#2 The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has about 30,000 members. Featherbedding is rampant. Incredibly, the union, long a Marxist stronghold, negotiated a agreement in 1960 that permitted the extensive mechanization of the docks, including the first ship containerization employed by Matson Lines. Reportedly, the union was bought off by a sweetheart deal that gave it one dollar for ever container loaded. Modernization of ports and reduction of stevedores followed.
