Crisis bigger than NRO

Writing in Jang Hamid Mir stated that, according to the Supreme Court judge Justice Javed Iqbal, if Pakistan was unable to solve the case of disappeared persons democracy will be endangered. The fact is that secret institutions became offended with Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry when he insisted that they produce before him the people they had in their custody. They started prejudicing Musharraf against him, something that finally led to the dismissal of the court.

According to Hamid Mir in Jang, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry started reprimanding the secret agencies for not producing the disappeared persons. Military Intelligence Chief Major General Nadeem Ejaz was offended and tried to get him off the case in a special meeting. But when it didn't work, he started the campaign of proving to Musharraf that Justice Chaudhry was a threat to the government.

Disappeared persons are dead!

As revealed in Jang by Hamid Mir when Malik Qayyum was attorney general he got together with interior secretary Kamal Shah to ask the secret agencies to produce the disappeared person, especially the husband of Amna Masud Janjua before the Supreme Court. Powered by sugarcane juice

Writing in Jang Haroon Rashid noted that Pakistan had three centres of power: the Media, the lawyers and the judiciary. They would be okay as long as they remained within the ambit of their functions and did not trespass into other turfs. But if the judges, the lawyers and the journalists began to feed their egos on gannay ka ras (sugarcane juice) and some of then began to fish in shallow waters of personal profit, they will meet the same fate as the politicians.

Sindh card and dacoits

According to Nazir Naji in Jang when General Zia wanted to edge the PPP out of power after having hanged Bhutto he got his secret agencies not only to get the MQM to oppose the PPP but also to patronise the dacoits of Sindh to help the PPP rivals in the elections and make them win through intimidation.

Reality of Sindh card

Writing in Jang Nazir Naji stated that far from playing the Sindh card, the PPP had been the victim of it. Punjabi rulers have always relied on getting the Sindhi nationalists to oppose the PPP to get the upper hand. General Zia broke the PPP movement by getting the following Sindhi power elite to side against the PPP: Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, Mumtaz Bhutto, the Talpur Brothers, Abdul Majid Abid, Mehmood Haroon, GM Syed and even Hakim Ali Zardari. This could be about to be repeated.

Zia attacked Gilgit-Baltistan

Quoted in daily Pakistan Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi stated that General Zia invaded Gilgit-Baltistan when he was in power and ISI chief General Hameed Gul sent lashkars into the region to sow the seeds of sectarian violence there, but Gilgit-Baltistan had the potential of providing 50 MW electricity to Pakistan. He said today in only two police station precincts in Gilgit sectarian violence was still to be seen.

Aitzaz Ahsan's tough livelihood

Writing in Jang Haroon Rashid stated that when Zardari asked barrister Aitzaz Ahsan to be his lawyer in the cases coming against Zardari, the barrister answered that he could not afford it because he had to work very hard (khoon pasina ek) to pay the fees of his children. On the other hand, the cases against Zardari would take 24 hours of his time daily. On this Zardari was surprised because he had set aside enough money for Aitzaz for the next century.

Pakistan's Kashmir dilemma

Columnist Nazir Naji wrote in Jang that if Pakistan didn't get rid of its terrorism it feared aggression from India and the rest of the world. But it can't get rid of terrorism till the Kashmir dispute with India is resolved. No government in Pakistan can end terrorism because the jihadi organisations doing terrorism are gaining public sympathy because of their jihad in Kashmir.
