#1 Gerasimov has been an incredibly effective field commander for setting the defensive strategy for Russian ground troops.

It sounds like Gerasimov was kicked back upstairs, and the new field commander, Colonel-General Mikhail Teplinskiy, is preparing for a new Russian offensive.

The stuffing (to use a Russian term) about the difficulty in plumbing Russian military thought is just that: Stuffing.
