Had a friend tasked to eliminate a dangerous Black Bear in the NGA / WNC area back in the 90's used a Semi-Auto 12ga with 250+ grain deer slugs.

A 5.56mm using 55 grain rounds would not be a caliber of choice for a charging 400+ lbs Male Black Bear.

Applying that info to an Alaska Brown Bear, which generally are around 800lbs or Kodiak's which are near a VW Bug in weight.

A magazine worth of the defender and probably those of his mates would at least slow the beast down. Ripping up tendons and sinew of the limbs would have a tendency to do that.
