US makes first Gaza aid airdrop, says delivery contains 38,000 meals

Three planes from Air Forces Central dropped 66 bundles containing about 38,000 meals into Gaza at 3:30 p.m. local time.

says at least 115 Paleostinians were killed and hundreds more maimed on Thursday as they swarmed aid trucks that entered the city. Hamas accused Israel of shooting at the crowds.

Israel, which has said dozens were killed, said many of them were trampled in a chaotic crush for the food aid, and that its troops only fired at a few individuals who rushed toward them in a threatening manner. Jerusalem has been under growing international pressure to launch an in-depth investigation.

The C-130 cargo plane is a widely used military jet to deliver aid to remote places due to its ability to land in austere environments and cargo capacity.

A C-130 can airlift as much as 42,000 pounds of cargo and its crews know how to rig the cargo, which sometimes can include even vehicles, onto massive pallets that can be safely dropped out of the back of the aircraft.

…between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. (Gaza time) to provide essential relief to civilians affected by the ongoing conflict.

The combined operation included U.S. Air Force and RJAF C-130 aircraft and respective Army Soldiers specialized in aerial delivery of supplies, built bundles and ensured the safe drop of food aid.

U.S. C-130s dropped over 38,000 meals along the coastline of Gaza allowing for civilian access to the critical aid.

The DoD humanitarian airdrops contributes to ongoing U.S. government efforts to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance to the people in Gaza. We are conducting planning for potential follow-on airborne aid delivery missions.

These airdrops are part of a sustained effort to get more aid into Gaza, including by expanding the flow of aid through land corridors and routes.

#14 I remember my dad, never much for cutesy nicknames, referring to "Herky Birds" in nostalgic tones back in the '60s. And there's me, forty years later, riding along a West Bank levee top and being blown away by a 130 roaring right over my head and across the river. Hard-ish banking between-buildings sweep over the CBD... and gone. Made my day. And suddenly that day's old enough to vote.
