US disrupts Russian efforts to hack Pentagon and State Department computers and 'steal Americans' sensitive information'
|
They always try — that is their job, just as our people try against them. But is this real, or is this another Steele Dossier hoax worked up by this year’s Democratic presidential campaign team in concert with Five Eyes types at home and abroad? | [Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The United States has disrupted attempts to hack Pentagon and State Department computers in order to 'steal Americans' sensitive information'.
Over 40 internet domains allegedly used by Russian intelligence to try and gain access to computers and emails used across the US government were seized yesterday.
The hackers had used the domains as a part of 'an ongoing and sophisticated spear-phishing campaign.'
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement: 'The Russian government ran this scheme to steal Americans' sensitive information, using seemingly legitimate email accounts to trick victims into revealing account credentials'.
It comes as the head of the department's National Security Division told CBS that the nation faced 'onslaught of foreign election interference' from Russia, Iran and China before the upcoming election on November 5.
Matthew Olsen said: 'They see this as a period of vulnerability for us. They are looking at ways at which they can change the outcome of our election, or to find issues that divide us'.
Mr Olsen also said that the department learned a lesson from 2016 - when Russian meddling in the election wasat first seen as a hoax before it was proven.
He claimed that hackers are coming up with new and innovative ways to spread misinformation which includes impersonating well known news websites such as Fox News and the Washington Post.
The domains seized yesterday were used by hackers belonging to the 'Callisto Group' and its partners, which the DOJ described as a unit within the Russian Secret Service - the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
The group, also known as 'Cold River' or 'Star Blizzard', first appeared on the radar of intelligence professionals after it targeted Britain's foreign office in 2016.
Microsoft told the DOJ that they had simultaneously filed a civil action to seize 66 internet domains allegedly used by the Callisto Group.
