#20 #16 I'm not sure I agree, P2k. As I see it - there was an immense pressure on African Americans to excel educationally (that being modern criteria for intelligence/intellectualism).
Lets consider an example: George Floyd went to college, couldn't hack it, and started his downward slide. Suppose, instead, he'd went to a vocational-technical school?

Now (before I'm accused of racism) lets turn it around. Suppose the same (guilt-tripping) white majority decided that all Jews should be professional athletes, and exerted a pressure (similar to one applied to blacks) toward this end?

The community is 55% white, 25% Black, and 7% Hispanic, according to Wikipedia:

Columbia began with the idea that a city could enhance its residents' quality of life. Creator and developer James W. Rouse saw the new community in terms of human values, rather than merely economics and engineering. Opened in 1967, Columbia was intended to not only eliminate the inconveniences of then-current subdivision design, but also eliminate racial, religious and class segregation.[6] Columbia has consistently ranked in the top 10 of CNN Money's Best Places to Live in the United States.[7] In 2020, Columbia was ranked as the 5th best place to live in the U.S.[8]

Almost half Black, almost half of the students getting free meals... but all the bells and whistles. Upper middle class tax payer base with a chunk of black and Hispanic kids from the ghetto bussed in because the planned apartment housing did not provide enough poor people. Ms Bree grew up in the neighbourhood, not the apartments or bussed in — she definitely has the look. Those pearly whites did not straighten themselves.

The pressure for college vs vo-tech has the same result for most students who come from poor backgrounds, g(r)omgoru. It isn’t a race thing, though there are those who like to pretend it is, but about economic class and preparation. Because of WWII, my mother had to do three years of high school classes in six months — so of course her math and science classes got short shrift, making it impossible for her to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a chemist like Marie Curie despite having originally been a child of educated professionals.

Check the stats for out of wedlock births and crime in the community in say 1960 and now today. What happened since then? Those running government certainly didn't push any of this. In practice, just the opposite in many cases.
