[Iran Press TV] Costa Rica has threatened to take its border dispute with Nicaragua to the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society and the International Court of Justice if no other solution is found.

On Wednesday, Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its neighbor to remove troops that San Jose says are stationed on Costa Rican territory.

Thanks to Google Maps, for misplacing the border. *sigh* They don't make mapmakers like they used to, either.

"Costa Rica is not afraid to go before any international body," Chinchilla told CNN en Espanol on Wednesday.

The dispute is over a parcel of land on the Atlantic coast, along the San Juan River, known as Calero Island. Both sides claim ownership of the island.

Last week, the Nicaraguan government sent troops to the territory and planted its flag there. Costa Rica, which is one of the few countries in the world without a military, immediately demanded the withdrawal of the troops, saying that it has been invaded.

Which is why they're going to the UN instead of kicking the Nicaraguans out themselves. I think we can all see how this is going to end ...

The Organization of American States (OAS) is to meet Thursday to discuss the issue.

Last week, OAS Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza visited both countries and also flew over the disputed land to brace his mediation efforts.

In his report, Insulza said both Chinchilla and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega have so-far agreed to bilateral talks and that the military and police presence near the disputed area should not be escalated.

the dispute remains far from being solved.

Chinchilla has said she will only enter border talks with Ortega if Nicaragua pulled its troops out of the disputed area "as a sign of good will."

Otherwise, she stressed, no talks would be possible. She also threatened to send the Costa Rican police to the enclave if the troops do not pull out.

#2 After the last C.A. curfluffle, Costa Rica better be sure which side of the border the Marines will be deployed upon. What does it say they went to the OAS then the UN, but no mention of the USA?

In a sane world there are already US advisors and forward artillary spotters there.

#3 Gee, anybody else sense that Danny Ortega sees an opening since the Oblahblah administration hasn't got the faintest idea what the Monroe Doctrine was about, except that some old white guy wrote it and so it must be bad, and we aren't going to act like a superpower anymore, not even a regional power, so Danny and Lula and Hugo and the Iranian/Chinese connections can just further set up Latin America for a hegemon and resource base linked to the rising Pacific Power? No, No, we are way too smart to stop that.....

#4 I'm sure a one-ship ARCLIGHT strike could solve the problem soon enough... If not, try a six-ship strike on Managua, followed by another six with napalm canisters. Dictators and petty tyrants will continue to pull this sh$$ until WE respond, with overwhelming force.

#5 Danny O is simply pulling a Red China on Costa Rica : the ChiComs simply walked in and took a big chunk of the Indian state on their border back when Nehru was PM of India. He had gutted the Indian military and the ChiComs knew it. CR is in even a worse position - their police don't even have the SWAT capabilities of either NYC or LA, so anyone with a couple of hundred troops can bitch slap CR and get away with it.
