#1 The Russian military, as with the Soviet military, and as with the Imperial Russian military always have regarded acts of war committed against the civilian population as acts that shame the uniform, and have always been treated as crimes, not perquisites.

How they are dealt with will depend on the tactical commander at the time of the commission of the crime, and could include non judicial punishment (Article 15, Captain's mast, etc), through the stripping of ranks and rewards, to exile, to imprisonment, to execution (drumheads).

The main difference is how news of the alleged crime is handled. Russians prefer to handle their judicial matters discretely. They prefer to let the detractors squawk as criminal matters are quietly closed and they move on to the business of victory.

#2 I dunno but, from what I've heard, Red Army soldiers had themselves quite a party when they finally got to Berlin. When Stalin told them "Berlin is yours", he meant it in more ways than one. I'd hate to have them doing the same in Ukraine. There's enough bad blood between those people as it is.

#4 Surprising when they emptied out prisons to feed the carnage on the front line? Given how much they waste in burning up Ukie ammo with cannon fodder, what would the line dog think that the 'authorities' would do to them that was worse?
