#1 Life is a series of choices.

#2 I (wisely) kept my mouth shut when my sisters complained that their PhD's did not pay as much as some starting Engineering college graduates... Actions do have consequences and both of them were over-qualified for the jobs they chose. Biology PhD (From! John!! Hopkins!!!) and ended up working for the Florida EPA. The other was an Education doctorate (but her thesis was critical of the reigning icon of the day Dr. Piaget, so go figure) and she ended up teaching remedial math at a Junior College.

consistently strong...

#4 Was talking to a guy who has a Master's in History complaining he couldn't find a job. Owed over a hundred grand in student loan. He asked me what I did so I told him and also told him how much I made. I have a Bachelors "But I have a Masters" was his response. I said go back to school and get a degree, if you must have one, and do something worthwhile.

#5 Supply and demand strike again.

Perhaps just one or two courses in Economics would be a good idea before you get a Master's degree. The more of these degrees there are, the less they are worth. Again, supply and demand.

#6 It's a full-on swindle and the people caught up in it will keep voting for the people and policies that entrapped them.

#7 Supply and Demand. About 30-ish years ago my sister (Edu.PhD) told me that "(1) There were two applicants for every good Academic job and (2) when there was an 'open selection process' the winner was whomever the Good Ole Girls(Boys)™ had picked before hand ..."

With the Baby Boomers holding a death grip on their tenured positions -and- the implosion of the student age population the "demand side" looks really bleak.
