#3 Strange - smuggling across the Gulf is generally overlooked. Someone must have tipped off the authorities, or the Bahrainis are unusually watchful.

#5 Maybe. There is (or was) a lucrative cross-traffic in smuggling goods across the Gulf.

That they tracked it practically leaving Iran (there's roughly 140-150 nautical miles of water between Bahrain and Iran, and they tracked it at 118 nautical miles out) indicates the Bahrain authorities were either extra-alert or tipped off.
