#1 Reporting out of the Sudan is execrable. Fighting is occurring along two fronts, one south of Khartoum for control of the White Nile. The second is the action in and around the capital of Darfur, El Fasher. What is not at all clear is the role the The extensive ethnic Zaghawa is playing in this. The Zaghawa, a significant minority in Darfur, constitute a majority of officers in the Chadian army. They are the most intelligent, trusted, and the most battle tested. They are superior in general to the Arab cohort in Sudan's officer corps. Unfortunately, the Zaghawas in Chad and Sudan at present seem to be severely divided, The Zaghawa reportedly have an aversion to hereditary rule, and internal divisions along such lines remain to be played out.
The Arab sides in conflict in Darfur do not choose to attack the Zaghawa, or so it seems, but which side the Zaghawa Chad/Sudan leadership supports is not at all clear. Are they the wildcard? Reporting on inter and intra-ethnic conflict in Darfur would certainly be appreciated.
