#2 It’s useful to know where these people are coming from. And since Tolo News is an Afghan news site, they are first interested in the fates of fellow Afghans. And the article does note that route is primarily used by Afghans, Pakistanis, and Iranians.

#4 I understand it as a common traffic accident involving a group being moved along a well-travelled route by human traffickers and jihadis to Europe, Vespasian Ebboting9735.

I think the term of art is rat lines, though I wouldn’t guarantee it.
