Three army corps: changes in the Ukrainian Armed Forces system
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] The Armed Forces of Ukraine have begun an active transition to a corps command system. Three new units have been created in a month.
In most armies, corps are task organized. The Russians have a corps system their selves, and their armies are a type of corps. It works for them, and we will get to see how the new corps are assigned.
Three army corps have been officially created in the Ukrainian army. The first began functioning in mid-March on the basis of the Third Assault Brigade. Two more were created this month in the National Guard from the Charter Brigade and the 12th Azov Brigade. They are headed by Colonel Igor Obolensky (Kornet) and Colonel Denis Prokopenko (Redis).

Now these army corps will have their own headquarters, reconnaissance, artillery and logistics units. This, as explained by the commander of the National Guard Oleksandr Pivnenko, will increase their independence in carrying out combat missions without the need for constant involvement of the high command at such stages.

CORPS STRUCTURE OF THE ARMED FORCES OF UKRAINE
In general, an army corps is a permanent unit consisting of several brigades. A corps may include from two to five brigades, and the number of personnel varies from 10 to 50 thousand or more fighters, depending on the country, type of troops and tasks.

Army corps emerged with the emergence of mass armies, when the spatial scope of military operations increased and the management of military formations with numerous combat personnel and diverse weapons became more complex.

Their creation is also due to the need to have formations capable of solving combat missions in an independent operational direction.

It is currently common knowledge that the Armed Forces of Ukraine include: the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Army Corps, the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Airborne Assault Troops and the 30th Marine Corps of the Navy. However, the number of formed corps is growing, because currently the Armed Forces of Ukraine have more than one hundred brigades of various purposes.

Each corps consists of 4-5 mechanized (airborne assault, infantry) brigades, a reconnaissance regiment or battalion, and other separate combat and logistical units. The corps is commanded by a major general, chief and deputy chief of staff, and brigadier generals.

As for the newly created, Azov has now become the First Corps of the National Guard. It includes:

1st Presidential Operational Brigade Bureviy;
12th Special Purpose Brigade Azov;
14th Operational Brigade Chervona Kalina;
15th Operational Brigade Kara-Dag;
the newly created 20th Operational Brigade Lyubart.

It should be noted that the Third Assault Brigade became the Third Corps, and the Charter, accordingly, the Second. There are no other details regarding their composition.

AN UNPLEASANT LESSON
The Ukrainian army began actively switching to a corps-based command structure in February of this year.

"We are taking into account the challenges of the time and are working to strengthen the army even in the current difficult conditions. The reform of the organizational structure of the Armed Forces continues. We have begun implementing measures to transition to a corps structure," explained the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Sirsky.

It should be noted that the reform of the organizational structure of the Ukrainian army by merging the Ukrainian Armed Forces brigades into corps already took place in 2023 with the formation of the 9th and 10th army corps. However, after the Zaporizhzhya offensive operation, the brigades subordinated to the newly created corps continued to fight separately in various sections of the front as part of operational-tactical groups.

Probably, the new wave of creation of army corps is aimed at completing the formation of the organizational core with the gradual transfer of combat brigades under its control.
