#1 Frankly, this war in Ukraine has been a disaster for both Russia and the West. Russia's military has been exposed as a paper tiger. NATO internal weaknesses, likewise, have been exposed. American treasure has been expended for little purpose other than stalemate. And who benefits? Xi must be smiling. And the longer it lasts the weaker Russia and the West become.
If there is any real benefit to America it is the sure knowledge that much of future wars will be fought by robotics. That navies are questionable. That ground forces and their protectors, e.g., artillery and tanks, are sitting ducks. I wonder what West Point and Annapolis are teaching these days? The world is moving rapidly, shades of Spring 1939.

I'm reminded of an old episode of Star Trek in which Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock visit a planet where two civilizations are at war with each other. They fight by trading missiles. Neither side has any defense against the missiles so they both wait passively for their enemy to lob a missile at them and then they lob one of their missiles back. Armies have been rendered obsolete by the missiles so the missiles always hit civilian targets. They wring their hands. They accept the losses and accept that the war will continue forever.

#6 Oh well, I was a kid when I watched that episode and did not remember correctly. I think I got the main thrust of it though, that technology renders armies obsolete. Attacks are simulated by computers. But the war continues and the warring parties agree to accept their losses to the point of executing their own people when the computer simulates an attack.
