#3 I read long ago that Sharbat Gula's identity was matched with that of the Afghan girl photo through iris identification processes, now used worldwide on vast numbers of people due to unique characteristics of the human iris. The old National Geographic photo clearly showed the match with iris of the contemporary Sharbat Gula. Article states she is now a widow but still has children to support.

Sharbat Gula suffers from hepatitis C. She is also a widow and a mother of four children

Apparently the photo was taken in 1985.
