on June 19, 2018. According to that notice, the arrangement involves work in Yuma, Arizona, home to a Marine Corps Air Station, and Poway, California, where General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. has its headquarters, as well as in Afghanistan.

All of this will be in direct support of the Marine’s Task Force Southwest. This element is advising and assisting Afghan troops in the notorious Helmand province and in neighboring Nimroz province, both of which are situated along the border with Pakistan.

If the military can't monitor domestics, can civilian training missions? Maybe there's hope for the border yet.

Egypt calls for precautionary procedures to prevent terrorism reaching Sahel-Saharan states
[AlAhram] Major General Mohammed al-Keshki, assistant minister of defence for external relations, affirmed in Nigeria that Egypt is establishing a Sahel-Saharan counterterrorism headquarters in Cairo

During participation in the 7th meeting of the ministers of defence of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) held in Nigeria from 20-22 June, Egypt has called for precautionary measures to be undertaken to prevent terrorism from reach community member states.

Cairo suggested activating mechanisms of cooperation and coordination between national institutions in these countries and at a regional level within the framework of comprehensive military and security cooperation against the threat of terrorism.

Egypt also warned of the consequences of terrorism infiltrating Sahel-Saharan states in light of rapid developments in the capabilities of terrorist organizations in training and arming, as well as technological advancements and funding sources.

The head of the Egyptian delegation in the meeting, Major General Mohammed al-Keshki, assistant minister of defence for external relations, affirmed the possibility of terrorist organizations transfering their activities from their places of origin to the vicinity of Sahel-Saharan states, especially as conflict settling efforts in some stricken countries appear to be slow moving.

The head of the Egyptian delegation also announced doubling the military aid allocation presented to Sahel-Saharan states and inviting the general secretary of CEN-SAD to visit Egypt.

Al-Keshky affirmed Egypt is establishing a Sahel-Saharan counterterrorism headquarters in Cairo, adding that Egypt will host the annual Sahel-Saharan counterterrorism training effort, in light of Cairo's desire to enhance military cooperation between Sahel-Saharan states.

Al-Keshky also presented Egypt's vision on counterterrorism and the burden it has imposed on military and security institutions, in addition to the political challenges and obstacles that slow social and economic development.

The Egyptian representative referred to Egypt's efforts in peacekeeping in crisis stricken countries in Africa, being one of the countries contributing the most to peacekeeping forces, in light of Cairo's interest in preserving security and stability in the African continent.

CEN-SAD was established in February 1998 by six countries, but then its membership has since grown to 29. One of its main goals is to achieve economic unity through the implementation of the free movement of people and goods, the expanse encompassed by member states a free trade area.

Arabia
Ansarullah Leader: We welcomed UN supervision of Hodeidah port, but they are liars
[EN.ABNA24] Leader of the Yemeni Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik al-Houthi, on Wednesday said he has offered the UN envoy Martin Griffiths in his recent visit to Sanaa to place Hodeidah port under the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
supervision.

"We welcomed a supervisory, technical and logistical role of the United Nations on the port of Hodeidah, but they are liars, they just made baseless justifications", Sayyed al-Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
said in a speech to the nation aired by al-Masira satellite TV.

The leader vowed to resist the US-backed Saudi-led aggression coalition, affirming that "Britannia, La Belle France and other European countries involving in support to the coalition’s assault will be confronted too."

"The foreign military assault on the western coast has not begun six days ago as the coalition’s media claims, but it has started more than two years ago."

The aggression forces have mobilized all their efforts, money and weapons for the western coast battle and the geographical factors have helped them to progress in the coastal strip, as an open area, Sayyed al-Houthi added.

Sayyed al-Houthi noted that the coalition forces have suffered heavy losses in the battle and lost military leaders, including senior Saudi, Emirati, American and Israeli officers, who were part of "Blackwater" troops.

"The battles have not stopped over 32 months in the western coast from Bab al-Mandab area until the recent period in Duraihmi and al-Dawar areas," al-Houthi said.

He confirmed that the coming battles will be more difficult and painful for the aggression forces.

"A large area of the coast is still free under the control of the people, the army and the popular committees," Sayyed al-Houthi said.

Sayyed al-Houthi said that "the aggression forces claim that Iran’s missiles come through the port of Hodeidah, although all ships entering the port are strictly inspected by both the United Nations and the coalition in Djibouti."

"More than 400 items of essential goods have been banned by the aggression forces from entering the port without any fair justification," he added.

"We target battleships that threaten the Yemeni coast and back the coalition aggression on Hodeidah," Sayyed al-Houthi explained.

He underlined that the coalition’s air bombing on headquarters of humanitarian and relief organizations is what poses a threat to relief work in Yemen.

Sayyed al-Houthi described the position of the coalition forces in the western coast as miserable, saying that they are "besieged and targeted at every moment."

"All the field penetrations will remain confrontable, and our will will never be broken," Sayyed said.

In Turkey's pious heartland, faith in Erdogan trumps economy worries
[GEO.TV] In a dusty business park in Konya, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
’s conservative industrial heartland, Ahmet Hakan Umit sells imported machine tools that are quickly becoming too expensive for his customers.

Sales are down as much as 30 percent this year as a deep dive in the lira currency has pushed up the cost of the computerised lathes he imports from Asia.

"I’m scared. Even one deal falling through can mean a huge setback," the 25-year-old finance director of Umit Makina said looking out on a showroom filled with Samsung machine tools costing as much as $350,000 (£264,222) each.

President Tayyip Erdogan’s comments that he wanted greater control of monetary policy after Sunday’s elections sparked the lira’s latest sell-off, forcing the central bank to hike rates aggressively.

But the currency’s 20-percent slide and higher interest rates don’t appear to have eroded the support in Konya for Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AK Party, thanks to religious loyalty and a newfound prosperity over the party’s 16-year rule.

Umit doesn’t plan to vote for the AKP in the parliamentary and presidential vote, but he expects it to win.

"Many firms are unhappy right now, but people will keep voting for the same government."

Known as one of Turkey’s most pious places, Konya has been a bulwark of support for the AKP: nearly 75 percent of the city’s votes in 2015 parliamentary elections went to the ruling party.

The city of 2 million has more recently become a symbol of what can be achieved in the long-neglected central Anatolian heartland, boosted by the AKP’s 47 billion lira ($10 billion) of investments including roads, hospitals and industrial zones.

Under Erdogan, Konya and neighbouring cities have become known as "Anatolian tigers" for their fast growth and entrepreneurial zeal.

They are also home to a new class of conservative industrialists who, like Erdogan, see themselves as at odds with the secular establishment that dominated society and business for decades and shut out the religious Turks who form the backbone of AKP support.

The most popular, and divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
, politician in modern Ottoman Turkish history, Erdogan has more recently overseen a widening crackdown against opponents, further unnerving global investors.

Saddam Hussein’s daughter mourns father’s deputy Douri: source
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The daughter of Iraq’s late president Saddam Hussein has mourned the death of his former deputy, Izzat al-Douri, who the news about his survival have been conflicting.

A source close to the lawyer of Raghad Saddam Hussein, Haytham al-Hersh, was quoted by Iraqi website Sky Press saying that the lawyer had been asked by his client to send a condolence message to the family of Izzat al-Douri.

According to the source, Douri died of a hematological illness at a Tunisian hospital.

Douri’s exact whereabouts have been unknown since a U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 toppled former leader Saddam Hussein. Occasional reports have been made of his death but none were confirmed.

A video was shared in April, featuring Duri in a speech commemorating the establishment of the now-defunct Baath Party, which he claimed to have been from Baghdad. He warned of "a popular armed revolt to eliminate the traitors". He blamed the current authorities for the death of millions of Iraqis and destruction of Iraqi cities.

Iraq court rules in support of manual recount of parliament votes
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s top court ruled on Thursday in support of a parliament-adopted legislative amendment that allows a manual recount of votes in May’s parliament elections.

Hamas paid family to claim Gaza baby was killed by Israeli tear gas
[Times of Israel] A 20-year-old Palestinian indicted Thursday on terror-related charges told Israeli investigators during his interrogation that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar paid his relatives to falsely tell the media that his baby cousin died of tear gas inhalation.

The story of baby Layla Ghandour's death, purportedly from inhaling tear gas fired by Israel at the Gaza border, made headlines around the world last month and intensified global criticism of Israel's handling of Hamas-spurred violence at the fence.

On May 28, IDF forces arrested Mahmoud Omar along with another member of Fatah's armed wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, after they attempted to infiltrate into Israel and torch an unmanned IDF post, the Southern District Attorney's indictment against him said.

Omar had been acting as the lookout while two other members of his squad were to cut through the fence and cross into Israel. The group did not manage to carry out the attack as they came under IDF fire. Israeli forces captured Omar and one other accomplice, while the third attacker managed to flee, according to the indictment.

A 20-year-old Palestinian indicted Thursday on terror-related charges told Israeli investigators during his interrogation that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar paid his relatives to falsely tell the media that his baby cousin died of tear gas inhalation.

The story of baby Layla Ghandour's death, purportedly from inhaling tear gas fired by Israel at the Gaza border, made headlines around the world last month and intensified global criticism of Israel's handling of Hamas-spurred violence at the fence.

The group did not manage to carry out the attack as they came under IDF fire. Israeli forces captured Omar and one other accomplice, while the third attacker managed to flee, according to the indictment.

IDF troops found wire-cutters as well as a bottle of gasoline and a video camera at the scene.

During his questioning, Omar told interrogators the details of the planned attack and detailed his involvement in other terror-related activities. The suspect also disclosed that he was related to Layla Ghandour, the 8-month-old baby whose May 14 death was originally reported to have been caused by inhalation of tear gas sprayed by Israeli forces at Gaza border protesters. The story of the baby's purported death at the hands of Israel dominated global media at the time, becoming one of the central elements of reporting on Palestinian opposition to the May 14 inauguration of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

According to the indictment, Omar told authorities that two weeks prior to his arrest, he was among the 40,000 Gazans taking part in the May 14 protests at the border when his mother called to inform him that his baby cousin had died.

Upon arriving home shortly thereafter, the suspect was told that Layla had died of a blood disease similar to the one that took the life of the deceased infant's brother, who succumbed to the condition at the same age in 2017.

However, Omar told authorities, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar paid Layla's parents, Miriam and Anwar Ghandour, NIS 8,000 ($2,206) to tell the media that the infant had died due to tear gas inhalation at the Gaza protests.

discussed the Iranian nuclear deal amidst a host of other issues facing the Middle East with King Abdullah II of Jordan, while at a presser in Amman on Thursday.

"We on the European side say that we want to preserve the Iranian nuclear deal. Of course we have a lot in common when it comes to the issue of ballistic rocket programs, the presence in Syria, the war in Yemen, where aggressive tendencies of Iran must not only be discussed but where we urgently need solutions," Merkel said.
Mutti didn't actually suggest any solutions...
King Abdullah thanked Germany for understanding "the great burden of the Syria refugee crisis" and for being the largest donor of the Brussels conference.

In addition, Abdullah stressed that "There can be no peace, nor stability in the region without a just and lasting solution that leads to the establishment of an independent Paleostinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in peace and security."
The king didn't suggest how that might come to pass. We can see how it's not coming.
Merkel echoed his remarks by saying it is of central interest to Jordan "to resolve the situation of Paleostinian refugees, who have already been here for a very long time, by accepting a two-state solution."

Sings Palestine, "Israel, honey,
I ain't got a barrel of... money,
So I'll stick by your side,
A malign conjoined bride,
And ululate, shaheed by shaheed."

Pres. Rouhani: Iranians never surrender to US’ plots, pressures
[EN.ABNA24] President described the state TV, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), as being at the forefront of enemies’ psychological war, which is aimed at killing people’s hope and trust, saying: “The national media has a very effective role in creating hope in people and increasing vitality and unity, as well as integrity in the society”.

Speaking in a meeting with IRIB chief and senior managers late on Wednesday, Dr Hassan Rouhani said: “The importance of IRIB is accepted by everybody and interaction between the government and the national media, which is at the heart of intellectual, cultural, social and media issues of the country, is very important”.

Today, social capital is the most valuable thing in the country, said the President adding: “Promoting trust and solidarity between people and the system is an important principle and the national media can have a very effective role in creating hope in the society”.

He also went on to describe IRIB as having a very effective role in national security, saying: “Today, we are in a situation where the most spiteful radical enemies are before the Iranian nation, and because of the 40 years of success in different international, regional and economic stability fields in the recent years, they are spitefully bearing animosity towards not only the system, but also the name and people of Iran”.

Terror Networks
First-ever global conference of national counter-terrorism chiefs will strengthen cooperation, build ‘resilient' States
[UN News] Heads of counter-terrorism agencies from across the world will be meeting at UN Headquarters in New York next week for the first time, to pool expertise, resources and ideas to fight back against the growing scourge of international terrorism.

In an interview with UN News ahead of the landmark forum, the official who heads up the world body’s Office of Counter-Terrorism - which came into being just a year ago - said that it would give those leading the fight from a local to international level, the chance to "show our unity" and speak with "one professional voice".

Under-Secretary-General of the Office of Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, said that defeating terror groups such as ISIL, otherwise known as Dae’sh, which has been mostly driven out of Iraq in the past year, must involve "the family level ‐ the level of local communities, the level of State, and the level of international cooperation. Only this kind of approach can be comprehensive."

The High-Level Conference on Counter-Terrorism, takes placed next Thursday and Friday, and will focus on strengthening cooperation "to combat the evolving threat of terrorism."
