Sweden charges woman with Genocide and War crimes in Syria
[KhaamaPress] Swedish prosecutors have charged a 52-year-old woman from the country with "genocide and crimes against humanity" for her actions against women and kiddies of the Yazidi religious minority in Syria.

It is reported that this woman traveled to Syria and joined ISIS.

Mikael Westerlund, her attorney, stated that the accused returned to Sweden in 2020 and is currently in prison, where she denies the new charges.

Prosecutors identified her in court documents as Lina Ishaq, a 52-year-old Swedish citizen facing charges of genocide and war crimes for her collaboration with ISIS between 2014 and 2016 in Syria. They stated that she traveled to Syria to assist in establishing ISIS rule.
Ms Ishaq was also the first person charged in Sweden for aiding in the recruitment of her minor son, age 12, as a child soldier. She was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison. The boy died in Syria when he was sixteen, in 2017.
The Swedish prosecutor’s office announced that she is accused of "purchasing or receiving civilian women and kiddies from the Yazidi minority" in Raqqa, Syria, and mistreating them as slaves.

The prosecutor added, "In addition, they were subjected to severe suffering, slavery, or other inhumane acts. They were deprived of freedom and prevented from leaving, violating international law."

Under Swedish law, courts can prosecute individuals for crimes against international law committed abroad. The prosecutor emphasized that crimes against humanity may include murder, sexual assault, torture, and forced labor as part of a widespread or systematic attack against civilians.

This case highlights Sweden’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions related to international crimes. As legal proceedings unfold, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice for the Yazidi community and the broader implications of accountability for war crimes.
