#8 Turkey chose the losing side in World War I, so they would have lost their empire even if it weren’t already crumbling around them. Had the allies not divided the Turkish rump state from the rest of the empire, Ataturk would never have been able to establish a modern republic, one which has lasted a century, though probably not much longer.
