#1 My brother-in-law fought in the Korean War (often referred to as the Forgotten War). He was with the USMC.

#2 It was a major disruption to my young life. Family went from living in the superintendents quarters at a beautiful state park to living next door to Fort Useless for a year. Dad was called up to assist in shipping army personnel out to Asia. I've been prejudiced against Commies ever since then.

#3 If you want to learn more try The Forgotten War. Nearly everything this administration is doing now with the services was done leading up to our involvement there. The 'occupation force' in Japan was not permitted to train (like most of the rest of the army) and subject to indoctrination - at least anti-commie as opposed to pro-commie today. The army deployed from the states was also untrained and only attrited the North Korean force around Pusan before rushing to the Chinese border. That lack of training and unit cohesion was amply demonstrated by the half a million Chinese, coming off a civil war, who descended upon them. Training and cohesion wouldn't be restored in theater till Ridgeway took over. Even in that, remember it was the South Korean army that did most of the fighting and dying.

#4 This Kind of War, Fehrenbach, also highlights the military losing discipline, moral, and generally turning to crap.

On Desperate Ground, Sides, gets into some good detail on the Northern Campaign....if you can take or skip the constant McCarther bashing.

Incredible narrative.

#6 Sadly most people recollection of the Korean War comes from the M.A.S.H. TV series.

Sad.
