#8 I knew an oil speculator fella years ago. He raised money for drilling expenses by selling 10% interest certificates. Problem was, he'd sell 25 to 30 certificates for each well. The certificates were usually verbal (a tax avoidance technique). Dry holes were his specialty.

I'm honestly surprised that much actually made it to being spent on "assets". But I guess the seller of those "assets" were the intended recipients all along.
