Exactly.

I don't care if it's a deterrent or not, and I think it actually does have at least some of that effect, anyway.

#7 The state executes murderers so that families don't get into cycles of retribution. Adding others -- the jury, judge, police, etc. -- removes it from being a private vendetta to being a collective action. Adding the trial and appeals and the other ceremonies removes the passion.

#9 I'm pretty sure I can scientifically prove that the penalty exists. What else can science determine about this? It's about morality, not science.
