Baja California's attorney general unexpectedly resigns, citing "personal reasons"

Ricardo Iván Carpio was elected by Congress and began what was supposed to be a six-year term in January 2022

Baja California’s attorney general, Ricardo Iván Carpio, presented his resignation Thursday, citing personal reasons, officials said.

He will be replaced by Rafael Orozco, who has been serving as the office’s lead prosecutor and second in charge. Orozco will be in charge while the Baja California Congress carries out the process of appointing a new attorney general.

"The pursuit of justice is an important task, so the women and men who make up the State Attorney General Office will continue to do their best to guarantee justice and fight impunity," the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

The Attorney General’s Office not only prosecutes crimes but is also the lead investigative agency in the state.

Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila on Friday recognized Carpio’s tenure and said she would send a list of candidates to Congress to choose the next attorney general.

"Carpio’s work at the helm of the Baja California Attorney General’s Office has revitalized its institutional capacities while generating others that will allow for better investigations for the benefit of society, a legacy that will last for generations to come," she said in a statement.

Carpio’s resignation comes unexpectedly. A day earlier he held a press conference to talk about recent homicide cases in the state.

Carpio was elected by Congress in January 2022 for a six-year term.

The murders of Tijuana journalists Margarito Martínez and Lourdes Maldonado took place at the beginning of his term. In both cases, the men who carried out the killings have been sentenced, but not the individuals suspected of ordering the acts. .

The office under his leadership also identified a suspect in what Carpio has described as the serial killings of female sex workers in Tijuana. A Los Angeles County man was arrested and is awaiting extradition to Mexico to face charges in at least one of those killings.

#1 He wanted to save his cojones AND not end up hanging from a bridge or getting a new necktie.
Such a shame. Baja was fun.
